Brian Buchanan (Enter the Haggis) and Rose Baldino (Burning Bridget Cleary) have an on stage chemistry that is engaging and often hilarious. Spend an hour listening and you’ll leave with tired feet, a huge smile, and a new appreciation for the versatility of folk instruments in a modern context.
Award-winning quartet We Banjo 3 from Galway, Ireland combine Irish music with old-time American and Bluegrass influences to reveal the banjo’s rich legacy and roots. When this band of brothers take flight in a wave of virtuosity, verve and joie-de-vivre, feet tap and pulses race.

A LITTLE HISTORY
Before looking at the modern Feis (pronounced “fesh”) it’s important to recall a little history. Irish step-dancing as we know it in the 21st century can be traced back to traveling dance masters of 18th century rural Ireland. They each developed their own “steps” (footwork danced to eight measures or bars of music) and competed against each other for the opportunity to teach in different regions. After decades when Irish step-dancing remained relatively unknown outside of its inner circle, Riverdance hit the world stage in the 1990s. Suddenly, Irish step-dancing became the “rage,” not just in Ireland, but world-wide. Families who had never even heard of a “step” or “ghillie” were enrolling their children in step-dancing classes and assembling at Feisanna (plural for Feis) to watch them compete.
THE CELTIC FLING FEISThe Celtic Fling and Highland Games and Mount Hope Estate & Winery is proud once again to be the official Feis sponsor of the 14th annual Celtic Fling Feis. Through our combined efforts with the Irish cultural society, the Pittsburgh Winter Feis and the West Virginia Feis, we have grown to be a destination on the Feis circuit. A special thank you to Jim Graven,
Kathy Yates and Jared Spencer and all of our volunteers for all of their hard work and input in making this Feis what it is today.Saturday, visitors to the Fling are welcome to watch the ongoing Feis competition with its 1000 dancers, many of whom will advance to participate in regional compe-titions known as Oireachtas (pronounced “or-rock-tas”) and the highest levels to the World Championships in Ireland (Oireachtas Cruinne). While competition among the dancers is clearly seen, the bottom line is that for each of them, Irish dancing is FUN and a link to their Irish heritage.
NORTH AMERICAN FEIS COMMISSIONThe Celtic Fling Feis is a member of the North American Feis Commission, an organization of Feis Managers responsible for organizing Feiseanna throughout Canada and the United States. The NAFC provides guidance for establishing and executing a multi-cultural event developed and promoted to advance Celtic heritage through Irish dance and music. It also exists to promote Irish culture —it’s evolution, symbolism, appreciation and respect—as well as to encourage study of Irish Culture in North America. •

REID SCHOOL OF HIGHLAND DANCEThe non-profit Philadelphia Highland Dancing Association was founded by Marguerite Reid over 60 years ago. The Reid School of Highland Dance performs at various venues such as the Green Lane Scottish Irish Festival and Philadelphia St. Andrew’s Society events such as their Tartan Ball. A special memory for the school was performing with the Davidson School at the Kennedy Center Honors Gala for Sir Sean Connery, the President and other distinguished guests when Mr. Connery received the Honor in 1999.
SCOIL RINCE NA CONNEMARAScoil Rince na Connemara from Northeastern Pennsylvania has been entertaining crowds at the Celtic Fling for over 10 years. The mission of this innovative dance group is to further Irish culture by showing the true beauty, grace, and athleticism of Irish dance which includes intricate solo stepdancing, artistic group choreography, and traditional Céilí dancing. Connemara is renowned for their unique blend of progressive stepdancing with modern Celtic sounds that is often imitated, but never duplicated.

CLANS & SOCIETIES
Celtic folk frequently use the term “clan,” but no specific definition of the term is accepted by all authorities. The word itself is Gaelic for “children” and was also used as an equivalent for “family.” Regardless, a clan is considered to be a group of families that are affiliated by geography or marriage or political necessity.
You’ll find many clans and societies represented at the Celtic Fling. Stop by Bosworth Field and learn more about the programs, plans and worthwhile missions the clans and societies maintain for increasing the awareness of Celtic influences on American culture.
