Yet again, God does immeasurably more than we ask or imagine

Southwest Louisville has a new friend and neighbor and we are so excited to open our new church home to folks in that area of the city.

Once again, we are elated that the Lord has given us more people than we ever dreamed.

This has become a wonderful pattern at our new campuses and one we hope to repeat every single time we extend our reach into Kentuckiana.

This campus is very welcoming. You can see it in the hugs and the smiles as people greet one another.

The excitement is contagious. It’s just a joy to be there. Although there have been a few challenges that come with large crowds, we’ve been able to adjust, and things are already running smoothly. The Southwest staff has done an out-standing job.

There are so many unchurched folks in this part of the city and this is an amazing opportunity to really make a huge difference. The lives of many can be changed for all eternity. We’ve been thrilled with how many unchurched have been coming. God is blessing abundantly.

I’m so proud of James Hauser and how the folks are responding to his lead-ership. We’ve had baptisms every week, along with folks coming forward for

membership. The Southwest staff has already heard tons of God stories and are just on fire to see what our Lord will do next. Our mission is to connect people to Jesus and one another!

Continue to pray for the Southwest Campus and all God will do through the lives of folks there. There are so many stories that are being written…all for HIS glory. We’d love for you to consider get-ting involved in many areas, especially

for help with our kids and students. And please pray the Southwest Campus will continue to grow and bless others while being challenged by God’s Word.

“Now to him who is able to do immea-surably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church, and in Christ Jesus throughout all gen-erations, forever and ever. Amen” (Ephe-sians 3:20-21).

James Hauser passionate about serving Southwest LouisvilleBy Ruth ScheNk | [email protected]

Southeast Christian Church’s South-

west Campus Pastor James Hauser has a long history at Southeast. He served as the high school pastor at the Blanken-baker Campus from 2005-2012. The son of a recently retired pastor, Hauser also served as the pastor at Ozark Christian Church in Monett, Mo., and youth pastor at First Christian Church in Salem, Ill.

Hauser is excited about the oppor-tunity to reach many who do not attend church in the area of 90,000 homes with more than 200,000 who do not attend church.

DiD you alwayS waNt to Be a paStoR?I went through different shifts in high

school, but basically thought I would be a math teacher and coach. I loved foot-ball and math. I thought I could do that, and with summers off, be the best volun-teer on the planet. While I was growing up, I saw that my dad was always dying for volunteers.

So I had a plan, but my dad said all of us had to go to one year of Bible college, then do what we wanted. So I went to Missouri Southern State University at the same time I went to Ozark Christian College.

I did not want to attend Ozark or any Bible college but did in order to honor my parents. My attitude at school reflected my lack of desire to be there.

what chaNgeD youR miND?A friend of my dad asked if I would do

weekend ministry at a small church of about 25 people. I explained that I wasn’t going to be a pastor, but he said, “If you

don’t fill out this application, I’ll make you miserable.”

I wrote a letter explaining why I would be the worst candidate possible: I didn’t like speaking in front of people. I didn’t want to work in the church and so on. They read my application and said, “We think you are the best candidate. We feel that we have been rejected, and we feel like you’re just one of us.”

I ended up in this itty-bitty church with just six people in the 20 to 30 age group. Two families had kids. It was awful and awesome at the same time. I don’t sing, but worship was so bad that I offered to lead worship. The lady who played the piano for us hadn’t played the piano in over 20 years.

In some ways, it was a nightmare church, and I loved it. The people were so real and encouraging. I got to a point where I knew this was where God was leading me. That itty-bitty church did so much for me, and I learned so much from them.

Later we merged with a church down the road and now that church has 150 to 200 there every week.

how DiD you meet youR wife leaNN?We met at a Christ In Youth camp my

senior year of high school, although she was not interested in me until college. Long before that, my dad had preached a revival at her church. When LeAnn’s mom heard that my dad had a son her daughter’s age, she said, “Bill Hauser’s son is a senior. Maybe you two will get married someday.”

James and LeAnn got married the summer of their sophomore year at

Ozark Christian College and have two sons, Caden, 10, and Bryson, 9.

how DiD you get to SoutheaSt?In 2004, I was a youth pastor in Illinois

when Southeast was looking for a high school pastor. My brother John did an internship at Southeast with then Youth Pastor Jim Burgen.

When Phil Heller, who was the high school pastor then, asked if I would be interested in coming to Southeast, I said I didn’t think so. Great things were hap-pening in Illinois, and I couldn’t imagine leaving.

They came back two weeks later and asked if I’d given it more thought.

I called my dad and brother John. They said I absolutely had to do it. I called Matt Proctor, now the president of Ozark Christian College. He said I should strongly consider the move.

So in January 2005, I joined the staff as one of the high school pastors. I’ve been part of an incredible team, which was hard to leave.

what DiD you leaRN aBout BeiNg a paStoR fRom youR DaD?

My dad is the biggest lover of people I’ve ever seen. He is a model of Christ in my life. When I thought he should knock out a few people, he’d hug them.

what woulD people Be SuRpRiSeD to kNow aBout you?

I love looking for a good deal. My wife is unbelievable with sales and coupons. We can make $40 stretch a long way.

what iNtRigueS you aBout a chuRch iN the Dixie highway coRRiDoR?

There is a large amount of people in a small amount of space.

I grew up in a blue-collar factory town. I appreciate people who work hard.

For me, I had to adjust to living in Louisville’s East End. I didn’t grow up like this.

One thing I’ve picked up from the other campus pastors is that God has exceeded expectations in both campuses.

Family: Wife, LeAnn; sons, Caden and BrysonWhere did you work before you joined the team at Southeast? I was a youth pastor in Salem, Illinois.  I then was on NextGen staff at the Blankenbaker Campus for eight years. What made you take this job? I knew God was leading me toward something different.  I still love students but knew my student ministry life was coming to an end.  I always knew I would eventually be a senior pastor or lead pastor somewhere.  When I came to visit the community and saw the potential here, I knew this is where I belonged.  Where is your hometown? Stephen Puricelli and his wife Beth come to the Southwest Campus from Central Illinois. From 2009-2013, the Puricellis were missionaries in Port-de-Paix, Haiti, where both taught in a Christian mission school. Beth taught first grade while Stephen taught high school math and Bible.

Stephen has a degree in math and can speak Creole, but his heartbeat is about people and building relationships.

Raised in a Christian home, he saw faith lived out at home and at church. Southwest Campus Pastor James Hauser was his youth minister at First Christian Church in Salem, Ill. They stayed in touch while Puricelli earned his degree at Eastern Illinois University and married Beth.

A year before the campus launched, Puricelli was already building small groups.

“Disciple-making is all about relationship,” he said. “When you’re in large group settings, the thing you miss is relationship. I’ve found that every relationship in life matters—if it’s a server at a restaurant, a doctor, a clerk, a teacher, a friend. And the relationships we build matter in the big and little things.”

Currently, the Puricellis are in the process of adopting from Haiti. They live near the Southwest Campus.

Proud Kitchen Supplier for the Southwest Campus!

Bernie Minnis joined the team as children’s pastor in February. He had served as a school counselor at Semple Elementary School near Churchill Downs. Prior to that, he was a teacher at Chancey Elementary School. He also served as a volunteer elementary small group leader, working with fourth-graders at Southeast’s Oldham Campus.

“When it came to children’s ministry, we really were asking the Lord to bring us someone who had a great understanding of kids,” Hauser said. “When Bernie applied for a position for Blankenbaker, the leadership came back saying this guy would be a better fit to lead an entire ministry. After meeting Bernie and hearing his heart we decided this is the guy. He taught in the school system for six years and was a school counselor for six years. The school he was teaching at is in the area that the Southwest campus will draw from. It was like God had dropped the perfect person in our lap.” Family: Wife, Sarah, and three children: Tripp, Micah and AdleighWhere did you work before you joined the team at Southeast? Jennifer had been working in a pediatrician’s office for six years when she applied to be the administrative assistant for NextGen and Children’s Ministry at the Southwest Campus.

For the last year, she’d been attending the Indiana Campus on Saturday nights and her home church on Sunday mornings. She’d been raised in a Christian home and baptized young.

She prayed long and hard about joining the team at the Southwest Campus.

“I prayed about this before I submitted my application,” she said. “I believe God put me here for a reason. I love the team aspect of serving here, and Iove being able to serve this community and bring people to Christ.” After all those years of working in a pediatrician’s office, she’s pretty sure she’s immune to everything and won’t use many sick days. Jennifer had been leading children’s ministry for 15 years at other churches when she knew God was taking her in a new and different direction.

She grew up in Fairdale, married Chris, her high school sweetheart, and raised a daughter, Sarah, who now is a junior at Asbury College and Seminary.

A friend told her about an opening at the Southwest Campus.“I love First Impressions,” Jennifer said. “I love getting to know

Matt Erxleben began to get serious about his faith in high school. As he became fired up about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, he began to bring friends in his circle of influence to Christ through skateboarding at the church.

Erxleben went on to St. Louis Christian College. In 2009, at age 21, he followed in the footsteps of his mentor, James Hauser, as he was named student minister at First Capital Christian Church in Corydon, Ind. He joined the Southwest Campus staff in August.

“There are a lot of unchurched people (in Southwest Louisville), which excites me, and it’s why I’m here,” he said. “It’s my heartbeat. We are going to find some core adult leaders and we are going to start reaching these kids and their families.”

Rachael Sibcy worked in the corporate world as a technical writer and knew the Lord was leading her to something new.

She left her job, became a substitute teacher and began working in women’s and children’s ministry in the church her father planted in Lebanon, Ohio, outside Cincinnati.

She wanted to serve in Africa or Haiti but those doors closed. From her first interview, Rachael knew Southeast was the

place for her. She loves the Southwest community. “I talk with so many who have never read the Bible or

understand what a verse is,” she said. “My favorite part of my job is teaching those basics to younger children.”Family: Just me in Louisville. Olivia Maguire is a seasoned veteran of church plants and ministry. She joined the staff at Southeast in 2001 to work with volunteers. In 2011, she was on the team that launched the Oldham Campus. Each one on the launch team became like family when God nudged her yet again. At the time, she wasn’t sure what that meant to everyday life and ministry. She was one of the first hired for the Southwest team to serve as James Hauser’s administrative assistant.

She and her husband Patrick have three girls: Lydia, Maire, and Alaina. Olivia also leads a small group of eighth-grade girls in NextGen Ministry.

“I love being here,” she said. “I love this community. People want to see God work. They seek truth and want change. Very few hide. a history of the independent christian church movementBy Ruth ScheNk | [email protected]

Independent Christian churches go way back to 1901 when some 20,000 people walked, drove their wagons or rode horses to a camp meeting revival near Paris, Ky. It’s not hard to picture the crowds of early settlers, horses and wagons in the fields surrounding a rustic church building.

They gathered around cooking fires and lit torches for evening services. Crowds were a mix-ture of ordinary people—rich, poor, black and white, slaves and free, educated and illiterate from all denominations. They traveled to hear the preaching of Barton Warren Stone, who pleaded with people to just follow Jesus and live according to the Bible instead of a denomination.

Preaching continued for several days, and in those simple, outdoor meetings, something spec-tacular happened. More than 3,000 people decided to follow Christ and were baptized.

Denominational barriers crumbled as people decided to just be Christians and meet together in churches that follow the New Testament. It was the beginning of the Independent Christian Church, which focuses on Christ-centered, Bible-based teaching rather than creeds or denomina-tional rules.

“We are not only Christians, but Christians only,” leaders of the movement said. They rejected creeds and denominational names, believing that caused division in the body of Christ.

“Where the Bible speaks, we will speak,” they said. “And where the Bible is silent, we will be silent.”

Christian churches believe that the Bible gives clear directives for expressing faith, that it is through grace that we are saved, that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (John 3:16) and that God raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 10:9). We believe that people must believe, repent, confess and be baptized.

After those early camp meetings, Christian

churches sprouted up all across the Midwest, South and West. As pioneers who traveled to new parts of the country, they also planted churches.

And they continued to grow. According to 2009 statistics from The Directory

of Ministry, there are more than 400 Independent Christian Church congregations in Kentucky and 600 in Indiana. Across the United States, there are 5,327 Independent Christian Churches with 1,256,950 members.
