Best Practises and Lessons learned from Green interventions at Engen service stations in Africa I

description

With the expected Eskom increases over the next five years, retail petroleum service stations are facing reduced profitability and some even closure as profits are continually eroded by rising operating costs. Electricity is one of the costs that can be managed and self generated. This conference aims to examine best practices in energy efficiency and unpack the options and complexities of generating electricity from renewable energy specifically for retail fuel sites.

IBD : Green Road Map Understand the greatest impacts

- Start with Retail Service Stations- then depots and offices- Encourage our partners to participate…..Wimpy & Corner

Bakery- Go for the quick wins- Gain credibility and support for initiatives- Expand on successes

Get the Dealers to buy-in- Before and after measurements- Prove the claims

Process followed -9 step process-Key areas

- Behaviour and Procedure- Technology

Page 5: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

Step 1 : Audit - Operational and Behavioural change

- 15-20% savings possible

- Identify Opportunities- Observe procedures e.g. opening- Influence and educate- Implement (Training manuals)

Switch off when not in usePre-heating is 10 mins

Turn off the light

Report leaks

Page 6: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

Step 2 : Audit - Identify Power consumers

- Prioritise interventions based on:- Contribution to site- Capex Cost and payback

Page 7: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

Step 3 : Audit - Occupancy Audits- Measure:

• When the lights are on• When the room is occupied

- Result – 10-90% savings potential with Sensor control

Page 8: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

Step 4 : Audit - Lux Audits

• Are areas over lit? • Identify, redesign and

change light fittings

• Consider:– OHS Act– Marketers needs– E.g. Wimpy 25% over lit

Page 9: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

Step 5 : Design - Thermal Modelling

• Optimise Building orientation for lowest thermal gain• Benefits:

– Reduced demand on HVAC

– Increased shade on shop fronts

Page 10: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

Step 6 : Design - Challenge the current standards

• Replace black ceilings with white for improved light reflection

• Use reflective paint on walls and ceilings……light & space• Soften the angle on the vertical bulkheads to deflect light

Angled bulkhead White ceiling

Step 7: Design - Value Engineering

As a result of ongoing monitoring of Demand Profiles across sites- Site Power Infrastructure down graded:

– From 250kVA to 100kVA (Target is 50 kVA)– Lighter supply cables– Generator downsized by 150kVA

Page 12: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

Step 8: Our Partners - Wimpy and Corner Bakery

• Agreement reached on reduction of lux levels• Scrapping of dropped ceilings and bulkheads so as not to

block out the daylight• CO2 and Humidity sensors on extract fans : instead of

operating 24/7, fans now activated by grilling activity• Variable speed drives fitted to extractor fans • Motion sensors in stores and cold rooms• Move towards gas appliances where feasible• Investigating induction cookers • Access to training manuals

• Staggered start

Step 9 : Roll out interventions

Roll out the interventions!

Interventions implemented -Pilot approach

- Analyse opportunities- Research emerging technologies- Design solutions- Implement solutions- Measure results- Roll out success stories

Page 15: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

1) Measuring and Managing- On site remote metering

• Pro-active Demand Management• Voltage Optimisation• Tariff Analysis• Invoice Verification• Carbon Footprint

Page 16: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

2) Day-light Harvesting- Lighting accounts for 22% of electricity costs- 90% saving during daylight hours- Ceilings have to be white for reflecting light- Under ceiling bulkheads need to tilt at 60 degrees to deflect light onto shelving

Page 17: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

3) Indirect Evaporative Cooling – Solar powered

- AC Cooling accounts for 23% of Electricity costs Powered by PV panels (reverts to grid after hours)

The saving is R 51,888 pa

Rundu 1 Stop:C Conventional AC: 30 kVA

Indirect Evap Cooling:

2.1 kVA

Page 18: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

4) Reflective roof coating

- AC Cooling 23% & Refrigeration 16% of Site- Reduces load on cooling

Page 19: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

5) LED Bi-Level Canopy Lighting with sensor

• LED Canopy lights with a light and motion sensor• Proven saving of 90% versus the 400w metal halide

Page 20: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

6) LED Lighting Internally with lux and motion sensors

• LED lighting throughout • Sensor automatically maintains lux levels • Motion sensors in stores and cold rooms switch off

automatically• No light switches in service areas

* LED – Light Omitting Diodes

Page 21: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

7) Voltage Optimisation

• Direct the mains supply via a voltage optimiser tapping the voltage down to 216 - 222 range

• Benefits:

– Voltage spike protection

– Power factor correction

– Improved Harmonics

– Reduced maintenance costs

– Guarantees on projected savings

– Only pay for 222 volts

– Saving of 16%

Page 22: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

8) Hot Water – Solar

• Benefits:

– Grid independence

– Reduced electricity costs

Page 23: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

OR: Hot Water - Heat Pump

• Benefits:

– Hot water generated at a high co-efficient of performance

– Water heated on demand

– Not limited by sunlight

Page 24: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

9) Solar Roof Void Venting Fan

• Benefits:

– Air-conditioning units operate at lower capacity due to the reduced heat in the roof void

– Enhances the life of the Air-conditioning Equipment

Page 25: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

10) Isofoil Roof Insulation

• Benefits:

– Double the current insulation : Greater U Value

– Eco-Friendly : made from recycled coke bottles

Page 26: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

11) Thermal Imaging

• Use Infrared imagery to evaluate the air-tightness of building

• Benefits:

– Reduced demand on HVAC

– Ensure proper installation by contractors

– Identify areas to be improved at existing sites

Page 27: Cecil Van Niekerk, Construction & Engineering Manager, Engen

12) Window Films
