Notwithstanding the extent of such injuries, it can be a very traumatic experience for anyone. Spinal injuries are usually a result of damage to the vertebrae, ligaments or disks of the spinal column or to the spinal cord itself. Such life-impairing injuries may often be sudden. A traumatic blow to the spinal cord — most important structure between the body and the brain — can fracture, dis- locate, crush, or compress one or more of the vertebrae. A steep fall, car crash, gun- shot or knife wound that penetrates the spinal cord can damage it. Extensive bleeding, swelling, inflammation and fluid accumulation around the spine can also lead to its damage. Non-traumatic spinal cord injuries may be caused by arthritis or disk degeneration. There are several key causes of spinal cord injuries. Often a broken neck might result in the damage of bones that sur- round the spinal cord. Known as traumatic injury, it may be caused by traffic acci- dents, domestic and work-related acci- dents, sports injuries and lethal assaults. Non-traumatic spinal cord injury, on the other hand, is caused by infection of the spinal nerve cells (bacterial and viral), tu- mours that press on the spinal cord, inter- ruption of the blood supply to the spine (causing cord damage) and congenital medical conditions (present since birth). It is advisable to minismise risk in case of traumatic spinal injuries. Experts have lined out some risk-reducing measures including wearing a seatbelt while in car; wearing protective gear while playing sports; and diving only when you are sure that the water body is free of sharp objects or rocks. These preventions can go a long way in avoiding spinal injuries. With the improvement in medical care, people who unfortunately suffer from such injuries can still lead full lives. However a vast majority of such patients might need assistive devices such as walkers or wheel- chairs to deal with loss of mobility, and some may even be paralysed for a lifetime as a result of a severe spinal injury. Intense rehabilitation treatment has proven effective in some forms of spinal injury. Intravenous methylprednisolone (a steroid) can be an effective treatment since it may reduce damage to nerve cells and decrease inflammation but it is not a complete cure for a spinal cord injury. Doctors may advise rigid neck collar or a special bed to help the patient. Surgery, which removes bone fragments, foreign objects, herniated disks or fractured ver- tebrae (which compress the spine), can be effective in some cases. Spinal injuries can be debilitating. The degree of such injuries may vary — from some amount of sensation and feeling below the point of injury to a complete loss

of function. Notwithstanding the extent of such injuries, it can be a very traumatic experience for anyone. Spinal injuries are usually a result of damage to the vertebrae, ligaments or disks of the spinal column or to the spinal cord itself.

Such life-impairing injuries may often be sudden. A traumatic blow to the spinal cord — most important structure between the body and the brain — can fracture, dis-locate, crush, or compress one or more of the vertebrae. A steep fall, car crash, gun-shot or knife wound that penetrates the spinal cord can damage it. Extensive bleeding, swelling, inflammation and fluid accumulation around the spine can also lead to its damage. Non-traumatic spinal cord injuries may be caused by arthritis or disk degeneration.

There are several key causes of spinal cord injuries. Often a broken neck might result in the damage of bones that sur-round the spinal cord. Known as traumatic injury, it may be caused by traffic acci-dents, domestic and work-related acci-dents, sports injuries and lethal assaults. Non-traumatic spinal cord injury, on the other hand, is caused by infection of the spinal nerve cells (bacterial and viral), tu-mours that press on the spinal cord, inter-ruption of the blood supply to the spine

(causing cord damage) and congenital medical conditions (present since birth).

With the improvement in medical care,

people who unfortunately suffer from such injuries can still lead full lives. However a vast majority of such patients might need assistive devices such as walkers or wheel-chairs to deal with loss of mobility, and some may even be paralysed for a lifetime as a result of a severe spinal injury.

Surgery, which removes bone fragments, foreign objects, herniated disks or fractured ver-tebrae (which compress the spine), can be effective in some cases.

The UAE has a number of clinics and hospitals equipped to provide treatment in such cases. With specially trained emergency nurse practitioners available round-the-clock in several spinal injury centres, there are state-of-the-art resus-citation rooms for critical emergency management.
