Sydney greatly values the longstanding economic, cultural and civic connections that have grown between our two cities over the last 30 years. Sydney and Guangzhou are natural partners. Both are outward-looking, economically-dynamic cities with thriving services and innovation sectors.

This milestone presents a significant opportunity to promote Sydney’s global economy and world-class cultural institutions in southern China. It is also timely given the new opportunities arising from the China Australia Free Trade Agreement.

This is the first time the City has led a campaign promoting Sydney’s economy overseas, and is a collaboration with our partners: the Australia China Business Council, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the University of Sydney, University of Technology Sydney and 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art.

I am pleased that our events – a business summit, sustainability forum, alumni reunion, Sydney Symphony concert and exhibition – will provide valuable opportunities for further collaboration oneconomic issues, the green economy and cultural links.

For 30 years, a friendly relationship between the two sister cities has been strengthening with widening scope for cooperation. As a Chinese saying goes, “clear water flows from a living source” – the close and intimate economic and cultural cooperation between our two peoples has become a fountainhead of continuing partnership between the two cities. We are very pleased to learn of the incoming visit of the Lord Mayor Moore’s delegation comprised of City of Sydney officials, the business community and cultural and educational delegates. We are excited and very much looking forward to a great gathering of representatives from all walks of life from both cities, to renew our friendship and start a new chapter of cooperation in economy and culture, among many other things.

The City of Sydney’s relationship with Guangzhou is paralleled by the strong and longstanding sister state relationship between NSW and Guangdong.

NSW shares a special bond with Guangdong, which became our first sister state in 1979. Since that time, our friendship has deepened through close personal, cultural and economic ties. I look forward to new partnerships developing from this year’s anniversary celebrations.

NSW and Guangdong are the economic powerhouses of our nations, achieving the strongest economic growth rates in our countries. Both also have prosperous and beautiful capital cities, which are important nodes in the global economy.

I am proud of the leading role that Sydney plays in deepening Australia’s economic engagement with China. China is NSW’s largest trading partner and new opportunities to grow our trade and investment relationships are flowing from the China Australia Free Trade Agreement.

Of course, ties between Sydney and Guangzhou go back much further than 30 years. Chinese immigrants have been arriving in Sydney since the first half of the 19th century, and many of these immigrants came from the City of Guangzhou and its surrounding areas. They, and their descendants, have left an indelible mark on Sydney’s unique social and cultural fabric and have greatly influenced the development of Australian society. These people-to-people bonds continue today across a wide range of fields and provide the bedrock of a relationship that is underpinned by trust, goodwill and friendship.

I am excited to see that the program of events here in Guangzhou includes business, educational and cultural elements demonstrating the diversity of the Sydney Guangzhou relationship. It is an opportunity for Sydney to showcase its place as one of the leading cities in the Asia Pacific region and will help strengthen the city’s economic and investment ties to South China’s dynamic Pearl River Delta. Sydney and Guangzhou are highly complementary economies and with the entry into force of the Australia China Free Trade Agreement, the two cities will only grow closer.

The 30th anniversary of sister city relations is a celebration of Sydney and Guangzhou’s common history and a statement of ongoing commitment and friendship. I am grateful for the hard work of those who have helped make these celebrations possible and wish the event every success.

Training Young MusiciansMusic training for young musicians at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou will develop their musical knowledge and imagination.

The City of Sydney and the Guangzhou Municipal Government will host an Opening Cocktail Reception to officially launch the program. The Lord Mayor of Sydney and Mayor of Guangzhou will welcome delegates and guests at this event, followed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Opening Gala Concert.

The Opening Concert will feature orchestral works performed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and guest performers from the Xinghai Conservatory of Music.

Together three of Sydney’s most prominent universities will deliver a one-day symposium in Guangzhou that will bring together academics, government and industry to showcase their collaborative research and expertise in the area of sustainability.

This symposium showcases the best of each university’s research in the areas of water, energy and infrastructure, and demonstrates the alignment of their research with the City of Guangzhou’s development and innovation priorities.

About the participating universitiesThe University of Sydney Founded in 1850, the University of Sydney is Australia’s oldest university. The University is home to the multidisciplinary China Studies Centre, which draws on the expertise of more than 200 academics engaged in or with China, as well as the Sydney Environment Institute, which explores how we identify, live, and adapt in a changing environmental landscape. The Centre for Carbon, Water and Food, Centre for Sustainable Energy Development and Plant Breeding Institute also engage in collaborative projects that aim to find solutions to secure a sustainable future.

Its Greater China & India Strategy Team based in Sydney, supported by a group of more than ten staff in China, coordinates its China engagement across research partnerships, relationships with Chinese industry partners, government affairs and student recruitment. Sydney’s six leading universities have combined to host a special cocktail reception for their alumni in Guangzhou to celebrate this important anniversary between our two cities.

Graduates from the Australian Catholic University, Macquarie University, University of Technology Sydney, University of Sydney, UNSW Australia and Western Sydney University are invited to come together for the first time to network, make new friends and connect with colleagues and staff from these important institutions.

Each of these universities have had long and rewarding relationships with China through providing education to thousands of students either in Australia or China as well as through strategic research and industry partnerships. These valuable links continue to strengthen our ties and bring great mutual benefit to our countries.

The many thousands of Chinese graduates who studied through university in Sydney over the last three decades are now making a significant mark in many professions and industries. It is these alumni who are helping to build and foster our bi-lateral relationship and build the future in business, education and the community.

This exclusive event is an opportunity for alumni to meet and share knowledge and interests and to grow stronger links between our two cities.

The China Australia Free Trade Agreement, signed in 2015, provides new opportunities to deepen our economic relationship.

To coincide with the 30th anniversary of the sister city relationship between the City of Sydney and the City of Guangzhou, the Australia China Business Council is hosting a full-day summit in Guangzhou to provide Sydney and Guangzhou businesses with the opportunity to forge meaningful business partnerships.

Hosting around 240 attendees from both cities, the conference will highlight strengths and synergies between the cities and assist businesses in exploring opportunities for new partnerships in trade and investment.

Drawing on successful business case studies and featuring expert panel discussions, the summit will demonstrate how trade between the two cities can increase global competiveness.

The conference will be organised into three themes:

Green: sustainable business practices and opportunities for partnerships with products and services supporting sustainability

Global: the City of Sydney and the City of Guangzhou’s roles as global hubs for business, trade and investment

Connected: a business matching session for City of Sydney and City of Guangzhou businesses.

About the Australia China Business Council (ACBC)Founded in 1973 the Australia China Business Council is the premier organisation promoting two-way trade, investment and economic cooperation between Australia and China’s business communities.

The ACBC also plays an influential role as an advisor to the Australian Government on commercial relations with China.

The ACBC has close links with expatriate groups in China as well as with Chinese groups and officials.

From time-to-time the ACBC leads trade missions to China.

A collaboration between contemporary art spaces Observation Society and 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Trial Observations presents new works exploring trade and migration between the two cities.

Since conducting fieldwork in the unique community that surrounds the Observation Society in Guangzhou’s central island district of Haizhu, Australian artist Lucas Ihlein and Chinese artist Trevor Yeung have engaged in six months of conversation and research to create a series of works for the exhibition Trial Observations.

Ihlein and Yeung investigate how trade and migration informs the built environment and explore how digital technologies change our relationship with the natural environment by mapping and re-imagining the systems that inform our urban experience in the 21st century.

With artistic collaboration between individuals, organisations and cities at its heart, Trial Observations builds on links between the cities while forging new dialogues that reflect our shared local, regional and global experience.

Australia and China share a golden history that goes back to the Gold Rush in 1851 when thousands of Chinese miners migrated to the land they called “New Gold Mountain”. From the very beginning, Westpac – Australia’s first bank and oldest company – has been there. Since we welcomed our first Chinese customer, Quong Tart, Westpac has continued to strengthen its connection with China. Now, almost 200 years later Westpac has local teams on the mainland, offices in Hong Kong, Australasia’s first Chinese Renminbi hub, and Asian Exchange scholarships through our Bicentennial Foundation, designed to foster cross-cultural understanding and collaboration.

We have a history built on deep respect and a desire for mutual prosperity and believe we have much to learn from each other and much to share. This year we celebrate a 30 year connection with Guangzhou, sister city with Sydney. Like Sydney, the birthplace of Westpac, Guangzhou is a centre of industry, and like Sydney, it is also a port city.
