October 2017 VOICE No. 14 We’re having a party! On Sunday October 15 th from 2.30pm we’re celebrating the Farnham Flash Festival by having a party. It’s your opportunity to meet your colleagues, to demonstrate your performance art and also to join us in a glass of wine or a cup of coffee and a nibble or two. Sounds Fun? That’s the plan! At the end of June we weren’t able to run a Get Together for all performers as many had gone on holiday by then. So we hope that in mid October there’ll be plenty of people keen to come along and display a short performance of their art. It’ll be a great opportunity to see so many of you in the one place. Bring along some food and maybe a bottle of something you like if you wish. It’s a self-help party where we all contribute. That’s the ethos of Performers Together of course so it should be good! We’ll be at the Daniel Hall in the centre of Farnham. It’s the base of the 3 rd Farnham Scout group and very close to the Waitrose carpark - which is free on a Sunday. Please let us know by email if you are able to join us on this day and if you’d like to perform a piece or two. Please let us know if you are coming along to: https://goo.gl/forms/UCinyjGs8OjlpH2A3 or simply email your reply to this newsletter. Of course any Get Together is also a great place to meet to discuss any issues that you may have and to air any concerns generally about putting on performances. There are still some folk out there who haven’t yet graced us with their company; we’d love to see you. Remember, you don’t have to be a member of Performers Together to come to these Get Togethers although of course we’d like to think that you’ll consider joining us if you like what you see and share our vision and aims. Just a reminder – we will be running our brief AGM, intended to take no more than 10 minutes, ahead of this Get Together. Where is it again? Daniel Hall, Long Garden Walk, Farnham GU9 7HX. VOICE

October 2017 VOICE No. 14

Hart Male Voice Choir picked a real winner and she stole she show.

In 2014, Milly Forrest was the winner of Hart Male VoIce Choir’s young singer competition; lucky audience members at that concert heard her remarkable voice. Now she has won national acclaim for her ‘stand-in’ performance at London’s Wigmore Hall. Working as an usher she hardly expected to be called upon to step in for a professional soprano who was taken ill and became unable to perform.

Milly, a 23-year-old music student who regularly worked evenings at Britain’s leading chamber music venue is now being seen as a future star after she

successfully took to the stage at the last minute. Performing ensemble works by Franz Schubert and Ralph Vaughan Williams, Milly enthralled the audience with her “exquisite performance” and received rave reviews in the media. One national newspaper described her performance as “breathtaking” with a voice that “floated heavenwards”.

Milly Is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and says that her lifetime ambition has always been “to sing at one of the big opera house stages”. Having by chance caught her singing performance on TV we can attest to her outstanding vocal quality. What a pleasure it was to hear her! We wish her every success.

Hart MVC are now on the lookout for new prospective stars for their 2019 Young Singer Competition. See their website for fuller details including the age range within each group. Or, contact Peter Newman on 01252 614151 for more information.

Shows you have just missed!

Gritty and dynamic, full of colour, dance and brilliant singing, this drama leapt off the stage to entrance the audience. ……………………

Rotten Perfect by Claire Parker

At the Watts Gallery, Compton, ran from 29th September to 1st October.

Presented by Artifice and directed by Kate Napier

There’s a brilliant show that ran in late September from Cody Musical Theatre Company. Made in Dagenham told the story of women who changed UK law back in the 1960's. Their story held the giant Ford motor company to ransom. This funny, touching and timeless story showed how ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things when they stand together.

Artifice’s new production was a play about the partnership between two giants of the Victorian Stage: Henry Irving and Ellen Terry.

It’s securely based in factual research and also features Alice Comyns Carr – wardrobe mistress and costume guru. There’s a fictional ambitious young actor, too and the revolutionary voice of George Bernard Shaw.

It’s a fascinating insight into the dynamics and difficulties of making theatre work at the highest level of the day. Conflict and humour abound.

This clever play was staged in the Watts Gallery, housing much of GF Watts‘ work and was an intriguing touch as he was married at one time to the very young Ellen Terry. This production was part of the year-long celebration of G.F. Watts 200th birthday.
