Summer is ending, fall is upon us
and the Snow Birds will be heading
back. Hopefully they will notice all the
work that has been done around the
Lodge.
The outside sign is finally complete
with the addition of the lettering, a
hearty thanks goes to all who contribute.
I would like to extend my
sympathies to Sheila Hill and her family
on the passing of Charlie, who was a
charter member of this Lodge and a very
respected member.
The State President’s visitation went
wonderfully and I would like to thank
all who helped make it a success,
without these volunteers we would not
have been able to accomplish this. I
would especially like to thank Tom
Coleman, Zuzuana Korner, Allison
Allison and Ray Warren for the help
they gave our new chef that night.
On that note, I would like all of you
who have not had the opportunity to
meet her and try her cooking to stop by,
say hello, and enjoy lunch or dinner. Her
name is Tes Smith and she is doing
lunches Wednesday thru Saturday from
12P.M. till 2 P.M. and dinners
Wednesday thru Saturday and breakfast
on Sunday morning.
A big thanks to Peggy Bertoli for all
the time she puts into the office and to
Loretta for being there when Peggy had
knee surgery.
Please check out our new website at
Elks2723.com, Tony Sperduti has been
working very hard on this and would
appreciate any insight you give for
improvement and also pictures to post.
Make sure to continue reading the
weekly updates so you can see what is
happening in the Lodge.
Don’t forget Port Orange Family
Days October 3 to 6, 2013, we will be
having the Drug Awareness Trailer there
again and will be needing volunteers to
man it.

Exalted Ruler
On Thursday, September 19th, a group from our lodge took a bus trip to the Florida Elks Youth Camp (FEYC) in Umatilla,
FL. The Eustis Lodge opened their arms to make us feel welcome and gave us a great tour of the camp.
The Florida Elks Youth Camp is dedicated to enriching the lives of children from the state of Florida. FEYC is located on
405 acres of rolling hills, forests, lakes and open space and is accredited by the American Camping Association. The camp is
recertified every three years to assure compliance and a safe camping environment for children. The camp is available to all
children of Florida and offers them countless opportunities in each camper’s mental, physical and social growth. This camp
has become one of the finest of its kind in the country.
We had the privilege of having the Florida State President, Brian Burns and his wife, Mary Kay visit with us on September 7, 2013. During this visit, George Brennan was presented by President Burns, the East Central District-Elk of the Year award.
Following is an excerpt from the letter written by Exalted Ruler, Jerry recommending George for this Special Recognition Award.
George was initiated into Port Orange Elks Lodge 2723 on October 18, 2005. Since that time, he’s been a Trustee and also worked on the Bingo Committee for a few years. In addition, he was and still is on the work detail. He is always there for Meals-on-Wheels every holiday. On August 3, 2010, he was accepted and given an Honorable Life Membership. In work detail, most of his work is behind the scene and most members don’t see all the work that he does, but those who do, know George to always be willing to give a helping hand no matter what time of day or night. He is always there for anyone who needs him. When George enters the Lodge, within five minutes, there is someone asking him to do something and he willingly does it no matter what the request is. Also, when he sees something that needs to be done, he does it. He doesn’t have to be asked. When different Elk members need volunteers for a project of some sore, George is the first name that comes to their mind. He goes way above and beyond helping people. George is a good and faithful Elk and he truly loves his Lodge.
Congratulations George! Well Deserved!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Our new cook, Tes, is doing a wonder-
ful job and the food is excellent. With
more of our member coming in for din-
ner, it has become necessary to ask for
volunteers to help with serving and in
the kitchen. As all of you know, getting
meals to the table in a timely manner is
very important. I am not asking some-
one to come in every week, but if you
could just give us one day a month, it
would be a tremendous help. We need
your support to keep the kitchen going.
We still serve meals every Thursday,
Friday and Saturday evenings and on
Sunday mornings, so any day you can
help would be welcomed. There will be
a list on the board near the kitchen.
Please do what you can to help.
Thanks again. Jerry Peterson
September, two hundred twenty six years ago, a group of delegates from the twelve states drafted and
signed the Constitution and presented it to the thirteen states for ratification in 1787.
It was in America that the Founding Fathers under the direction of Gen. George Washington assembled the
28 great ideas that produced the dynamic success formula which proved such a sensational blessing to modern
man.
Of course, we should not forget that it took the Founders 180 years (1607-1787) to put it all together. Numer-
ous mistakes were made along the way. Never less when they finally put the new charter into operation,
George Washington was able to write after only two years in practice…
“The United States enjoy a scene of prosperity and tranquility
under the new government that could hardly been hoped for.”
Not only had it changed the United States, but within a few years it aroused the admiration of the whole
world. The American Revolutionary War did not commence as a war for independence but was originally de-
signed to protect the rights of the people from the arrogant oppression of the tyrannical king. By the spring of
1776, it was becoming apparent that a complete separation from Great Britain was the only solution.
The Constitution was written and ratified by an “act of the whole American people,” as Thomas Jefferson
declared in 1802. It’s purpose is to, “Secure the blessings of Liberty to our posterity.” To secure that liberty,
“governments were instituted among men”, not over them and “derived their just powers from the consent of
the governed.”
Our Founders gave us a government dependent upon our consent, not the will of the Supreme Court, the
Congress, or the President. Our Founders knew that since Liberty belonged to us, we would be the only ones
suited to determine when, “any form of government became destructive of those ends.”
