Specification Where shown on the contract documents, the self smoothing, cementitious floor compound shall be Cemtop 250T by Fosroc. It shall be capable of sustaining foot traffic within 10 to 18 hours, when applied at an ambient temperature of 27 o C. It shall further show an indentation of less than 3 mm at 28 days, when tested in accordance with the BRE Screed Test. The second coat (1:3 dilution) should be applied after 90 minutes or after the frst coat is dry. Puddling and ponding of the primer must be avoided as this can lead to failure at the bond line. Extremely porous substrates will require at least two priming coats. In this case, allow the previous coat to dry before applying the subsequent coats. The surface should be pre- soaked with wet hessian for several hours prior to priming and application.

Instructions for use

Preparation

New concrete should be at least 21 days old. The substrateshould be clean, sound and free from loose material andcontamination such as plaster, oil, paint and grease.

Excess laitence should be removed by light scabbling orblasting followed by washing and vacuuming to remove dustdebris. Light oil and grease staining can be removed withproprietary chemical degreaser, followed by washing withclean water.

Priming

Cemtop® 250T

Mixing

Cemtop 250T should be mixed in a forced action mechanicalmixer or by a heavy duty drill fitted with a purpose made mixingpaddle.

Each 20 kg bag of Cemtop 250T requires the addition of 5.2litres of cool, clean water to produce a free flowing self levellingconsistency (water addition will vary according to each sitecondition).

Best results are obtained by using the following mixingprocedure:

a. Pour 2/3 of the mixing water into the mixing vessel.

b. Slowly add the 20 kg of Cemtop 250T whilst continuouslymixing, until a smooth consistency is obtained. Mix for aminimum of five minutes.

c. Slowly add the remaining 1/3 water mixing throughout toobtain a smooth, self levelling, pourable mix.

Do not mix more Cemtop 250T than can be reasonably laidwithin the flow time of the material i.e. 10 minutes @ 27oC.However, ensure that subsequent mixes are ready, to enablecontinuous pouring of the whole area to be surfaced.

Application

Good site organisation is essential - the required thicknessmust be achieved in one application. Best results are achievedwhen the pouring and levelling is a continuous process untilthe designated area is completely levelled.

Pour the mixed material onto the primed substrate, spreadwith a trowel or squeegee and allow to self level. The materialmust then be rolled with a Fosroc Spiked Roller to achieve airrelease and final level. Rolling must be done immediatelyafter placing the material. Do not attempt to float the settingsurface.

If high spots or splashes occur these can be scraped off withthe edge of a trowel after initial set.

Points to note

Slabs on a sloping gradient must incorporate a damp proofmembrane in the subfloor.

Curing

Curing is generally not required. However under harsh curingconditions such as high ambient temperatures, drying windsetc., freshly hardened surfaces should be cured for two dayswith damp hessian completely covered with a polythene sheet.

Floor adhesives

Proprietary floor adhesives should be applied 48 hours afterapplication of Cemtop 250T.

Limitations

Application should not commence if the temperature ofthe substrate is below 5oC.

Cemtop 250T should not be used on floors known to sufferfrom rising damp, unless treated with a suitable dampproof membrane.

There should be no air flow over the floor area until thematerial has hardened (16 to 24 hours).

A minimum application thickness of 3 mm is advised tosustain the standard physical performance of the product.

In applications where high flexible material is required useCemtop 250T FLX.

High temperature working

It is suggested that, for temperatures above 35°C, the followingguidelines are adopted as good working practice:

(i) Store unmixed material in a cool (preferably temperaturecontrolled) environment, avoiding exposure to directsunlight.

(ii) Keep equipment cool, arranging shade protection ifnecessary. It is especially important to keep cool thosesurfaces of the equipment which will come into directcontact with the material itself.

(iii) Try to eliminate application during the hottest times of theday and in direct sunlight.

(iv) Make sufficient material, plant and labour available toensure that application is a continuous process.

(v) Water (below 20°C) should be used for mixing the groutprior to placement.

Cemtop 250T has a shelf life of 6 months and Nitoprime 33has a shelf life of 12 months if kept in a dry store in their originalunopened packages.

Store in cool, dry conditions in original unopened packs. Ifstored at high temperature and/or high humidity conditions,the shelf life may be reduced.

Precautions

Health and safety

Cemtop 250T is non-toxic but is mildly alkaline. Gloves shouldbe worn during use. Splashes to the skin should be washedwith clean water. Accidental splashes to the eyes should alsobe washed with water but should prolonged irritation occurmedical advice should be sought.

Fire

Cemtop 250T is non-flammable.

Cleaning and disposal

All tools and equipment should be cleaned with water.

Uses

Cemtop 400SD is designed as a thin layer industrial wearingcourse for use in areas that are subjected to both foot andforklift traffic. Typical uses are for reinstatement of existingfloors or as a final wearing course on new concrete floorswhere specified floor tolerances have not been achieved orwhere, for speed of installation, the concrete floor has beenleft with a tamped finish.

Cemtop 400SD is a blend of selected cements, hard-wearinggraded aggregates modified with polymers and flow agents.It is supplied as a dry, grey powder which requires only theaddition of water to produce a self smoothing, free flowingmaterial.

Cemtop 400SD may be applied by hand or by use of acontinuous mixer pump.

Note : Excessive loading should be avoided for 7 daysafter application.

Specification

Floor areas so designed should be covered with Cemtop400SD manufactured by Fosroc. The product shall achieve acompressive strength of not less than 20 N/mm² at 1 day andnot less than 35 N/mm² at 28 days plus a minimum flexuralstrength of 9N/mm² at 28 days when tested to Fosroc approvedtest methods. It should also achieve an “A” rating for the BRE(BS8204) test for Impact Resistance. The floor shall beprepared with the manufacturer’s current data sheets.

Design criteria

- Cemtop 400SD is designed for application to concretesubstrates and sound sand-cement screeds at aminimum thickness of 3mm to a maximum thickness of12mm.

- The substrate should have either a compressive strengthof 25 N/mm² or a surface tensile strength in excess of1.25 N/mm² and a relative humidity not exceeding 75%at the time of installation. The relative humidity must notbe greater than 80% if a Nitoflor resin based coating isapplied. Cracks and holes should be repaired withrecommended Fosroc products.

- When installed, the product will follow the existing floorgradient. If a floor with a particular slope is required it willbe necessary to use levelling equipment to obtain thedesired gradient.

Cemtop® 400SD

- New concrete floors should be at least 21 days old, priorto application of Cemtop 400SD.

- The substrate onto which the Cemtop 400SD is to beapplied must be generally clean, sound and free from oil,grease and other contaminants.

- Consult local Fosroc office for suitability of other floorsubstrates and floor repair products.

Surface preparation

New concrete floors

These should normally have been placed for at least 21 daysand have a moisture content of less than 5%. Floors shouldbe sound and free from contamination such as oil and grease,mortar and paint splashes or curing compound residues.Excessive laitence can be removed by light mechanicalscabbling, grinding or grit blasting followed by thoroughwashing with clean water, vacuum cleaning and allowing thesurface to dry. Light laitence can be removed by grinding orblasting followed by vacuum cleaning to remove dust debris.Light oil and grease staining can be removed with degreasersfollowed by washing with clean water.

Old concrete floors

Where deep seated contamination has occured, mechanicalmethods such as blasting, grinding or scabbling should beused to provide a suitable clean surface.

Any necessary repairs should be carried out using RenderocSXtra*† or Renderoc FC*†.

Priming

The substrate should be thoroughly prepared as detailedabove.

The substrate should be presoaked with clean water for 4hours immediately prior to application of Nitoprime 33*. Beforeproceeding with the application of Nitoprime 33, the surfaceshould be in a saturated surface dry condition, with no freestanding water.

The objective of priming the substrate is to ‘seal’ it, and therebyprevent release of air, rising from the substrate, and thusforming bubbles or pinholes in the surface of the Cemtop400SD. Additionally it aids adhesion between the two surfaces.

The substrate must be primed using Nitoprime 33 (1:5; primerto potable water ratio by volume) and allowed to dry. The primershould be brushed into the floor by broom. Spray or rollerapplication is not recommended as insufficent material willbe applied.

When the first coat of the primer is touch dry, a second coat ofNitoprime 33 ( 1:3; primer to potable water ratio by volume)should be applied to the substrate in the similar manner. Forhighly porous substrates, a third coat of the primer may beapplied with Nitoprime 33 diluted at a ratio of 1:3.

Ponding of primer must be avoided as this can lead to failureat the bond line.

Installation by hand

Areas smaller than 50m²

Mixing

Only full bag mixing is permissible. Do not part mix, or addfurther water to the mixed material in order to prolongworkability. Either of these actions will result in an incorrectwater:powder ratio, and will compromise the final materialperformance.

It is essential that Cemtop 400SD is thoroughly mixed andthat the temperature of the mixed material should not beallowed to exceed 30°C.

Measure out 3.8 litres of cool, potable water, into a suitablysized mixing vessel and mix a full bag of Cemtop 400SD. It issuggested that the temperature of the water should not exceed20°C, so that the temperature of the final mixed mortar is notgreater than 30°C.

Always add the powder to the water. Mix for 3 to 5 minutesuntil fully homogenous, using a 1 KW, slow speed drill (400 to500 rpm) fitted to a Fosroc Mixing Paddle (MR3) attachment.

Application

Pour the mixed material, immediately upon completion ofmixing, on to the dry, primed surface, spread with a trowel andallow to ‘self-level’.

Roll the surface with a spiked roller to promote the release ofany trapped air. Rolling should be done immediately afterplacement of the material. Do not over roll and do not attemptto float finish the setting surface.

The required thickness must be achieved in one application.For best results, the pouring and levelling should be acontinuous process.

Cemtop® 400SD

Note: If the mix stiffens, it should be discarded. Do not attemptto re-mix with water.

Installation by pump

This is a highly specialised activity and requires the use of anapproved applicator, who has been fully trained in the use ofproduct and equipment, supplied by Fosroc.

Expansion joints

Expansion joints in the existing substrate must be retainedand continued through the Cemtop 400SD. Fosroc has a rangeof joint sealants specifically designed for flooring, consult yourlocal Fosroc office for more details.

Cleaning

Tools and equipment should be cleaned immediately by flushingwith water. Cured material can only be removed by mechanicalmeans.

Curing

In normal conditions, Cemtop 400SD does not require curing,but in harsh climatic conditions of direct sunlight, drying windsetc., freshly hardened surfaces should be covered completelywith a polythene sheet for 2 days.

Coating

In areas that are subject to regular water immersion or chemicalattack from acids or organic solvent, it will be appropriate toprotect Cemtop 400SD with an epoxy floor coating such asNitoflor FC130*† or Nitoflor FC140*†.

The first coat of the epoxy floor coating should be applied within2-6 hours of installation of Cemtop 400SD and the second coatshould be applied after the first coat is dry, typically 12-18 hours.In areas where high chemical resistance is required, the firstcoat shall be Nitoflor FC130 with the second coat being NitoflorFC140.

Maintenance

Where Cemtop 400SD has not been overcoated, it may becleaned with a proprietary rotary scrubbing machines. It shouldnot be cleaned with strong alkaline based cleaning agents.

If Cemtop 400SD has been overcoated with any of the Nitoflorrange of resin floor coatings, contact your local Fosroc office forcleaning proceedures.

Hot weather working

It is suggested that, for temperatures above 35°C, the followingguidelines are adopted as good working practice:

(i) Store unmixed materials in a cool (preferably temperaturecontrolled) environment, avoiding exposure to directsunlight.

(ii) Keep equipment cool, arranging shade protection ifnecessary. It is especially important to keep cool thosesurfaces of the equipment which will come into directcontact with the material itself.

Limitations

Concrete slabs onto which Cemtop 400SD is to be appliedmust have a surface temperature of at least 5°C, with theair temperature maintained at 10°C, or more, duringapplication.

For temperatures above 35°C refer to “Hot WeatherWorking”.

Prevent freezing of Cemtop 400SD for 48 hours fromplacement.

Cemtop 400SD should not be applied to asphalt substrates.

If the substrate onto which Cemtop 400SD is appliedmoves or cracks, reflective cracking may occur.

Only suitable for use out of direct sunlight and/or dryingwinds during application and initial curing period

Cemtop 400SD contains certain powders which, when mixedwith water or become damp, release alkalis which can beharmful to the skin.

During use, avoid inhalation of the dust and contact with theskin or eyes. Wear suitable protective clothing - eye protection,gloves and respiratory equipment (particularly in confinedspaces).

The use of barrier creams to provide additional skin protectionis also advised. In case of contact with the skin, rinse withplenty of clean water, then cleanse thoroughly with soap andwater.

In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty ofclean water and seek medical advice. If swallowed seekmedical attention immediately - do not induce vomiting.

Fire

Cemtop 400SD is non-flammable.

Uses

Cemtop HD is a levelling product which provides a rapidsetting trafficable cementitious floor for new and reinstatementapplications. When overcoated is suitable for areas subjectto chemical or hydrocarbon attack. Typical applications wouldinclude:

Description

Cemtop HD is a blend of selected cements, gradedaggregates, polymers and flow agents. It is supplied as adry, grey powder which requires only the addition of water toproduce a self smoothing, free flowing material.

Cemtop HD may be applied either by hand, or via the use ofa continuous mixer pump.

Specification

The cementitious floor underlay shall be Cemtop HD byFosroc. At 28 days the material should achieve a compressivestrength of not less than 35 N/mm2, and an ‘A’ rating for theBRE (BS 8204) test for Impact Resistance. The floor shall beprepared and the product mixed and applied in accordancewith the manufacturer's current data sheet.

Design criteria

- Cemtop HD can be applied to both concrete substratesand sound, sand:cement screeds.

- The relative humidity of the substrate should not exceed80% at the time of application.

- When installed, the product will follow the existing floorgradient.

- New concrete floors should be at least 21 days old, priorto application of Cemtop HD.

- The substrate onto which the Cemtop HD is to be appliedmust be generally clean, sound and free from oil, greaseand other contaminants.

Instructions for use

New concrete floors

These should normally have been placed for at least 21 daysand have a moisture content of less than 5%. Floors shouldbe sound and free from contamination such as oil and grease,mortar and paint splashes or curing compound residues.Excessive laitence can be removed by light mechanicalscabbling, grinding or grit blasting. Light laitence can beremoved by grinding or blasting and then by vacuum cleaning.

Old concrete floors

Where deep seated contamination has occurred, mechanicalmethods such as blasting, grinding or scabbling should beused to provide a suitable clean surface.

Priming

The substrate should be primed in order to prevent air releaseand to provide a bond for the Cemtop HD. Priming is achievedby coating the floor with a solution of Nitobond PVA diluted 1:1with potable water. If, after treatment an even sheen is notevident on the floor an additional application of primer shouldbe made.

Installation by hand

Mixing

Only full bag mixing is permissible. Do not part mix, or addfurther water to the mixed material in order to prolong workability.Either of these actions will result in an incorrect water:powderratio, and will compromise the final material performance.

It is essential that Cemtop HD is thoroughly mixed and that thetemperature of the mixed material should not be allowed toexceed 30ºC.

Measure out 5.2 litres of cool, potable water, into a suitablysized mixing vessel and mixing a full bag of Cemtop HD. It issuggested that the temperature of the water should not exceed20°C so that the temperature of the final mixed mortar is notgreater than 30ºC.

Always add the powder to the water. Mix for 3 to 5 minutes untilfully homogenous, using a 1 KW, slow speed drill (400 to 500rpm) + Fosroc MR3 mixing paddle attachment.

Application

Pour the mixed material on to the dry, primed surface, spreadwith a trowel and allow to ‘self-level’.

Roll the surface with a spiked roller to promote the release ofany trapped air.

Best results are achieved when the pouring and levelling is acontinuous process.

Installation by pump

This is a highly specialised activity and requires the use of anapproved applicator, who has been fully trained in the use ofproduct and equipment by Fosroc.

Expansion joints

Expansion joints in the existing substrate must be retainedand continued through the Cemtop HD. Fosroc have a rangeof joint sealants specifically designed for flooring, consult yourlocal Fosroc office for more details.

Cleaning

Tools and equipment should be cleaned immediately by flushingwith water. Cured material can only be removed by mechanicalmeans.

Hot weather working

It is suggested that, for temperatures above 35°C, the followingguidelines are adopted as good working practice:

(i) Store unmixed materials in a cool (preferably temperaturecontrolled) environment, avoiding exposure to directsunlight.

(ii) Keep equipment cool, arranging shade protection ifnecessary. It is especially important to keep cool thosesurfaces of the equipment which will come into directcontact with the material itself.

(iii) Try to avoid application during the hottest times of the day.

(iv) Make sufficient material, plant and labour available toensure that application is a continuous process.

(v) Use cool water for mixing and also to soak the surfaceprior to the application of primer.

Cemtop® HD

Curing

Curing is highly essential. Freshly hardened surface shouldbe covered completely with polythene sheet for 3 days.

Coating

In areas that are subject to regular water immersion or chemicalattack from acids or organic solvent, it will be appropriate toprotect Cemtop HD with an epoxy floor coating such as NitoflorFC130*† or Nitoflor FC140*†.

The first coat of the epoxy floor coating should be applied within2-6 hours of installation of Cemtop HD and the second coatshould be applied after the first coat is dry, typically 12-18hours. In areas where high chemical resistance is required,the first coat shall be Nitoflor FC130 with the second coat beingNitoflor FC140.

Limitations

- Concrete slabs onto which Cemtop HD is to be appliedmust have a surface temperature of at least 5ºC, with the airtemperature maintained at 10ºC, or more, during application.

- Protect Cemtop HD from freezing for 48 hours afterplacement.

- For temperatures above 35ºC refer to Hot Weather Working.

- Only suitable for use out of direct sunlight and on internalfloors.
