Cedarbrook Country Club March 2017 Cedarbrook Country Club Be yourself with your second family. A club where you can be yourself and a place our members consider their home away from home. It’s all about you and less about us. We encourage you and your family to come as you are. You’ll find open tee times, open tables and an open door that will make you feel right at home from day one. President’s Letter The Club hosted many events throughout February including our fourth annual Bingo night, hosted by our very own Amelia Rorer, which was very well attended. Thank you Amelia for putting your special touch on such a fun event. Theme nights have started at the Club and anyone who participated in the Asian night can attest that they were treated to spectacular and delicious entrees from the Orient. There are plenty of exciting events planned this month at the Club including Friday Happy Hours, St. Patrick’s Day celebration, Junior Sports Sign-Up and many more. Please check the calendar in this Newsletter as well as on our website for all events planned this month. Our staff continues to grow and improve with the most recent addition of Chris Cimino as the new Assistant Clubhouse Manager. His experience and familiarity with the country club atmosphere is a welcoming addition and, we anticipate, will continue to raise the standard of service at the Club. We would also like to congratulate Debbie Kinley, former server recently profiled in last month’s Newsletter, who has agreed to assist Beverly on a full-time basis in the accounting department. Please join me in welcoming Chris and congratulating Debbie. The repairs and restoration due to the sprinkler pipe break are near complete. We appreciate the patience and understanding of the membership during this time. The front office, janitor’s closet, women’s and men’s bathrooms are complete and the corridor wainscot and new carpet are scheduled to be completed over the next couple of weeks. It should be noted that another potential disaster was averted two weeks ago when it was discovered that a concealed section of galvanized sprinkler pipe, which was the source of the original problem, split during the refilling of the sprinkler system. Fortunately, the sprinkler contractor was onsite, and with the assistance of Rob Nolek, the situation was addressed immediately and no damages occurred. We believe that all galvanized sprinkler pipe has been replaced at this time and therefore should not be at risk of this happening again. Over the next two months, weather permitting, the tennis courts will be getting a much needed face lift. All courts are scheduled to be redone, a path between the courts will be installed as well as replacing all of the fence around the courts. This will not only improve the tennis courts but will enhance the appearance of the Club as you drive up to the Clubhouse. In addition, the Pool Locker Rooms are scheduled to have new slip resistant epoxy flooring installed as well as fresh new paint, exhaust and lighting improvements performed prior to the start of the new season. This work is being organized and spearheaded by Board Member Kevin Pinkerton, the Pool and Tennis Chairman. A special thanks to fellow member Rich Pucci for his assistance and contributions with the new fencing. We also would like to thank fellow member Bryan Ellis for the generous donation of the use of a bull dozer for shaping and spreading fill at the practice range, along with thanking fellow member Sal Paone for the donation of the fill material. Contributions and donations from fellow members are greatly appreciated and continue to assist in the improvement to our Club. On behalf of the Board of Governors and myself, please have a safe and Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Michael Keller

Ladies’ Night Recap: DIY Wine Carafe & Board Etching

The Ladies’ of Cedarbrook Country Club channeled their inner creativity during February's GNO - DIY Wine Carafe & Board Etching Event. Denise Sabia from "The Painted Home" was the event’s creative leader. Not one Carafe or Board looked like any other, it was truly a night of individuality. One member is quoted saying, "Sometimes it ends up different and it is better that way!" Ladies enjoyed the chef's appetizer and dessert bars. A nice finishing touch to the evening was provided by Chaddsford Winery as the ladies savored the wine tastings of a little red and a little white. Save the date for the March 29th GNO - Bunco! Our reigning Bunco Queens, Ruth Ann Smith and Fran Chadwick, will defend their titles!

Greens Update

While we are still a month from the start of the golf season, weather and playing conditions have been excellent for this time of year. The greens have been cut at least twice at the publishing of this update. While we are still in off season condition, the cut helped to "clean up" the putting surfaces for those who have come out to enjoy the unseasonable warmth.

Tree work, maintenance of equipment and general cleaning has been the focus of the staff, as preparations for the upcoming golf season continue. The weather patterns have been mild so far with large swings in temperature. This includes cutting new cups on a beautiful Wednesday, then plowing snow on the following Thursday in early February.

The first tee renovation project was delayed due to unanticipated work by the staff inside the clubhouse to help repair the damage done by the burst pipe over the club's winter closure. Work will resume with the project still expected to be completed by the beginning of the golf season.

From the Golf Shop

Have you ever had a situation where you hit a shot that was borderline between finishing on the green or in a greenside bunker, only to have the ball strike a RAKE positioned outside the bunker and end up IN THE BUNKER???? It really is a case of bad luck... but for most of us who have played this game for a long time, we all know that bad luck usually happens when you are playing badly… while GOOD LUCK seems to always accompany a good round. The first thought after that happens usually involves some choice words for the player or maintenance staff member who decided to lay the rake outside of the bunker rather than INSIDE the bunker…which on the surface seems to be the most logical spot. Perhaps another way of looking at it will help you understand why placing rakes OUTSIDE the bunker and not INSIDE the bunker is recommended by the USGA. USGA Decisions Book MISC/2 Page 553

Q. Should rakes be placed in or outside bunkers? A. There is not a perfect answer for the position of rakes, but on balance it is felt there is less likelihood of an

advantage or disadvantage to the player if rakes are placed outside bunkers. It may be argued that there is more likelihood of a ball being deflected into or kept out of a bunker if the rake is placed outside the bunker. It could also be argued that if the rake is in the bunker, it is most unlikely that the ball will be deflected out of the bunker. However, in practice, players who leave rakes in bunkers frequently leave them at the side which tends to stop a ball rolling into the flat part of the bunker, resulting in a much more difficult shot than would otherwise have been the case. This is most prevalent at a course where the bunkers are small. When the ball comes to rest on or against a rake in the bunker and the player must proceed under Rule 24-1, it may not be possible to replace the ball on the same spot or find a spot in the bunker which is not nearer the hole – see Decision 20-3d/2. If rakes are left in the middle of the bunker, the only way to position them is to throw them into the bunker and this causes damage to the surface. Also, if a rake is in the middle of a large bunker, it is either not used or the player is obliged to rake a large area of the bunker resulting in unnecessary delay. Therefore, after considering all these aspects, it is recommended that rakes should be left outside bunkers in areas where they are least likely to affect the movement of the ball. Ultimately it is a matter for the Committee to decide where it wishes rakes to be placed.

Racquet News

It doesn’t seem like it but “SPRING” and our TENNIS SEASON is just around the corner. With some luck the weather will hold as outdoor play officially starts Saturday, April 1st. This season will be another exciting, yet challenging one, for many reasons. Our Cedarbrook Ladies’ Inter Club Monday Cup 10 and Wednesday Cup C are once again in very strong positions to win their leagues this year, and we are very excited to once again add another Ladies’ USTA Team:

3.5 USTA Cedarbrook Alley Cats, Captained by Mrs. Kristen Fath. Our 3.0 USTA Cedarbrook Ladies Team, Over Served, that Mrs. Deena Shilling took to the playoffs last

season, will once again lead her winning team to another successful season as they are fielding an even stronger team this year.

Our most improved players, Cedarbrook Sweet Shots USTA 2.5 Team captained by Mrs. Kirsten Gambone, are looking forward to their second year in competitive play.

Meet a Fellow Member Kristin & Craig Neverosky

This month we welcome Craig and Kristin Neverosky to our column. They have been club members for a total of five and half years. Kristin is a toddler teacher at Montgomery County Community College Children’s Center. In her free time, her main focus is on exercise. She’s an avid runner who describes her morning run as her “cup of coffee”. Prior to her current job, Kristen was involved in the tennis program. She used to play with Dale...Her nickname was "Wheels!" She would like to eventually return to the court when the kids are not taking up all of her summer time. Craig currently is the sales director of ZS Pharma. His main passion is golf but also enjoys hunting and fishing with their two boys. Will, age 15, is a freshman at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy and Luke, age 14, who will be joining his brother at Chestnut Hill next year, as a freshman. Both boys enjoy football, lacrosse and basketball. In addition to the boys, they have an 11 year old daughter named Courtney. She’s a 5

th grader at Mary Mother of the Redeemer and

enjoys soccer and lacrosse, but her passion is swimming. Kristen tells me that her pre-game ritual before a big meet is her favorite egg breakfast at Cedarbrook . Craig has had some great achievements at Cedarbrook. He and his teammate, Roger Tappen, were the Runners Up in the 2012 Men’s Better Ball. Craig was also the Runner Up in the 2012 Men’s Club Championship “A” Flight. When asked if he ever had an Eagle, Birdie or hole in one, his reply…Not Enough!! Besides Golf and Tennis, Craig and Kristin enjoy having fun with their friends in our very lively Grille Room bar. One of the reasons for joining Cedarbrook is that they knew quite a few friends who were already members. Craig loved the golf course, the atmosphere and that “home away from home” feeling. They believe that what separates Cedarbrook from other clubs is the people, both the members and the staff. “The members we have met and hang out with are all just wonderful people. The staff at Cedarbrook is also second to none, always giving everyone a welcoming feeling. They are truly excited to see everyone there when we arrive.” What would they say to a potential new member thinking of joining? ”DO IT NOW!! You will be wondering why you didn't do it sooner. It is so worth it, and you will have so many lasting memories, unless you are at the bar with Craig...in that case you may forget a few memories.” I always ask for a favorite quote. Theirs is… "We may not have it all together, but together we have it all.” I just love that!
