3STRATFORD PERTH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION | It all comes back to you

We inspire giving. We care for the assets entrusted to us. And we invest in the people, ideas and activities that strengthen our community. We are YoUR community foundation. since 2004, we have been connecting caring donors to causes that matter. We exist for Stratford, St. Marys and Perth County - now and forever. This past year has been one of celebration and impact. We’ve continued our focus on achieving the goals set out in our strategic plan. on pages 14 & 15 you will learn about how we have created momentum with our Smart & Caring Community Fund initiative. We hosted our very first Alumni Reception to help celebrate everything that has been accomplished since our inception and we hosted our first Holiday open House to commemorate a successful year. We are pleased to share that as of December 2016, we reached almost $3.5 million in endowed assets, making a rebound from the previous year’s investment challenges. New gifts to the Community Foundation reached over $724,000 and we welcomed seven new endowed funds and nine new named funds under our Smart & Caring Community Fund umbrella (page 16) – demonstrating our community’s generosity and commitment to philanthropy.

on the following pages, you will find stories about just a few of the impactful grants made by generous fund holders. Community investment is an important part of the work we do. As noted in our financial statements on pages 20 & 21, grants made by the stratford Perth Community Foundation were $120,589 in 2016. Awareness about the Community Foundation continues to grow as we expand our events and outreach. our second Community Impact Celebration featured a panel of Community Foundation donors moderated by Lloyd Robertson, along with stories from some of our grant recipients (page 19). Random Act of Kindness Day (page 13) continues to inspire generosity and kind-hearted acts and we “paid kindness forward” by hosting kick offs in stratford, st. Marys, Listowel and Mitchell. The recent Mayors’ Gala (page 12) in January 2017 was another smashing success, raising over $118,000 to help further our community leadership and outreach activities. All of this success is made possible because of our volunteers, donors, corporate partners and champions. Thank you for believing in our vision of realizing community vitality through philanthropy. We are excited for what the next year has in store for us and are grateful you are joining us on the journey.

Known for her kindness and generosity – here in stratford but also in many other impoverished areas around the world – local Rotarian, Jean Aitcheson, RN established the Jean Aitcheson Nursing scholarship Fund for a Northwestern secondary school student entering his/her first year of post-secondary studies at a Canadian University or Community College working to obtain registration as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) or Registered Nurse (RN).

“After a 52 year career, I’m deeply passionate about nursing,” shares Jean Aitcheson. “In celebration of my retirement, I set up the scholarship at the Community Foundation so that I could encourage young people to pursue their dream of nursing. Investing in the Foundation makes it an annual reminder for me.”

Jean first came up with the idea of establishing a scholarship after Tracy Van Kalsbeek, Executive Director of the Community Foundation spoke at her Rotary Club. “It got me thinking about my retirement and how, by setting up a scholarship, I could help someone else get started in a profession that I love.”

Jean’s family hosted a retirement party to celebrate her long career. This provided a chance for friends, neighbours, colleagues and former patients to honour Jean by expanding upon her personal vision of building the scholarship.

Jean thinks that scholarships are a great idea for people who are business professionals. “They provide an opportunity to recognize the impact of your profession, the life you’ve lived and the satisfaction you felt in your career. “

When asked how she feels about leaving such an important legacy, Jean responds, “Many years from now a student may ask ‘Who was that Jean Aitcheson?’ Well, she was a nurse who had a varied and interesting career – a career that was based mostly in stratford but that also took her around the world – and she wanted to help a student get started in the profession she loved so much.”

A NURsING LEGACY

As the inaugural recipient of the Jean Aitcheson Nursing scholarship, Lyndy Mikel was greatly inspired by Jean’s story. Lyndy worked three jobs to help save money for school, stating that, “As a nurse you have to work long hours – so I was preparing.”

Lyndy is in her first year of nursing school and couldn’t be more thrilled. Her biggest goal in life is to help people and she loves how nursing makes a difference in so many lives. Receiving the scholarship has been a huge financial help and Lyndy can’t thank Jean enough. “Jean is an incredible role model! It’s amazing that she created a scholarship to help others get a start in a career that meant so much to her – thank you so much Jean!”

A PLACE To TALK

Crossing Bridges has already begun making an impact. shares one grateful mother, “My daughter spent the afternoon at Crossing Bridges and absolutely loved the environment. she is literally buzzing with excitement! This is huge, because typically she is pretty reserved and doesn’t show much emotion. Thank you for making this possible!”

First started in stratford in 2007, Crossing Bridges is a youth drop-in program that gives information to assist in dealing with substance use and mental health concerns. Young people are provided with day-time shelter, food, life skills, free and confidential counselling and assistance, information about support services available in the community and help connecting to those services if required. But, most importantly, Crossing Bridges is a place to talk.

“Crossing Bridges is a safe environment for our youth,” shares Catherine Hardman, Executive Director of Choices for Change, the organization that partnered with the United Way Perth-Huron to start the transformational program in Listowel in october of 2016. The two organizations decided to bring the program to North Perth youth after community consultations hosted by United Way identified youth mental health as a key priority.

Three funds from the stratford Perth Community Foundation banded together to provide $10,000 in funding for Crossing Bridges last year – the Brain & Mind Matters Community Fund, Carnegie Family Fund and the smart & Caring Community Fund.

Funding from the Community Foundation was instrumental in getting Crossing Bridges up and running. since october, they’ve been able to secure a location at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church, acquire program materials, purchase computers and hire support staff. “We are still in the early stages and are working to identify specific programming needs like whether the youth are looking for anger management classes, mindfulness training or young parenting classes,” adds Catherine.

CREATING EFFICIENCIEs, THREE YEARs LATER The healthcare environment in Long Term Care is continuously changing and advancing technology plays a large role in that evolution.

Back in February of 2014, Knollcrest Lodge in Milverton received grants from the Ideal supply Community Fund and Melanson Family Fund to purchase equipment to support the transition from paper to electronic records – specifically an electronic version of the Medication Administration Record system (eMARs).

“Today, when we reminisce, we cannot imagine a day in Long Term Care without the current electronic system.”

THE IMPACT the increased costs associated with it – and he also knew that investment in good software could really increase efficiency and make a positive impact. “I’m so thrilled we could help Knollcrest and it’s great to hear how eMARs has improved the care of the residents.”

“Today, when we reminisce, we cannot imagine a day in Long Term Care without the current electronic system,” adds susan. “Your generous support allowed us to make great strides in providing quality care to meet our residents’ complex health care needs. Thank you again!”

Three years later, staff at Knollcrest say they couldn’t live without it. “eMARs has made a significant impact on our work efficiency,” notes susan Rae, CEo of Knollcrest Lodge. some of the best outcomes have included:

• Addressing gaps that occurred as a result of the paper-based documentation

• Increased accuracy and comprehensiveness of patient information and care

• Enhanced provision of quality nursing care – specifically an improvement in overall efficiency for nurses when they administer medication

• Reduction in medication errors

eMARs also allowed for integration with the local pharmacy’s computer software and the ability to transfer information electronically between Knollcrest Lodge and the pharmacy. Tom Melanson established his family fund at the Community Foundation in 2013 at a time when he was easing off of his business responsibilities and considering how he wanted to make a difference locally. “My wife and I raised three children here and this community has been instrumental in the success of my business – I thought it was time for me to turn that giving back around,” shares Tom. The eMARs project intrigued Tom. Given his business acumen, he understood the importance of technology and

CoNNECTING A NEW GENERATIoN THRoUGH THEATREThis past summer, the World Festival of Children’s Theatre (WFCT) brought together children from all around the world to share each other’s stories and culture through theatre. Engaging a broad range of associations and individuals, the project helped create cultural understanding, improve literacy, express creativity through theatre and inspire community.

Learning that they had received grants from the Culliton Fund, stratford smart & Caring Community Fund and the Keith and Frances Culliton Fund was a great day for Ron Dodson, Artistic Director of the 14th WFCT. “Getting funding from the Community Foundation gave credibility to our project and helped us open doors to other funders and partners,” shares Ron. “We were able to provide better training for volunteers and improved activities – we could

Hosting the 14th WFCT created intercultural communication, awareness and learning. Children and their families had the opportunity to host other children from one of the 18 countries represented at the Festival and share cultural differences. “We saw new perspectives and insights into other cultures as the families and the children learned how there really are no borders when you get kids performing and playing together – it was really magical,” adds steve Rae, one of the funders who supported the Festival through the Community Foundation.

While the greatest impact of the Festival was made with the children, when asked what the key learnings from the project were Ron noted, “Assemble a great team of people, make sure you give yourself enough planning time, ensure effective communication with organizers, schools, volunteers, media etc., don’t over program, stay true to your mission and engage with the local community.”

Families have continued to stay in touch since the Festival – one stratford family is even travelling to Estonia later this year for a wedding being held by their guest family. Adds 14th WFCT planning member and steve’s wife Carolyn Rae, “We wanted to help make life-long memories – and that we did.”

Mark your calendars for the 9th Annual Mayors’ Gala on Saturday, January 20th, 2018

at the Stratford Country Club.

A PARTY WITH A PURPosE

“This event truly epitomizes who we are – a group of people who come together because we care deeply about the places we live, work and play.” - MAYOR DAN MATHIESON

The stratford Perth Community Foundation celebrated the 8th Annual Mayors’ Gala on saturday, January 28th, 2017 with over 300 stylish guests. Hosted by stratford’s Mayor Dan Mathieson and supported by the Mayors of North Perth, Perth East, Perth south, st. Marys and West Perth, along with the Warden of Perth County, this memorable evening drew together business leaders, philanthropists, community volunteers and guests from all over to celebrate our community. Attendees sipped sparkling wine, enjoyed oysters and delicious hors d’oeuvres, bid on interesting silent auction items and caught up with old friends and met new ones at the stratford Country Club.

The dollars raised at the Gala help to further the Community Foundation’s leadership and outreach activities – including support to charitable organizations made possible by responsible stewardship of endowed funds. Through the sale of tickets, a fantastic silent auction and with the help of corporate partners like Presenting Partner BMo Financial, this year, the Mayors’ Gala yielded over $118,000 for the Community Foundation. “once again, we were completely thrilled by the support and grateful to all who attended,” shares Tracy Van Kalsbeek, Executive Director of the Community Foundation. “In just eight years of hosting the Gala, we’ve raised close to $620,000 – all thanks to the generosity of caring businesses and individuals in our communities.”

The message is simple: do something nice for someone and ask nothing in return other than they do something nice for someone else.

since 2008, Random Act of Kindness Day® has brought together Canadian communities by engaging citizens in small acts of kindness and generosity. on November 4th, 2016, the Community Foundation collaborated with other local groups and individuals in stratford, st. Marys and Perth County to help create a more empathetic and connected community.

Part of the beauty of the initiative is that it doesn’t have to cost a cent. Holding a door open, words of thanks and encouragement, telling someone they’ve done a good job – these are the kinds of acts that citizens ‘pay forward’ on this special day.

For the first time, the Community Foundation set up a special page on its website to track acts of kindness and share what businesses, organizations, services clubs, schools and individuals were doing to spread kindness on November 4th. Also new this year, the Community Foundation expanded celebratory kickoffs for Random Act of Kindness Day in stratford, st. Marys, Mitchell and Listowel. stratford and st. Marys both proclaimed the day as Random Act of Kindness Day as well.

Thank you to everyone who participated and made the day such a success! Mark your calendars for the 2017 Random Act of Kindness Day on November 3rd,.

Every one of us is a product of our community. The communities we call home help make us who we are. Every community is the sum of the people who live within it – a unique mix of personalities, cultures and interests. The causes we

care about, the time we invest, the people we bring together – they all shape our communities.

The stratford Perth Community Foundation is building Smart & Caring Community Funds in each of our six municipalities. In 2015, Smart & Caring Community Funds were established in stratford and North Perth. In 2016, Perth south and st. 19STRATFORD PERTH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION | It all comes back to you

on June 5th, 2016 we celebrated “all for community” at our second annual Community Impact Celebration with over 120 of our donors, community leaders and charitable partners.

Hosted at the Best Western Plus The Arden Park Hotel in stratford and presented by WK Financial, this event featured sPCF Honorary Patron Lloyd Robertson as our Master of Ceremonies and showcased a panel of local philanthropists – Matt staffen from st. Marys, Mayor Dan Mathieson and sue orr from stratford. Moderated by Mr. Robertson, the panel discussed what inspired them to ‘give back’ and what their philanthropic vision was for their community. Also, sharing stories of impact were steve stacey from The Local Community Food Centre and Kendra Martin from Little Falls Public school in st. Marys. The two provided details about their organizations and how grants from the sPCF had helped them to facilitate programs and projects.

over $120,000 was granted in 2016 to important projects and initiatives making a difference in stratford, st. Marys and Perth County. Tracy Van Kalsbeek, Executive Director of the Community Foundation shared with the crowd at the event, “We’ve granted to programs that tackle our communities’ most pressing needs – helping to create real change. We are proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish and, with the help of our loyal donors, look forward to growing our granting abilities in the years to come.”

25STRATFORD PERTH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION | It all comes back to you

A few years ago, Dianne Walkom read an insert about the stratford Perth Community Foundation in the Beacon Herald. she got thinking about how her family could leave a lasting legacy for their community. Giving back locally had always been important to Dianne and her husband. When Brian passed away in 2015, Dianne was required to update her will. In doing so, she conceded that her two daughters were doing well so when it came to her life insurance policy, she decided to make the Community Foundation the beneficiary. “My family has been blessed and there isn’t one of us who really needs more money,” shares Dianne. “I thought it was important for us to give back to our community instead.”

YoU DoN’T HAVE To BE A MILLIoNAIRERecently, Dianne took things a step further and made the decision to transfer her life insurance policy to the Community Foundation. After discussing matters with her accountant and with staff at the Community Foundation, Dianne learned that by transferring her life insurance policy she could receive a charitable tax receipt for the cash surrender value of the policy and because she continues to pay the annual premiums, she receives a charitable receipt for those too. “You don’t have to be a millionaire to make this kind of contribution,” adds Dianne. “While I can’t give a large amount now, by transferring my life insurance policy and setting up a letter of intent with the Community Foundation, I have peace of mind in knowing that I will be making a difference to the causes I care about most – forever. Anyone can do this!”

LEAVING A GIFT oF LIFE INsURANCELife insurance offers a host of possibilities for making a gift with significant value. Its appeal lies in its affordability for those who may not have the cash savings to make large gifts. Life insurance gifts can also be attractive for an older donor who is prepared to forgo a lump sum to see it returned as a death benefit. There are several options:

1. Life Insurance is owned by the stratford Perth Community Foundation. A donor purchases a policy and then immediately donates it to the stratford Perth Community Foundation, which designates itself as beneficiary. The donor will receive acknowledgment from the stratford Perth Community Foundation as soon as the policy is purchased and assigned. The donor can continue to pay the premiums and receives a charitable receipt for each premium payment. Alternatively, the Community Foundation can opt to pay the premium if the donor no longer wishes to do so.

2. A donor can transfer an existing policy to the stratford Perth Community Foundation, in which case he or she receives a tax receipt for the cash surrender value of the policy.

3. Paid up insurance policies may also be given to the stratford Perth Community Foundation during the lifetime of the donor, but care must be taken, in the case of an absolute assignment, to check whether this might trigger personal tax problems.

4. Life Insurance can also be owned by the donor who names the sPCF as a beneficiary. In this case, the donor does not receive a tax credit for the premiums; instead, he or she receives a credit for the death benefit left to the Community Foundation in his or her Will. The charitable donation (to a limit of 100% of income in the year of death and the year preceding death) – will reduce taxes otherwise payable at death, such as capital gains arising from deemed disposition.
