DEPUTY PRINCIPAL FAREWELLIt is almost 12 years since I was appointed to Centenary SHS,as an Acting Deputy Principal, in April 2007. Since then I haveworked with thousands of students and seen 12 cohorts ofstudents graduate from our school. It is now time for me toleave my teaching career, a career that has all of us give muchto others, but as teachers know, we have the great pleasureof working with young people, and their families, to help shapetheir futures.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time and my work here atCentenary – it is a great school within a great community.

The Deputy Principal role has so many aspects that I havenever had a dull day! From timetabling, to work with teachers,to investigating behaviour, to attending P&C meetings, schoolcamps and Arts performances, to chats with parents abouttheir concerns and to students who are upset, it has all beenvery engaging – and sometimes needed the wisdom ofSolomon!

Together with other staff members we successfully broughtbrand new Year 7s to high school four years ago with the FlyingStart initiative, and already this group are our Year 10s goinginto Year 11 and the new Senior Education phase. Time movesfast in schools.

Thanks to you all for your assistance, your support, the manylaughs and many kindnesses over these years. I wish you allwell.

INTERNATIONALOn Thursday, 29th November, Centenary SHS InternationalStudents became the first school in Qld to participate in theEQI swimming proficiency. 25 students worked with Qld SurfLifesaving who assessed their ability to float, thread water andswim short distances. The students were willing participants, keen to help one another and shout encouragement. Thebenefits of this program were not just limited to us assessingthe swimming proficiency of our students in relation to wateractivities but I believe it also provided valuable feedback to ourstudents who may now reconsider their perceived swimmingability, and may approach water activities in a moreconservative and responsible manner.

FACULTIES

APPLIED TECHNOLOGY

Senior Programmes

In preparation for next year’s introduction of the SeniorAssessment and Tertiary Entrance Systems (SATE), teachershave been developing work programmes from selectedsyllabus documents. “Food and Nutrition” and “Design” are twonew subjects to emerge from the revision of senior syllabi as aconsequence of the introduction of SATE.

Teachers have designed the first two pieces of assessment forthe respective courses and will participate in an endorsementprocess, late this year, to ensure that the assessmentinstruments satisfy Queensland Curriculum and AssessmentAuthority (QCAA) requirements.

The new subjects are exciting and will present challenges toboth teachers and students.

The new senior assessment system will start with studentsentering Year 11 in 2019.

The first students to receive an ATAR instead of an OP willgraduate from Year 12 in 2020.

Safety Requirements

Practical subjects, regardless of whether they operate in akitchen or workshop, require students to satisfy basic safetyexpectations. Leather shoes are mandatory, yet despite this, there has been in increasing number of students who arereluctant to wear the correct footwear. Safety is paramount, therefore non-compliancy will result in the student beingassigned to an adjoining room to complete theory units. Shouldthe non-compliant practice continue, the student’s continuationin the course will be the subject matter for discussion betweenthe parent and the school. Students who enrol in a practicalclass need to understand that safety is non-negotiable andattempts to ignore requirements will incur consequences.

I’m willing to discuss the issue with parents but reiterate, safetyis paramount.

Australian Curriculum

The immergence of the Australian curriculum has presentedjunior students with a Design and Technologies syllabus. Asthe title implies, students are required to “design products or

1. Collect a nomination form from Mrs Nasalio inStaffroom 4

3. Return it to Mrs Nasalio by 3pm Wednesday 30thJanuary, 2019 to Staffroom 4.

services to meet present or future needs”. This year, TheApplied Technology staff have been writing junior workprogrammes to satisfy Australian curriculum requirements.Teachers are using this opportunity to review and changeaspects of the junior course, however it has been our intensionto maintain the practical focus of our subjects. We remainresolute in our belief that students learn best by doing.

Reports

Reports will be arriving soon. Please spend some timereviewing the results. If there is room for improvement, it isimportant to establish what has inhibited a greater degree ofsuccess and then decide what changes need to occur. The“subject” tends to be an easy excuse and often incorrect causeof the problem. I ask that the student’s commitment to thecourse requirements be considered, in addition to their generalroutine regarding time assigned to homework, assignmenttasks, part-time work and social interests.

Congratulations to those students who are satisfied with theirresults and I look forward to an improvement from those whoacknowledge that they are capable of producing betteroutcomes.

Enjoy a restful and safe summer vacation and I trust youexperience memorable times with family and friends.

On the downside, we still struggle to attract new membersand the response from the new Year 7 parents has been quitedisappointing.

Jenelle Green recently took the decision to resign from theuniform shop and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank herfor her years of service.

I’d also like to thank the rest of the executive andsub-committee members for their hard work and dedicationthroughout the year and to wish all a very Merry Christmas anda safe return in the New Year.
