Introduction

Welcome to Charlestown High School and the tradition, pride, and

excitement of Charlestown Pirate Football. The Pirate Football 2014

program begins a new coaching era while honoring the 25th Anniversary

of a team that will never be forgotten in the hearts of Pirate Nation….the

1989 Pirate Football MSC, Sectional and Regional Championship team.

The Pirates welcome new head coach Darin Ward, who takes the helm

with 17 years of high school coaching experience and a 62-28 head

coaching record over eight years. Coach Ward’s attraction to Pirate

Nation, in part; is the tradition and work ethic of a community and

program with a love and rich tradition of football. Coach Ward, known in

the Mid-Southern Conference as a “Defensive Mastermind”; will assume

the program’s Defensive Coordinator duties, along-side a staff which includes six returning assistant coaches.

The Pirate Football tradition began with Junior Varsity play in 1971, finishing with a record of 5 wins and 4 loses,

including a 40-0 victory over Paoli in the season and program opener. Pirate Football graduated to Varsity

Football competition the following year (1972) and posted a 1-8 record, but winning the first varsity game 6-0 over

Springs Valley. The Pirates posted their first Varsity winning season in 1974, finishing 6-4; then followed it up

with the Pirates’ first Football Mid-Southern Conference Championship in 1975. The Pirates won their first

Football Sectional championship in 1989, the biggest season to date for the program; going undefeated in the

regular season, defeating #1 Evansville Memorial to claim the Sectional title, then defeating Greensburg for a

Regional Championship. The Pirates (#4 in Class 3A) then lost to Indianapolis Roncalli (the defending state

champions) on Dutch Reis Field in the semi-state round. Since 1989, the Pirates have won four more Football

Sectional Championships (1993, 1996, 2012 & 2014), with the most notable being in 2012, when the 3A top

offense finished 12-1 under the leadership of All-Star MVP Aaron Daniel. Welcome to Pirate Nation!

2014 Season Outlook

Ward finds a Good Matchup with Charlestown Work Ethic By Kenzie Winstead | The Courier-Journal

Darin Ward believes he’s a natural fit as the head football

coach at Charlestown High School. Ward, who went 60-27

in eight years at Corydon, will try to continue that success

with the Mid-Southern Conference rival Pirates. “It’s a

football school, a football town,” said Ward, who added that

his blue-collar ethic matches up perfectly with Charlestown

and his new players. “It’s been nice to see them embrace

hard work,” he said. “They’ve really gone to work this

summer. It’s been refreshing.” Ward said he wants a big,

physical team and quickly points to the trenches, where he believes football begins and ends.

“We want to be physical on both sides of the ball,” he said.

“Usually physical teams run the ball well and really defend the

run. We will use the run to set up the pass. We’ll be a play-

action pass team, and we’ll spread the ball and throw to some

athletes in spaces. “It may not be down the field like most

people think of with traditional passing teams.” The Pirates

have two previous starters at quarterback in senior Tristan

Chester and sophomore Antonyo Gaddie. Ward said Chester

will start at that position this season. “We’ve been working on his mechanics, mainly his footwork,” the

coach said. “I’m trying to get him into a better position to be successful to throw it. It starts from the

ground up.” Gaddie, who will line up at running back most of the time, was forced into action at

quarterback much of last season because of injuries to other players, and he ran for nearly 800 yards.

“He is a really good athlete, good kid, an explosive kid,” Ward said. Chester said he believes the

Pirates will be balanced on offense.

Page 8: Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Pirate …piratepride.blue/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/2014Pirate...3 Introduction Welcome to Charlestown High School and the tradition, pride,

8

“I really think it’ll be 50-50,” he said. “We just want to be consistent, go out there

every night and be consistent. We want to execute the game plan.”

Versatile senior Eli Daniel will play wide receiver, defensive back and punter

and probably will get some carries, too.

“They move me around a little bit,” said

Daniel, brother of Aaron Daniel,

Charlestown’s record-setting quarterback

in 2012. “I will play wherever they need

me. I’m playing to win. Wherever he tells

me to play, I’ll play.” Daniel said conditioning is more of a

priority with the new coaching staff. “We run a lot more, which

is a good thing,” he said. “He wants us to be the most

conditioned team.” The Pirates return several starters on the offensive line, including center Austin

Keith and tackles Trent Gilbert and Kyle Richey. Tight end Hunter Grace (6-3,

255) is a three-year starter. “We’re playing him with his hand on the ground,”

Ward said. “He’s a big guy.”

One of the leaders on defense is senior linebacker Jacob Wheeler, who says

the line is the strength of the team. “We’ll be really good up front,” said.

Returning starters on that line are end Jordan Combs (6-1, 200) and tackles

Quinton Fetz (6-3, 295), Andrew Stamper (6-0, 270) and Cody Johnson (5-

10, 205). Wheeler, whose personal goal is to break the school record of 24

tackles in a game, is also on the swim team, specializing in the freestyle and breaststroke. “It is a little

unusual,” he said of the combination of sports. “It really helps me with stamina.” The Pirates’ schedule

includes a game against Mid-Southern favorite Brownstown at spacious Lucas Oil Stadium, home of

the Indianapolis Colts. Charlestown will play only three true home games.
