Woman sues sister for assaulting childrenTDT | Manama

The Lower Shariat Court or-dered to register the chil-

dren of a woman accused of torturing under the custody of their aunt, citing that she wasn’t trustworthy as she is standing trial over the accusa-tions of beating them.

The woman was arrested for implicating in assaulting her

own children, mainly causing permanent disability to her in-fant. Teaming with her was her boyfriend who is also standing trial with her.

The aunt of the woman filed the case against her sister re-questing the court to have cus-tody of her children.

She argued that the woman has become mentally unfit to look after them following the

death of their father, although she was receiving BD1000 from his retirement pension.

She highlighted the fact that her infant was admitted to the ICU after inhumanely attacking him. The Lower Shariat Court ruled in her favour.

The duo will learn their fate in the other case on Novem-ber 16. They have been charged with torture.

Juggernauts grab spotlight from jumbos at Dubai AirshowReuters | Dubai

Th e n u t s a n d b o l t s o f p o s t - p a n d e m i c t r a d e

loomed over the first major aer-ospace event since the corona-virus crisis on Sunday, as plane-makers touted new freighters plans at the Dubai Airshow.

Plane giants Airbus and Boe-ing are hoping to launch the West’s first all-new flying jug-gernauts in 25 years as e-com-merce gets a boost from the

global pandemic. Airbus, with-out a buyer after launching a freighter version of its A350 jet in the summer, was knocking on the door of one the indus-

try’s go-to patrons for new plane launches, Steven Udvar-Hazy’s Air Lease Corp, industry sources said. And for best-selling small passenger planes, the founder of Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air was also seen ready to hand Airbus an order in Dubai, four years after taking part in a group of airlines striking a record deal at the same event.

Air Lease is expected to be among early customers for a long-haul A350 freighter along-

side an unspecified cargo firm, industry publication The Air Current reported.

Israel has a public presence at the show for the first time af-ter establishing diplomatic ties with the UAE last year.

Russia is due to present its Sukhoi Su-75 “Checkmate” fighter, a competitor to the U.S. F-35 that the UAE is buying as part of a deal with Washington following the establishment of diplomatic ties with Israel.

Figures as of closing

News in brief u The wife of prominent jailed Kurdish opposition figure Selahattin Demirtas has been sentenced in Turkey to 2-1/2 years in jail after being found to have provided inaccurate information over a date in a medical report, her lawyers said. Lawyers for Basak Demirtas, 44, said she was sentenced by a court over an incorrect date on a medical report issued by a doctor in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir in 2015, which she passed to her employer while taking sick leave. Her husband Selahattin Demirtas, the former pro-Kurdish party leader and one of Turkey’s best-known politicians, has been in jail for nearly five years on terrorism-related charges that he denies.

u An earthquake of magnitude 6.5 struck the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan near the port city of Bandar Abbas on Sunday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and Iranian state TV reported. The quake was upgraded from a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 and depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), EMSC said. “The quake was felt in several

southern Iranian cities in the Hormozgan province,” a local official told state TV. State TV said two quakes jolted the area, where rescue teams have been dispatched.

u Bulgarians began voting on Sunday in a third parliamentary election this year, with opinion polls pointing to another inconclusive result that could hamper efforts to tackle high energy prices, a jump in COVID-19 cases and widespread corruption. Another failure to break a prolonged political impasse and forge a functioning cabinet in the European Union’s poorest member state could also potentially slow plans for the country to adopt the euro by 2024. An election for the largely ceremonial post of president will also be held on Sunday. Polls show incumbent Rumen Radev, 58, is poised to win re-election for a second five-year term after a likely run-off vote on Nov. 21.

u Australia, quickly becoming one of most-vaccinated nations against COVID-19, will likely start administering the shots for children under the age of 12 in January, officials said on Sunday. Health Minister Greg Hunt said medical regulators are still reviewing the health and safety data for the vaccinations to be administered for children between the ages of five and 11 and are unlikely to decide this year. “The expectation that they have set is the first part of January, hopefully early January,” Hunt told the Australian Broadcast Corp’s Insiders programme. “But they’re going as quickly as possible.” The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this month recommended the Pfizer Inc (PFE.N)/BioNTech SE shot for broad use in the 5-11 age group, after it was authorized by the Food and Drug Administration.

The two back-to-back airstrikes near the town of Baghuz were ordered by a classified American special operations unit tasked with ground operations in Syria, according to the report.

The newspaper said that US

Central Command, which over-saw US air operations in Syria, acknowledged the strikes for the first time this week and said they were justified.

In a statement on Saturday, Central Command reiterated the account it gave the newspaper that 80 people were killed in the

strikes including 16 Islamic State fighters and four civilians. The military said it was unclear if the other 60 people were civilians, partly because women and chil-dren could have been combatants.

In Saturday’s statement, the military said the strikes were “legitimate self-defence,” pro-

portional and that “appropriate steps were taken to rule out the presence of civilians.”

“We abhor the loss of innocent life and take all possible measures to prevent them. In this case, we self-reported and investigated the strike according to our own evi-dence and take full responsibility

for the unintended loss of life,” Central Command said.

The number of civilians among the 60 fatalities could not be determined because “multiple armed women and at least one armed child were observed” in video of the events, it said, adding that the majority of the 60 were likely combatants.

Central Command said the strikes took place while Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were under heavy fire and in danger of being overrun and the SDF had re-ported the area clear of civilians.

The Defence Department’s inspector general launched an inquiry into the March 18, 2019,

incident, but its report was ulti-mately “stripped” of any mention of the bombing and a thorough, independent probe never took place, according to the Times. The newspaper said its report was based on confidential doc-uments and descriptions of clas-sified reports, as well as inter-views with personnel directly involved.

An Air Force lawyer present in the operations centre at the time believed the strikes were possible war crimes and later alerted the Defence Department’s inspector general and the Senate Armed Services Committee when no ac-tion was taken, the Times said.

Saudi Arabia sees no purpose in engaging Lebanon at this time, says foreign ministerReuters | Dubai

Saudi Arabia’s for-eign minister said

the kingdom does not plan to engage with the Lebanese govern-ment at this time, re-iterating a call on the political class to end the “domination” of the Iran-allied Hezbollah movement.

Lebanon is facing its worst diplomatic cri-sis yet with Gulf states, spurred by a minister’s cr i t ical comments about the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen that prompted Riyadh

to expel Lebanon’s ambassador, recall its own envoy and ban all imports from Lebanon.

“We see no useful purpose of engaging with the Lebanese gov-ernment at this point in time,” Foreign Min-ister Prince Faisal bin

Farhan al-Saud told France 24 television in an interview.

“We think that the political class needs to step up and take the necessary actions to liberate Lebanon from the domination of Hez-bollah, and through

Hezbollah, Iran.”Riyadh said its ac-

tions were driven not just by Kordahi’s com-ments, made before the cabinet formation, but rather its objection to the growing heft of Hezbollah in Lebanese politics.

Kuwait emir accepts govt resignationReuters | Dubai

Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmed al-Sabah accepted

yesterday the resignation of the government, state news agency KUNA reported, as country’s rulers seek to end a feud with lawmakers that has hindered fiscal reforms.

Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah submitted on Nov. 8 the resignation of his cabinet, formed in March.

An Emiri decree asked the out-going government to remain in a caretaker capacity until a new cabinet is formed, KUNA said.

The disagreement centres on the prime minister having been granted temporary immunity by parliament protecting him against questioning from MPs on issues including handling the COVID-19 pandemic and corruption until

the end of 2022. It has hindered efforts to boost state finances - hit hard last year by low oil prices and the pandemic - and enact a debt law needed to tap global markets.

Japan’s ex-princess Mako, the emperor’s niece, departed

the country with her new hus-band yesterday to start a new life in the United States.

Known as Mako Komuro af-ter giving up her royal title to marry college sweetheart Kei Komuro last month, the former royal and her husband, both 30, walked past waiting journalists at Tokyo’s Haneda Internation-al Airport before boarding an ANA flight for New York.

Well-wishers waved from the terminal as the plane left the gate.

Their marriage captivated Japan and ignited a public di-alogue about gender roles and media coverage of the royal family. Mako was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder this year after their engagement was plagued by a money scandal, intense media scrutiny and the couple’s three-

Philippines ‘Bong’ vs ‘Bongbong’ drama builds, Duterte move eyed

• Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, a Duterte loyalist, registered on Saturday to run for president

• Duterte is expected to throw his hat in the vice presidential ring and run against his daughter

Reuters | Manila

Philippine voters were brac-ing on Sunday for more dra-

ma in a presidential race that already features a “Bong” vs “Bongbong” match-up and a potential 11th-hour challenge by President Rodrigo Duterte against his own daughter for the No. 2 post.

The jockeying before Mon-day’s registration deadline bol-sters the view that the 2022 election will be dominated by powerful family dynasties rath-er than reforms.

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, a Duterte loyalist, regis-tered on Saturday to run for president after withdrawing from the vice presidential race, pitting himself against rivals including Ferdinand “Bong-bong” Marcos Jr, son of the late dictator.

Sara Duterte-Carpio, who had been expected to run to succeed her father - who is barred by the constitution from seeking re-election - instead registered for vice president.

Duterte’s communication secretary, Martin Andanar, said on Saturday the 76-year old leader, who only last month promised to retire from poli-tics, would throw his hat in the vice presidential ring and run against his daughter.

Duterte said on Sunday he would make known his plans

for the 2022 election “in a mat-ter of hours” and that he was fully behind long-time aide Go - who for his part said he did not want to run against the president’s daughter.

Go, widely seen as the gate-keeper to the president, could benefit from the president’s popularity. Marcos said he wanted Duterte-Carpio, the popular mayor of Davao, to run on his ticket. She has yet to re-spond.

A Marcos and Duterte-Car-pio ticket is a team to watch out for as both have relatively per-formed well in opinion surveys, political analysts say.

“Marcos is a very strong can-didate from all indications,” An-tonio La Vina, professor of law and politics at the Ateneo de Manila University, said.

Duterte-Carpio, for her part, said on Facebook that her de-cision to seek the No. 2 post, instead of the presidency, was

her way to meet her supporters half-way.

If the president does run for vice president with Go, they could take votes away from his daughter’s ticket, having some impact on Marcos’s bid, La Vina said.

Marcos, whose presiden-tial candidacy has stirred an-ger among victims of his fa-ther’s brutal era of martial law, is facing a disqualification case.

President Duterte, in an in-terview with a YouTube vlog-ger, said he had been surprised by his daughter’s election plans, as she had been leading in the polls for president.

“I didn’t know about it. I don’t ask. We have not been talking,” Duterte said in the in-terview, a transcript of which was provided to reporters on Sunday.

“The drama is not yet over,” La Vina said.

UN climate agreement clinched after late drama over coal• India led demand for last-minute change on coal power

• New draft retains call for reduced fossil fuel subsidies

• Nations at odds over how to keep 1.5C goal alive

• Poor countries seek funds to tackle climate change

Reuters | Glasgow

UN climate talks ended Sat-urday with a deal that for the first time targeted fossil

fuels as the key driver of glob-al warming, even as coal-reliant countries lobbed last-minute ob-jections.

While the agreement won ap-plause for keeping alive the hope of capping global warming at

1.5 degrees Celsius, many of the nearly 200 national delegations wished they’d come away with more.

“If it’s a good negotiation, all the parties are uncomfortable,” US climate envoy John Kerry said in the final meeting to approve the Glasgow Climate Pact. “And this has been, I think, a good ne-gotiation.”

The two-week conference in Scotland delivered a major win in resolving the rules around carbon markets, but it did little to assuage

vulnerable countries’ concerns about long-promised climate fi-nancing from rich nations.

The British COP26 president, Alok Sharma, was visibly emo-tional before banging down his gavel to signal there were no ve-toes to the pact, after the talks had extended overtime – and over-night – into Saturday.

There was last-minute drama as India, backed by China and other coal-dependent developing nations, rejected a clause calling for the “phase out” of coal-fired

power. After a huddle between the envoys from China, India, the United States and European Union, the clause was hurried-ly amended to ask countries to “phase down” their coal use.

India’s environment and cli-mate minister, Bhupender Ya-dav, said the revision reflected the “national circumstances of emerging economies.”

“We are becoming the voice of the developing countries,” he told Reuters, saying the pact had “singled out” coal but kept quiet

about oil and natural gas.“We made our effort to make a

consensus that is reasonable for developing countries and reason-able for climate justice,” he said, alluding to the fact that rich na-tions historically have emitted the largest share of greenhouse gases.

The single-word change was met with dismay by both rich countries in Europe and small island nations along with others still developing.

“We believe we have been side-lined in a non-transparent and non-inclusive process,” Mexico’s envoy Camila Isabel Zepeda Liz-ama said.

“We all have remaining con-cerns but were told we could not reopen the text … while others can still ask to water down their promises.”

But Mexico and others said they would let the revised agree-ment stand.

“The approved texts are a com-promise,” said UN Secretary-Gen-eral Antonio Guterres.

“They reflect the interests, the conditions, the contradictions and the state of political will in the world today.”

Russia starts missile supplies to India despite US sanctions riskReuters | Moscow

Russia has started sup-plying India with S-400

air defence missile systems, Russian news agencies re-ported yesterday citing Dmitry Shugayev, the head of the Russian military co-operation agency.

The supplies put India at risk of sanctions from the United States under a 2017 US law aimed at deterring countries from buying Rus-sian military hardware.

“The first supplies have already been started,” Inter-fax cited Shugayev as saying on Sunday at an aerospace trade show in Dubai.

He said that the first unit of an S-400 systems will ar-rive in India by the end of this year.

The $5.5 billion deal for five long-range surface-to-air missile systems, which India says it needs to coun-ter a threat from China, was signed in 2018.

India faces a range of financial sanctions from the United States under Countering America’s Ad-versaries Through Sanc-tions Act (CAATSA), which names Russia an adversary alongside North Korea and Iran for its actions against Ukraine, interference in the US 2016 elections and help to Syria.

New Delhi said it has a strategic partnership with both the United States and Russia while Washington told India it was unlikely to get a waiver from CAATSA.

Last year the United Stat-ed imposed sanctions citing CAATSA on NATO ally Turkey for acquiring S-400 missiles from Russia. Washington also removed Turkey from a F-35 stealth fighter jet pro-gram, the most advanced aircraft in the US arsenal, used by NATO members.

Ryan Reynolds admits taking acting hiatus to spend time with his daughters

Pinkvilla | Los Angeles

Ryan Reynolds is willing to put work on hold for a while in order to concentrate fully on becoming a father. In an interview with BDG’s

Fatherly, the 45-year-old Red Notice star expands on his previously stated decision to take a sabbatical from filmmaking until at least the summer of next year.

“You can’t say you’re doing that without recognizing the obscene privilege it is to be able to do that,” he acknowledges about taking time off, as per People. Reynolds also adds that part of his decision to retire from acting was to allow his wife, Blake Lively, to concentrate more on her profession. Additionally, he can also spend more time with their three kids, James, 6, Inez, 5, and Betty, 2. “Part of it is to allow Blake to do some of the things that she wants to do and get to play in her own sandbox. And the other part is purely selfish. It’s just that I don’t want to miss this time.”

Reynolds further said as per PEOPLE, “You don’t get this time back. And my kids

are in school now, so they can’t travel with me to loca-tion. I have to be there. So it’s important and I’m super lucky I get to do it.” How-ever, Ryan jokes it is “quite

literally a circus all the time” at their household with three young girls. Reynolds says it is “quite literally a circus all the time” at their household with three young girls.

As for how he and Lively, 34, usually split up parenting duties to stay sane, he explains, “We look

at everything like we share everything.

We’re friends first and foremost, and that’s the biggest part of it.”

Marsh powers Australia to maiden T20 World Cup titleAustralia win their first T20 World Cup after eight-wicket victory over New Zealand

• Mitchell Marsh hits unbeaten to win final

AFP | Dubai

Australia’s great Twenty20 drought is finally over after Mitch Marsh lifted

them to an eight-wicket win over New Zealand in the World Cup final in Dubai.

Chasing 173 for victory, Marsh was the hero for Australia yes-terday as he whacked an un-beaten 77 from 50 balls to set up the win with seven balls to spare.

David Warner also hit 53 from 38 as part of a 92-run sec-ond-wicket stand with Marsh, ending a 14-year wait for Aus-tralia to claim the one trophy that has eluded them.

After Kane Williamson’s 85 from 48 balls gave New Zealand real hope and Aaron Finch fell early, Australia needed a man to stand up in the chase.

And it was Marsh who stepped up in one of his finest hours as an Australian cricketer.

He put Adam Milne into the crowd at backward square the first ball he faced, and sent the next two deliveries to the boundary in a sign of things to come.

He made a clear statement of force against each of the Black Caps’ bowlers, dispatching Jim-my Neesham and Mitch Santner

for six off the first balls they bowled.

The right-hander also took another Ish Sodhi over for 16, as the legspinner lost his way and the game got away from New Zealand.

Out of the picture in interna-tional cricket months ago and after only playing 15 T20s for Australia in the 10 years before 2021, the tournament has been a coming of age for Marsh.

The West Australian averaged 61.66 in the UAE at a strike-rate of above 145, while his year is now the most prolific of any Australian in the T20 format.

He finished yesterday night with 10 boundaries - including four sixes - as Australia made light work of the biggest chase

in T20 World Cup final history.Warner’s supporting knock

was his third half-century of the tournament, after he entered with question marks over his own form after being axed from his IPL side.

Glenn Maxwell also stood up the death, cruising to 28 from 18 before hitting the winning runs with a switch-hit.

The big chase came after Josh Hazlewood had earlier been Australia’s best with the ball, on a night where a dropped catch in the field threatened to leave him as the villain.

Hazlewood’s figures of 3-16 included 14 dot balls in the pow-erplay, after he also claimed Daryl Mitchell early with a slower ball.

But his bad drop of William-son threatened to prove costly, when he put the New Zealand captain down on 21 off as many balls at fine leg.

It prompted an explosion from the Black Caps, as Wil-liamson took 19 off that Starc over and 22 off another with the left-armer struggling to hit his length and finished 0-60.

New Zealand hit 115 from their final 10 overs, with eight of Williamson’s 13 boundaries coming from Starc as he pum-melled Australia all around the ground.

Hazlewood, Pat Cummins (0-27) and Adam Zampa (1-26) were in comparison miserly, al-lowing Australia’s batsmen to create history with the chase.

Bottas takes Brazil GP pole on Hamilton’s up and down day

• Bottas ahead of Verstappen

• Hamilton to start 10th

AFP | Sao Paulo

Valtteri Bottas took pole po-sition for the Brazil Grand

Prix on Saturday as teammate and world champion Lewis Hamilton endured a contro-versial day off the Interlagos track and a storming drive on it.

Bottas claimed pole for yes-terday’s showpiece by winning the 24-lap sprint race.

World championship leader Max Verstappen will start the grand prix beside the Finn on the front row in his Red Bull.

It was Hamilton, however, who ended the day as the chief headline maker.

The seven-time world cham-pion, who now trails Verstap-pen by 21 points in the title race with four events left, was rele-gated to the back of the grid for Saturday’ sprint.

That was due to his disquali-fication from Friday qualifying, where he had been the fastest man on the track, after his car was judged to have breached technical rules.

He then shrugged off that set-back by storming through the field from last place to finish fifth in the sprint.

However, he was still to start yesterday’s race in 10th place

having already been given a five-place grid penalty for an engine change on his Mercedes.

“Brilliant job, damage limita-tion,” said Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff.

“Copy,” replied Hamilton. “It’s not over yet.”

Verstappen was passed by Bottas on the first corner and then briefly by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz before coming home in second place.

“The start itself wasn’t the best and then we were on the harder compound, that didn’t help,” said the Dutchman.

“I think the pace was quite good but around here once you close up you can’t really pass. But it’s ok.”

Earlier Saturday, after a lengthy stewards’ meeting, Hamilton was penalised after his Mercedes’ DRS system (the flap mounted on the rear wing of the car which opens to gain top speed) was judged to have exceeded allowed limits.

“The team will not be appeal-ing Lewis’ disqualification from Quali. We want to win these World Championships on the race track,” tweeted Mercedes.

France and Belgium qualify for 2022 World Cup finalsAFP | Paris

World champions France booked their place at

next year’s World Cup in Qatar in style as Kylian Mbappe fired in four goals in an 8-0 thrashing of Kazakhstan at the Parc des Princes on Saturday.

Karim Benzema scored twice and there were further goals for Adrien Rabiot and An-toine Griezmann whose pen-alty marked his 42nd goal for France, taking him ahead of Michel Platini.

Only Thierry Henry (51) and Olivier Giroud (46) have scored more for France.

The French will be joined at the finals by neighbours Bel-gium as the world’s top-ranked team saw off Estonia 3-1 in Brussels to ensure top spot in Group E ahead of Gareth Bale’s Wales who beat Belarus 5-1 in Cardiff.

The Netherlands, who missed out on the 2018 World Cup, looked on course to join them as they led Montenegro 2-0 going into the last 10 minutes of their encounter in Podgorica.

However, the Dutch conced-ed two goals in the last 10 min-utes to draw 2-2. They still top Group G but are just two points ahead of Turkey and Norway who they host in Rotterdam on Tuesday.

On the sixth anniversary of the 2015 attacks in Paris which claimed the lives of 130 people, France put on a spectacular show for their supporters.

Mbappe set the ball rolling

when he put the world champi-ons ahead after just six minutes. The Paris Saint-Germain star added a second six minutes lat-er and completed his hat-trick with a thundering header just after the half-hour.

Leading 3-0 at the break, France turned up the heat even more in the second half as Ben-zema struck twice before Rabi-ot and Griezmann had their moments in the spotlight.

It was fitting that Mbappe had the final say, stroking home

his fourth to complete the rout three minutes from time.

France top Group D, leaving Finland and Ukraine to scrap over second place.

Belgium had dropped just a single point in qualifying up to this point and knew that vic-tory over Estonia in Brussels would guarantee them top spot in Group E.

Christian Benteke settled any nerves when he put them ahead after just 11 minutes.

Yannick Carrasco doubled the lead eight minutes into the second half and although Erik Sorga pulled one back for the visitors, Thorgan Hazard put the game to bed shortly after.

That win meant that Wales, who had already secured a place in the play-offs, would not be able to catch them.

The Welsh, however, boost-ed by the presence of Bale in attack, produced their own im-pressive show.

Bagnaia wins Valencia Grand Prix, Rossi 10th in final race

Reuters | Valencia

Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia claimed his fourth win in

the last six MotoGP races at the season-ending Valencia Grand Prix yesterday as his mentor and nine-times world cham-pion Valentino Rossi finished 10th in his final race.

Pramac Racing’s Spanish rookie Jorge Martin made a strong start from pole position and held off a pack of challeng-ers but was denied a second victory of the season after be-ing overtaken by Bagnaia with 13 laps left.

“This race victory is a pres-ent to Valentino,” Bagnaia, a product of Rossi’s VR46 riders academy, said.

“I want to dedicate this race to him and thank him for what he has done for us at the acad-emy. Before this weekend, I didn’t think it was possible (to win)... but we arrived here as one of the fastest teams. It’s the best way to finish.”

Jack Miller finished third to secure the team champi-onship for Ducati, while 2020 world champion Joan Mir of Spain missed out on a podium

position after surging forward following a crash by Suzuki team mate Alex Rins midway through the race.

Yamaha’s new world cham-pion Fabio Quartararo finished fifth.

Seven-times MotoGP title winner Rossi, one of the great-est and most charismatic of motorcycling champions, de-lighted fans including Brazil-ian soccer great Ronaldo with a few quick laps but was una-ble to add to his 199 premier class podiums.

The 42-year-old Italian, nicknamed “The Doctor”, is considering a move into car racingafter more than two decades in Grand Prix motor-cycling.

Bahrain’s Kalkidan Gezahegne wins 10K race in Spain

• Tokyo Olympics silver-medallist finishes first in women’s race while also coming an impressive fourth overall amongst over 1,500 runners

TDT | Manama

Bahrain’s Tokyo Olympics silver-medallist Kalkidan

Gezahegne won the women’s race yesterday in the XLIV Car-reira Pedestre Pupular do San Martino in Spain.

Kalkidan completed the 10K run in 30 minutes 23 seconds as she narrowly missed out on the overall podium, being the fourth-best finisher amongst more than a whopping 1,500 participants.

The 30-year-old Bahraini was well ahead of the rest of the women’s field, with Span-iards Joselyn Brea Abreu and Ester Navarrete Santana com-ing a distant second and third in 34:32 and 34:45, respective-ly.

Kalkidan’s time was just over half-a-minute slower than the

10K road race World Record, which she herself set just last month at The Giants Geneva race in Switzerland.

Her run yesterday was her first competition since then, and only her second since win-ning the silver medal in the women’s 10,000m on track at the Tokyo Olympic Games ear-lier this year.

NBA title-winning Bahrain head coach Sam Vincent has named 14 players on the senior men’s national team

that will be preparing for the start of the Asian qualification competition for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

The squad is set to leave today for Jeddah for an overseas training camp until No-vember 20, where they will also play two friendly games against the Saudi Arabian national team.

The Bahrainis are scheduled to begin their qualifying bid in Group D on No-vember 26 against Iran in Tehran, before facing off with the Iranians once again on November 29 at the Khalifa Sports City arena in Isa Town.

The other teams in their group are Syria and Kazakhstan.

The players named on the team include Mohammed Qurban, Maitham Jameel, Hesham Sarhan, Mohammed Kuwayed and Subah Hussain from defending back-to-back league champions Al Ahli; Moham-med Hussain, Mohammed Ameer, Ahmed Salman and Nader Shaker from Manama; CJ Giles, Mohammed Buallay and Ali Jaber from Al Najma; and Ali Shukrallah and Ali

Rabea from Muharraq. The nationals will be missing young star

Muzamil Ameer for the upcoming two games, which are a part of the first window of qualification. Muzamil is currently in the U.S. where he is a student-athlete currently playing with Utah State University in Divi-sion I basketball under the National Colle-giate Athletic Association (NCAA) banner.

Bahrain’s next two fixtures will be in the second window, scheduled for next year. Their third game is against Syria on Febru-ary 24 and then they go against Kazakhstan on February 27.

The final window in July of 2022 will include their last two games of the first round, against Syria on July 1 and Kazakh-stan on July 4.

For this first round of qualifiers, 16 teams from Asia/Oceania are divided into four groups of four teams to play in home-and-away games. The three best-placed teams

from each group will advance to the second round.

There, the 12 remaining nations will be divided into two groups of six. Each team will face teams from another group. Results from the first round will be carried. The top three teams from each group, along with World Cup co-hosts Japan and the Philippines, will qualify.

However, if the third co-hosts Indonesia manage to qualify as hosts by making the quarterfinals of the next FIBA Asia Cup, only the top two teams from each group, along with the best third-place team, will qualify.

The qualifiers, which also feature compe-tition in Africa, the Americas and Europe, are set to determine a 32-nation field for the tournament finals. Eighty teams in all are participating in World Cup qualifying.

The qualification process will include six windows over 15 months. Bahrain earned their place in the qualifiers after secur-ing their berth in the FIBA Asia Cup. The Bahrainis have yet to compete in the FIBA World Cup.

Badosa beats Sakkari to move into WTA Finals semisAFP | Mexico City

Spain’s Paula Badosa fired 10 aces in a 7-6 (7/4), 6-4

round-robin victory over Ma-ria Sakkari on Saturday (Nov 13), remaining unbeaten in the season-ending WTA Finals.

Badosa, whose late season run of form included her big-gest title to date at the pan-demic-delayed hardcourt tournament in Indian Wells, California, in October, had already posted a convincing victory over tournament top seed Aryna Sabalenka to open group play.

With her second victory she appeared on track to reach the knockout phase as one of the top two on her four-woman group, but she had to await the result of the night match between Iga Swiatek and Sa-balenka to see if she would be assured of a semi-final spot before playing her third round-robin match.

The elite eight-player event was moved to Guadalajara from Shenzhen, China, this year because of the coronavi-rus pandemic.

World number one Ashleigh

Barty of Australia is not de-fending her title because of continuing pandemic travel restrictions.

Saturday’s clash between Badosa and Sakkari, the first Greek to qualify for the Finals, was the first meeting between the two.
