Funded by the Skills Funding Agency via the Humber LEP, the Skills Support for the Workforce project has provided specialist training for staff in SMEs across the Humber, delivered through a skills partnership managed by HCUK training.
The aim of the SSW project was to fund training, qualifications and business support to help local employers by improving skills in areas that will ensure the best future business growth across the Humber.
Local Enterprise Partnerships have played a vital role in determining the effective use of this funding, helping to identify the skills priorities for the Humber region. As a result, this has ensured that the funding available has been used specifically to address the needs SMEs employing less than 250 staff across four local authorities.
Examples include:
• Safer working environment
• Better qualified staff
• Better customer relations and service
• Better use of IT and social media in the workplace
• Improved confidence within a new job role
• Reduced accidents in the workplace
• More diverse workforce enabling higher productivity
• Industry recognised qualifications to allow the company to bid for more work and expand their client base

On-site staff carried out Health & Safety and specialist training to ensure they have the skills they need to carry out jobs to the highest standards.
Twin brothers Anthony and Chris Dixon were part of Hall Construction’s drive to upskill their staff through a training programme which included 16 members of staff undertaking qualifications including Site Supervisors and Site Managers Training Courses.
The brothers, who are part of the Hall teams working on several projects providing solid wall insulation to homes to improve their energy performance.
Both Anthony & Chris successfully passed the Site Supervisor’s safety training scheme and are now considering progressing to study units towards a higher level qualification.
Ben’s training helped him become more confident in his role by developing the skills he needed to progress himself and the company.

With increased competition both in the UK and in Europe, we identified a need to reduce overheads, increase productivity and develop leadership skills. This staff training has helped us as a business move forward.
The courses have been tailored to our every need and we will continue to call on Kingsway in the future to help with our external training needs.
Skipsea-based ice cream maker Mr Moo’s has benefited from fully-funded training under Skills Support for the Workforce (SSW) for the Level Two Award in Food Safety. They have also been funded to progress onto the Level Three Award in Food Safety Supervision, which is supporting the company’s expansion plans by giving more employees team leading skills. Managing Director Judith Foreman said: “SSW is enabling us to give our employees essential training at no cost to the business, which in turn means we can invest in further qualifications in management to ensure we are continually developing our team here.
Drivers carried out advanced training and NVQs to ensure they have the latest qualifications to keep them on the road.

Staff training and development is at the forefront of The Deep’s priorities. Accessing the SSW project benefited staff from across the organisation and allowed the company to future proof their business.
Margaret Money, Marketing Manager from Regal Fish Supplies in Grimsby, enrolled for a Social Media course run by Grimsby Institute as part of the SSW project to build her Facebook and Twitter knowledge. “The amount of information I have gained from the course has been really good. Although I thought we were using social media to the best of our abilities it’s become apparent that a lot of the time we weren’t. We put a lot of industry information out there but we need to be engaging with people a lot more, whether that’s customers or other businesses.”
The training we have received has had a massive impact on our organisation as we have been able to refresh employees existing skills and help them develop new ones.
This training would have cost a significant amount of money, so the savings we have made will mean we can re-invest this money into the business, making a huge impact on the future of our organisation.

It is very difficult to estimate the specific scope of people employed in the renewables and associated sectors within SMEs in the Humber. Many of the businesses working in this sector also cross over into the Ports and Logistics and Engineering/Manufacturing sectors. It is acknowledged that this is a growing sector with the expectation of a significant increase in the workforce over the next 24 months.

The new careers game: Ecliptic
ONE OF THE UK’S LEADING SSW PROJECTS #WOW
A unique commission from the SSW project was awarded to a consortium of young digital businesses to create a ‘careers game’ aimed at helping young people choose a career path in the digital sector.
The companies behind the development, yesyesBD, Smashed Crab Studio and Visceral Creative, worked with careers advisors to create a game that uses psychometric questioning throughout to determine the players personality and best career match.
At the end of the game, the player is given a map of their route, which relates to educational courses that they might consider, with a link to further information from the ‘Bridging the Gap’ website.

The Yorkshire Maintenance Company (Hull) Ltd is a shopfitting and maintenance company, working on various sites on a national scale. They are currently working for clients such as Carphone Warehouse, Perfume Shop, McDonalds, JD Sports, and Carillion; to name but a few.
Through CITB they have been able to access the LRF funding stream, and as a
result of this 5 of their employees have undertaken courses run by the CITB at local Hull venues.
“The funding has helped several of our employees achieve qualifications in SMSTS and SSSTS and without the funding available we would not have been able to give these opportunities to our employees and achieve their goals.”
