Welcome to your 2015-2016 curriculum guide! Please understand that it is very important that

you choose classes for the upcoming year that will not only interest you, but that will challenge

you as well. Make sure that you read through the curriculum guide, and if you follow these five

steps, it will help ensure that you are in the correct classes and that you have an outstanding

2015-2016 school year.

1. Review your graduation requirements.

2. Consider your plans past graduation.

3. Choose your core classes (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies).

4. Choose your electives (check all prerequisites).

5. Review your choices with your parents/guardians and teachers.

6. Turn in your class pick sheet to your guidance counselor.

Schedule Change Policy

Once the school year begins, changes to class selections are made only for the following valid

reasons: computer error, failing a required class, passing a class in summer school, lacking a

graduation requirement, or lacking an appropriate prerequisite. All schedule changes must be

approved by an Administrator and Guidance Counselor.

Please understand that classes or lunch placement are NOT changed for teacher or social pref-

erence. Any request for these reasons will be denied. Also, failure to complete your summer

reading does not constitute a valid reason for a class change.

On the following pages, you will find information specific to your graduation year. Think about

the year that you will graduate from Celebration High School. This year is classified as your

―cohort year. Every cohort year has different requirements to graduate, so make sure that

you follow your cohort year information.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are recommended for outstanding students. These courses are very chal-

lenging and are taught on a college level. There are extensive outside assignments and reading involved in

these courses. At the end of the course a standardized exam is taken on a national test day for each course.

Students who earn a 3 or better on the test can earn college credit for the course. Each college has a unique

acceptance policy for AP credits so it is strongly recommended that you review the policy for the college

you wish to attend. Below is recommended course of study prepared by the county curriculum department.

All AFJROTC courses require the student to wear the uniform once a week to all classes, with the exception of 1st year cadets. In addition, the student is required to meet USAF grooming standards as they relate to hair, jewelry, earrings, facial hair, etc. Prospective students should make certain they know these requirements prior to enrollment. Failure to wear the uniform or meet grooming standards will result in failure of the course. Note: Additional content will be covered so that the curriculum for this course is 40% Aerospace Science, 40% leadership, and 20% wellness. Two years of AFJROTC will meet the graduation requirement for HOPE and a PRACTICAL ART.

Aerospace Science

This course is an aviation history course focusing on the devel-opment of flight through the centuries. It starts with ancient civi-lizations, then progresses through time to modern day. The emphasis is on civilian and military contributions to aviation; the development, modernizations, and transformation of the Air Force; and a brief astronomical and space exploration history. It is interspersed with concise overviews of the principals of flight to include basic aeronautics, aircraft motion and control, flight power, and rockets. Students also develop citizenship, character, wellness, health and fitness. Students practice basic drill techniques and conduct military ceremonies.

Aerospace Science

This course provides increased international awareness and in-sight into foreign affairs that permits a more educated under-standing of other cultures and enhanced knowledge of Ameri-ca’s interests and role in the world. Geopolitical issues such as terrorism, economics, politics, military issues, human rights and other cultural issues will be examined. The regional areas in-cluded in this course are Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, Africa, and Latin America. An option for the second year students is to acquaint them with the aerospace environ-ment, the human requirements of flight, principles of aircraft flight and navigation. Students will also develop effective com-munication skills, the understanding of human and group behav-ior, and basic leadership concepts. Student practice drill move-ments and observe military customs and ceremonies.

Aerospace Science The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop knowledge of the space environment, space programs and tech-nology, and manned space flight. An in-depth study of the So-lar System, the terrestrial planets and the outer planets is cov-ered as well. Students will also develop knowledge and skills related to planning for postsecondary education or employ-ment, finical planning, and career opportunities. Students polish their skills in marching and conducting military ceremonies.

Aerospace Science

The purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of the United States Air Force. It discusses the National Security S t ra tegy and g i v e s a b r i e f h i s t o ry o f t h e military. The policies of former administration are discussed. It covers the defense structure of the United States to include descrip-tions of the objectives, mission, and organization of the Armed Forces. This course will guide students to an understanding of the fundamentals of management, managing yourself and others. Emphasis is placed on allowing the student to see himself/herself as a manager. Attentions to the four building blocks of leader-ship are considered. The four areas are: Management Tech-niques, Managements Decisions, Management Functions, & Man-aging Self and Others.

Dance Techniques The purpose of this course is to learn foundational skills in two or more dance styles. Development of fundamental dance technique is enriched and enlivened through study of works by a variety of di-verse artists, developing genre-specific movement vocabulary and dance terminology, and building knowledge and skills related to somatic practices, dance composition, analysis of effort and out-comes, dance history and culture, collaborative work, and rehearsal and performance protocols.

Dance Techniques The purpose of this course is to build on previously acquired knowledge and fundamental technical skills in two or more dance forms, focusing on developing the aesthetic quality of movement in the ensemble and as an individual.

Debate I The purpose of this course is to develop students’ beginning aware-ness, understanding, and application of language arts as it applies to oral communication concepts and strategies for public debate in a variety of given settings.

Theatre The purpose of this course is to promote enjoyment appreciation for all aspects of theatre. Classwork focuses on the exploration of theatre literature, performance, historical and cultur-al connections, and technical requirements. Improvisation, creative dramatics, and beginning scene work are used to introduce stu-dents to acting and character development.

0400700 Music Theatre 1

Students' course work focuses on, but is not limited to, acting, vocal performance, dance, non-dance movement, and staging, which trans-fer readily to performances in musicals and other venues. Students survey the evolution of music in theatre from ancient Greece to mod-ern Broadway through a humanities approach and representative literature. Music theatre students explore the unique staging and tech-nical demands of musicals in contrast to non-musical plays. Public per-formances may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals. Students may be required to attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom.

Theatre 3 Honors - Off Book

The purpose of this course is promote depth of engagement and lifelong appreciation f o r theatre through a broad spectrum of teacher-assigned and self- directed study and performance. Stu-dents regularly reflect on aesthetics and issues related to and ad-dressed through theatre, and create within various aspects of theatre in ways that are progressively more innovative.

Theatre 4 Honors - Off Book The purpose of this course is to promote significant

Students assemble a portfolio that showcases a significant body of work representing personal vision and artistic growth over time; mastery of theatre skills and techniques in one or more areas; and evidence of sophisticated oral and written analytical and prob-lem-solving skills based on their structural, historical, and cultural knowledge.

Technical Theatre: Design &

The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop fundamental skills in stagecraft and apply them through practical experiences. The content includes, but is not limited to: safety issues and regulations; theatre terminology; elements of technical theatre; trends in technical design; relationship between script and directorial concepts; properties; costumes and makeup; light-ing and sound; artistic discipline; careers; and connections be-tween stagecraft and other subject areas.

The purpose of this course is to provide students with practical experience in stagecraft procedures. The content includes, but is not limited to: the study of scenery construction and set design; methods and procedures for sound; lighting; costuming; proper-ties; and make-up in theatrical productions.

Developmental Language Arts through ESOL The purpose of this course is to provide students who are native speakers of languages other than English instruction enabling stu-dents to accelerate the development of reading, writing, listening, speaking and language skills and to strengthen these skills so they are able to successfully read and comprehend grade level text independently. Instruction emphasizes reading comprehension and vocabulary through the use of a variety of literary and informa-tional texts encompassing a broad range of text structures, gen-res, and levels of complexity. Texts used for instruction focus on a wide range of topics, including content-area information, in order to support students in meeting the knowledge demands of increas-ingly complex text.

English English 1 lays the foundation for the development and under-standing of fluent language. The first semester of this course will focus on student writing and students will have writing home-work assignments. Students will be introduced to research meth-ods and will be expected to demonstrate mastery of these meth-ods through written papers. Students will practice silent and oral reading for fluency. Students will gain practice in identifying theme, topic, main idea and supporting details. Students will have reading homework assignments.

English I

This course requires teacher recommendation (based on strong reading and writing skills). This is a fast paced, intense course in which students develop the foundation for reading and writ-ing the English language. The first semester of this course will focus on student writing. Students will be introduced to research methods and will be expected to demonstrate mastery of these methods through written papers. Students who take this course should be self-motivated, ready for daily homework, and excited about enjoying intellectual pursuits in reading and writing.

English I through

The purpose of this course is to provide instruction in skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in English to students with a primary language other than English. Meets graduation requirement for English.

English Students study a variety of themes in world

including literary and artistic heritages that have shaped the mod-ern world. Students expand their proficiency in writing in a varie-ty of formats, use inquiry as a method of study and questioning, conduct research, and increase their ability to work collaborative-ly. It is recommended that students take World History at the same time.

Grade: 10 Credit:

English 2 This course requires teacher recommendation based on strong

reading and writing skills. This is a high paced, challenging

course in which students study world literature and non-fiction in

its context throughout time. In depth analysis of texts through

discussion and writing is the focal point, but the course also

includes building and polishing skills in listening and viewing.

Students will analyze authors’ use of rhetoric, writing strate-

gies, and literary devices in order to incorporate them into

their own writing. Students who take this course should be moti-

vated, prepared for daily homework, and enjoy intellectual

pursuits. It is recommended that students take World History at

the same time.

This course uses literature, history, the arts and media to explore

the development of literary thought and literary genre in Ameri-

ca. Students will study the literary and artistic heritage that has

shaped our society and will expand their proficiency in writing in

a variety of formats, use inquiry as a method of study and ques-

tioning, conduct research, and increase their ability to work col-

laboratively. It is recommended that students take American Histo-

ry at the same time.

English 3

This course requires teacher recommendation (based on strong reading and writing skills). This is a high paced, intense course in which students study American prose and literature. This course uses literature, American history, the arts and media to explore the development of literary thought in America. Students will study the literary and artistic heritage that has shaped the American society from the Native American through contemporary authors. It is recommended that stu-dents take American History at the same time. Students will ex-pand their proficiency a s writers as this is a corner-stone of the class. Students who take this course should be self-motivated, ready for daily homework, and enjoy intellectual pursuits in reading and writing.

English English IV is British literature, with a focus on prose & poetry from Beowulf to the present time. Reading, analyzing, speaking and writing will help students hone their skills as well as in-crease their knowledge of the diversity of literature in the Eng-lish language.

English 4: Florida College

This c o u r s e incorporates reading and writing study through writing a variety of informative text using grade- level writing craft and through the in-depth reading and analysis of informa-tional selections in order to develop critical reading and writ-ing skills necessary for success in college courses. This course pre-pares students for successful completion of Florida college English courses.

English 4

This course requires teacher recommendation (based strong reading and writing skills). This is a high paced, intense course in which students study British nonf iction and fiction. English IV honors focuses on British Literature; however, it is also a prepa-ration for Freshmen Composition in college. Students will analyze literature in order to see the relationship between universal themes and the development of the English language. The course will emphasize reading, written literary analysis, vocabulary development, in-class discussions and oral presentations, in-class writing and time management and organization.

English 4 through

The purpose of this course is to provide instruction in the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in English to students with a primary language other than English. Meets graduation requirement for English.

Grade: 12 Credit:

AP English Language and Composition

Advanced Placement English Language and Composition is

offered in place of English III Honors to students who have

excelled in English II Honors. The focus of this course is on the

analysis of writing strategies, language, and rhetoric in a vari-

ety of nonfiction texts throughout time. It will also include the

analysis of strategies, language, and rhetoric used in v isua l

and auditory media, such as advertisements, documentaries,

and speeches. Students will learn to incorporate these strate-

gies in a variety of self-produced texts, specifically timed es-

says. This course is comparable to Freshmen Composition at

the college level and, therefore, includes challenging

summer assignments, c r i t i c a l reading, analytical writing, and

ample daily homework. Success on the AP exam may result

in college credit (determined by the college or university).

AP English Literature and

The AP English Literature and Composition Course Description s t a t e s t h a t the material in the course “engages stu-dents in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature.” Students learn to attend carefully to the works read and this close reading is described in the AP Literature and Composition Course Description as reading for “the experience of literature, the interpretation of literature and the evaluation of literature.” The works read are selected from drama, poetry, fiction and nonfiction written during the sixteenth to t h e twen -t y -first century . The f o c u s i s o n B r i t i s h literature with some attention to world literature. Writing is an important com-ponent of this course and students will learn to write analytically. This course is taken instead of English 4 honors. Success on the AP exam may result in college credit (determined by the col-lege or university).

The department of mathematics recommends that all have access to a graphing calculator for use in class and home.

Algebra

The purpose of this course is to formalize and extend the mathe-matics that students learned in the middle grades. The critical are-as, called units, deepen and extend understanding of linear and exponential relationships by contrasting them with each other and by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend, and students engage in methods for analyzing, solving, and using quadratic functions. The Standards for Mathematical Practice ap-ply throughout each course and, together with the content stand-ards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coher-ent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

Algebra

The purpose of this course is to complete the study of Algebra I begun in Algebra IA. The content will include: polynomials, factor-ing, and quadratic equations. The course also includes instruction in the proper use of the graphing calculator. Students who success-fully complete this course and Algebra IA will be prepared for more advanced mathematics including Algebra II and will meet the Algebra I requirement for graduation.

Algebra

The purpose of this course is to develop algebraic concepts and processes that can be used to solve a variety of real world and mathematical problems. The content will include: structure and properties of the real number system, first-degree equa-tions and inequalities, relations and functions, systems of linear equations and inequalities, polynomials, factoring, and quadrat-ic equations. The course also includes instruction on proper use of graphing calculators. This course will provide a solid foun-dation for the study of more advanced mathematics.

Algebra I

More in-depth work in this honors course will prepare students for more advanced mathematics courses. The course features integrated use of the graphing calculator to develop an under-standing of the concepts behind mathematics and to prepare students for the highly graphical nature of higher-level mathe-matical analyses. The content will include: exponents, order of operations, data analysis, first-degree equations and inequali-ties, polynomials, factoring, quadratic equations, and operations with radicals. This course will provide a solid foundation for the study of more advanced mathematics.

Grade: 9 Credit:

The purpose of this course is to develop the geometric relation-ships and deductive strategies that can be used to solve a variety of real-world and mathematical problems. The

content will include: point, line and plane characteristics; angles and lines; reflections; polygons; trans-formations and congru-ence; measurements; three-dimensional figures; surface area and volume; similarity; and circles. This course will provide knowledge and skills for the study of more advanced mathemat-ics.

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a program designed to prepare students in the aca-demic

middle for four-year college. The AVID curriculum, based on rigorous standards, was developed by middle

and senior high school teachers in collaboration with college professors. It is driven by the WICR method, which

stands for writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading. AVID targets students in the aca-demic middle — B, C,

and even D students — who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are stu-

dents who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. Typically, they

will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families. AVID

pulls these students out of their unchallenging courses and puts them on the college track: acceleration instead

of remediation.

CAREER PATHWAYS

In the Osceola School District, Career Pathways is designed to provide students a seamless pathway from middle school, through high school, and into post-secondary education. Post-secondary education might include

university, technical school, community college, or apprenticeship. A Career Pathway prepares students for suc-cess in each of these options; the correct option after high school is best determined by the student’s career plans.

Students begin their middle school years with introductory and exploratory classes in careers. Once in high school,

students can continue in classes and programs that provide specific training toward a desired career.

These programs prepare students to enter the appropriate college, technical institute, or entry level job in their chosen

career, often with a recognized industry certification and/or a Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars

Award.

In addition, students who complete a Career Pathway program develop the employ-

ability and technical skills required by employers in today’s globally

competitive marketplace.

Celebration High School provides a wide variety of Career Pathways (Career and Technical

Education or CTE) programs for students. Many programs offer special benefits to students.

CAREER ACADEMIES

A Career Academy is a small learning community within a high school that provides rigorous and relevant

instruction focused on preparation for both the workplace and college. It goes beyond traditional Career and

Technical Education to integrate academic and technical curricula, raise student ambitions, increase career op-

tions, and provide a meaningful learning context for all students.

Academies combine a college-preparatory curriculum with a career theme. Academic courses are linked with technical

courses that focus on the academy’s field of work.

A Career Academy is comprised of a cluster of students who have some of the same teach-

ers for at least two years, and who share several classes each year. Career Academies partner with local businesses and help provide work-based

experiences for Academy students.

POST- SECONDARY ARTICULATION

Many Career Pathway courses and programs provide students the opportunity to gain free college credit from

Valencia Community College or free course acceleration from the Technical Education Center of Osceola

(TECO). Some courses can also gain the student free college credit from other state colleges.

The Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomedical Sciences Program is a sequence of four courses which follows the

PLTW Engineering Program’s proven hands-on, real world problem-solving approach to learning. Students ex-

plore the concepts of human medicine and are introduced to bioinformatics, including mapping and analyzing

DNA. Through activities, like dissecting a heart, students examine the processes, structures, and interactions of

the human body – often playing the role of biomedical professionals to solve mysteries. Think CSI meets ER.

They also explore the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease by working collaboratively to conduct inves-

tigation.

The PLTW program is designed to serve high school students of diverse backgrounds, helping them all to become

college and career ready, from those already interested in STEM-related fields to those who are more inspired by
