WELCOME
Baasil is delighted to be back at Magna this March for the 25thRotherham Real Ale and Music Festival.
The theme this year is obviously to celebrate our 25th Anniversary butwe have several new attractions! For the first time ever we have CraftKeg beers and a Prosecco Cocktail Bar. We have also looked back overthe years and picked the best of the Champion Beers of Yorkshire andcombined them on the Jim Charters Champions Bar.
John Hyslop has booked the best and most popular acts from over theyears so the music will be fabulous as well.
As well as all this we have the usual bars, wine, cider and bottled beers, excellent food from the Magna kitchens and our t-shirt and food stalls.
Many thanks to all our volunteers and sponsors and to the staff atMagna and we look forward to another successful Festival and to raisingmore money for our chosen charities, the main one being MaplesCancer Care, the new name for Rotherham Cancer Care Charity.
I sincerely hope everyone enjoys their visit to the ‘Best party in town’.

INFORMATIONBAR OPENING TIMES
THURSDAY 6pm - 11pmFRIDAY 6pm - 11pmSATURDAY 12noon - 11pmDrinks token refunds up to the value of £10 are available until 11:20 at the Main Exit.
REMEMBER!Keep your 2018 Festival glass and you can use it to get FREE re-entry to the Festivalon Saturday. Please note NO re-entry on Friday.
You will need to purchase drink tokens. We have held the price at £1.50 with drinksserved in a special lined oversized festival glass ensuring no short measures here!Look out for the tasting notes in this guide or behind the bars, which provide detailsabout the style, type and strength of drink. Some of the stronger drinks may have asmall additional charge. We recommend starting with drinks that contain the least amount of alcohol. Whenyou start drinking your palate is fresh and so more sensitive to the delicate and lighterflavours. Starting with the strong and heavier drinks can make it difficult to appreciatethe more subtle flavours later in the evening. Please treat all drinks with respect.
All ales featured in the festival are arranged in different rooms by region and can befound using the map on the centre pages of this guide.
Remember eating will help soak up the alcohol. Freshly cooked food provided by theMagna catering staff is available in both the Red Hall and in the Yorkshire Main Hall.
SAFETY INFORMATIONIn the event of a fire emergency, the alarm will sound.Evacuate through the designated emergency exits to the nearest fire assembly pointas shown on the centre pages of this brochure.Follow any instructions given to you by Festival and Security staff. Do not attempt tofight any fires - leave this to the experts, The Fire and Rescue Service.
Don't forget to have a bit of fun at the CAMRA stand on the tombola and check outthe great money saving offers if you join CAMRA here!
Please drink responsibly and remember all our staff are volunteers and treat themwith the respect they deserve. The festival operates a zero tolerance policy tothreatening or abusive behaviour.
Above all, enjoy yourself!

People affected by cancer have individual needs that cannot always be fully addressed by their health care providers and social networks. We offer a place for people to go to talk, relax and someone to help them deal with the way cancer has affected them and their life.
We provide emotional and physical support through assessment, counselling and complementary therapies, to help people feel more in control, more confident and moreable to cope.
People have the chance to talk in confidence and to have a programme of therapy to help them face the impact of a cancer diagnosis. People may also need to regain control of their situation to improve their quality of life, but do not know where to turn for help.
Maples Cancer Care can offer this help both to those who have received a diagnosis of cancer and also for their main carer. We will see people at any stage of illness or if they have ongoing concerns that are unresolved, even if this is many years later.
The service is free to anyone who needs our support. Carers are welcome even if the patient is not attending the Centre.
Your first visit to the Centre will be to meet with a dedicated professional, your assessor, who will listen to your concerns and help you make sense of your thoughts.Together, you will look at how we might best support you.

HOW TO BE A BEER TASTING EXPERTWhat is beer?Beer is simply fermented, but notdistilled, extract of grain. In this countrythe majority of beer is made from barley. One difference from other alcoholic drinksis that in grains the sugar is stored asstarch. The starch has to be broken downby malting before fermentation can occur. The flavours in beer come from;● Malt Pale through to black● Adjuncts Added sugars or other
starch sources● Hops Bitterness and aroma● Water Ionic composition and pH● Yeast Around 5% of the flavour
Combining these in differing proportionsgives the various styles of beer.
Styles of Beer
Milds range from black to dark brown topale amber in colour. Malty and possiblysweet tones dominate the flavour profilebut there may be a light hop flavour oraroma. Alcohol levels are typically low.Pale milds have a lightly fruity aromaand gentle hoppiness.Dark milds may have a light roast maltor caramel character in aroma and taste.
Ordinary bitters are typically brown, tawny, copper, or amber but can bepaler. They have medium to strongbitterness, light to medium body and alight to medium malt character may bepresent. Hop character should be evident.Fruit should be light and not distract fromhop character, although citrus fruit tastesare associated with some hop varieties.
Best bitters are more robust thanordinary bitters. They are typically brown, tawny, copper, or amber but can bepaler. They have medium to strongbitterness, light to medium body but witha more evident residual maltiness. Astrong hop character should be evident.Fruit should be limited, although citrusfruit tastes are associated with some hopvarieties.
Strong bitters are full bodied andpossess assertive hop qualities. They aretypically brown, tawny, copper, or amberbut can be paler. They have medium tostrong bitterness. Residual maltiness maybe more pronounced than in other bitters.Fruitiness may be medium to strong andcan be estery.
Golden ales are pale amber, gold, yellow or straw coloured with powerfularoma hop, low to strong bitterness, lightto medium body and a strong hopcharacter, often with citrus fruit tastescreating a refreshing character. Thereshould be little or no malt character ordiacetyl (toffee/butterscotch).
Speciality beers are less specific thanstandard British cask beer styles and maybe produced using one or more novelingredients including fruits, herbs, honey, cereals other than malted barley andflowers other than hops. The categoryincludes cask-conditioned lagers, wheatbeers and fruit beers. There are nospecific guidelines for this category.

HOW TO BE A BEER TASTING EXPERT Examples of groupings within this styleare:● Wheat beers are often dry and
refreshing and may be served cloudywith yeast and/or protein haze.
● Herb beers produced with little orno hop and evident flavour of addedherbs, either singly or in combination. Are often malty and strong in body orfloral and light.
● Spice beers produced with theaddition of spices such as ginger andcoriander. In some cases these canbe extreme and dominate thecharacter of the beer.
Porters are complex in flavour and aretypically black or dark brown. Thedarkness comes from the use of darkmalts, unlike stouts, which use roastedbarley. Porters should have a fullmouthfeel and a pronounced finishthrough bitter hopping
Stouts are typically black.Dry stouts have an initial malt andcaramel flavour with a distinctive dryroast bitterness in the finish. The dryroast character is achieved by use ofroasted barley. Some astringency and amedium to rich mouthfeel areappropriate.Imperial Russian stouts can havesome or all of these characteristics withmore intensity and much higher originalgravities and alcohol levels than otherstouts.Sweet stouts are distinctively sweet intaste and aftertaste through the use oflactose.
TASTING PROCEDURE
AppearanceConsider colour, clarity, condition.AromaCover top of glass and swirl beer aroundto generate and capture aroma.Take a deep sniff and note aromas.Consider hop, malt and fruity aromas.TasteSwill the beer over the entire area of yourtongue. Different parts of the tonguedetect different types of flavour.Consider the balance of hop, malt andfruity flavours, sweetness and bitterness.AftertasteSwallow and note aftertaste.Consider the taste remaining half aminute or so after swallowing the beer. Itwill often comprise dry, bitter flavours atthe back of the tongue, and hoppy and/orfruity flavours may also linger.
In each category, consider whether this isappealing to you and is what you wouldexpect for that style of beer.
But crucially, does it make you wantanother?
Why not try different styles, particularly ifyou’ve not tried them before. Don't beafraid to ask for a trial sample if you’renot sure if you’d like it. A beer festival is agreat opportunity for experimenting.
Most importantly - enjoy yourself.
Cheers!
