One Family, founded as Cherish in 1972, is Ireland’s leading organisation for one-parent families, providing services to people parenting alone, sharing parenting and going through family transitions. Our policy work is rooted in our extensive family support work. Children are at the centre of this work and we help all the adults in their lives, offering a holistic model of specialist family support services. Over the decades, we have always worked to combat the stereotypes that can be attached to families that are perceived as non-traditional. We know, and research demonstrates, that it’s not family make-up that is most important to a child’s well-being but the quality of relationships at home. We founded the Family Day Festival four years ago so that all families have a day every year to celebrate their family.

We believe all families matter, and that individuals who feel cared for and supported by those around them – whether families or friends or others in their lives – help to make stronger communities for us all. We like the UN definition of family which refers to two or more people, bound together by mutual consent, birth and/or adoption or placement who together care for each other. We celebrate all types of family on Family Day – one-parent families, step families, the traditional married family, adoptive and foster families, blended and extended families, and those with opposite

and same sex parents. Family Day is inspired by UN International Day of Families which is held on 15 May annually and was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1992. In 2014, we also celebrate the 20th anniversary of UN International Year of the Family.

The Festival has grown to become Ireland’s largest celebration of the diversity of families that make up modern Irish society. The programme is packed with comedy, magic, arts workshops, yoga workshops, talks, music, storytelling, sports and lots more, and also offers the chance to meet with many family organisations to find out about what they do. Entry and all activities, workshops and entertainment are free.

The Family Day Festival 2014 is presented with the kind support of the Community Foundation for Ireland and Dublin City Council. Thank you to Today FM which has supported Family Day since 2011 and to the Office of Public Works for their continued support in providing the beautiful Iveagh Gardens. A huge thanks to Aidan Bishop and also to all our wonderful performers and event volunteers, the many individuals and organisations who contribute in countless ways.

The Festival is getting bigger and better every year. Email us on [email protected] if you’d like get involved in 2015.

Thank you for joining in the celebrations this year and being a part of it. Have lots of fun and a very Happy Family Day!

One Family welcomes you, your family and your friends to our annual Family Day Festival.

Lost & Found ChildrenParents/Guardians are solely responsible for the safety and well-being of their child/children at all times. At a busy event, it is important to be aware of your child’s location at all times. Follow the steps below to help ensure your and your child’s well-being and enjoyment of the Festival.

1 Take a free wristband at any of the entrance gates or at the Information Booth beside the waterfall. Write your own mobile phone number on this clearly and fasten it around your child’s wrist. Do not write any names or other information on the wristband. This will help you and your child to be reunited quickly should s/he be lost.

2 Be vigilant – there are lots of fun activities at the Festival and it is very easy for a child to become distracted and wander off within seconds.

Lost Child

1 If you realise your child is missing, stay calm. Check the immediate vicinity and call out to your child.

2 If you cannot find your child, alert the event staff who will help. Go to the Information Booth and notify the staff there or notify a steward wearing a Family Day t-shirt, one of the security team, or the Red Cross personnel. You will be asked for a description and some basic details.

3 Stewards will help you to locate your child.

4 All gates are staffed and no child should leave the Iveagh Gardens alone.

5 When you find your child, remember to notify a member of the event team so the search can be called off.

Found Child

1 If you find a child who is clearly lost, check the immediate vicinity for their family. If they’re wearing a wristband with a phone number, you may wish to call the number to reunite them with their guardian.

2 Otherwise bring the child to the Information Booth beside the waterfall and event staff will help.

3 If the child does not want to go with you, alert event staff – notify a steward wearing a Family Day t-shirt, one of the security team or the Red Cross personnel.

The Lost & Found Child Service at the Family Day Festival is co-ordinated by two experienced One Family staff members – Director of Child and Parent Services, Geraldine Kelly and Director of Counselling, Sherie de Burgh.
