Celebrate The Macleay                      Kempsey  High  School will  host  this  year’s  Celebrate  the Macleay  on  Sunday  4th.  August 2013. Local businesses will be showcasing their products and services. A range of teaching demonstrations, interactive learning workshops and seminars for parents about supporting their  children’s  learning  will  be  held  (see  pages  3‐6).  Numerous  displays,  student performances, an art exhibition and the new  facilities  including the Marine Studies Centre and  Agriculture  Farm  will  be  on  show.  Several  amusements  will  be  there  including  the standing  bungee,  jumping  castle  and  rock  climbing  wall.    Helicopter  joy  flights  will  be operating and there will be a raffle to win one of three 3‐person joy flights. The Red Onion Cafe and the Canteen will operate all day.  Celebrate concludes with The Ultimate Pink Show in the hall from 4pm to 7pm.  $15 Tickets are available at the Argus Office or Kempsey High School.

Matsushige Students Visit  

  The  annual  visit  by  students  from Matsushige  Junior  High  School,  Japan takes  place  this  week.  Twenty  students will  arrive  on Wednesday  afternoon  31st. July and stay with ten of our families until Sunday.   The  visit  will  once  again  be  our opportunity  to  return  the  gracious hospitality  extended  to  our  students  and staff  from  past  visits  to Matsushige. Our visitors will learn about the Australian way of life by experiencing it first hand. During their stay, excursions will be organised  to Sea Acres and the Koala Hospital.   A highlight of  the visit will be  the  singing of  Advance  Australia  Fair  by  the  visitors after  the  school  choir,  Indigo  Velvet  sing the  Japanese National Anthem. After  the formal  assembly  on  Friday,  the  students will dance the Awa (Friendship) Dance for students at Aldavilla Public School.

Author visit: Simon French Author Simon French spoke with students about  his  writing  process  and  how  to prepare  pieces  of  creative  writing.  He offered  a  host  of  useful  suggestions including  the building of  character banks.  Simon brought  along  illustrations  created by Donna Rawlins whose works  are  used in many  children’s books. Students  learnt a  great  deal  and  this will  be  particularly useful  in  the  Advanced  English  courses and  the  eMates  program.    After  sharing online  in  past  years  with  students  from Canada  and  Britain,  this  year,  eMates students  are  sharing  writing  about  their reading with students from Germany.  

                 

 

  

   

Targeted Sports Program 

 

Up  to 20 Year 7 and 8 boys have been  selected  in  the Targeted Sports Program, a  rugby league  based  initiative  that  promotes  respect,  responsibility,  commitment  and  positive behaviour.    Students  participate  in  the  program  for  a  total  of  80minutes  per week  and engage in a variety sporting based excursions.  

The program  focuses on skill development, conditioning, game play, coaching, excellence, discipline, nutrition, team work, goal setting and academic achievement. Students need to meet high behaviour standards to keep  their place. The program aims to  lift engagement with  school  and  the  community, motivation,  behaviour,  attendance,  attitude  and  social skills.  A  range  of  qualities will  be  developed  including  respect,  responsibility,  resilience, right decisions, fairness, commitment and cooperation.  Students will be receiving a training tee shirt and shorts to wear on training days, game days and on excursions.  

The boys have been training hard and have proven they belong in the squad. The students participate  in a wide range of extracurricular sporting based activities. Recently the squad went  on  an  excursion  to  Port Macquarie where  they  played  hydro  golf,  raced  go  karts, competed in laser tag and cooked a sausage sizzle lunch. All students had a great time and were  excellent  ambassadors  for  Kempsey  High.  We  look  forward  to  our  proposed Newcastle Knight NRL excursion during Term 3.
