1 Introduction

The devices of the CENTAURI series are audio gateways; in other words they are audio codecswith extensive network ability (Internet, Intranet, LAN, WAN). They support all common codingprocedures and transmission protocols. The 2000 and 3000 models (see Figures 1 and 2) can only be remote controlled.

Figure 1: CENTAURI 2000

Figure 2: CENTAURI 3000The 2001 and 3001 models (see Figures 3 and 4) also have an LC Display and a keyboard forcontrolling manually.

Event-dependent ControlCENTAURI Gateways can be programmed such that they react to particular, pre-determinedevents in a set way. Events can thus be linked with actions.

The event-dependent control is described in the Centauri Communication Reference Manualand several Application Notes. Please take note of our notifications (also in the Internet underhttp://www.mayah.com).

1.1. First Steps / Quick StartThe CENTAURI 2001 and 3001 Audio Gateways have a display and a keyboard on the front ofthe device. You can therefore set up a connection to another communication partner immediatelyas soon as you have unpacked such a device and connected it up to the mains and ISDN.

The information shown on the displays of the CENTAURI 2001 and 3001 Audio Gateways canappear in different languages (can be pre-set, see section "Set Display Language" on page23). On delivery the devices are set to the English language. This is why all the correspondingillustrations in this handbook show the English language display.

To set up an immediate connection, proceed as follows:• Switch on the device. The switch is to be found on the rear of the device (see Figure 14 and

Figure 15 on page 20). After a short time the CENTAURI start mask appears on the Display:

Figure 6: The CENTAURI Start Mask

• Select CONNECT with the arrow key and press *).The Connect Dialog will now appear on thedisplay:

Figure 7: Connect Dialog MaskThere are already entries with test numbers entered in the phone book when the device leavesthe works.

• If you want to try out one of the available test numbers, select PHONEBOOK and press *). Alist will then appear showing all the entries set at the works.

• Select one of the phone book entries with the and *) keys and press *). The devicethen immediately begins to create a connection to the selected number.

You can also enter an ISDN phone number manually and then set up a connection to the samenumber. This can be any ISDN phone number.• To set up an immediate connection to a new subscriber, select DIRECT DIAL and press

*). Only one input request for the new ISDN phone number appears on the display.

• Press *), use the number keys to enter the number for DEST.1 and the press *). again. • If required set DEST. 2 and enter the second number in the same manner.

*) See table on page 12 for devices through manufacturing year 2001.

• Select CONNECT!. The device now immediately starts to set up a connection to the numbersentered.

In both cases you can follow the establishment of the connection on the display or in the programwindow:

Figure 8: Establishing a connectionIf the establishment of the connection is successful, the device automatically synchronizes itselfwith the partner at the other end of the line. If speakers are connected to the device, you too canhear the audio signal from the other end. The LC Display also jumps to the Status Dialog (seeFigure 69 on page 63) and displays the level of the in and out signal. If the establishment of the connection has been successful, the device switches back to the maskthat was displayed beforehand (see page 63).If the connection cannot be established, please check the following:– Does the ISDN setting correspond to the existing ISDN (see section ”Configure ISDN-

Adapter” on page 41)?– Is the device connected to an extension number meaning that it is necessary to dial a number

(e.g. zero) to get an outside line before a connection can be made (see section ”ConfigureISDN-Adapter” on page 41)?

If an arrow pointing up and/or down **) appears in a display, there are then other lines above orbelow the lines shown that you can shift up or down using and *) and then bring onto thedisplay.

*) S See table on page 12 for devices through manufacturing year 2001.

**) The arrows are aligned in accordance with device keypad function assignments through manufacturing year 2001for CENTAURI software prior to version 2.0.0.0.

1.3. Remote Control using Software All CENTAURI versions can be remote-controlled using a PC with the Windows 95/ 98/ME/NT/2000 operating systems. For this purpose special PC remote control software is included inthe scope of delivery.

Figure 12: The main window of the CENTAURI remote control softwareThere must be a connection between PC and CENTAURI – either via a serial RS232- interface orvia Internet Protocol (IP).

1.3.1. Remote Control via RS232 InterfaceThe following are required for remote-controlling the CENTAURI via a serial RS232 interface:

– PC with RS232 interface– 9-pole zero modem cable (included in scope of delivery)

The CENTAURI RS232 interface uses the following parameters:– Baud rate: 9600, 19200, 38400 (delivery condition) 57600, 115200– Data bits: 8– Stop bits: 1– Parity: none– Protocol: none

At the first Start the remote control software scans by default serial port 1 automatically(works settings). If the CENTAURI is controlled by one of the serial interfaces 2 to 8,the number of the ports to be scanned must be increased in the remote control menuitem EXPERT OPTIONS correspondingly.

1.3.2. Remote Control via IPThe CENTAURI versions 3000 and 3001 can also be remote-controlled via the network interfacecard via Internet Protocol. For this it must simply be started on any PC within the network and thenetwork address or the name of the CENTAURI must be entered. The remote control softwarethen creates a Windows socket connection to the CENTAURI via Internet Protocol. The following is needed for remote-controlling the CENTAURI via IP:

– PC with 10 Mbit/s or 100 Mbit/s Ethernet– IP protocol installed– IP network and normal RJ45 network cable

For controlling via IP, the CENTAURI must be given a free IP address that corresponds to thesub-network mask of your network. Where larger networks are concerned the user should in allevents contact the network administrator.

Example for assigning an IP Address:A CENTAURI should be operated on a network where the following applies:– The IP Addresses 192.168.1.0 to 192.168.1.100 have already been assigned– The sub-network mask is 255.255.255.0– The CENTAURI Gateway should contain IP Address 192. 168.1.101

Page 16: Centauri 200x/300x User Manual - MAYAH · Centauri 200x/300x, user manual as of software version 2.0.0.0 ... (Internet, Intranet, LAN, WAN). ... The block diagram shows how the CENTAURI

Steps for the CENTAURI 2000/3000First of all the IP Address must be entered using the remote control software (RS232):• Select EXPERT DIRECT COMMAND in the remote control software.• Enter the command 'ip_address 192.168.1.101' and confirm with OK.• Close the remote control software.• Boot the CENTAURI anew (switch off and then on again)

Steps for the CENTAURI 2001/3001

• Set SETUP NETWORK ADDRESS on the front of the device and then enter '192.168.1.101'.• Boot the CENTAURI anew (switch off and then on again)

Enter CENTAURI for Controlling via IP

• In order to enter a CENTAURI in the remote control software, select SETTINGS REMOTESETTINGS (manual). The following dialog window opens:

Figure 13: Setting the CENTAURI remote control via IP or RS232

• Click on ”IP” and enter the IP Address of the CENTAURI that is to be controlled with thesoftware under ”Add New CENTAURI”.

Port 2000 has nothing to do with Port 2001 that has been entered in the CENTAURI under”Network”! Changing one of these two or both values results in communication problems!

• So that the entries are effective, click on ”OK”.

Difference between 'Now' and 'Next Start':- In the case of 'Now' the connection to the given IP Address is activated immediate- In the case of 'Next Start' the connection to the given IP Address is first valid the next timethe remote control software is started.Advantage:If the current stage of the remote control software is not closed and the remote controlsoftware started again with a new IP Address, several CENTAURIs can be controlledsimultaneously.

4 Phonebook You can enter the numbers of partners you often call in a phone book. These entries can beactivated by simply pressing a key. Every entry in a phone book is administered by name and contains the respective communicationprofile. The entries appear sorted alphabetically by name.

They can be shifted up and down on the LC display with the and the *) keys. An entry is

always shown inverted. This is selected as soon as you press the *) key. So that you don’t haveto endlessly scroll up and down in a long list, you can hop to the beginning of the entries bypressing a number or letter key direct with this symbol. Beyond this, you can skip to the top of thelist by pressing “1”, or to the bottom by pressing “9”.

Figure 22: Subscriber list in the phone book; representation on the LC display In the windows of the remote control software on the Windows PC there are the usual scrollingbars for navigating. An entry is selected by mouse-click.You can copy a CENTAURI’s phone book on to a connected PC and save it there. On the otherhand you can also transfer such a telephone file back onto a CENTAURI where you can use theentries. You therefore have the possibility of distributing one phone book on to as manyCENTAURIS as you want.

4.1. Saving Phonebook on a PC

• To save a CENTAURI’s phone book on a PC, select FILE SAVE PHONE BOOK in the mainwindow of the remote control software. A dialog window with the file list then opens.

When the desired symbol hasbeen reached, wait a moment: the cursor jumps to the next position automatically aftertwo seconds. If the entry is longer than the number of characters that fit in the input line, the line isshifted so that the cursor position can always be seen.

– For ENCPROFILE and DECPROFILE you can enter a communication profile.– The transfer medium is entered with INTERFACE. This can be Loop, X.21 or ISDN,

and in the case of CENTAURI 3000/3001 also NET. – DESTination determines the destination address and in the event of an ISDN con-

nection the number of the ISDN connection. In the case of network connections this iswhere one enters an IP Address. In the case of multiple channel ISDN connections there are respectively more des-tination fields in which one must enter the numbers of the ISDN phones.

• End the entry process by pressing the *) key and confirm the query “Save new entry” with*).

The entry has now been saved to the phone book.

If you started the entry procedure with the key, you assigned a number yourself rightfrom the start which can be used as an abbreviated dialling number (see section "abbreviated" on page 61). In all other cases, a consecutive number is assigned when the entry is saved.

Configuration

Centauri user manual revision level 02/2003 33

5 Configuration

5.1. Individual ParametersIf you use the built in phone book function for dialling a communication partner (selecting analready entered communication partner), you do not have to set individual parameters since eachphone book entry already contains all the necessary data regarding the individual parameters. If however you dial a communication partner without using the phone book function, i.e. ”direct byhand”, it might also be necessary to set individual connection parameters manually.

5.1.1. Set Encoder You can set the encoder to 2 operational modes:– Dependency: ”remote”; With this, the encoder is set according to the parameter that it

receives from the distant decoder when the connection is made;

For all Mayah products (CENTAURI, SendIt) in “Automatic Mode” (Dependency: Remote,Format: Automatic) it is fundamentally valid that the calling device gives the settings forencoder and decoder. If a connection is made to a device from another manufacturer, the data flow coming fromthis device is used to determine with which setting this encoder works. This setting is thenused for the decoder and also the CENTAURI’s encoder. This guarantees that a bi-directional audio connection also comes into being for thesedevices in most cases, without making additional settings.

– Dependency: ”local”; With this the encoder uses the locally set parameters in all cases, regardless of which device is on the other end of the transmission path or what the con-stitution of the received data flow is.

This setting should only be chosen if the receiving device can also recognize the oppositeend automatically, which is however incompatible with the CENTAURIs.The “local” dependency setting for the decoder results in the fact that no adjustment ismade to the incoming data flow. If the setting does not suit the data flow, either no, orfaulty, audio is decoded.Via Format it is also possible to set “CDQ/H.221” (CCS), “MUSICTAXI”, “Micda” (if re-leased), “Aptx” (if released) and “J.52” as well as “Automatic”.The setting “CDQ/H.221” switches the CENTAURI into a mode for transmitting MPEGLayer 2 data flows over more than two ISDN B channels to a CCS-CDQPrima.

CENTAURI default setting. TheCENTAURI always performs inaccordance with the remotedevice with this setting. Thereare a few exceptions to this rulewhich are explained below.

Dependency = RemoteFormat = CDQ/H.221Bit rate =384 kbit/s stereo192 kbit/s mono

CDQPrimawithproprietaryH.221

When a CDQPrima calls aCENTAURI, automatic remotedevice recognition is functional(format = auto). If, on the otherhand, a CENTAURI calls aCDQPrima, the channelconnections are established tooquickly. The “Format =CDQ/H.221” setting assures thatchannel connections areestablished one after the other.

Dependency = LocalFormat depends uponremote device

Dependency = LocalFormat depends uponremote device

Format = J.52 Dependency = LocalContains other desiredparameters

J.52, but with fixed responsevalues:J.52 normally negotiates thehighest possible standardseparately for each direction. For example, a device alsoaccepts MPEG L3 at the re-ceiver side (if technically fea-sible), even if it uses MPEG L2at the transmitter side. However, if the settings“Format = J.52” and“Dependency = Local” havebeen selected, the CENTAURIalleges that it only understandsthe decoder settings.

Dependency = LocalFormat = J.52Type = G.722

G.722 stat. framing:G.722 stat. framing cannot berecognized automatically, because no in-band signalingoccurs. The CENTAURInormally uses the G.722 stat.framing timeout to this end(recommended: 25 sec.). Astatistical audio signal must bepresent for signal recognition(not a sinusoidal tone!).

Dependency = LocalBit rate = path cycle rate

5.1.3. Set Inverse Multiplexer („Format“)If a data stream is greater than the capacity of a transmission channel, it is then necessary to usetwo or even more ISDN B channels to ensure delay-free transmission. The transmitter musttherefore split the data over the individual B channels and the receiver must put them backtogether again properly after the transmission. In the context of MPEG coded audio signals thisprocedure is often called inverse multiplexing (IMUX). There are several different procedures for inverse multiplexing. The CENTAURI Gatewayssupport the international standard J.52 and the proprietary procedures of various manufacturers. If you know exactly which device is on the receiving end, you can pre-set this device at themultiplexer. The CENTAURI Gateways are however able to recognize the opposite stationautomatically and set themselves accordingly. To set the multiplexer, proceed as follows:(a) Via the front panel• Select the SETUP option in the Start mask (see Figure 6 on page 10). 5.1.16. Adjust Clipping LevelYou can change the input and output level on the CENTAURI to adjust it to the required level ofthe connected device. The CENTAURIs are fitted with an analog 18 dBu in/output level, in other words, an analog signalwith a level of 18 dBu uses up the digital resolution completely, higher levels lead to overdrive.Adjusting the input level means that the digital full level control is not first reached with a value of18 dBu but already with a newly set value. This makes the input more sensitive.Adjusting the output level has the effect that a digital signal with full level control does notgenerate 18 dBu but just a signal with the set value. To adjust the clipping level, proceed as follows:(a) Via the front panel:

– Select the SETUP option in the Start mask (see Figure 6 on page 10). The Setup maskappears.

• Select ANALOG LEVELS and press *). The ANALOG LEVELS mask appears. In this theparameter “In-Out” are already marked.

5.2. Communication ProfilesA communication profile contains several settings for the encoder/decoder, like sample rate, bitrate etc., that are, besides the destination address, necessary for establishing a connection. These settings are described in more detail in section "Individual Parameters" on page 33. Thecomplete encoder/decoder settings can be stored in the profile list under any name you wish.Communication profiles are of importance in establishing a connection to a communicationpartner. This is why every entry in the phone book is linked with a communication profile. Severalphone book entries can be linked with the same communication profile. No phone book entry canbe created without stating the communication profile. When creating phone book entries, communication profiles are selected and used via a cor-responding drop-down list (see section "Create Entry" on page 28 ff.).'The communication profiles are stored along with the phone book entries (see section "SavingPhonebook on a PC " on page 27). You can also transfer the communication profiles back to aCENTAURI and use the entries there (see section "Transfer phone book to CENTAURI " on page27). Once you have created a communication profile file you can distribute the samecommunication profile file to as many CENTAURIs as you wish.

5.2.1. Compile and Save Communication ProfilesTo compile and save a communication profile, proceed as follows:(a) Via the front panel:• Select the SETUP option in the Start mask (see Figure 6 on page 10). The Setup mask

CENTAURI Gateways can set up connections to other communication partners on their own. They can also accept incoming calls automatically.

6.1. Automatic Acceptance of CallsCENTAURI Gateways accept incoming calls automatically and synchronize themselves with thestation calling corresponding to the configuration. When a call comes in, the “Connection Setup” mask appears in the display for a short time. Whenthe connection is made the connection data with respect to the opposite end is displayed in thismask as a protocol.

Figure 63: The CONNECTION SETUP mask

If you are just making settings or entries, you can end the display of this mask with *). The maskwill however disappear again on its own after a few seconds. Exactly the same display conditionis then regenerated as it was prior to the Connect Report. An editing procedure in progress willnot be discontinued if a connection is set up from outside.

Prepare Connection/Transfer

6.2. Prepare Connection/Transfer

6.2.1. Mix Input Signals and Adjust Level Before you set up the connection to your communication partner, we recommend that you setthe signals to be transmitted suitably.

6.2.2. Select the correct bit rateCENTAURI Gateways support the procedures G.711, G.722, Layer 2, Layer 3, AAC, MPEG 4AAC Low Delay and ADPCM 4SB (see table below), which behave very differently as far asquality and the required bit rate is concerned. Particularly in the case of coding standards basedon a psycho-acoustic procedure such as L2, L3 and AAC, there is no longer the directrelationship between audio bandwidth = sampling rate / 2. Rather more, when using MPEGstandards it is necessary to find the best compromise for the audio bandwidth for each com-bination of a bit rate with an sampling rate and a mode. This particular applies with respect to thevery low data rates, since the maximum bandwidth can always be used for high data rates. Furthermore, the sampling rate with which the encoder algorithm works does not automaticallycorrespond to the sampling rate with which the digital AES/EBU input has to work. In order toadapt the CENTAURI to e.g. a 96 kHz studio environment in this case, the devices havesampling rate converters. It is thus possible to set the sampling rate of the encoder to theoptimum value for the transmission procedure and bit rate independent of the environment. How the sampling rate and the bandwidth of a monophonic signal at a bit rate of 64 kBit/s relateto each other, for example in the case of Layer 2, is shown in the following table:

Sampling rate (kHz) 16 24 32 48

Bandwidth (kHz) with Layer 2 7.5 10.25 9.0 8.25

You can see that the best sound quality with Layer 2 is achieved with a sampling rate of 24 kHz.At a higher sampling rate, the available bandwidth is reduced even more. If a specification statesa bandwidth of 20 kHz at a data rate of 64 kBit/ s and a sampling rate of 48 kHz, the bestpossible sound quality is not to be expected. If you want to find out more about these relationships, we recommend you study the appropriateliterature on the subject. The following sampling rates are recommended as a matter of principle:

7 Internet Protocol So that this handbook is not more extensive than absolutely necessary, we assume basicknowledge about the Internet Protocol (IP). If you are not familiar with the topic “InternetProtocol”, we recommend you refer to the appropriate literature on the subject.

Every CENTAURI Audio Gateway has a network interface card with a 10Base-T/100Base- TX-RJ-45 connection. The connection configures itself to the existing network speed (10 or 100MBit/sec).The CENTAURI gateways support the Internet Protocol, either connection-orientated (TCP) orwithout connection (UDP) as a protocol on the network.

You can find more detailed descriptions of the various protocols in the “Glossary” on page 83.

All device types from the CENTAURI family can be remote controlled via the network interface. The devices of the CENTAURI 3000 series also permit the transport of digital audio signals viathe network interface. Each CENTAURI gateway can be connected to a normal local Ethernet via the network interface.Apart from the physical connection it is only necessary to enter the unique IP address.

7.1. Remote Control via IPFor management and control functions the CENTAURI gateways provide two different protocols:– In the simplest case a TCP/IP connection is set up with a PC on which the remote control

software provided runs. The data exchange is achieved via a simple IP Port Protocol. Thisprotocol can also be used for the development of more complex control systems.

– For the integration into network structures, CENTAURI gateways can be connected by meansof a management interface via the SNMP(v1) (Simple Network Management Protocol). Forthis the gateway acts as 'Agent', i.e. a manageable device in the network. Information aboutthe current status of the device and the individual interfaces can be requested via SNMP. Thegateway can also trigger a network report (Trap) when a particular, predefined event occursthat can be received and evaluated by the management system.

7.2. Digital Audio via IPBesides the monitoring and management functions, the CENTAURI Gateway 3000 family alsoprovides the possibility of audio transport via IP.This means, for example, that a signal lying at the audio input can be transmitted into the networkusing an TCP or UDP.

In the average case of audio data transport via IP, one IP-packet carries exactly one audio frame.Depending on frame length and packet size there is a specific overhead in each IP-packet. Anexception can occur if the data transport isn’t working correctly due to different possible reasons,e.g. network problems. In this situation, if the IP-packets are refused and have to be sent again, the audio frames are allocated to the IP packets in a different way.

Page 68: Centauri 200x/300x User Manual - MAYAH · Centauri 200x/300x, user manual as of software version 2.0.0.0 ... (Internet, Intranet, LAN, WAN). ... The block diagram shows how the CENTAURI

Digital Audio via IP

68 © MAYAH Communication GmbH

7.2.1. One IP-packet carries more than one frameThis would be the normal way of audio transport in a situation described above. As you can seein the following figure, the first IP-packet carries not only the first audio frame but also parts of thesecond one. The second IP-packet carries the rest of Audio 2 and parts of Audio 3. IP-packet 3carries the rest of Audio 3 and Audio 4 etc..

7.2.2. One frame is carried by more than one IP-packetIn specific situations, e.g. if the bit rate is high and the sample rate is low, the frame length can belarger than the packet size. In this case the first IP-packet would only carry parts of the first audioand IP-packet 2 the rest etc..In both situations it is necessary to get access to the frame header to be able to read theinformation about frame length, bit rate, sample rate etc.. How to get this information is dealt within the following chapter.

7.4. HTTP streaming over IP

7.4.1. HTTP StreamingIn loop-mode operation the Centauri 300x is able to generate one audio stream (encoder) whichcan be executed by HTML command files stored in the WWW directory of the Centauri. It can beactivated from any web client or media player. Note: For streaming with the Centauri 4001 StreamingServer see chapter 10.6, HTTP Streamingwith the Centauri StreamingServer.

7.4.2. Structure of HTTP Command FilesThe HTML command files have a strictly defined structure (see also sample files): Syntax:

<!--#exec cgi="/streamfile.cgi <Param1> <Param2> <Param3><Param4> <Param5>"-->

Parameters:Param1: [SlotNr]

Param2: [Algorithm]

Param3 [Samplerate]

Param4: [Bitrate]

Param5: [Mode]

– SlotNr defines the encoder slot that should run the requested algorithm. This value has tobe 1 for Centauri 300x, for there is just one slot available.

– Algorithm, Samplerate, Bitrate and Mode must be used as defined in the encoder sec-tion of the Centauri Gateway, Communication Reference Manual.

Streaming with different sample rates does not function correctly unless the rates are multiplesof the running sample rates. Example: A mix of 32 and 48 kHz does not work. A mix of 8, 16,and 32 kHz or a mix of 8, 16 and 48 kHz works well.

Sample files:Stream1.htm:

<!--#exec cgi="/streamfile.cgi 1 mpegl3 44100 48000 mono"-->

Stream2.htm:<!--#exec cgi="/streamfile.cgi 1 mp3pro 44100 48000 mono"-->

7.4.3. Generating HTTP Command FilesA HTTP command file can be generated with any common text editor. It contains one line usingthe structure described above. Additional lines are not read. The file can be saved under anyname with the .htm extension. After generating the command file, it has to be transferred by anFTP client program to the D:\www\ folder at the Centauri, where it is made available via the net.

7.4.4. Executing HTTP Command FilesThe execution of the command file can be activated by any web client or media player which ispart of the net. The following structure must be used:

http://[Centauri-address or name]/[command file-name. exten-sion(irrelevant)]

Example:http://10.0.0.255/stream.mp3

http://CentauriExa/stream.wav

http//Centauri-address or name/ activates a search in the www folder of the addressed Centauri. The name of the command file is only significant for searching. The extension only defines howthe data should be interpreted. This option makes it possible to execute different formats fromany web browser, which is important for HTML programming.Example: An HTTP request to STREAM1.mp2, STREAM1.wav or STREAM1.mp3 from a webbrowser is executed by the web server by the STREAM1.htm HTTP command file. All HTTP requests start an audio stream/encoder with the requested parameter, if no other audiostream/encoder is currently active. After the last HTTP request has been executed by the webclient/player, the audio stream/encoder is stopped.

8.3. Remote Control Software Registry Entries It can also be necessary to intervene in the registry directly in order to enter the CENTAURI’s tobe controlled. In such a case, proceed as follows:• Open the group

“HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mayah Communications\Centauri remote” in theWindows registry

• Create a new sub-registry with the name “IP”.• Create three new keys in the sub-registry “IP” with the names

– Address– IPControl– Port

• If more than 1 CENTAURI is to be controlled, create an own key for each further CENTAURIto be controlled in the group “IP” in addition to “Address” with the name – Address1 (for the first CENTAURI)– Address2 (for the second CENTAURI)– .... etc.

• Allocate the following values to the keys – Address: IP Address of your momentary CENTAURI (e.g. “10.0.0.10”)– IPControl: “TRUE” for IP Control and “FALSE” for RS232 Control– Port: '2000'

Port 2000 in the registry has nothing to do with Port 2001 that is entered in the CENTAURIunder “Network”! A change of one or both of these values results in communicationproblems!

– Address1: IP Address of the first CENTAURI to be controlled– Address2: IP Address of the second CENTAURI to be controlled– .... etc.

• Please take into account:– All entries are “case sensitive”. In other words, a strict difference is made between higher

and lower case for all entries.– The IP Address must correspond to the subnetwork mask of your network.

The following entries exist:

Glossary

AAC Advanced Audio Coding;Clipping level The clipping level shows when the A/D converter overdrives. In Germany a

clipping level of 15 dBu is usually used.Clipping level (15 dBu) = norm level (6dBu) + headroom (9 dBu)

FTP FTP stands for File Transport Protocol and serves the processing of filesin a network. FTP superimposes on the Transmission Control Protocol(TCP).The CENTAURI has an FTP Server that permits file access to theCENTAURI Flashmemory. This way, firmware updates can be installed onthe CENTAURIs easily and securely.

G.711 Coding procedure for data reduction; is used by all ISDN telephonesG.722 Coding procedure with a bandwidth of 7kHz (better audio quality)HTTP Abbreviation for Hypertext Transfer Protocol; works in the OSI layer 7.H.221 A protocol with which two devices swap information about which coding

procedure they master, and how the data flow is distributed in the case ofseveral ISDN lines. An ITU (Internationale Telekommunikation Union)standard to guarantee the compatibility between devices made by differentmanufacturers.

IP Internet ProtocolMultiplexing In principle there are two different procedures for multiplexing.

The first method compensates the time delay between two channels bytransmitting and measuring a test pattern. If the connection path changesduring transmission it leads to breakdowns, and it is necessary to set up aconnection again. This method is called BONDING and is mainly used in thedata communication field. In audio, principally by Dialog4, MusikTaxi, VPand VP-Pro.The second method (INVERSE MULTIPLEXING) uses a small portion ofthe data rate for semi- continuous checking of the delay. This method isused with J.52 and for CCS Audio Codecs, such as the CDQPRIMA forexample.

ISDN Integrated Services Digital Network; a service-integrated digital network.J.52 Digital transmission procedure for sound programs for high quality, that use

one, two or three 64 kbit/s channels for mono and up to 6 for stereo;MPEG “Motion Pictures Expert Group”; data format for transmission.SMTP Abbreviation for Simple Mail Transport Protocol.SNMP SNMP is the abbreviation for Simple Network Management Protocol and

represents a standardized interface for the management of network devices. All the parameters of a device can be set via this interface and all statusescan be requested. These individual parameters are referred to as SNMPobjects that are put together in the Management Information Base (MIB).The CENTAURI gateways support this protocol optionally.

TCP TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol and organizes a securedata transfer via a network, comparable with a point-to-point connection.Every data package that is sent from the transmitter is signed for by thereceiver. If a package gets lost it will be repeated by the transmitter after aparticular interval. If a package is received incomplete or faulty, the receiverrequests it again.

In addition, TCP guarantees that the data packages arrive at the receiver inthe same order that they were sent by the transmitter. In CENTAURI, TCP is used as the default transport protocol for audio overIP. A TCP connection is always bi-directional, both encoder and decoder areactivated.

UDP UDP is the abbreviation for User Datagram Protocol and describes anunsecured or connectionless data transfer. UDP does not have anymechanisms for confirming data receipt, nor does it have a procedure forflow control. In other words, UDP does not guarantee that the data packagesarrive in the order they were sent in.For audio transport via IP this means that transmission security and ordermust be ensured by another network instance.UDP can be activated by inserting the letter “U” in front of the IP destinationaddress. A connection set up with UDP is unidirectional. Only the encoderon the CENTAURI doing the calling is activated.

V.35 Interface definition for greater transmission speeds and analog wide- bandmodems. Works with a data rate of 48 kbit/s and uses a mixture ofasymmetrical V.24/V.28 signals and symmetrical V.35 signals. The distanceis therefore limited to 15 m. A 34-pin plug connection is used as standard, the mechanical characteristics of which do however vary from country tocountry. Since in Centauri’s case, V.35 and X.21 use the same physical port,a 26-pin plug connection is used here.

X.21 ITU-T standard for access to digital networks. As standard, the X.21interface uses the 15-pin plug connector as per ISO 4903 for mechanicalcoupling of the interface lines. Since Centauri X.21 and V.35 both use thesame physical port, a 26-pin plug is used here.

Event Action Programming

96

10.4.4. Example : Event Action ProgrammingIn this case the event is an interrupted connection for which a specific action file has been created. This action file includes various commands to, amongst other things, automatically establish a newconnection via another communication interface. The following example describes how a new connection via ISDN is built up after the existing IPconnection has been interrupted.

Creating Action FilesBefore assigning the action to the event, two action files are to be created. For this the followingcommand is to be used:action_create <action file name> <command1;...;commandn>

Creating action file backup:action_create backup event_set connect_off 1 normal true;

com_interface isdn; com_waitmsecs 500,

com_connect 1 0811551661Creating action file normal:action_create normal event_set connect_off 1 backup true;

com_interface net

The commands specified for these two action files are described in the following chapter.

Assigning Action to EventThe first command combines the event connect_off (as described in chapter 2) with the actionbackup.

The action file backup includes different commands (see above):1. The first line assigns the action file normal to the event connect_off if it occurs the next time.2. Within the next line, ISDN is selected for new communication interface .3. This command defines a break of half a second (500 ms).4. The last command selects the first B-channel for connection, sets the phone number (e.g.

0811551661, the Mayah test line ) and then executes the connection.

xt the other action file normal is described. This one will be executed if another connect_off eventdetected.

The first line assigns back the action file backup to the event connect_off.Then the interface is reset to net for establishing an IP-connection if the next connect command isexecuted.

described in this example, Centauri Event Action Programming provides an easy and individualy of reacting to events and problems that occur.

10.5. Point to Multipoint for Centauri 300x, 350x

10.5.1. Prerequisites• Centauri with system software 1.1.0.44 or later• PC with:

- min. Pentium 166 MHz- RAM 32 MB- Operating system Windows ’95, ’98, ME, NT or 2000- free serial port (remote control by RS232) or Ethernet card (remote control by IP)

• Zero modem cable (included in Centauri) if RS232 control is used orall necessary LAN cabling between Centauri and PC

• Centauri remote control with version 1.1.0.31Note:You can download the current Centauri system software and the latest remote software from thedownload section of the Mayah homepage at www.mayah.com.

10.5.2. Point-to-MultipointThe Point-to-Multipoint-mode enables the Centauri 300xand 3500 to receive/send data from/to several differentremote Centauri-devices. When processing the datatransfer one can choose which input is to be heard (fordetailed description see Centauri CommunicationReference Manual, chapter 4.2.10 ). For handling Pointto Multipoint with the Centauri Remote Software, youhave to choose <Settings/Others/Multipoint returnchannel> .

10.5.3. Centauri Remote SoftwareYou can type in all the necessary commands with help ofthe Centauri remote control software. Just step to remoteitem <Expert/Direct Command>. You may be asked for a Superuser Password . ThisSuperuser Password is determined by the first use ofCentauri remote on your PC. If the Superuser gets lostyou can recover it very easily. It is saved in the registry at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mayah Communications\Centauri Remote\SuperUserPassword.How to use the direct command dialog:Just type in the Centauri command in the command edit field and confirm by pressing the ‘OK’ button. You’ll get the answer in the answer memo box.

10.5.4. Settings with Direct CommandFor using the Point to Multipoint, special settings have to be established.Example:

1) Set format to automatic enc_format auto <Settings/Codec/Encoder Imux>

2) Choose the mode that is to be used:enc_mode mono <Settings/Codec/Encoder Mode>

3) Choose the bitrate. enc_bitrate 128000 <Settings/Codec/Encoder Bit Rate>

There are currently only two different bitrates available : For 1-channel-connection you have to choose 64.000 bit/sec.

For 2-channel-connection you have to choose 128.000 bit/sec.The remote devices must have the same settings as the multipoint-server. These settings can bemade locally on the multipoint server or on the remote devices. In this case the server acts as a slaveand synchronizes itself with the remote settings.

10.5.5. StartThe command com_receive [0,1] controls the activity of the multiplexer. The parameter [1]enables the Point-to-Multipoint-mode, whereas [0] disables it.Example:

com_receive 1 enables Point-to-Multipoint

com_receive 0 disables Point-to-Multipoint

10.5.6. AddressingIf the Point-to-Multipoint mode is enabled, the same command as above, but with a differentparameter, is responsible for addressing the B-channels that are to be used for data-transfer:com_receive[1..n], where n is the max multiplexer-index. This multiplexer-index can be derivedfrom following formula : n = max ISDN B-channels*64000 / EncoderbitrateThis means that for 1-channel connections n is the number of B-channels that are available, whereasfor 2-channel-connections n is the half of it .For 2-channel-connections the channels of the multipoint server can only be chosen in neughbouringpairs : (1,2), (3,4), (5,6), (7,8)Example:

com_receive 2 For the settings made above (bit rate 128000) this would mean B-channels 3and 4 are selected for hearing.

Generally the addressing of the B-channels only works in one direction. This means the multiplexercan only receive data with all its channels or send data with all its channels. The possibility to receiveon one channel while transmitting on another is planned, but not currently available.

10.5.7. Observation on FrontpanelDuring Point-to-Multipoint is enabled, the status of each connection can be observed on thefrontpanel. For changing from one connection to another, the keypad can be used. Which keypad-button is to be pressed, depends on the adjusted bitrate. If a bit rate of 64000 b/sec is chosen, pressing the buttons 1./ to 8tuv will show the status of the specific connection. With a bit rate of128000 b/sec, this means, two channels are used for each connection, the buttons 1./ to 4ghi willshow the specific status. The selected connection is displayed as M1, M2 etc.

Note: If a button is pressed, that doesn’t represent a connection, the framing-LED will be disabled.

10.6. HTTP Streaming with Centauri StreamingServer

10.6.1. HTTP streaming The Centauri Webserver is able to generate up to 4 different coded audio streams (encoderalgorithms) at the same time. The generation of the streams can be executed from any webclient/player by running HTML command files stored in the WWW directory of the addressed Centauri.

10.6.2. HTTP Command FilesStructure of a HTML commandfile (see also example files):

Syntax:<!--#exec cgi="/streamfile.cgi <Param1> <Param2> <Param3>

<Param4> <Param5>"-->

Parameter:Param1: [SlotNr]Param2: [Algorithm]Param3 [Samplerate]Param4: [Bitrate]Param5: [Mode]

SlotNr defines the encoder slot that should run the requested algorithm. This value is validfrom 1 to 4. Please note that only different slots can be streamed at the same time. Algorithm , Samplerate, Bitrate, Mode are to be used as defined in theencoder section of the communication command reference manual. The additional value‘none’ for algorithm is to be set for using the actual encoder settings, e.g. <!--#execcgi="/streamfile.cgi 1 none 44100 48000 mono"-->. In this case values for samplerate, bitrateand mode have to be set, but are not relevant.Note: Streaming with different samplerates only works properly if the rates are multiples of therunning sample rates. Example: A mix of 32 and 48kHz doesn't work. A mix of 8, 16, and32kHz or a mix of 8, 16 and 48kHz works fine.

Note: The encoder audio type (see Communication Reference Manual, chapter 4.3.10) has tobe set individually for each chain used. Default value is analog.

10.6.3. Execution of HTTP Command FilesAny HTTP request will start an audio stream/encoder with the requested parameter, if no otheraudio stream/encoder is active on this slot at this time. After the last HTTP request has been doneby the web client/player, the audio stream/encoder will be stopped.

File extensions of HTML commandfiles are ignored by the StreamingServer. This option supportsdifferent web browsers and the use of any extensions to start special players for the selectedalgorithms which is important for HTML-programming.

Example: An HTTP request on STREAM1.mp2, STREAM1.wav or STREAM1.mp3 by a webbrowser is executed by the Webserver through the HTTP command file STREAM1.htm.

Example files:Stream1.htm :<!--#exec cgi="/streamfile.cgi 1 mpegl3 44100 48000 mono"-->Stream2.htm :<!--#exec cgi="/streamfile.cgi 2 mp3pro 44100 48000 mono"-->Stream3.htm :

Note: If the used StreamingServer is connected to another Centauri, this is doneautomatically via Slot 1, so a simultaneous streaming on this slot will cause transmissionfailures. In this case use one of the other slots.

10.6.4. Issues to consider in case of double assignment of a slotWhen establishing a connection from a Centauri 300x to a StreamingServer, Chain 1 willautomatically be used. If this chain is also used for streaming, the following effects can appear: Atcertain intervals the audio will be pulled off and after a short break it is then streamed faster. Thiscauses a so-called Micky Mouse effect. To prevent this phenomenon the streaming should not berouted over the first slot in this case.

10.7. J.52 Connections

10.7.1. Prerequisites• Centauri with system software 1.1.0.13 or later

Note:You can download the current Centauri system software and the latest remote software from thedownload section of the Mayah homepage at www.mayah.com.

10.7.2. GeneralJ.52 : Digital transmission of high-quality sound-programme signals using one, two or three 64 kbit/schannels per mono signal (and up to six per stereo signal)

H.221 : Protocol, used by J.52, to exchange information between different devices about supportedcoding-algorithms and how to share data streams between several ISDN channels. It is an ITU(International Telecommunication Union) standard for guaranteeing compatibility between differentmanufacturers.

Before H.221 the problem with high-quality digital sound transmission was the different setting of thetransmitting and the receiving interfaces concerning the Encoder/Decoder algorithm, sample rate andsupported maximum bit rate. When the receiving interface worked e. g. with G.722, it refused allincoming data which hadn’t been encoded with this particular algorithm. J.52 has been developed tosolve this problem by providing a way to synchronize the different interfaces.

10.7.3. Synchronizing with J.52While establishing a connection the interfaces exchange information about the algorithms, samplerates and maximum bit rates provided by each. Depending on this information they choose anencoder which is able to be decoded by the receiver. The Centauri executes this process depending on the following parameters, adjustable either via theCentauri Frontpanel Display (Setup / Audio Encoder) or the Centauri Remote Control Software:

Front Panel Display Remote Control Command ParametersType Enc_algo G.722, G.711, Layer 2, Layer 3,

MPEG2-AAC, MPEG4-AAC *Dependency Enc_slave Local, remote

*) for detailed description see Centauri Audio Gateway, Communication Reference Manual, chapter4.3.2, Encoder Algorithm

• Dependency, enc_slave = local The locally adjusted encoder will be chosen if it is supported by the receiver. If it is not, noencoder will be used. With MPEG algorithms, no bit rate higher than the adjusted one will beused.

• Dependency, enc_slave = remoteThe algorithms will be compared and the first that is suitable for both interfaces will be chosen. The order of searching depends on the algorithm.

The information which will be transmitted to the receiver depends on the settings of the decoder.• Dependency, dec_slave = local

Just the current algorithm and the adjusted sample rate will be transmitted.• Dependency, dec_slave = remote

All available algorithms and samplerates will be transmitted.

Dual Mode

102 © MAYAH Communication GmbH

10.8. Dual Mode

• Centauri remote control with version 1.1.0.31Note:You can download the current the Centauri system software and the latest remote software from thedownload section of the Mayah homepage at www.mayah.com.

10.8.2. Dual ModeUsing Dual Mode the Centauri 200x and 300x are able to split an S0 and use different codecs forsending/receiving audio to/from two different remote devices. Thus the number of B-channelsbelonging to an ISDN interface can be arranged in different ways depending on the requirements ofthe different audio signals. For example it is possible to assign the B-channels 1 and 2 to the firstcodec while B-channel 3 to 8 are assigned to the second codec. Running the Dual Mode the Centauridemands a sample rate of 8 to 32 kHz in steps of 8.Note: If different sample rates are used for the two codecs, these should be multiples, e.g. 16 and 32or 8 and 16 kHz. Otherwise the audio quality can be reduced.

10.8.3. Available AlgorithmsThe following algorithms are available for Dual Mode:G.711, G.722, Mpeg Layer 2, Mpeg Layer 3 (only 64000 B/s), AAC (only 64000 B/s), Standard apt-X,Enhanced apt-X (only fast CPUs)

10.8.4. Settings with the Centauri Remote SoftwareFor handling the Dual Mode with the Centauri RemoteSoftware, you have to choose <Settings/Others/DualMode at B-channel>. The select box which will bethen opened, will contain a number of values, depending on the type of ISDN card installed. If theCentauri has e. g. an 4xS0 ISDN interface, the selectbox will contain the values 0, 2-8. For executing theexample mentioned above, you have to select 3because the third B-channel is the first one used bythe second codec. For disabling the Dual Mode, youhave to select 0.

• Exception:A special problem occurred when one 1xS0 ISDNinterface was installed and the value 2 was chosen forDualmode at B-channel. While in this constellation, removing the second established connection beforethe first works without any problems, but removing thefirst established connection tends to cause an audiodrop out on the second one. Solving this problem is only possible if a second 1xS0 ISDN interface is installed. In this case thesecond channel of each 1xS0 ISDN interface is deactivated. So corresponding to the example above,we no longer have channels 1-4 but just channels 1 and 3. Channel 1 belongs to Subcodec 1 andChannel 3 belongs to Subcodec 2. Both subcodecs now have only one ISDN channel each and cancarry a bit rate of only 64 kBit/s. With these modifications the different connections now work properlywithout any failures.

10.8.5. Centauri Remote Software Direct CommandYou can type in all the necessary commands with help of the Centauri remote control software. Juststep to remote item <Expert/Direct Command>. How to use the direct command dialog:Just type in the Centauri command in the command edit field and confirm by pressing the ‘OK’ button. You’ll get the answer in the answer memo box.

10.8.6. Settings with Direct CommandUsing the Centauri Remote Software Direct Command, the settings of the Dual Mode are to beconfigured with the command com_dualmode <B-channel> (see Centauri Audio GatewayCommunication Reference Manual, chapter 4.2.3). As described in chapter 3, the valid parametersdepend on the type of installed ISDN interface.

Example:

1) Enable Dual Mode and use B-channel 3 to 8 by the second codec com_dualmode 3

4) Disable Dual Modecom_dualmode 0

10.8.7. Settings with the Centauri Front PanelOf course it is also possible to adjust the Dual Mode settings via the front panel display of theCentauri. For this you have to choose <Setup/Misc/Dualmode>. Like the select box of the CentauriRemote Software, the display will provide values subject to the installed ISDN interface. These valuescan be adjusted by pushing the navigation buttons to count them up or down . If Dual Mode is activated the status of the two different subcodecs can be observed by pressing thekeypad-button 1./ for the first subcodec and 2abc for the second. The selected subcodec is displayedas S1 or S2.

Multicast

104 © MAYAH Communication GmbH

10.9. Multicast

10.9.1. IntroductionMultimedia transmission via the internet has become more and more popular in recent years. Theaudio and video signals are captured, compressed and transmitted to a group of receiving hosts. Thisgenerates several problems in organizing the whole procedure. Multicasting could be a way todistribute multimedia data to the receivers, while these may join or leave an audio-cast or a video-castat any time. The flexibility in joining or leaving a group provided by multicast could make the varyingmembership much easier to handle.

While Unicast stands for a communication pattern that sends data from one host to another andBroadcast represents the transmitting from one host to all others inside a network, the principle ofMulticast is to send data from one source host to a varying number of destination hosts, whereasthese hosts must have the possibility to request these particular data by transmitting a specificMulticast-address to the next router or „prune“ an existing Multicast connection.

The problems with Multicast arise when you think about how data will find the way from sender toreceiver. While normal radio or television reach their receivers by spreading data all over the worldlike a watering can, transmitting through the net has some significant restrictions, like bandwidth andworkload. The watering can principle would cause the net to collapse as much as transmitting a datastream via a point-to-point connection for each receiver. Another problem is getting the senders orrouters to know which hosts want to receive their data and which don’t.

The intention of Multicast is to need as little bandwidth as possible in order to keep the workload ofthe net as small as possible. This means not wasting any bandwidth by sending unnecessary data, but only sending to hosts that request data and sending it via the shortest and/or most efficient way. Ingeneral this means that the sender delivers the data only once and it is then duplicated by a router asclose to the receiver as possible.

10.9.2. The process of MulticastThe organizing of transmitting and receiving multimedia data is managed by a protocol called IGMP(Internet Group Management Protocol), by which clients can tell a router that they want to join or leavea multicast-group. This multicast-group is a quantity of sender/receiver, registered at their routers for aspecial Multicast-IP.

At IP level there is a specific range of Class D addresses reserved for Multicast. The four significantbits of the class-D addresses are set to 1 1 1 0. The 28-bit number following these four bits iscalled “multicast group ID“ which ranges from 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255.Each specific Multicast data stream is defined by a Multicast group ID. If a host wants to join a certainMulticast group for transmitting or receiving specific data, it has to inform its immediate neighbourrouter by sending the specific Multicast ID via an IGMP-telegram. This ID will then be forwarded fromrouter to router for to see if there are other Multicast group members (see Figure 1: Request forMulticast).

If the hosts neighbouring router now gets data from the requested Multicast group, it will forward it tothe demanding host (see Figure 2: Sending Multicast). Of course the same host is able to act as asender, too. In this case the neighbouring-router will transmit its data to all the other group members.

Figure 2 : Receiving Multicast

To leave a Multicast group the host has to „prune“ a Multicast ID, which means that it has to tell itsneighbouring router not to forward data of the specific group any more.

10.9.3. Centauri and MulticastMulticast is available for all Centauri 3000/3001 Audio Gateway, Centauri 3500 Audio Concentratorand Centauri 4001 StreamingServer which support IP-Audio.

To act as a Multicast sender the“Dependency“ parameter of the Audio Encoder has to be set tolocal. To receive Multicast data the dependency has to be remote, so that the Centauri is able tosynchronize its settings with the transmitting host. In both cases the broadcast mode has to bedisabled. This is to be controlled via frontpanel with Setup->Network->Broadcast or with directcommand ip_broadcast ?

FrontpanelFor preparing the encoder for transmitting or receiving Multicast data you have to choose Setup->Audio Encoder->Dependency

and set the required parameter. Then choose Connect and set the Multicast address viaDirect Dial, Last or Phonebook .

Direct CommandFor setting the parameter with the Centauri Direct Command you have to use the commandenc_slave [dependency] Enc_slave local : transmitting MulticastEnc_slave remote: receiving Multicast

Then use Com_connect [Multicast address]for connecting.

10.10. Centauri ISDN CAPI Trace

10.10.1. General concepts of the application interface Common-ISDN-APICOMMON ISDN API (CAPI) is an application programming interface standard used to access ISDNequipment connected to basic rate interfaces (BRI) and primary rate interfaces (PRI). For applicationdevelopers this standard provides a well-defined mechanism for communications over ISDN lineswithout having to adjust to the particularities of specific hardware vendors’ implementations. In return,ISDN equipment vendors benefit from a wealth of applications ready to run with their equipment.

Having begun in 1989 with manufacturers defining an application interface that would be accepted inthe growing ISDN market, CAPI is now a well-established standard. Potential cost savings were thedriving force for COMMON ISDN API controller and application development. Commercial users arerapidly migrating to ISDN as the principal medium for exchanging data in a wide range of formats.

COMMON ISDN API Version 2.0 reflects more than ten years of ISDN business implementationexperience in an exploding market. It incorporates all the benefits of CAPI Version 1.1 as well as allactual aspects of ISDN (such as Group 3 fax connectivity or video-telephony). It is based on Q.931 /ETS 300 102, but not limited to these protocols. It simplifies the development of ISDN applicationsthrough many default values which do not need to be programmed. It keeps applications free of ISDNprotocol knowledge, thus making a great variety of applications possible.

COMMON ISDN API provides an abstraction of ISDN services that is independent of the underlyingnetwork and of the adapter used to connect to the network. It provides an easy-to-use interface forapplications and offers a unified access to different ISDN services such as data, voice, fax, video, telephony, etc.

10.10.2. OverviewCOMMON-ISDN-API provides a standardized interface which allows any number of applicationprograms to use any number of ISDN drivers and ISDN controllers. Applications can be freelyassigned to specific drivers and controllers:

• One application can use one controller

• One application can use more than one controller

• Several applications can share a single controller

• Several applications can share more than one controller

Applications can use different protocols at different protocol levels; COMMON ISDN API provides aselection mechanism to support this. COMMON ISDN API also performs an abstraction from differentprotocol variants, creating a standardized network access. All connection-related data such asconnection state, display messages etc. is available to applications at any time.

COMMON ISDN API covers the entire signaling protocol as well as protocol layers 1 to 3 (physicaland framing layer, data link layer and network layer) of the data channels. The interface of COMMONISDN API is located between Layer 3 and Layer 4, and provides a point of reference for applicationsand higher level protocols.

COMMON ISDN API offers many commonly used protocols to applications without low-level protocolknowledge. The default protocol is ISO 7776 (X.75 SLP), i.e. framing protocol HDLC, data linkprotocol ISO 7776 (X.75 SLP), and a transparent network layer. Other supported framing layervariants are HDLC inverted, PCM (bit-transparent with byte framing) 64/56 kbit, and V.110 sync /async. COMMON ISDN API integrates the following data link and network layer protocols: LAPD inaccordance with Q.921 for X.25 D-channel implementation, PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol), ISO 8208(X.25 DTE-DTE), X.25 DCE, T.90NL (with T.70NL compatibility) and T.30 (Group 3 fax).

Even if not all protocols can be completely fitted into the OSI scheme, COMMON ISDN API alwayssupports three layers. Applications can configure each layer. In case of illegal or meaningless protocolstack combinations (e.g. bit-transparent 56 kbit/s and X.25 DCE), COMMON ISDN API reports anerror.

10.10.3. Message OverviewThis chapter presents the basic mechanism used by COMMON ISDN API, based on message queuesfor the exchange of commands and data.

The term message is a fundamental one in the definition of COMMON ISDN API. Messages areinformation defined by COMMON-ISDN-API, exchanged between the application and COMMONISDN API by an asynchronous mechanism. This technique achieves operating system independence.

General Message ProtocolCommunication between the application and COMMON-ISDN-API always uses the following generalprotocol:

A message is always followed by an appropriate reply. Messages going from an application toCOMMON ISDN API are called Requests; the corresponding answer from COMMON ISDN API iscalled a Confirmation. Messages initiated by COMMON ISDN API are called Indications; thecorresponding answer from an application is called a Response. This is also reflected in the namingconvention for messages: every message name ends with the appropriate suffix (_REQ, _CONF,_IND and _RESP).

Each message contains a message number. COMMON ISDN API always returns the number used inthe REQUEST message in the corresponding CONFIRMATION. Applications may choose uniquemessage numbers to identify message correlation before interpreting incoming messages.INDICATIONS from COMMON ISDN API are numbered so that an application is guaranteed to get adifferent message number in every incoming INDICATION.

An application is not allowed to send RESPONSE messages without having received anINDICATION. COMMON ISDN API ignores such illegal messages.

10.10.4. Message StructureAll messages exchanged between applications and COMMON ISDN API consist of a fixed-lengthheader and a parameter area of variable length, with one parameter immediately following another. No padding occurs in the message header or parameter area.Figure 1: Message Layout

Message Header Parameter 1 Parameter 2 ... Parameter n

In order to facilitate future extensions, messages containing more parameters than defined shall betreated as valid messages. COMMON ISDN API implementations and applications shall ignore allsuch additional parameters.

The message header has the following layout:

The message header is composed of the following functional elements:

10.10.5. Centauri and ISDN CAPI TraceThe Centauri uses the COMMON ISDN API for tracing the process of an ISDN connection. The CAPItrace of the Centauri provides a possibility to journalize all messages exchanged between CentauriSoftware and COMMON ISDN API. It will be enabled if the file isdncapi.run on the d: partition of theCentauri flash card is found at Centauri system start. The tracing is addressed to the filesd:\isdncapi.act and d:\isdncapi.prv which can be examined afterwards.

NOTE: This option is only for troubleshooting and analyzing. Normal Centauri codec function isrestricted in ISDN trace mode.

10.10.6. Executing ISDN CAPI Trace on CentauriCarry out the following steps to perform the Centauri ISDN CAPI trace:

1) Create an ASCII file called isdncapi.run on your PC

2) FTP copy the file isdncapi.run to the main directory of the d: partition of the Centauri flashcard (FTP user: Admin; FTP password: Power)

3) Reboot the Centauri so that the isdncapi.run can be recovered to enable the trace mode

4) Execute the Centauri ISDN connection(s) you wish to trace

5) FTP download the files isdncapi.act and/or isdncapi.prv from the d: partition of the Centauriflash card

6) FTP delete the file isdncapi.run from the d: partition of the Centauri flash card

7) Reboot the Centauri to disable the trace mode

8) Send the files isdncapi.act and/or isdncapi.prv to Mayah Communications for analysis

10.11. The New Centauri Keypad

10.11.1. OverviewAs many of you noticed, the Centauri series has had a new front panel design since the beginning of2002. Besides some new software features that can be adjusted via the front panel, some changeshave been made to the key pad and some additional functions made available through thealphanumeric buttons.

The most significant reason for developing a new front keypad for the Centauri series was theapparent discrepancy between the menu structure of the Centauri front panel display and thenavigation via the keys of the keypad. While moving through the different menu items was mostlyvertical, the direction of the arrow keys provided were horizontal. We considered this a bit irritating anddeveloped the new design for a more intuitive way of handling the Centauri functions via the frontpanel.

10.11.2. View of the old and the new CentauriHere is a general comparison of the two different front views

The front key pad of the old Centauri

10.11.3. What has changedAll in all there is not so much that has changed. The arrow-up button and the arrow-left button havebeen swapped as well as the arrow-right and the ENTER-button. This results in a synchronization ofarrow direction and navigation direction. If you now want to go down the menu on the front panel, youhave to press the arrow–down button and not the arrow-right button as before. Respectively, to go upthe menu you have to press the arrow-up instead of the arrow-left button.

The ENTER-button has been changed to a button with a right-pointing arrow surrounded by atriangular line. The function remains the same. With this button you can choose a menu item orsave an entry.

The arrow-up button has changed to a button with a left-pointing arrow represented by atriangular line. With this button you can, as before, go one level higher in the menu structure ordelete an entered letter.

10.11.4. Additional FunctionsAdditional functions are available with the new release via two of the alphanumeric keys. On the “*+”-key there is added a dial-symbol which stands for a speed dial function. Instead of having to gothrough the whole menu structure to establish a connection, it is now possible to do this directly frommost parts of the menu. By pressing the -key you will see following items on the front panel:Last(...)Phonebook ConnectDisconnectWith default Phonebook is marked. After pressing the Right Arrow button (Enter), you can enter aspecific phonebook entry number. With the new release these numbers are displayed in parenthesisbehind the phonebook entries. You can then establish the connection with Connect. The same fastway of stopping a connection is now possible by pressing the -key, moving to the item Disconnectand press the Right Arrow button (Enter). On the “#@”-key, there is added an open-book symbol which represents the phonebook.Pressing this key from most parts of the menu, you will be led directly into the phonebook menu. The functions that were implemented on these keys before are swapped to the keys “1./” and “9wxyz”.With “1./” you’ll switch at the beginning of a list, while ”9wxyz” takes you to its end.

10.12. Centauri Streaming Server w. Different Media Players

10.12.1. StreamingWith the Centauri Streaming Server MAYAH aims to provide a new audio web server concept thatminimizes administration costs while maximizing the number of listeners that can be reachedsimultaneously – simply connect the audio, set the IP address and stream ahead. The Centauri Streaming Server is able to generate up to 4 different-coded audio streams (encoderalgorithms) at the same time. The generation of the streams can be executed from any webclient/player by running HTML-command files stored in the WWW directory of the addressed Centauri.

These HTML-command files contain information about slot number, algorithm, sample rate, bit rateand mode of the audio stream. For detailed information see Application Note 6, Webserver HTTPStreaming. In this Application Note, Windows Media Player, Real Player and Winamp exemplify how to use theCentauri Streaming Server with different Media Players.

10.12.2. Windows Media Player

For receiving an audio stream from a Centauri4001 Streaming Server with the Windows MediaPlayer you just have to go to the File menu. Thenclick on the menu item Open and the Open-dialogwill be visible. Now you have the possibility to enter a URL withthe name or IP-address of the Centauri StreamingServer and the stream file you want to receive.Examples:http://www.10.0.0.255/stream1.mp3http://www.CentauriBsp/stream2.wav

This causes a search on the D-partition ofthe Centauri for the specified stream filewhich will then be streamed to therequesting Windows Media Player.

10.12.3. Real Player

Using Real Player, the procedure toreceive a stream from a CentauriStreaming Server is almost the same.Click on the File menu item to openthe popup menu and then click onOpen Location.

A dialog opens in which it is possibleto enter a URL with the specificCentauri address and stream file.

10.12.4. Winamp

The design of the Winamp applicationdiffers from that of the other programs. So the steps needed to get aconnection to a Centauri StreamingServer differ a bit, too.To open the popup menu here, youhave to click on the right mouse buttonwhile the mouse pointer is locatedabove the Winamp-window. There willbe different popup menus dependingon the position of the mouse. You willget the desired popup menu if themouse pointer is positioned at the topor bottom area, or on the equalizerarea. If you now place the mouse above themenu item Play, another popup menuis activated. Choose Location and, justas with the other Media Players, adialog will open. Here you can enter theURL of the required stream asdescribed above, and you will beconnected to the Centauri 4001Streaming Server.

10.12.5. Audio Quality MP3 currently defines the most commonalgorithm for audio coding, so WindowsMedia Player and Real Player can onlydecode mp3-streams. On the other hand,Winamp has the additional ability todecode mp3Pro, which features only halfthe bit rate of mp3 at the same audioquality. For this it is necessary to installso-called plug-ins.Click the right mouse button, when it ispositioned on the same areas asdescribed above, place the mouse on themenu item Options and click onPreferences when the next popup menuis opened. Now you’ll get a window which shows alist containing the available input plug-inswhich can be configured by selecting andpressing the Configure button. Toconfigure mp3Pro, select THOMSONmp3PRO Decoder.

10.13. Centauri StreamingServer with Multicast

10.13.1. MulticastMulticast defines a way of delivering streams via the internet that lies between Unicast and Broadcast. While Unicast stands for a communication pattern that sends data from one host to another andBroadcast represents the sending from one host to all others inside a network, the principle ofMulticast is to send data from one source host to a varying number of destination hosts, whereasthese hosts must have the possibility to request these particular data by transmitting a specificMulticast address to the next router or „prune“ an existing Multicast connection (for detailedinformation see Application Note 9, Multicast). The intention of Multicast is to need as little bandwidth as possible for to keep the workload of the netas small as possible. This means not wasting any bandwidth by transmitting unnecessary data, butjust send to hosts which request data and to send it via the shortest and/or most efficient way. Ingeneral this means that the sender delivers the data just once and it is duplicated by a router as nearto the receiver as possible.Multicast is available for all Centauri 3000/3001 Audio Gateway, Centauri 3500 Audio Concentratorand Centauri 4001 Streaming Servers that support IP-Audio.

Executing HTTP-command filesThe execution of the command file can be activated by any web client or media player which is part ofthe net. The structure has to be as followed:http://[Centauri-address or name]/[command file-name. extension]whereas the extension is irrelevantExample:http://10.0.0.255/stream.mp3http://CentauriExa/stream.wavhttp//Centauri-address or name/ activates a search in the www-folder of the addressedCentauri. Only the name of the command file is significant for searching. The extension just defines inwhich way the data should be interpreted. This option makes it possible to execute different formatsfrom any web browser which is important for HTML programming.

10.13.4. Multicast with Multicast-addressingAnother way of using Multicast with the Centauri, not yet implemented for four aggregates but for one,is to join or leave a Multicast-group by transmitting a Multicast-address. These addresses must belongto a number of special IP addresses reserved for this purpose. The range of Multicast addresses isfrom 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255. So addressing the four Centauri aggregates could look likethe following example:

224.0.0.10 Aggregate 1224.0.0.20 Aggregate 2224.0.0.30 Aggregate 3224.0.0.40 Aggregate 4Depending on whether the Centauri should act as a transmitter or a receiver for Multicast, it isnecessary to make some special settings. To act as a Multicast sender the “Dependency“ parameterof the audio encoder has to be set to local. To receive Multicast data the dependency of theencoder has to be remote, so that the Centauri is able to synchronize its settings with the transmittinghost. Note that the Centauri broadcast mode has to be deactivated for correct service. This is to becontrolled via front panel with

Setup->Network->Broadcast or with direct command ip_broadcast ?There are three different ways to make these settings and establish a connection.

FrontpanelFor preparing the encoder/decoder for transmitting or receiving Multicast data you have to choose Setup->Audio Encoder->Dependency and set the required parameter. Then choose Connect and set the Multicast address viaDirect Dial, Last or Phonebook .

Direct CommandFor setting the parameter with the Centauri Direct Command you have to use the commandenc_slave [dependency] Enc_slave local : transmitting MulticastEnc_slave remote : receiving Multicast

Then use Com_connect [Multicast address]for connecting.

Remote ControlUsing the Centauri Remote Control you have to click Settings->Codec->Encoder followsand set the required parameter (see pict.). Then clickExpert->Direct Command and enter the Multicast address. Or clickPhonebook and choose the Multicast address.

10.13.5. Multicast with IP-addressingAlso planned for implementation is a third way to use Centauri for Multicast. In this case, instead ofusing specific Multicast-addresses, normal IP-addresses are used for a Centauri to join a Multicastgroup. For this the parameter Interface has to be set to Network. As in chapter 4, the broadcastmode has to be deactivated again.

Front panelFor setting the Interface to Network, chooseSetup->Network->Communication Interface->NetThen choose Connect and set the IP address/stream file.[htm;mp3;...] viaDirect Dial, Last or Phonebook .The addressed Centauri StreamingServer will then send the required stream.

Direct CommandFor setting the parameter with the Centauri Direct Command you have to use the commandcom_interface netThen use com_connect [IP address/stream file.[htm;mp3;...]]for connecting.

Remote ControlUsing the Centauri Remote Control you have to click Connectand choose IP (see pict.). Then insert the IP address and thestreamfile you want to execute.

Using stereo and joint stereo with the CDQPrima

120 © MAYAH Communication GmbH

10.14. Using stereo and joint stereo with the CDQPrima

10.14.1. DefinitionsUsing MPEG Layer 2 with stereo or joint stereo for an audio transmission between Centauri andCDQPrima generates some unexpected problems. For analyzing the reasons for these problems, wehave to accent the differences between the two modes.

StereoIn stereo mode the right and left channel of the signal are completely and separately encoded anddecoded.

Joint StereoUsing the joint stereo mode, the signal only is completely encoded and decoded within the lowerfrequencies (up to ca. 3,5 kHz). Above that value, only the level differences are encoded (decoded)entirely, the phase information is not, i. e. the panning is not transmitted.

Stereo versus Joint StereoUsing either stereo or joint stereo with MPEG Layer 2 has an important effect on the signalsbandwidth. For example, with a bit rate of 128 kBit/s and a sample rate of 48 kHz a difference ofapproximate 5 kHz occurs. While stereo with its completely encoded information for both channels hasa bandwidth of about 10 kHz, joint stereo has a bandwidth of 15 kHz by neglecting the phaseinformation of the higher frequencies.Choosing between the two modes thus depends on the preferences. For e. g. classical music it maybe more important to have all panning information to transmit the sound of the orchestra as close toreality as possible. On the other hand there might be transmissions which pay more attention to thebandwidth and neglect the loss of phase information in higher frequencies.

10.14.2. Compatibility problemsThe problems with the above frequency-dependent encoding and decoding arise when a Centauri andits Automatic Codec Detection (Flashcast) have to get compatible with a CDQPrima. The CDQPrima has the peculiarity of dynamically changing its mode depending on the frequency ofthe incoming or outgoing signal. This means, that, if in the beginning of an audio transmission thesetting for mode is joint stereo and the signal surmounts the critical value for frequency, the modeswitches automatically to stereo and back again if the frequency is reduced once more. This results inthe signal LED of the CDQPrima blinking continuously because the mode is always changing.Of course this generates a failure within the Centauri because the Automatic Codec Detection(Flashcast) can’t work properly.

10.14.3. Solving the problems with the CentauriAvailable with version 2.0.0.0For solving these compatibility problems with the CDQPrima, it was decided to generate someexceptions for the Automatic Codec Detection (Flashcast) of the Centauri. Now if the Centauri detectsone of the following Codecs on the far end:

• CDQPrima• CDQ 2000/2001• Telos Zephyr• Prodys Pronto

and additionally these settings:

• Algorithm: MPEG Layer 2• Detected Mode: Stereo

the Automatic Codec Detection is disabled and the mode that will be used depends on the mode ofthe Centauri’s encoder. If this value is

• Joint Stereo the used mode is joint stereo• Stereo the used mode is stereo

10.15. Ancillary Data over MPEG Layer 3 with Centauri

10.15.1. GeneralIn some special cases explained below in this application note it is possible that the ancillary dataframing gets lost between the transmitting and the receiving device. This incorrect transmissionresults in overwritten or discarded data blocks.

10.15.2. DetailsWith MPEG Layer 3 it is possible to send a maximum of 7 bytes per frame of ancillary data (seeCommunication Reference Manual, chap. 5.5, Ancillary Data). According to standard, with a samplerate of 48 kHz one frame needs the time period of 24 ms to be transported. In this case one byteconsists of 1 start-bit, 8 data-bits as well as 1 stop-bit, so 1 byte corresponds to 10 baud. If we nowuse the formula for getting the baud rate needed, we get:7 * 10 / 0,024 = 2900 bps approximately

An adjusted baud rate of 2400 bps on the device can lead to the following situation:• There is more ancillary data sent with the MPEG-data than can be transported via the serial port

which generates a data overflow. If, in contrast, a higher baudrate, e. g. 4800 bps is set, the following problem can occur.• The Centauri takes more data than the MPEG-data is able to carry.

So there are two ways to provide an accurate transmission of ancillary data with MPEG Layer 3.• The baudrate of both devices must have a lower value than the MPEG data stream.• The device can have a higher baud rate as the MPEG data. In this case a handshake protocol is

required for organizing the data flow.

10.15.3. HandshakeThe task of a handshake protocol is to check whether the line is completely busy or not. If it is, thefurther transport of data will be delayed for a specific time interval so that no data will get lost.According to Communication Reference Manual, chap. 4.12.5, Ancillary Data Interface Handshake, there are 3 different handshake-protocols available with the Centauri. The following list shows theseprotocols with their particular difficulties in use.• XonXoff

Status information is included within the data. The same symbols can occur, when a file is sent. This can lead to failures.

• DSRDTR Wire not availableThe HyperTerminal program (part of the MS-operating system) doesn’t support this protocol.

• RTSCTSBuffer capacity fullFor this protocol the following zero modem cable is required.

Event Action Programming with TTL

122 © MAYAH Communication GmbH

10.16. Event Action Programming with TTL

10.16.1. GeneralThe Event Action Programming is described in detail in chapter 4.18 of the Communication ReferenceManual. This Application Note includes a short example for using the Event Action Programming withTTL inputs.

10.16.2. Example

Creating action filesThe command action_create generates an action file. The action file name is handed over as firstparameter. The following parameter are the remote commands that are listed in the file (separated by";"). The file name consists of at least 8 letters or numbers. As an alternative it is possible to transmit aASCII-file (called *.CAF) by FTP with the commands included to the directory "actions".

action_create Dial phone_execentry <nr>action_create Hangup com_disconnect 0

Two actions (“Dial” and “Hangup”) are created with these commands. “Dial” includes the connection toa phonebook entry with a specific number. “Hangup” leads to a disconnect.

Assigning actions to eventsThis command sets one of up to 5 combinations of conditions and action files for each event. If anevent occurs, then all 5 conditions are evaluated. If a condition is true, the associated action file will beexecuted. The standard condition is false to avoid executing an action file. This setting will not besaved! A special remote command saves all settings. Note: An open TTL-input Port has a high level (signal_on).

One TTL-Port

event_set centronic_a_off 1 Dial trueevent_set centronic_a_on 1 Hangup true

This example needs just one TTL-Input. If it is closed (off), the action “Dial” will be executed. If it isopen (on) again, the action “Hangup” will be executed.

Two TTL-Ports

event_set centronic_a_off 1 Dial trueevent_set centronic_b_off 1 Hangup true

This example needs two TTL-Inputs. If centronic_a is closed (off), the action “Dial” will be executed. Ifcentronic_b is closed (off), the action “Hangup” will be executed.

Two TTL-Ports with conditions

event_set centronic_a_off 1 Dial centronic_bevent_set centronic_b_off 1 Hangup centronic_a

This example needs two TTL-Inputs and describes additional conditions. If centronic_a is closed (off)while centronic_b is open, the action “Dial” will be executed. If centronic_b is closed (off) whilecentronic_a is open , the action “Hangup” will be executed.

Connecting two Centauries with X.21

124 © MAYAH Communication GmbH

10.17. Connecting two Centauries with X.21

10.17.1. Connecting Centauri with other devicesThe problem with high-quality digital sound transmission is the different setting of the transmitting andthe receiving interface concerning Encoder/Decoder algorithm, sample rate and supported maximumbit rate. If the receiving interface is working e. g. with G.722, it refuses all incoming data not encodedwith this particular algorithm. With the encoder/decoder-parameter Dependency, MayahCommunication has been developing a way to solve this problem by providing a possibility tosynchronize the different codec algorithms automatically. This parameter can be configured as local or remote. Local means that the encoder respectivelydecoder uses its own settings. If, for example, the Centauri’s encoder is set to local and the far-enddevice’s decoder-settings are configured in another way, accurate data transmission is impossible. This can be avoided by setting the dependency parameter to remote. In this case, for example, theCentauri’s encoder examines which values are chosen for the far-end device’s decoder, and thenchanges its own settings to an identical configuration.

10.17.2. Connecting two CentaurisThis works fine with nearly all devices from other manufacturers except for a few special situationsdescribed in chapter 5.1.1 of the Centauri User Manual. But what if the far-end device is also aCentauri whose value for dependency is remote? In this situation each Centauri is waiting for the other to send its settings for to establish its ownidentical configuration. Though there will be a connection established (yellow LED) the framing (blueLED) doesn’t work, so nothing would happen but waiting.

10.17.3. Requirement for connecting two CentaurisTwo different configurations are possible for solving the problem mentioned above.

Symmetrical connectionTo use Centauris solely within a X.21 net, at least one of the encoder-dependency-value has to belocal. This device doesn’t wait for the specifications of the other Centauri but immediately starts tosend data in its own configured format. The Centauri on the far end with the dependency remote nowgets the required information and configures its own settings identically.

Asymmetrical connectionIf the far-end Centauri is also configured local, an asymmetrical connection is possible.Example: Centauri-A is connected to Centauri-B

Settings Centauri-A: Encoder: MPEGL2, 128kBit, "Local" Decoder: unimportant, "Remote"

Settings Centauri-B: Encoder: MPEGL3, 128kBit, "Local" Decoder: unimportant, "Remote"

Then, after connection, following configuration is established:Centauri-A: Encoder: MPEGL2, 128kBit

10.18. IP-connections with two Centauris

10.18.1. TCPConnections via TCP are basically possible with an identical format on both sides. If MPEG algorithms (e.g. Layer2, Layer3, AAC) are chosen, different settings on local and far-endencoder/decoder are possible.

If non-MPEG algorithms are chosen, algorithms and settings have to be identical.

10.18.2. Particularities on reconnects with IP/UDP

A special situation has to be examined within this chapter. Given is an active IP or UDP connectionbetween two Centauris which is disconnected for reasons that will not be discussed here. If theconnection is now reestablished within the period defined by the ‘timeout’ parameter and in the sameformat as before, there will be a delay time period of up to 100 ms. If the reconnection is made afterthe timeout period or with changed settings, no problem will occur.

10.18.3. Particularities on not recognizable algorithms with UDPIf the encoder’s dependency mode of the receiving Centauri is set to local, the sending Centauri hasto set its decoder to local, too. In this case it is guaranteed, that via UDP the connection works in bothways.
