Welcome to Celtic Flatpicking Guitar
This book is a collection of 47 Irish, Scottish and Cape Breton tunes arranged for flatpicking guitar in standard (EADGBE) tuning. The tunes range in complexity from the simple jig, 100 Pipers‚ to the more advanced Mathematician hornpipe by J. Scott Skinner.
The tunes are transcribed in both standard and tablature notation, and all have suggested chordings‚ so that you may play along with a friend. These chords are merely suggestions as there are many options and substitutions used in contemporary Celtic accompaniment styles.
Also included in this book is a listing of most of the scales used in Celtic music, a basic chord/key chart, and a discussion about the ornaments commonly used in fiddle tunes. Inside, you will also find ten general technique enhancing practice tips.
Here are a few points to remember while working on the tunes...
-Take your time and always aim for good tone.-Try and memorize‚ as many tunes as possible.-Alternate picking works very well most of the time.-Listen lots of recordings by the many great fiddlers, pipers and groups.-Try and be able to sing along (lilt) with the tunes, this will help you to remember them.-There is nothing quite as fun as playing these tunes with other musicians, jam lots!
Many Celtic tunes are played together in medleys known also as sets or groups. These sets may consist of as many tunes as you like. Often they last from 2 to 5, with each tune being repeated. When choosing tunes for a medley, consider key and rhythmic unity and/or contrast. With regards to the different forms, there are many ways tþ combine the tunes.
Here are a few commonly used orders...
1) Air/Strathspey/2-3 Reels2) March/Strathspey/Reels3) Strathspey/Reels4) 2-3 Jigs5)Jig/Reels
Here are few suggestions for sets using tunes from this book...
1) The Sailor's Wife/Julia Delaney2) Tripping up the Stairs/The Lark in the 3) Lord MacDuff/Sir Robert G.Gordon Baronet of Letterfourie/The Earl of Seafield4) Combined Effort/Dowd's Favorite5) The Foxhunter's Jig/Morrison's Jig/Cooley's Reel

Following ia a reference chart of basic chords (triads) that can be found in the commonly used key signatures in Celtic music. Included with each chord is a diagram with one of many possible voicings.
One should keep in mind that modern accompaniment styles tend to employ more complex chord structures (diatonic sevenths, modal chords) and rhythms to create fresh and exciting background textures.A rich knowledge of chord shapes, harmony and progression will greatly improve the overall effect. There are many texts available on these subjects.

Ornaments
-5-
One of the key elements in achieving a "traditional feel" is ornamentation. Listen to many recordings of fiddlers and pipers, and try to duplicate the nuances in their playing. With practice, the ornaments will eventually become second nature, and their use in the tunes will add a real sense of authenticity to the music.
Following is a description of the ornaments found within the tunes in this book...
A rapid triplet often notated as two sixteenth notes and and eight. Play these as fast as possible using alternating pick strokes.
Cuts or Trebles
Ex. 1 Ex. 2
Grace notes are executed as very quick hammer-ons, pull-offs or slides.Grace Notes
Trills should always be done quickly. First you pick the written note, hammer on the next scale note and then pull off to the original note.
Trills
When executing a turn, play the written note, hammer on to the next higher scale note, pull off back to the original note, pull off again to the scale note below the original note, then finally hammer on back to where you started. This should be done quickly.

Reels

Reels are played in cut time (2/2). Sometimes they are also notated in 4/4 time or in 2/4 time with sixteenth notes as the basic pulse. The accents lie upon the first and fifth pulses each measure.
Reels may be played with a straight or a swing feel.

D Mixolydian
This hard driving tune was written by Cape Breton fiddler/composer Jerry Holland. The first section is of moderate difficulty. The second section is an alternate picking nightmare. This reel makes for a great technique enhancer.

Practice Tip 8Moveable Major Scale
Here is one of many possible moveable fingerings for a major scale. This particular example is on a G scale. Start it on the fifth fret and you will be playing a A scale. Practice this shape all over the neck, then work out new moveable fingerings beginning perhaps on the fourth or fifth strings. The more you know, the better you will be at finding fingering options when arranging
a tune. Try singing along as you practice the scales, this will help to train your ears.

TraditionalDrowsy Maggie
This setting of the Irish reel Drowsy Maggie is a little different than how it is usually played. Traditionally the two sections are swapped and the Em part is first. I learned this tune from a magazine that presented the sections as I have here, and it simply grew on me this way. Fun tune to play!

Miss McLeod's ReelTraditional
This tune has been arranged using mostly the middle part of the fretboard. The use of the thicker strings adds more body to the tone. Again, lots of position shifts. The open third string in the first, third and fifth measures of the second section adds a nice flavor to the sound.

This catchy Irish tune was made even more catchy when fiddler Ashley MacIssac and singer Mary Jane Lamond put a real neat arrangement of it on the pop charts. Traditionally in B dorian, it lays nicely on the guitar in A dorian. A capo on the second fret will bring it back to the original key.

This tune was written by Cape Breton fiddlers/composers Jerry Holland and Paul Stewart Cranford. Both Jerry and Paul have written a countless number of melodies that have reached players and Celtic music lovers all over the world. This particular tune sounds very beautiful when played slowy over a subtle accompaniment of the suggested chords.

Practice Tip 5In Thirds
A good way to practice scales is to play them in thirds. For example (in C major), instead of playing C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C try playing C,E,D,F,E,G,F,A,G,B,A,C,B,D,C.
Try this in all keys.

The Gaelic title translates to "The Lads in the Kilt". It is a Scottish jig. The rhythm differs from many other jigs by the ocassional use of dotted eigth/sixteenth patterns instead of steady consecutive eigth notes. When you play this tune over a steady D drone, you can't help but think of the pipes. Very heavy onamentation in this one.

TraditionalThe Hearty Boys of Ballymote
The first part of this tune is a focused Em sound that, if not played too loudly, really opens up into the D major sound of the second half. Lots of left hand fourth finger activity in the onaments in measures 3, 5, 7, 11 and 15. This one makes a good opening tune in a medley.

I learned this jig from Scott's excellent book "Scoobie Tunes". Scott has written so many good tunes that sit nicely on the guitar. The Crosswords Jig is especially neat because of the contrast in colour between the end of the first section and the start of the second.

A Minor
The contrasting minor/major tonalities in the two sections give this tune a real neat flavour, especially when the first section comes back around if the tune isrepeated. This one is very popular and has been recorded by many fiddlers.

F Major
This tune has been set entirely in the fifth position. Using the middle part of the guitar neck gives the tunes a different tone and makes for added contrast in a set. The suggested chords move a lot, setting up a walking bassline.

A Major
Lord MacDuffAlexander Walker
This A major, Alexander Walker strathspey is a relatively obscure tune. It is a real fun one to play. There are a few challenges with the sixteenthnote runs in measures 3 and 10, and the triplet hammer-ons in measure 7. Don't play this one too fast.

A Mixolydian
This tune is based off a one bar theme that moves between A and G on an A mixolydian scale. The use of the C natural note (minor 3rd) and the Am (minor tonic) chord towards the end of the tune is a practice found often in strathspeys.

Here are a couple of useful moveable arpeggio shapes for a major and a minor chord. They are rooted on the fifth string and may be played on any fret. Try playing these
using both alternate and sweep picking.

Waltzes are fairly common in the old-time repertoire. This particular number is very pretty. Aim for sweet tone and feel with this one.

Not only is this tune played often at sessions, it also makes a heck of a great picking exercise. You will find ample string skipping in both sections.

This beautiful Irish slip jig sounds best when it is not played too fast. Let the first note (open D) of measures 1 and 2 ring as long as possible.

Practice Tip 9Moveable Minor Scale
Exactly the same as Practice Tip 8, except that we are now using a G natural minor scale. If you play the seventh note (both octaves) one fret higher this scale becomes a harmonicminor scale. If you play both the sixth and seventh note one fret higher you are playing
a melodic minor scale.

The Butterfly is a three part slip jig. The A dorian flavor of the second section leads very nicely into the strong G major sound of the last part.

This is a tricky hornpipe. You end up covering a lot of fretboard with this one. Watch for the fast position change in measure 8. The second half of the tuneis based upon wide arpeggios. Start slowly and work up the speed and accuracy.

The first part of this hornpipe shouldn't present too many problems. The second half requires that you shift around a bit on the first string.
