Project: Greystone FootbridgeValue: £1.8 million

Client: Knowsley Council

Contractor: Eric Wright Civil Engineering Ltd (EWCE)EWCE was appointed to replace an existing footbridge over the M62 motorway with a new combined footbridge and cycleway. The design took the form of a symmetrical cable-stayed deck supported on the existing abutments and a newly constructed 7 metre high V-shaped concrete pier. A steel pylon approximately 23 metres tall supported the stay cables. The works included modifications to the existing abutments to accommodate the new steel plate deck and the installation of 20 metre long rotary bored piles to support the concrete pier. Completed on time and on budget, the project was winner of the CECA NW Project of the Year (under £5 million) Award 2016.

D Morgan was lead partner for earthworks to construct 6 miles of high speed railway on £250m Staffordshire Area Improvement Programme. The project increases capacity and line speeds with new flyover, 10 new bridges and one bridge enhancement, road/river/footpath diversions, and environmental works. D Morgan has undertaken cut and fill excavation for railway and railhead, track bed construction, construction of haul roads, four river diversions, 23kms trackside drainage, site compounds, highway and junction construction, structures excavations and piling/working platforms, site clearance and demolition works. D Morgan was CECA NW award winner for major projects over £5m.

Project: Stockport’s Town Centre Access Plan (TCAP)Value: £73 millionClient: Stockport Council

Contractor: George Cox & Sons LtdGeorge Cox was approached by Stockport Council to provide Early Contractor Involvement support in relation to buildability and best value solutions, costings and programmes for over 20 separate highway improvement schemes which were to be collectively known as Stockport’s Town Centre Access Plan (TCAP). TCAP is a key part of Stockport’s £900m growth and regeneration programme ‘Investing in Stockport’, providing access to regeneration areas and improving access into and around the town centre. Stockport’s £73m TCAP project is now well underway with over £16m and half of the phase 1 schemes completed to date.

Project: Frodsham Wind FarmClient: Frodsham Wind Farm LimitedValue: £13.5 million

Contractor: Cheetham Hill Construction LimitedFrodsham Wind Farm comprises nineteen 125m Nordex N90 wind turbines and each bespoke turbine will generate up to 2.65MW capacity, providing a total of up to 50MW installed capacity. Located close to the Mersey Estuary and Manchester Ship Canal, the site is an important ecological area and protection measures were implemented for several species including badgers, water voles and various nesting birds such as the Eurasian Marsh Harrier. The project received a CEEQUAL Excellent Whole Team Award and was the first construction site in the UK to achieve a Biodiversity Benchmark: Design for Construction Award from the Wildlife Trusts.

Project: West Coast Main Line Improvement ProgrammeValue: £16 million

PLCE are working collaboratively with SBJV to deliver complex architectural features using innovative formwork solutions. By sharing knowledge and experience PLCE ensure that key milestones are met and delays to the rail network are minimised. The Northern Hub project demonstrates the quality of management, technical ability and experience inherent in the PL Civil Engineering team to a part in one of Manchester’s key construction Projects of the last 10 years.

Project: RhenusValue: £1.2 million

Client: Peel Developments

Contractor: CPUK Civils & RemediationCPUK Civils and Remediation offered a blackfield site wide remediation & geotechnical solution, bio remediating the site hotspots and stabilising site won soils, providing a replacement capping stone saving time, mitigate all disposal and significantly reducing import stone cost, with reduction of traffic movement at a restricted access site as they prepared for piling and drainage operations at Rhenus Irlam during winter 2016/2017. The project value was a £1.2 million enabling package, including Section 278 and Highway works as part of a £7 million new build on the Peel owned blackfield site with CPUK construction partners.

Project: Haweswater Phase 2 - Swindale Intake Client: United UtilitiesProject Value: £ 4.4 million

Contractor: CoffeyThe Swindale Intake supplies raw water to the Haweswater Impounding Reservoir. The purpose of the project was to design and construct a new intake facility with its abstraction flow based upon river flow in accordance with the Environment Agency/United Utilities Final Licence Agreement. Coffey Construction engaged with the Environment Agency, United Utilities and other stakeholders and presented a proposal to divert the Swindale Beck around the works area for the duration of the project through a temporary cutting. The application of off-site fabrication, particularly precast concrete elements, also reduced the time spent at site, and reduced the environmental risks and health and safety hazards. This contributed to an exemplary health and safety record with no reportable accidents.

Awarded through the Scape National Civil Engineering and Infrastructure Framework, the A574 Birchwood Pinch Point Scheme was a huge success delivering exceptional social, economic and environmental benefits. The scheme comprised the upgrade/development of three key road junctions to improve access to and from Birchwood. The works included converting existing roundabout into signalised junction; upgrade of two roundabouts; modifying layout of existing island; installation of traffic signals; widening road alignment to increase number of lanes; and the creation of new bus lane. Collaborative efforts on this project generated an additional £0.53 of value for every £1 spent. This, combined with local economic impact, generated £6.2m of social value for £4m of construction spend.

Project – A574 Birchwood Pinch Point Scheme

Client – Warrington Borough Council

Project Value - £ 5 million
