Benson, 53, died Saturctay, August 14, 1999, at St. Mary's of the Plains Hospital In Lubbock.

He was bom Jan. 18, 1946,1n Merkel where he attended school, He received a bachelor of science degree In agricultural education from Texas A&M University In 1968, where he receive honors as a Distinguished Stuclem and a Distinguished Miliary Student. He also had dOne graduate work at the universitY. ·

Benaon married Jannle Lou Walker on Dec. 2, 1966,1n College Station.

He was a 28-year veteran with the Texas AgricUltural Extension Service, first serving as · an assistant agent in Wichita County following graduation. After 10 mOnths there, he was callect to actlved!Jtywlththe u.s. Army. His threeyearsotmllllarydutylncl.lded 13 months In Korea. He was

discharged as a captain. In February 1972, he was named

as assistant county agent In Hale County rtmlllnlng here. until September 1973whenhebecame county agent In Mitchell County. He remained there until Dec. 1984 when he was named Hate County agent.

Benson had served as superintendent of the Hate County Stock Show and South Plains Fair In Lubbock as well as chairman ol the Panhandle Parade of Breeds In Plainview.

He received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of County Agrleultural Agent In 1988 and the Texas Su~rior Service Award from the Texas Agricultural Extension Service In 1994.

He was a member of Ninth and Columbia Church of Christ.

Survivors InClude In wife; two sons, Kyle of Kernersville, N.C. and Bryan of Plainview; a daughter, Sheila Lewis of Tyler; his mother, Helen Benson of Merkel; a sister, Ann Scott of Merkel; . and a granddaughter.
