You've carefully thought out all the angles. You've done it a thousand times. It comes naturally to you. You know what you're doing, its what you've been trained to do your whole life. Nothing could possibly go wrong, right ? ? ? Think again.

INTRODUCTION TO CEMENTING

When an oil well is drilled, steel pipe

(casing) is put into the ground. Aguide shoe (a rounded, steel cover)is place in the end of the casingbeing placed in the hole to protectand guide the casing.

Common Definition of Cementing:

5

e r mary emen ng rocess sthe process to fill the space thatremains between the casing and theformation (the annulus) with cementby pumping the cement slurrythrough the casing and back up the

annulus.

• Cement supports the casing,

• Cement seals off formations

• Cement helps prevent blowouts by setting rapidly

• Cement protects the casing from the corrosiveeffects that formation fluids (as salt water) mayhave on it.

• Cement rotects casin from shock loads when

drilling deep• Cement seals off formation areas that might allow

fluids to leak off (lost circulation or thief zones)

• Cement protects the environment by controlling the

flow of fluids• Cement can be used to plug an old well

(abandonment) or to plug a depleted zone

are: Primary Cementing

Secondar or Remedial Cementin

completed.

Common Secondary Cementing jobs

Plug back cementing

• Hole is plugged by cement in orderto initiate a new drilling operation

• Plug back is carried out for a

17

• Abandonment of the hole• Sidetracking the hole• Seal off lost circulation

• Shutting off of water or gasintrusion “Wet” Zone

Squeeze cementing

• Squeeze Cementing is the process of applying

hydraulic pressure to force or squeeze a cementslurry into the desired perforations, fractures, channels, or voids and force filtrate water from theslurry to create a solid mass which will harden to

prov e t e es re sea .

• The operation is performed during drilling, completion and work over operations

• Main purpose of squeeze cementing :-• Supplementing a faulty primary cementing job• Repairing casing defects• Supplementing a faulty perforation job

• Reducing water cut in a producing well
