INCOMING PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Magical, that is the one word that sums up our 125th anniversary celebration. Our hats are off to the MacDonalds and Hoffmans who chaired the event as well as the entire celebration committee. The food and entertainment were top-notch and Lindy and his team attended to every detail making the evening spectacular. It definitely was a great way to start off for your new Board of Managers. We are committed to continuing the celebration throughout the balance of the year. We have a proud heritage and a bright future. As private clubs are struggling throughout our nation, we at the Saginaw Club have remained financially viable and relatively stable from a membership perspective. With that said, the lifeblood of every club is members. Over the past few years, our numbers have remained the same. Our goal is to drive new members. The way that we can accomplish this is by keeping the club vibrant, offering fine cuisine and fun social events. Over the next year, we encourage you to bring your friends to the club and share with them the many amenities we have to offer. Collectively, we can all grow the club one new member at a time. Please join us in this endeavor. I look forward to serving as your president and please feel free at any time to reach out to me and let me know what you’re thinking! All the best, Jim Carpp

ANNUAL MEETING REPORT Review of the 125th Annual Meeting Wednesday, April 16, 2014
President Tim Royle called the meeting to order and determined a quorum to be present. A warm welcome was extended to everyone in attendance. Upon a motion from the floor, reading of the 2013 Annual Meeting Minutes was waived. Members elected to three year terms on the Board were announced: Tim Hausbeck, Jack Provenzano and Dr. Don Sabourin. The winners were congratulated and all candidates were thanked for their participation. A moment of silence was observed for those deceased over the past year: James Garrett and Mrs. James Hayes. Jack Rehmann and John Bintz were recognized for again serving as judges of the election. Financial results for the prior year were reviewed. • The year-end net loss was reduced from (31,900) to (26,100). • Cash flow is stable. • The club mortgage balance was $238,000 for a $40,000 reduction and 5 years
remaining on the amortization schedule. A cash budget is in place for the coming year with no significant increase in dues or capital assessments. The club has realized good results in controlling expenses. The Endowment Fund ending balance on February 28, 2014, was $231,092 with a balance of $295,000 after appreciation. Total membership count at year end was 272: two less than last year at this time. The membership structure which contained many classes has been simplified. Also, an incentivized Resident membership program has been introduced. A brief report of future plans includes efforts to grow the membership and retain present members. Develop a five year strategic plan for capital improvement and a continued commitment to reduction of long term debt. President Royle then thanked the Board of Managers, club staff and especially the membership who make it all possible. Following some discussion from the floor the meeting adjourned at 7:30pm.
MANAGER’S MESSAGE Club Activity – It’s been an incredible month for your club beginning with the Rotary Club’s Saginaw on Stage, followed by Easter Sunday, the 125th Anniversary Party and Mother’s Day. In addition to the big events, regular business has been very good. For the 125th party, the hours of planning, attention to every detail, insistence on
quality and participation by the committee, chaired by the MacDonalds, was absolutely outstanding. We should be proud! It was fun sharing the committee’s enthusiasm and working with them.
Summer Operations – The Memorial Day weekend marks the transition into summer operations. These are the changes which help to control expenses and adjust to reduced business activity.
• Bistro service moves from Fridays to Thursdays with entertainment discontinued until fall.
• Dinner service on the second floor is suspended until fall.
• Some staff members go to voluntary layoff for varying lengths of time.
• Club closes June 28th-August 3rd for vacations, housekeeping and maintenance with all employees going to layoff.
• No change to lunch or Members’ Bar schedule except for club closing in July.
Dress Code Reminder – House Rules outline casual and business attire for the first and second floors. At a recent holiday brunch some guests attended in flip flops, shorts and tee shirts on the second floor – violating the dress codes and more importantly the dignity of the club. Other members, dressed more appropriately, said it was embarrassing to guests in their party.
