ESSENTIAL QUESTION

• How do cells divide to create new cells?

MITOSIS

• A cell divides by copying its DNA, then splitting nucleus & cytoplasm.• Allows organisms to grow & repair.• One division that creates 2 identical daughter

cells.

MEIOSIS

• Produces the gametes (cells) used in reproduction.• Two sets of divisions creating 4 daughter cells

with half chromosomes.

BINARY FISSION• A form of asexual

reproduction because there is only one parent.• Used by organisms like

bacteria.• Offspring are genetically

identical to the parent.

1. Interphase • The time between cell divisions when the cell is growing.

• The DNA is not visible.

2. Prophase • Chromosomes condense and become visible.

• The nucleus breaks down.

3. Metaphase • Chromosomes line up across center of the cell.

• Spindles (arms) attach the chromosomes to the centrioles.

4. Anaphase • The chromatids are pulled apart and move to opposite ends of the cell.

5. Telophase & Cytokinesis

• Chromosomes separate and a new nucleus forms around each end of the cell.

• Cell membrane begins to separate into two new cells.
