HUMOR
Family ReunionBy BERNIE ERICKSON
Growing up in a small town in northern Minnesota, I
was fortunate to have both sets of grandparents living nearby,
which meant lots of gatherings with lots of aunts, uncles and
cousins.
Every July, we looked forward to at least one family—
if not two or three—who lived in a faraway place
like Minneapolis or Seattle making the trip back
home.
But as time moved on, grandpas and
grandmas moved to smaller homes, cousins
became moms and dads, and lazy summer
afternoons spending time with cousins became
a distant memory.
I decided it was time to do something about
that, so I called my friend Dahlia.
Dahlia lives in the historic mansion where she and her
husband raised their family. Now they are well-known
for throwing the most fabulous holiday parties and the
benchmark of all summer parties.
“Dahlia, I’m thinking of hosting a family reunion. Since you
throw such great parties, you must have some insights on how
to do this.”
“Well, you might be surprised,” she said, “but after a couple
of snooze-fests, we all agreed that forcing a summer family get-
together just isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.”
First thing, Dahlia said, decide on a cool name for your family
gathering.
“Family Reunion” sounds OK but kind of hearkens
to registration tables, sign-up sheets and public
campgrounds with dubious restroom facilities.
My friend Sydney’s family has a biennial
“Schmuck-fest” at a nice resort.
Another’s family calls their event “Quake at the
Lake.”
It seems things tend to get a bit out of hand at
that one.
I decided to call ours “Get-Together.”
“What about food?” I asked Dahlia.
I told her I read in Betty Better-han-Yours’ advice column
that throwing a party and then asking guests to provide food
was rude and should not be done under any circumstances.
EVER.
Dahlia said that it would be rude to deprive Aunt Marjene the
honor of showing of her cream-cheese-Velveeta-and-sardine-
stufed lefse nibbles to everyone.
And it would be naïve to believe that Uncle Cletus would show

up without some pickled ish heads in a
jar and some smoked wild game sausage
and jerky sticks and a very detailed story
of how each one made it from the wild to
our picnic table.
Lastly, who wants to risk being
responsible for some cranky cousin’s
woeful sighing at the pitiful lack of food at
the bufet table and constant ofers to “run
to the store and pick up a little something.
Seriously, I don’t mind. Really.”
Not me.
Assigned potluck it would be.
First names A through H would bring a
salad, I through O would bring a hot dish,
and P through Z would bring dessert.
And yes, Aunt Marjene’s lefse nibbles
would count as a dessert even though
they contained cured ish. here were
irm instructions that if you wanted to
bring something outside of your assigned
category, you must swap with someone
of another category or else the whole
balance would be thrown of, and the day
would simply deteriorate from there.
After all, this IS my family, and if there
is one thing they know about me, it is that
I have certain control and organizational
oddities that are best privately
acknowledged and then pleasantly lived
with.
Finally, Dahlia said, don’t forget about
something for the kids to do.
Was she kidding? hat would
be my favorite part of the event
planning. 1. A garden hose and a slip-
n-slide. 2. A few old bicycles borrowed
from neighbors. 3. A net of some type,
volleyball or two and some badminton
rackets and birdies. 4. A bucket full of
squirt guns and a water cannon.
he water cannon is for me.
Nothing gets kids squealing like a crazy
uncle popping out from around a corner
and soaking them down with a water
cannon.
Well, with Dahlia’s sensible advice, a
few weeks later our irst “Get-Together”
came of without a hitch.
Plenty of food. Plenty of fun.
And plenty of new memories for a new
generation of grandmas and grandpas
and aunts and uncles and cousins.
Not Even The Bill.

Everybody knows that home is where the heart is. But what happens when one
heart is in two places?
Last February, Damber Adhikari left Bowling Green, her adopted home, and
returned to Nepal to get married. Her husband was known to many in Kathmandu.
Rupesh Upreti is a dancer and performer who often appears in television shows there.
As is the custom in Nepal, Damber’s family and friends had arranged the meeting
with the hope that they would fall in love and get married.
Which they did.
But at the end of the trip, when it came time to return to Bowling Green, Rupesh
could not join his new bride. He had to stay in Nepal and initiate the long process of
immigrating to the United States.
Among the many others who await the opportunity to come to the U.S. are Damber’s
parents and the youngest of their six children. he process can take months, but
Damber is conident that she will be reunited with her husband and her parents. Just
in the meantime, she also knows how important that time together is.
So as 2014 turned into 2015, she made plans to visit. In early April, she took time
away from her work at Graves Gilbert Clinic and made the long light to Kathmandu.
Heartache and Heartbreak A Firsthand Account of the Nepal Earthquakes
En route to her in-laws' home in Nepal, Damber Adhikari was alarmed by the destructive force of the earthquakes and aftershocks. Roads were covered with stones and travel was nearly impossible.

Everything went well. She was reunited
with Rupesh and stayed with him in the
countryside at the home of her new in-
laws. hey wanted to get the formalities
of visiting family out of the way so that
she and Rupesh would have time just for
themselves. He had work to do, but she
made him promise that he would wrap
up ilming and then give his undivided
attention to relaxing and spending time
with her.
Together, along with the cast and crew,
they traveled into the northern part of
Kathmandu on a bus. hey stopped at
a little shop for snacks and then hiked
up onto a hillside that was selected
as a backdrop for the set. Damber
stood nearby, watching her husband’s
performance. A large boulder provided
some shade from the hot sun.
It was four minutes until noon on April
25, and we all know what happened next.
Nepal was hit by a magnitude-7.8
earthquake. housands of people were
buried alive. Buildings, temples and
landmarks were reduced to rubble.
Damber stood awestruck as buildings
collapsed in the distance. She says she
didn’t even have the wherewithal to
be concerned for her own safety. “One
of the guys was yelling, ‘Earthquake,
earthquake,’ and I said, ‘Really?’ But then
it got so big. I was looking for Rupesh, and
Strong aftershocks followed major earthquakes and turned ordinary citizens into emergency rescue crews.

he was looking for me,” she says.
“hank God we were outside,” she says.
“If we were inside, you never know who
would have survived.” She said the fact
that the quake occurred on Saturday was
a silver lining in a very dark cloud. Schools
and businesses that would normally be
open were closed. People were out and
about instead of sitting behind desks.
And as the aftershocks rumbled across
the landscape, being outside was the only
refuge. “We didn’t go inside. We stayed
outside. Nobody went inside. We were all
so scared,” she remembers.
For several hours, the cast and crew
were adrift. Eventually they boarded the
bus and left the hillside for the city. Rather
than risk going inside their apartments,
however, Damber and Rupesh and a
group of about 30 others spent the night
huddled in the open air, leaning against
each other in an efort to feel safe and
keep warm. Eventually they set up in a
market with a rolling aluminum gate
that could be kept open.
Rumors began to circulate that another
large quake would hit 24 hours after the
irst one, and in fact, there is geological
evidence to support that theory. Across
the quake zone, hundreds of thousands
of people slept under the stars in an eerie
silence.
Damber says that as time passed,
people determined that those rumors
must be false, and they began to return
to their homes to survey the damage.
She said she ventured into a store to try
to buy some vegetables from one of the
few vendors with food to sell. Suddenly,
a little more than 24 hours later on April
26, a magnitude-6.6 aftershock sent
people scrambling back outside. More
than 8,000 people had been killed in a
little over 24 hours.
For three days, they stayed in Gorkha,
just outside of Kathmandu, before
Damber convinced Rupesh that they
should head for higher ground and go
check on their parents.
Damber’s parents live in a lat area
and were relatively unscathed by the
earthquakes. But when they traveled up
the winding, rock-strewn roads in a trip
that she describes as harrowing, Damber
saw that every house that had been
standing when she irst came to visit
was now lattened—including Rupesh’s
parents’ house. he two-story family
home was now a one-story demolition
site. Rupesh and Damber found them in
a makeshift tent that they constructed
from bamboo and plastic.
“His parents are living in a little tent,”
she says. “hey’re OK, but their house is
gone.”
And they’re not alone. here are an
estimated 1.8 million people who lost
their homes in the quakes.
Damber and Rupesh stayed close to
his family homesite. hey felled giant
bamboo poles and used them to build
a larger shelter. Nepal is mostly jungle;
daytime temperatures reach into the
high 80s, but nights can be very cold.
here was no relief in sight, and Damber
blames not only their remote location but
also ineptitude and corruption on the
part of the Nepali government. She said
she is worried for everybody now because
they don’t have enough fresh water, they
don’t have enough food, and they don’t
have adequate shelter. “I’m just worried
for everybody. I’m worried the water will
make them sick,” she says.
Temples were destroyed. Landmarks
were destroyed. Houses were leveled.
People were in shock. he earth wouldn’t
stop rumbling. People were talking
about the end of the world. “Yes, it felt
like that. It felt like the end of the world,”
says Damber. “If you go there, you will
believe it is the end of the world.” She
says she remembers when the Mayan
calendar designated the 12th month of
the 12th year as the end of time. hat
number—12—kept being referenced.
She says that in the Nepali calendar,
April 25 is actually the 12th and that the

earthquakes occurred at the noon hour.
Despite the tragedy, Damber was slated
to leave Nepal and return to Bowling
Green. Her travel visa only allowed her
a brief visit, and she was scheduled to
come home May 13.
She says she woke up that morning
and showered, which sounds like a bit
of normalcy, but in reality, showers were
quick and unpleasant. Being inside was
not a safe place, and she jumped at every
noise. Rupesh would keep watch so that
nobody would come, and she didn’t even
bother to close the bathroom door in
case she had to leave in a hurry. She did
the same for him, and the two of them
headed toward the city for her departure.
She had intended to do at least a little
shopping for souvenirs. She was, after all,
on vacation.
Mother Nature had other plans. On
May 12, just as they arrived in the heart of
the city, winding through downed wires
and rubble heading for the newer section
of Kathmandu that had weathered the
tragedy better than the old section, they
felt that familiar rumble of earth. Again,
dust lew, and the earth rocked as the
third big quake hit Nepal. American
televisions showed an avalanche on
Mount Everest and a base camp destroyed
by snow. One hundred and thirty-ive
more people died, and 2,100 were injured.
When Damber inally arrived back
in the U.S., the air was calm, but sitting
under the shelter waiting for a ride
outside the Nashville airport, the sound
of cars brought back the ight or light
instinct.
Now, she is back to communicating via
social media with Rupesh and her friends
and family in Nepal. She continually
checks every Nepali news station. She
jokes that she is going to make a Facebook
update and when her friends in Nepal
want to know what’s happening with her,
she will happily report, “Nothing!”

Gunite is to swimming pools what oil is to paint, and
Larry Russell Smith considers himself a Renaissance man
when it comes to designing and installing these masterpieces.
Having spent years in the construction industry, Smith
understands that custom homes need custom pools. His
newly christened company, LR Smith Pool & Spa, is dedicated
to making that happen.

Waterfalls, ininity edges, the gradual
slope of a beach entry, tanning ledges
and other water features make each
gunite pool a unique expression of the
backyard landscape.
Gunite was originally developed for
the art of taxidermy. It is basically the
powder form of concrete shot through
a high-pressure wand—thus the “gun”
in “gunite.” For his part, Smith prefers
to use a slurry mixture called shotcrete.
But in a way, it is splitting hairs, because
shotcrete and gunite both result in
concrete pools that can be speciically
designed for the space.
his type of construction requires a
higher level of expertise, and one thing
that must be considered when using
shotcrete and gunite in pool design is
the experience factor.

comfortable building every type of pool,
from prefabricated to poured cement to
galvanized steel and stretched vinyl, but
he would love to be busy enough building
gunite pools to leave vinyl construction to
somebody else.
His passion for gunite construction
results from his love of customizing each
project. And as Smith points out, “rock-
star pools that are featured on CMT music
videos are not your vinyl pools.”
Fortunately for Smith, the home
of country music is our neighbor to
the south. Nashville afords Smith the
opportunity to follow the money while
still practicing his craft.
Besides the initial expense of having
an expert contractor and a custom
blueprint, the highest cost associated
with a gunite-style pool is the inish. Raw
textured concrete means bacteria have
a place to hide and multiply, so Smith
adds a secondary exterior coating called
Hydrazzo to make the raw surface smooth.
Hydrazzo is a crushed granite seal that
is polished using diamond pads. It allows

and makes the bottom smooth enough
for bare feet. If it sounds expensive, it is.
“he most expensive part of my pool was
the inish,” says Smith. He says gunite is
not for everybody but that if homeowners
can aford it, they should. “here are less
expensive pools available, but this is a
work of art.”
Smith also prefers a salt water system to
a chlorinated system. He says saltwater is
essentially self-cleaning and doesn’t cause
burning of skin and eyes. In addition to
his salt water system, Smith has installed
a vacuum that does automatic upkeep. He
says he doesn’t have to physically clean his
pool unless it’s very stormy or, in this case,
for a photo shoot.
Like any work of art, a gunite pool,
installed correctly and maintained over
its lifetime, is an investment that pays
dividends. It can greatly improve the
resale value of the home.
But given the luxury of lounging on the
tanning deck or soaking in the hot tub of
a truly custom pool made from concrete
and polished granite, moving day may
never come.

Q: Tim, We would like to add a porch to our existing home but are not sure how to proceed. We ind some porches exceedingly attractive while others look out of place. Can you give us some porch advice?
A: In my experience, you can add a
porch to almost any house, but only a well-
designed and well-constructed one will
look like it’s always been there. A beautiful
porch invites you to linger and delight in
that wonderful in-between space that’s
neither inside nor out but where you can
enjoy both.
What draws you to a porch, and what
makes some porches so attractive while
others seem unattractive and out of place?
Scale
Scale, sometimes referred to as
proportion, is the thing that most people
don’t consciously notice, but many know
instinctively if it is wrong. On a porch, it
might be the size or shape of the posts,
rails or trim. he best way to understand
the efect that proportion has on design
is to study porches that you like and
don’t like and take note of what you ind
unattractive. In our company, we build
a 3-D model of our projects during the
design phase. We build a scale model of
the existing home before the porch is
added and then add the porch. his allows
our customers to see what their project
will look like and make the necessary
adjustments prior to building it.
Materials
Choosing materials that complement
an existing structure is vitally important.

other materials. However, newer low-
maintenance products such as composite
hand rails and decking as well as iber
cement products are rapidly gaining
acceptance. hese products are a great
it for porches that have exposure to the
elements.
I like to get ideas from the existing house
and its surrounding materials and piece
together the combinations that will make
the porch more attractive. he trick is to
duplicate or complement the materials
that have already been used to build
and trim the home. If the real thing is no

At a minimum, an entry porch should
be 4 feet deep. his gives you room to
receive guests without forcing them
back down the steps when you open the
screen door.
If you’ll be using the porch for outdoor
activities, you’ll need more space.
Benches or chairs require at least 5 feet
of space from wall to railing. If you add
a table for eating, the wall-to-railing
distance should be at least 6 feet.
A porch must also properly protect
doors and windows from the elements.
It must be properly lashed to prevent
leaking between the structure and the
porch. And it should relect the style of
the existing home.
A porch can be a seemingly simple
structure to construct, but with the right
design professional and builder by your
side, a simple structure will become a
thing of beauty that you and your family
will enjoy for many years to come.

As the exclusive designer for Ford’s
Furniture in Bowling Green, Clarrisa
Smith has helped hundreds of people ind
their way through all the decision-making
required when decorating a home.
She has 35,000 feet of showroom to
select from, and if necessary she’ll zip
from one area of the store to the next,
putting together a mock-up of a room for
clients who have diiculty envisioning
a inished space. Lamps, rugs, lorals,
paintings and furnishings are the tools of
her trade.
Clarissa has a saying that sums up her
work. She uses it to explain that despite
her ability to bring a project to life,
of a Real ShowstopperShowcasing the Interiors
Retaining walls and a well-considered blueprint allow for maximum beauty on this corner lot.
Despite its Old World ambiance, the home is full of modern conveniences like an upstairs laundry room complete with a coffee kitchen.
Clarissa Smith has been helping customers at Ford’s Furniture renovate and recreate their interiors for almost 12 years. She handles everything from price point to picture placement and the service is free for Ford’s customers and corporate clients.

No room is off limits when it comes to accessorizing, and what better statement than Grecian art in a grotto bath.
A variation on the wagon wheel chandelier lends elegance to the foyer.
This intimate vignette is courtesy of the rich leather seating and built in case goods. What better place to relax on a cool evening and enjoy a good book?
A rag faux inish on every wall is the perfect inish. It enhances the placement of artwork and leads the eye seamlessly from one room to the next.
The simplicity of a serving tray speaks volumes—casual, welcoming and reined.
ultimately she will take a step back and let
the project stand on its own.
Her mantra: “When I leave here,” she
says, “you live here.”
In this case, however, that saying does
not apply. She lives here.
Clarissa and her husband, Larry
Russell Smith, built and decorated this
beautiful 6,500-square-foot home on one
of the last available lots in the Pine Grove
subdivision.
he lot had a steep grade that kept
many builders away, but Larry and his
business partner Barry Lindsey of Lindsey

Smith believes that everybody needs at least one timeless piece of furniture and one good accessory—be it a rug, a painting, or in this case a mirror.
Always consider the subject when selecting a frame. Here an old world portrait is framed by ornate styling
Back lighting on the buffet lets the holiday dishes sparkle.
Combining the interior light of the cabinet with a pair of table lamps and a spotlight above creates continuity and warmth.
Smith Construction were intrigued by the
potential. hey altered a blueprint and
designed a three-story old-world villa
and sited it so that the corner lot with the
steep grade becomes one of the home’s
core strengths.
A central staircase serves as a dramatic
focal point as well as a curved spine that
supports the entire circulation—from the
lower-level to the master suite—complete
with a private patio overlooking the pool

hey selected dark woods with rich
grain for the looring, the case goods
and much of the trim. he entire home is
painted in a rag faux inish that gives the
impression of soft leather. Crisp white was
used strategically on the molding to add
depth and contrast.
he home’s architectural elements
ofered the perfect foundation for Clarissa
to build upon. And while she is always
on the lookout for new decorating ideas
for clients, in her own home, she knows
exactly what she wants. She has collected
an extensive array of accessories, not the
least of which is her prized collection
of luxurious oil paintings in elaborate
frames.
“I’m over the top. I know it,” she laughs.
She tells the story of her moving day two
years ago. Bad weather was forecast, but
all she could think about that Friday
evening was meeting the moving truck
to unload her paintings. She says that she
and Larry worked all weekend, and by
Sunday evening, “the oil paintings were
hung, and it looked like somebody had
lived here for years.”
When she works for herself, she knows
her tastes. “I’m old school,” she says. And
the rich hues and brown leather, dark
woods and reined furnishings relect
that. With clients, however, the challenge
is diferent.
She says her job requires that she be
part best friend and part investigator. She
tries to get a sense of what each person
wants from his or her space and drills
down with a series of questions meant to
reveal a person’s true lifestyle.
“I listen,” she says. “I listen because part
of being a good decorator is being a good
listener.”

A mirror may be the perfect accessory because it is functional and at the same time mirrors can add unique depth and elegance in the most interesting angles.
This corner lamp is both functional and beautiful. Forcing the light toward the ceiling, the eye travels upward.
A lovely vase can stand on its own thanks to its classic black and gold French country motif.
Equestrian design elements are displayed throughout, but captured here in this unique desk lamp.
It’s all in the perspective. The designer encourages clients to maximize the scale of the home and not to be afraid to “go big” with wall art. Her own personal collection of oils is her muse for each of the rooms.
BG HOME & LIFESTYLE • WWW.BGDAILYNEWS.COM JULY/AUGUST 2015 • 25• JULY/AUGUST 2015 BG HOME & LIFESTYLE • WWW.BGDAILYNEWS.COM
A beautiful leather headboard compliments the Master suite.
Built in bookcases in the bathroom can display towels, soaps, candles, or in this case, family pictures.
Measure, measure, and measure again advises the designer. Once the moving truck is at the door, it’s not the time to have miscalculated.
One client had resorted to “living in
her bedroom” because she “hated her
house.” So Clarissa put her skills to work,
redesigned the entire home, and surprised
this client with a reveal that brought her
to tears of joy and relief.
Listening is a big part of what she does,
but in the end, her clients need more than
a good listener; they need somebody to
help them personalize the space.
Clarissa’s advice is to make the room
itself a foundation for anything that goes
in it. She calls it putting the toppings on
vanilla ice cream. “Don’t paint your house
14 diferent colors and expect it to work,”
she warns.
In addition, she says discussing the
budget is critical. Some clients are not
comfortable having that conversation,
but she really appreciates those who do.
It helps her know where the client stands
inancially so she can select from the
furniture lines at Ford’s Furniture to get
the best price point.
No matter the budget, Clarissa
says accessories are as important as
furnishings. Her goal is to make sure a
client has at least one timeless piece of
furniture and one great accessory—a rug,
a painting or a lamp.
And despite her appreciation for those
online sources like Pinterest and Houzz.
com she is a self-described non-techie.
A mere twelve year veteran of a family
business founded 78 years ago, she is also
the “baby of the Ford’s family.”
Alvin Ford Jr. along with Harry Ford
Jr. and Andy Ford make up the second
generation of owners. And Alvin especially
likes to joke with his designer about her
aversion to email and other trappings of
the modern world.
Smith smiles and is undeterred by the
ribbing. Although she literally brings her
work home, she also knows how to keep a
good work life balance.
“When at work,” she says, “I give it
my full measure.” But her preference
for weekends is not to endlessly check
email or surf the web. She would much
rather curl up poolside, watch throwback
television and enjoy time with her
husband and their trio of four-legged
“children.”

stylish summer-like event.
he most important step in creating
a truly memorable party is to keep it
simple. Begin with a theme that ties
the invitations, menu, music, lighting
and tablescape together. Color is a key
ingredient. Try natural hues such as
green and white, fresh and full of life. Add
beautiful details: white peonies and crisp
white linens, dewy fresh limes, fresh mint
leaves, green foliage, honeydew and green
hydrangeas. Categorize the planning
stage into easy-to-follow steps.
Invitation: his is the foundation of
your party. Choose something with a bit of
class and a touch of whimsy, because this
is the irst place your guests are enticed
to fall in love with the date on their social
calendar.
Menu selection: I recently served an
easy and delicious hors d’oeuvres menu
of smoked salmon with chive cream
and gourmet latbread, white bean dip
with rosemary olive oil, baked Colby,
pepper jack cheese dip served with sweet
potato chips, brown sugar fruit dip with
strawberries, pineapple and honeydew.
Read your recipes a few times if trying
new ones, and make sure they are not too
complicated. I love a signature cocktail
that carries your theme, such as mojitos
with green mint leaves in pretty glass
pitchers to serve to the guests as they
arrive.
Presentation: Make a list of your
menu items in a hostess diary; include a
shopping list and serving dishes next to
each item. Make the food look attractive
by using vintage bowls and crisp white
dishes, and bring back classic sterling
silver punch bowls as ice buckets for
wine and other beverages. Gather white
peonies from your garden and place in
clear glass vases to add elegance to your
tablescape and theme.
Beautiful bar: Build a beautiful bar
that relects the feel of the event. Dress
your table in a white linen tablecloth that
gracefully grazes the ground. Arrange
green hydrangeas in large vases, scatter
white pillar candles in glass hurricanes
and incorporate votive candles for a
magical efect. Candles with strong
scents—cinnamon, cedar, basil and

WHITE BEAN DIP WITH ROSEMARY OLIVE OIL
Rosemary oil adds rich lavor and color to this earthy dip. If you are short on time, top instead with kosher salt and olive oil. Prep and cook time: 20 minutesyield: 2 cups (serving size 1 tablespoon)
INGREDIENTS:¼ cup olive oil, divided2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced (add more as you like)2 cans (15 ounces each) white beans (great northern, cannellini or white kidney beans) drained and rinsed2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice2 teaspoons kosher salt (add less or as you like it)3 sprigs fresh rosemary, rinsed
DIRECTIONS:In a 10-inch frying pan over medium heat, stir half the olive oil and the 2 gloves garlic until fragrant, being careful not to brown garlic, about 1 minute. Pour the oil and garlic into food processor. Wipe out the pan and set aside.
Add white beans, lemon juice, and small amount of the salt to the food processor and whirl until smooth. Pour into a serving bowl.
Return the frying pan to medium heat and add the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil and the rosemary sprigs. Warm the rosemary in the olive oil until fragrant, about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally so the rosemary doesn’t burn. Remove from heat and let cool 10 minutes.
Set the rosemary aside and drizzle the olive oil over the bean dip. Mince 1 tablespoon of the rosemary leaves and sprinkle over the dip.

A beautiful array of edible lowers including violets, dandelions and chrysanthemums
Chopped chive blossoms have a delicious, mild onion lavor.
The delicious art of edible lowers Take advantage of the natural beauty, aroma and lavors from your garden
It is known that a rose called by any other name smells as sweet, but
what about taste? Beauty and fragrance—as well as creativity and
curiosity—have long been integral components used by our ancestors.
According to recorded history, nearly every civilization has used
lowers in the form of food, including the Incas, Aztecs, Hindus, early
Romans and Asian cultures. Tangled pea vines and roses are depicted
on Bronze Age artifacts. Carnations are used to make Chartreuse,
an old classic French liqueur. Leonardo da Vinci himself penned his
own rosewater recipe. Flowers and their seeds were just as important
during the spice trade as spices like cardamom, cinnamon and mace.
Flowers have not been restricted to the conines of a vase since 140

B.C., where they were irst mentioned
as something greater than the beauty of
their petals.
Edible lowers are simple to grow at
home and are becoming readily available
at farmers markets and grocery stores.
When using lowers as a part of your
home cooking, it is important to keep
a few things in mind. Not all lowers are
entirely edible. For example, only the
petals of roses, calendulas (marigolds,
also called poor-man’s safron), tulips
and chrysanthemums are edible. It is
important to remove reproductive parts—
stamens and styles—before use.
Be familiar with where your lowers
are coming from, or better yet, grow
them yourself to ensure that you know
their source. Don’t eat anything that
has been treated with pesticides. Pick
lowers early or late in the day, as you
would other produce. Sugars and volatile
oils, which give lowers their aroma and
lavor, are highest before the heat of the
day and photosynthesis converts them
into starch. Do be cognizant that some
lowers are poisonous, including azaleas,
crocuses, dafodils, foxglove, oleander,
rhododendron, jack-in-the-pulpits and
lilies of the valley. However, do not let this
deter you from expressing creativity in
the kitchen, because edible lowers vastly
outnumber those you should not eat.
Flowers that are wholly edible, such as
violets, pansies, nasturtiums, honeysuckle,
lilacs and begonias, are beautiful inside of
a homemade Popsicle, almost frozen in
time. Begonias lend a citrus lavor, while
the violets add an earthy sweetness. For a
lovely presentation, fold them gently into
cake batter, add to ice cream or place on
your plated dessert.
Today, like they did centuries ago,
lowers add lavor, charm and romance
to our food. Imagine hibiscus or gladiolus
holding your favorite fruit dip, candied
and sugared blossoms for cake decoration.
Add their petals to tea. Incorporate
the beauty and delicious aroma of the
blossoms by steeping in milk or cream to
create a loral crème.
Herb lowers are not to be forgotten. We
often overlook their potential; in fact, we
purposefully rid them to give more plant

FLORAL ICE CUBES
INGREDIENTS:Edible lowers, such as orchids, violets, nasturtiums, pansies and snapdragons, that have never been treated with chemicals.
Water. For crystal-clear ice, use distilled water that has been boiled and then cooled. This will eliminate impurities and air bubbles, which make cloudy ice.
DIRECTIONS:To suspend lowers in the cubes, work in layers: Fill an ice tray (large cubes will last longer) a quarter of the way with water. Add lowers, facing down, and freeze. Add more water to ill halfway, and freeze. Fill to the top, and freeze again.
