Shropshire

Welcome to the Shropshire Registration and Celebratory Services guide to ceremonies in Shropshire.

In our guide, you’ll find information about naming ceremonies, getting married or forming a civil partnership as well as details on related services and other ceremonies. We will guide you through the legal formalities and you’ll also find information about Shropshire’s Registration Office and other venues licensed for marriage or civil partnership in Shropshire.

Welcome to our beautiful county. We are thrilled that you have chosen Shropshire as the place to celebrate your special day.

Shropshire is recognised as an incredibly beautiful county, the largest inland county in England, no less.

The county is steeped in a rich and fascinating history, playing its parts in the ‘Wars of the Roses’ and has been fought over in the North by the Welsh and English. Our county has hosted the English parliament and is rich in heritage left by the Romans, not to mention its association with the modern Olympic Games. Some even believe that the court of Camelot was in Shropshire.

We are pleased to be able to offer a wide choice of attractive venues in beautiful locations for ceremonies. Shropshire is home to some stunning scenery, set on a backcloth of patchwork fields, wooded valleys, picturesque rivers and rolling hills leading into the Welsh mountains.

We are sure that you will find the perfect place to celebrate your special day in Shropshire.

Whatever you envisage, a simple, intimate affair or a splendid gala occasion, we want to ensure that your special day is all that you want it to be. We want your celebration to run smoothly and successfully and leave you with memories to treasure.

We hope this guide will answer all your questions but if you have any others, we will be pleased to answer them. Alternatively please do see our web site at www.shropshire.gov.uk/registrar.nsf or call us on 0345 678 9016.

We look forward to sharing with you the joy and happiness on your special day.

If you can read this but know someone who can’t, please contact us on 0345 678 9016 so that we can provide this information in a more suitable format such as large print, Braille or audio, or translate into another language.

Our naming ceremonies are warm and happy occasions, unique to individual families.

A civil naming ceremony provides the perfect opportunity for a child or new born to be welcomed into a family. This ceremony can be used by step-families or for adopted children. The idea is to mark a rite of passage of the parents and the child, to acknowledge a change in responsibilities for new parents, and to give grandparents and other adults or siblings the opportunity to pledge their support to all.

A naming ceremony is not a religious ceremony and like a christening has no legal standing. The naming ceremony can include readings, music, promises by parents, grandparents, sisters and brothers and other adults who will play important roles in the life of the child. It is truly a family occasion.

Shown below is the usual format of a naming ceremony, although this format can be changed to suit:

Opening WordsReadingNaming of the childParents promises to the childPromises of chosen adultsPromises of GrandparentsSigning of the Ceremony recordPresentation of the certificateClosing words

Some popular readings used at naming ceremonies can be found on page 15 to assist you in making your selections.

Ceremonies can be held at any of the ceremony rooms around the county and in any of the approved venues, it may be possible to hold them in other venues subject to an appropriate risk assessment. This may incur an additional cost.

Congratulations!

You’ve made one of the most important decisions you’ll ever have to make – you’re getting married or forming a civil partnership.

Whether you are planning a small, quiet ceremony or a larger celebration we can promise you a special day. We understand how important it is that your ceremony is personal to you and if your ceremony is being held at an approved venue, it is possible to enhance your ceremony with readings and music and even personalise the ceremony by adding personal vows. We will work with you, within our legal boundaries, to make your ceremony as individual as you are.

We will also ensure your marriage or civil partnership is carried out in accordance with the law and will guide you through the legal formalities before and on the day of your marriage or civil partnership.

Legal RequirementsThings you need to know

In order to be married or form a civil partnership there are a number of legal requirements which must be observed. These requirements will vary dependent on where the marriage or civil partnership is to take place.

It is vital that one of the first decisions which you should make is where the ceremony will take place, as the place of marriage will determine under which piece of legislation the marriage or civil partnership will fit, if any.

Preliminaries for civil marriage and civil partnership are similar, they require the couple to “give notice” (the civil equivalent of Banns for a religious ceremony) Under normal circumstances notice can only be given within 12 months but no later than 15 clear days before the date of the ceremony.

Immigration Requirements

Where neither party is subject to immigration control: Each party to the marriage or civil partnership should arrange to give notice to the registration service for the district in which they live.

Where one party or both parties are subject to immigration control: Both parties must attend together at a “Designated” Register Office (full list available at www.gov.uk.)

When giving notice each party must provide evidence of the following:

Name

Age

Nationality

The best document to produce to confirm all of the above is a current passport. An expired passport is not usually acceptable.

If you do not have a current passport, guidance should be sought from the Registration Service.

Your Marital Status

If either party have previously been married or in a civil partnership, it is necessary to provide evidence of the marriage or civil partnership ending either by death, divorce or decree of nullity.

Death of former spouse – Produce a certified copy of the death certificate.

Divorce – Produce a decree absolute bearing the original seal of the court (a coloured stamp)

Decree of Nullity – Produce the document issued by the court bearing its original seal (a coloured stamp)

Dissolution - (Civil Partnerships) Produce the Dissolution document bearing the original seal of the issuing court (a coloured stamp).

Residency

You will be asked to provide evidence to show that you have lived at your current address for more than 7 days. This can be either:

Utility Bill, Bank Statement or Council Tax Bill issued within the 3 month period immediately before giving notice.

A British driving licence.

If you cannot supply any of the above, seek guidance from the Registration Service.

Page 8: Celebrate in Shropshire 2013

Important points:

• Make sure you know where your marriage or civil partnership will be taking place before giving notice

• If you are intending for your ceremony or formation to take place in an approved venue or a register office outside your district of residence, you will need to have checked the availability of the venue and the registration service who will attend at the ceremony before giving notice

• A fee is charged for the giving of notices and this fee is set by the Government. A complete list of fees and charges for Shropshire Registration Service can be found by visiting www.shropshire.gov.uk

• For a marriage ceremony to be legal, certain words have to be said, however, where the ceremony is taking place at one of our approved venues, it is possible to include personal vows or even have a bespoke ceremony. For couples interested in this option please contact the Registration Service.

• Couples where one or both parties are subject to immigration control have to give notice at a special register office called a “Designated Register Office” full list is available by visiting www.gov.uk. Couples not subject to immigration control should give notice to the registrar for the district in which they live. Most registration offices will require that you make an appointment to give notice. If you reside in the Shropshire Council area you may make an appointment to give notice of marriage by calling 0345 678 9016 or online by visiting www.shropshire.gov.uk

• If either party is under 18 years of age, consent may be required – please contact the Registration Service for clarification

• Notices have to be given in person – No one can give notice on behalf of any other person

• Any inclusion in a ceremony cannot be religious and inclusions are allowed at the discretion of the Superintendant Registrar who is responsible for ensuring that you have a valid marriage or civil partnership.

We will guide you through the legal requirements to ensure everything is within the law and make sure your ceremony is a truly happy and memorable occasion.

Religious venues

The law is different if you want to hold your civil partnership or marriage in a religious building. It is not possible to have a legal civil partnership in a Church of England Church. Civil partnerships and marriages can take place in churches but these have to be registered or licensed for this purpose. It does not follow that if you can marry in an individual church that a civil partnership could also take place. If you have any queries about this please contact us. If you are having a marriage or a civil partnership in a religious place of worship for any faith other than Church of England it is important to speak to the registration service before making your arrangements, as there are a number of conditions that have to be satisfied before a marriage or civil partnership takes place. It will not always be easy to marry in a church which is not in the place where you live. You will always need to speak with the registration service should you be marrying or having a civil partnership in a religious building of any faith other than Church of England. If you are planning to marry in a Church of England building you may not need to speak to the registration service at all. Your vicar may, under certain circumstances, request that you do give notice with the registration service instead of having the Banns read, however he or she will tell you if this is their intention.

We always remember that every ceremony will be a unique event. You’ve probably already made plans and have many ideas on how your ceremony will be part of the best day of your life.

We will look after every detail of your ceremony making sure that it becomes a memorable family occasion.

Ceremonies at Shropshire’s Registration Offices

In Shropshire we have ceremony rooms at our Registration Offices throughout the county, including Ludlow, Oswestry, Bridgnorth, Wem and Bishops Castle, as well as the main register office in Shrewsbury. All our ceremony rooms are tastefully decorated and can be viewed at www.shropshire.gov.uk/registrar

It is not usually possible to have enhanced ceremonies due to time restraints in the registration offices. Those couples having civil partnership formations can decide whether they would like a ceremony or not, as this is not compulsory.

Ceremonies at Approved Venues

In Shropshire, we have a wealth of beautiful venues approved for marriages and civil partnerships from Castles and Stately Homes, to Country pubs and Cricket Clubs. We are confident that there will be a venue suitable for all tastes and budgets.

booking your venueWe will accept provisional bookings up to 2 years in advance of the

intended ceremony. A non refundable booking fee is required to reserve a date for a ceremony more than 12 months and up to 2 years in the

future. This fee is completely separate from any other fee which may be required by the Registration Service.

If you are booking a ceremony within 12 months of the date, a non refundable deposit will be required at the time of booking, this fee is deductable from the

ceremony fee which the Registration Service will charge.

At present enquiries regarding availability of our teams for ceremonies have to be done by e-mail, in person or by telephone – all of the contact

information is available at the back of this publication.

All couples having ceremonies at an Approved Venue are encouraged to personalise their ceremonies by including readings and music.

A selection of readings and poems are included in this brochure to help you with your choices.

An inclusion in a ceremony cannot be religious and inclusions are at the discretion of the Superintendent Registrar who is responsible for

ensuring that you have a valid marriage or civil partnership.

If you would like to order confetti to be placed on the seats of your guests prior to the ceremony taking place, or would like a

commemorative certificate for witnesses or other participants to mark the occasion the registration service can also arrange this for you.

www.shropshire.gov.uk/premisesforcivilceremonies

We know how exciting and nervous you can be on your special day. Do not worry, we will look after you, and tell you what you need to do and say as the ceremony goes along.

There is nothing for you to remember to do on your own. You will never be asked to repeat large numbers of words; we will break down the sections into small bite size pieces and help you all the way through.

The following are examples of ceremony itineraries and wording. Although there are words that are legally required to be said, we can adapt some wording to suit your style. The wording has been adapted to try to pre-empt the implementation of the Equal Marriage Act*.

Music can be played for the entrance of either or both parties to the marriage (If required, subject to the approval of the Superintendent Registrar).

IntroductionThis place in which we are met has been duly sanctioned by law for the celebration of marriages.

You are here to witness the joining in matrimony of (Partner 1) to (Partner 2).

Would the partners please stand?

May I formally check your names please?

To Partner 1: Is your full name (Registrar states Partner 1’s name)?

Partner 1 replies: Yes

To Partner 2: Is your full name (Registrar states Partner 2’s name)?

Partner 2 replies: Yes

If any person here present knows of any lawful impediment to this marriage he should declare it now.

(Partner 1) and (Partner 2), before you are joined in matrimony, I have to remind you of the solemn and binding character of marriage.

*Marriage, according to the law of this country, is the union of one man with one woman voluntarily entered into for life to the exclusion of all others.

The purpose of marriage is that you may always love, care for and support each other through the joys and sorrows of life and that love may be fulfilled in a relationship of permanent and continuing commitment.

* This may be revised when the Act is implemented.

Yes I’ll Marry You (Pam Ayres) •

Yes I’ll marry you, my dear,And here’s the reason why;So I can push you out of bedWhen the baby starts to cry,And if we hear a knockingAnd it’s creepy and it’s lateI hand you the torch you see,And you investigate

It’s you who has to work the drillAnd put up curtain track,And when I’ve PMT it’s you who gets the flak,I do see great advantagesBut none of them for you,And so before you see the lightI do, I do, I do!

I Wish for You One Thing, and That is Love (William Byrd) ••••

I wish for you one thing, and that is love:Love for life, and pure, unfettered joyAt being here upon this vivid earth.

May great pleasure come from giving pleasure,And love that streams out from your burning heartLight the darkened world and make it bloom.

I wish you to be loved both well and longBy all those whom you love; that these be many,Among whom, not the least, might be yourself.

May you love the beautiful and good,And always act with honesty and justice,Being what you would that others be.

But most of all, I wish for you a loveInto which your love might plunge and drown,An ocean in which you might live and breathe.

The Example of Parenthood •

There are little eyes upon you and they’re watching night and day; There are little ears that quickly take in everything you say; There are little hands all eager to do everything you do, And a little boy who’s dreaming of the day he’ll be like you.

You’re the little fellow’s idol, you’re the wisest of the wise;In his little mind about you no suspicions ever rise. There’s a wide eyed little fellow who believes you’re always right,And his ears are always open and he watches day and night.

You are setting an example every day in all you do,For the little boy who’s waiting to grow up to be like you.

Desiderata (Max Ehrmann’s) •••

Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for there will always be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble. It is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But, let this not blind you to what virtue there is. Many persons strive for high ideals and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune, but do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars. You have a right to be here. And, whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

Extract from Les Miserables (Victor Hugo) •••

You can never give without loving, but you can never love without giving. The great acts of love are done by those who are habitually performing small acts of kindness. We pardon to the extent that we love. Love is knowing that even when you are alone, you will never be lonely again. And great happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved. Loved for ourselves. And even love in spite of ourselves.

Love is Giving (Anon) •••

Love is giving, not taking, mending, not breaking, trusting, believingnever deceiving, patiently bearingand faithfully sharingeach joy, every sorrow, today and tomorrow.

Love is kind, understandingbut never demanding.Love is constant, prevailing,it’s strength never failing.A promise once spokenfor all time unbroken,A lifetime together,Love’s time is for ever.

Where there is loveThe heart is light,Where there is loveThe day is bright,Where there is loveThere is a songTo help when thingsAre going wrong.Where there is loveThere is a smileTo make all thingsSeem more worthwhile.

Sonnet 116 (William Shakespeare) ••

Let me not to the marriage of true mindsAdmit impediments, love is not loveWhich alters when it alteration finds,Or bends with the remover to remove.O no! It is an ever fixed mark,That looks on tempests and is never shaken; It is the star to every wandering bark,Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.Love’s not Time fool, though rosy lips and cheeksWithin his bending sickle’s compass come,Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,But bears it out even to the edge of doom:If this be error and upon me proved,I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

You are my North, my South, my East and West,My working week and my Sunday rest.My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song,I know love can be forever if deep and strong.

The stars are all wanted now, alight every one.Uncloak the Moon and raise high the Sun,Said across the wide oceans, run through the green woods,Enjoy the celebration, life has proved to be good.

What is Love? •••Sooner or later we begin to understand that love is more than verses on valentines and romance in the movies.

We begin to know that love is here and now, real and true, the most important thing in our lives.

For love is the creator of our favourite memories and the foundation of our fondest dreams.

Love is a promise that is always kept, a fortune that can never be spent, a seed that can flourish in even the most unlikely of places.

And this radiance that never fades, this mysterious and magical joy, is the greatest treasure of all.

Have you an occasion which you would like to mark with a special commemorative certificate?

We have a huge variety.

All of our certificates are good quality and are personalised to suit the individual. They can be laminated if required.

Certificates can be collected or posted out and may be ordered online atwww.shropshire.gov.uk, over the telephone 0345 678 9016 or in personat any registration service point or council service desk.

Why renew your vows?

There are many reasons why couples choose to hold a renewal of vows ceremony, here are just a few:

Those who have married abroad, choose to have a renewal of vows ceremony in order that they can share their experience and joy with their family and friends who were not present at their marriage ceremony.

Couples who are nearing a milestone anniversary choose these ceremonies to renew their vows to each other and celebrate their special day with family and friends.

Couples who have suffered some difficulties and have overcome these choose to renew their commitment to each other and seek to strengthen their bonds either privately or with close family and friends.

Couples who may not have been in a position to have an extravagant day when they had their marriage or civil partnership, choose to do it all again in style.

Family members also arrange these ceremonies as a surprise for their loved ones to mark some special milestone.

These ceremonies follow a similar format to a marriage ceremony and are tailored to meet the individual circumstances of the couple. Couples can choose to include readings and music, exchange new rings or their original ones, include children or other family members. To assist you we have included some readings and poems which have featured in ceremonies on the previous pages in this publication.

A commemorative certificate is signed at the ceremony and there are a range of other commemorative certificates which can be purchased to mark the occasion. It is also possible to purchase invitations and confetti in advance from the Registration Service.

Ceremonies can be held at any of ceremony rooms around the County and in any of the approved venues, it may be possible to hold them in other venues subject to additional costs and suitable risk assessment.

A non returnable deposit is taken on booking.

Bookings can be made up to 2 years in advance.

Bookings can be made, by post (please request one from Shropshire Registration Service), over the telephone – 0345 678 9016, by email, [email protected] and will shortly be able to be made on the internet, by visiting www.shropshire.gov.uk
