40 years ago, the Dow closed at a high of 838, a gallon of gas was 38 cents, the world’s population was 3.8 billion and the repercussions of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill stirred the conscience of a nation.

40 years ago, a small group of citizens thrust the fragility of our planet, and our responsibility to protect it, into the forefront in Santa Barbara – while others brought it to the national stage for the first time.

Some say Santa Barbara was the birthplace of Earth Day, as it was after seeing the devastation of the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara that Senator Gaylord Nelson introduced a bill designating April 22 as a national day to celebrate the earth.

In April 1970, the ripple caused by the Santa Barbara oil spills and national movement to protect the planet caused a group of Santa Barbara civic minded environmentalists to form the Community Environmental Council (CEC). The first order of business for CEC was to host one of the first Earth Day celebrations in the world on the corner of State and Anapamu.

In April of 2010, the arc of the environmental movement reaches a new historic level as we celebrate the:

The History of Earth Day and the Community Environmental Council

“...On April 22, 1970, Earth Day was held, one of the most remarkable happenings in the history of democracy.”

– American Heritage Magazine, October 1993

For decades, Earth Day has been the annual gathering of community to share information, celebrate the advances we have made in our collective effort to protect the planet, and recharge for another year.

Earth Day 40: Bringing it Home will stress the importance of bringing sustainability into our own homes, as well as our larger home – our county, our bioregion, our state, our country, our planet. In line with the Community Environmental Council’s Fossil Free by ’33 campaign, “Bringing it Home” captures

time to celebrate…time to take action

the importance of daily choices and actions in making Santa Barbara one of the first fossil-free communities in the nation.

This year we’ll return to our new home in Alameda Park, a beautiful location that allows us to continue to grow and also extend the event from one day to two.

On April 17 & 18, 2010 we hope you will join us along with over 25,000 other community members to celebrate 40 years of protecting the planet.

Earth Day is the most important event of the year for any company or organization to profile green programs and products, and connect with the exploding population of green consumers. As seen across mainstream media and in the market place, sustainability efforts are no longer a luxury – they are a requirement.

In light of the historic 40th Anniversary of Earth Day and CEC, we are investing additional time, money and resources to expand this event to attract more people and attention to Earth Day and the many ways to protect the planet.

“Being in a niche business offering “green” printing, business marketing materials and apparel, we found participating in Earth Day as very successful to showcase our companies abilities and were well received into the ‘Green’ community. Supporting CEC on Earth Day will become a yearly tradition.” – Andre Neumann, Nu Image Ad Group

“REC Solar has participated in the Santa Barbara Earth Day for the past 13 years and last year’s event was by far the best! Kudos to all the hard working staff and volunteers of the Community Environmental Council, we loved the change of venue to the larger location, all the new groups and vendors, the way the booths were organized, the music, the communication and the attention to the smallest details. Once again it was an absolute privilege to be a part of this fabulous community event. We were proud to be able to provide the electrical power with our REC solar panels! We look forward to the 2010 Earth Day celebration.” – Michael Lind, REC Solar
