  • City Fruit is SHARING

  • In 2018, City Fruit members, donors, volunteers, and tree owners celebrated our 10th year of collecting and sharing Seattle’s incredible abundance of fruit! The generosity of our donors and funders drove our largest and most exciting growth to date – we grew to serve ALL of Seattle and expanded into South King County via our partnership with the International Rescue Committee.

46,758 lbs of fruit harvested in total 8,180 lbs of fruit harvested from public orchards24,099 lbs of fruit donated to meal programs & food banks2,659 lbs of fruit sold 29 Community partners who received fruit415 Tree owners participating in the annual harvest597 Total number of harvests450 lbs - largest harvest from a single tree380 lbs - largest harvest from a public orchard tree (a winter banana at Meridian Orchard) $30,123.75 - value of fruit donated to meal programs & food banks 163 Harvest Boxes requested at 72 different residences

South King County Expansion – a model for a more participatory harvestOver the past two years, we have explored an expansion into South King County, via our partnership with the International Rescue Committee (IRC). This partnership allows us to train refugee gardeners with the IRC to coordinate residential harvests. The harvesters then decide for themselves and for their community how to put the fruit to its best and fullest use, either by sharing it with their neighbors or developing value-added products. This partnership represents an opportunity to explore other ways in which the value of the harvest can be more directly designed by the community itself.

Many thanks to our grant funders & corporate partners for their support of the Great Seattle Fruit Harvest

  • City Fruit is SERVICE

  • Our volunteers showed up in a big way in 2018! We hosted more than 900 volunteers through 141 volunteer activities. Thanks to feedback from our supporters, we also made a big shift in the design of our volunteer activities, by integrating free education and workshops into our work parties so that volunteers could build skills while offering service to the public orchards. This resulted in a more engaged volunteer base and more direct service of Seattle’s public fruit trees.

910 volunteers contributed 2069 hours via 141 volunteer activities$51,083 - value of volunteer labor 325 hours dedicated to pruning public fruit trees13 new Master Fruit Tree Steward graduates8 Harvest Hubs with 53 participants3 hardy volunteers even watered trees throughout the summer at the Amy Yee Tennis Center orchard and the Burke-Gilman Trail.

    Master Fruit Tree Stewards:

City Fruit’s Master Fruit Tree Stewardship program prepares community members to grow, cultivate and care for fruit trees in the greater Seattle community. This series of workshops combines classroom and urban orchard experiences to gain skills in identifying, planting, pruning, harvesting and sharing fruit from local fruit trees.

  • Save Seattle’s Apples

Unfortunately, pest damage is an increasing concern with Seattle’s fruit trees. Without protection, locally grown apples and pears are at high risk of damage from apple maggot fly and codling moth, invasive pests in the PNW. In addition, we are seeing a concerning increase in the number of trees affected by leafroller moths. The netting used to prevent codling moth and apple maggot damage is not effective against leafrollers, as they overwinter in the bark of the tree and emerge when the leaves open up, much earlier than codling moths or apple maggot flies. Leafrollers chew on developing tiny fruit, and a second-generation chews on fruit as it is ripening. The damage does not go to the core of the apple, but it can be extremely disfiguring.

In an effort to combat this increasing threat, in 2018 City Fruit launched our fourth year of Save Seattle’s Apples – a campaign to increase awareness of and protection against fruit tree pests. Many thanks to the tree owners who bagged their apples or netted their trees – this extra step can dramatically increase the quality of the fruit!

20,000 pest prevention bags distributed within the community63 public trees netted through Save Seattle’s Apples during 17 netting work parties2 P-Patches, Queen Anne and Interbay, netted apple trees for the first time2 retailers, Swanson’s and Magnolia Garden Center, sold netting by the foot

    OUR SSA CASE STUDY

This year, a team of volunteers and staff conducted a case study analysis of the effectiveness of various nets on protecting against pest damage.

•11,652 apples were examined for pest damage during netting study

We will use the results of this study to inform the recommendations for our 2019 Save Seattle’s Apples campaign.

  • City Fruit is ACCESS

  • Since 2016, City Fruit’s has offered a transformative experience for historically marginalized youth, by offering experiential learning on orchards and fruit trees to more strongly connect them to their community’s land, food, people, and place. In 2018, we went deeper into these connections through our Harvest Crew, which integrated professional and leadership development in order to more strongly connect underserved youth and youth of color to environmental resources and opportunities.

168 students participated in Harvest Clubs, which offered hands-on learning on Seattle’s fruit and orchards28 students trained through 3 Harvest Crew programs1 youth harvester hired through the City of Seattle’s SYEP program20 students certified as Master Fruit Tree Stewards, in our Harvest Crew program partnership with Unleash the Brilliance (UtB) and Walk Away City Collaborative (WACC)60 trees at 6 public orchards received direct stewardship from Harvest Crew students: Piper’s Orchard, Rainier Beach Urban Farm, Marra Farms, Maple Playfield, Meadowbrook Orchard, Miller Community Center.

MEMBERSHIP REDESIGNED TO SHARE SEATTLE’S HARVEST

In 2018, we re-launched our Membership program with the goal to share the harvest with even more neighbors across the city. The resulting growth was unprecedented for City Fruit! We will continue to increase member benefits and create alternative pathways to membership, so that we can continue to build a program that represents the diversity of Seattle’s communities!

    • 399 members

    • 4 Fruit for All Pop-ups

    • Tree owners stepped up big time in 2018. They represented ¾ of our members.

    • Multiple members were so excited about the new program that they gifted memberships to friends and even to the SE Seattle Senior Center, where one of the members volunteers
