I believe that this issue of insight. can besummed up in a single title: Growth. Perhapsthese days people would call it “Growth 4.0”. If you look at our product range, our team ofexperts, our turnover and our presence atinternational trade fairs, we have been growingin every area. As Managing Director, this newissue of insight. shows me once more thatthe strategy, investments and work of recentyears have all paid off.

We are strengthening our position as manu-facturers of cellular rubber with a wide range,which has been consistently geared to marketneeds. Our latest cellular rubber productEPDM-PE meets demand for a high-qualityblend, that has almost similar properties to oursuccessful pure cellular rubber products – at amore economical price. You can find out moreabout the newest member of thefamily on pages 3&4.

And that is another innovation. The registeredtrade name brings together thecellular rubber range that we produce, currently

including thirteen different products. Of course,we are working to expand this product range even further for our customers – with qualitiesthat meet your needs exactly.

Expanding the brand also helps us raise our international profile. Quality from KÖPP will now be instantly recognised and establishedin areas where KÖPP has not been previouslyactive. Our distributors across Europe and therest of the world have been feeling the benefits.Find out more on the following pages.

There has been cellular rubber products available from KÖPP for many years. Some of them have even been around for decades. There are various reasons why an umbrella brand has now been developed. “Our range of qualities produced in-houseis growing. Alongside our natural rubber and chloroprene foams,we have also added varieties of EPDM products over recentyears. And we certainly have not exhausted our possibilities yet,as the market keeps presenting us with new material demands.That is why our International Sales Manager, Neil Stockdale, qui-te rightly asked for all these products to be brought ‘under oneumbrella’. We then quickly came up with the registered tradename , explains Managing Director Achim Raab.

The latest member of the family is the recentlydeveloped EPDM-PE. This high-quality combination of cellular rubber with PE offers nearly all the properties of apure EPDM. “There are only slight limitations in temperatureresistance”, explains Michael Decker, Head of Quality Management. “Apart from that, the new EPDM-PE combinesall the positive properties of PE and rubber.” Its propertiesinclude high elasticity, a surface that has finer cells and ismore velvety than pure EPDM, and higher temperature resistance than pure polyethylene.

In the last edition of insight. we reported on the expansionand re-organisation of our team. Our increased production of semi-finished cellular rubber also brought with it new challenges.Our international sales team grew along with our product range.Mélanie Baez, Mauro Bianchi and Bruce Zhang are now on boardto strengthen KÖPP’s activities in France, Spain, Italy and Chinalooking to the future. “I am glad that we were able to extend ourteam. We have found real foam experts, with whom I had collaborated successfully in my earlier sales work” says Head ofSales and Marketing, Axel Wynands.

KÖPP has carefully built up a sales team of locals who canbe active in-country. “This clearly adds something extra to our service for international clients. They have a direct contact personnear them. Also, there are no language barriers or differences innational mentality”, says Wynands.

Turnover figures justify the new concept

The success of the more international approach is borne outby the turnover figures for the current year. In the European market,KÖPP has seen an increase of over 20% in the first quarter of theyear compared to the 1st quarter of 2015. “Hiring Neil Stockdale showed us how successful we could beby actively building our customer base abroad. Neil has beenparticularly active in England and during his first year (2014/2015),he increased our turnover by 300%”.

As Key Account Manager for International Sales, Neil Stockdale has a big influence on the international salesteam. They are supported in the back office by Miriam Mapelliand Christa Kochanowski.

Participating in the K Trade Fair in Dusseldorf, theworld’s largest trade fair for the plastic and rubberindustry, has been a fixture in the KÖPP calendarfor years. This year we are there again, as a lothas been done at KÖPP since K 2013. We havere-organised our production system, and we nowoffer a wide range of material qualities producedin-house. That’s why our motto at this year’s eventis ‘Made by KÖPP’.

As befits tradition, we will position our stand in therubber section once more, on ‘Rubber Street’. Toshow how our company had grown, we havedoubled our stand area, as we have a lot of newthings to show our customers. In the next issue ofinsight. you can read more about the innovationsyou can expect from KÖPP at K 2016. All we cansay is this – it’s exciting!

Chinaplas, Shanghai –Networking in theFar East

Almost without stopping for breath, ourManaging Director, Axel Wynands, movedon to the Far East. On the way there hehad a stopover in Iran to attend “Iranplast”(13th-17th April) in Tehran. Although KÖPPdid not have its own stand there, it wasdefinitely worth attending to network andraise the international profile of our company.

Chinaplas, Asia’s most important tradefair for the plastic and rubber industry, washeld in Shanghai from 25th to 28th April.This was a good enough reason for us tobe present at this important event, afterBruce Zhang had put in the necessary preparatory work to establish an initial presence on the Chinese market.

Chinaplas is certainly not as specialisedas the GFA, but this means that it reachesa broader audience. To emphasise our quality as a manufacturer, we decided toput our stand in the German Pavilion,ensuring a good number of visitors. Potential customers included not just Chinese companies, but also many visitorsfrom South-East Asia, the Middle East andeven Europe. Our participation in this tradefair can also be marked down as a success.There was a lot of interest from the public,who were impressed by ourqualities. Our follow-up work will showwhich projects can be implemented.

We left the GFA Expo with the goodfeeling that our presence had helped stimulate demand for our materials andthat we can at least offer a high-qualitysecond-source alternative.

GFA Expo, Orlando –with sealing expertsin the USA

The GFA (Gasket Fabricators Associa-tion) includes a who’s who of the American sealing sector. The GFA Expo is held once a year, bringing together sealingmanufacturers and suppliers to exchangeinformation about new trends and developments in the area of sealing. It is anexcellent opportunity for us to present our“Made by KÖPP” material in the world’slargest market for cellular rubber.

This year the GFA Expo was held from5th to 7th April in Sunny Orlando, Florida.4 KÖPP staff members from management,sales and development went there to givea highly competent introduction of ourcompany. Of course, some of our known

All her colleagueswere particularly sorry to hear that she had deci-ded to leave Germany at the end of the year, hea-ding for warmer climes in the South of Europe.From October, Laure Walter, who you will knowfrom previous editions of insight. as Head of Pro-duction Management and Procurement, will fol-low in her footsteps and take over KÖPP Filtertechnology.

Of course, our Key Ac-count Manager, MarkusPeitz, will still be availablefor all questions relatingto filters, separation andventilation, to support ourcustomers and LaureWalter. As they unite for-

ces, KÖPP Filter technology will build on the last25 years of success.

To smooth the transition for our customers, thetransition phase has already begun. “Thanks toher professional background, Ms. Walter has agood level of technical understanding, which isvery useful when working with filter technology”,says Isabel Kalberg. The first task for the quali-fied engineer will be to get an overview of thecomprehensive range of filters, the technical pro-perties of the filter materials, and of course ourcustomer base. “After putting in this hard work, ina few weeks we will be able to gradually move onto our day-to-day business – it should all runsmoothly” adds Isabel Kalberg. Laure Walter isalready looking forward to the new challenge andto working with our customers in the future.

New equipment Demand for our materi-als has been growing steadily. Ourfactory in Romania has been growingas well, and we have continued to in-vest consistently in expansion of pro-duction capacity. This autumn a newFecken-Kirfel loop splitting plant willcome into operation, offering additionalsplitting capacity and also enablinglarger roll lengths and thinner layers.

At the start of the year a new coatingsystem was installed. This systemallowed us to add self-adhesive rollproducts to our range. Adjacent plotswere also acquired for expanding theproduction and storage capacity.

Equipped forEuro 2016A new table-football table

The eagerly awaited European Foot-ball Championship 2016 is about tostart in France. Football fever has al-ready broken out at KÖPP; not on thepitch but on the table. So our monthlyget-together has become an ideal oc-casion for a table-football tournamentwith our colleagues. The managementis glad to support this sporting fervour,and it has recently provided a high-tech table-football table, much to thedelight of all the table-football fansamong us. We wonder who will be(European) champion!

The aerial view of the headquarters inAachen is an impressive sight, not just incomparison to older photos; the premiseshave constantly grown, new halls have beenbuilt and new areas have been acquired.The latest photo symbolises KÖPP’sbusiness model: quick availability thanksto our large storage capacity.

“This has always been one of our biggestUSPs”, stresses Managing Director AchimRaab. “We keep investing in more and largerstorage facilities to benefit our customers.Quick availability of our products empowersour customers”, confirms Raab.

With 5,500 m³ of polyethylene andabout 2,500 m³ of cellular rubber in Aachenand a further 2,500 m³ of cellular rubber inRomania, KÖPP has the largest materialstores in Europe. “Our warehouse has a full turnover every few weeks”, adds Axel Wynands. This is a clear argument forsticking with this model in the future.

wife, Isabel Kalberg, in a few months, to enjoy life in Southern Europe (see thearticle on p. 10). However his hobby willcertainly not end when he leaves, and RalfKalberg has clear ideas for more artworks.
