why go on exchange to NMSU?

A comprehensive land-grant institution of higher learning, New Mexico State University is dedi-cated to teaching, research, and service at the undergraduate and graduate levels. NMSU is a NASA Space Grant College, a Hispanic-serving institution and one of only 40 public schools in the US ranked with Carnegie Foundation’s Tier 1 “Very High Research Activity” and “Community Engagement” designations. U.S. News and World Report ranks NMSU in the top tier among Best National Universities.

With the majestic Organ Mountains to the east and the mighty Rio Grande to the west, Las Cru-ces stands as an oasis at the junction of the I-10 and I-25. New Mexico State University makes its home here, among fine art galleries, informative museums, a lively theater scene and high des-ert terrain. The sun almost always seems to be shining in Las Cruces, which enjoys on average 350 days of clear blue skies per year, making it the perfect base to explore the breathtaking sur-rounding area.

Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin is one of the world’s great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert, creating the world’s largest gypsum dune field. White Sands National Monument preserves a major portion of this unique dune field, along with the plants and animals that live here.

Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument offers a glimpse of the homes and lives of the people of the Mogollon culture (an indigenous tribe) who lived in the Gila Wil-derness from the 1280s through the early 1300s. The surroundings probably look to-day very much like they did when the cliff dwellings were inhabited. It is surrounded by the Gila National Forest and lies at the edge of the Gila Wilderness, the na-tion’s first designated wilderness area.

Western Legend Billy the Kid once stood trial for mur-der in a Mesilla courtroom, and the Mesilla Plaza was once a major stop for the Butterfield Stagecoach. Originally, Mesilla was part of Mexico, but with the signing of the Gadsden Purchase in 1854, the village became part of the United States. Today, Mesilla of-fers a wide range of historical and cultural events, shopping and dining on the town’s plaza.
