The name“Bohol”

is said to be derived from the word Bo-ol, a district in the City of Tagbilaran, where off its waters was located the seat of the powerful Dapitan Kingdom. In 1565, the Spanish General Miguel Lopez de Legazpi anchored his fleet in Bohol and forged ablood compact with the native Boholano chieftain, Datu Sikatuna. The pact is considered as the firstinternational treaty of friendship, prompting the Philippine Government to establish the Order ofSikatuna, a presidential decoration conferred upon diplomats.

In 1596, two Jesuits missionaries arrived and started the Christianization of the island from the townof Baclayon and spreading to the inland town of Loboc and later, to the northern towns. The mostimposing stone churches that still exist to this day were built throughout the 19th century by theJesuits and the Augustinian Recollects who took over the former missionary work in 1768. During

the Spanish regime, two significant revolts occurred in Bohol. One was the Tamblot Uprising in 1621and the other, the Dagohoy Rebellion, known as the longest revolt in the Philippine History, whichlasted for 85 years.

In 1854, Bohol became a politico-military district separate from Cebu and Tagbilaran was designatedas capital of the new province. The Spanish regime was followed by the American colonial rule during which many schools wereestablished in the province. With the end of World War II in 1945, Bohol gradually progressed, harnessing its wealth of natural and cultural resources, and emerging today as a major touristdestination in the Philippines. The Bohol Branch of the National Museum, located in the download area of Tagbilaran City (besidethe Bohol Provincial Capitol), houses the artifacts and relics during Bohol’s prehistoric times as it

also showcases the richness of the flora and fauna of the island.

Cebu Province (Filipino: Lalawigan ng Cebu, Tagalog pronunciation: province in the Philippines, consisting of 167 surrounding islands. Its capital is Cebu Metropolitan Area together with fourneighboring cities which include Lapu-Lapu City, Talisay City and eight other municipalities. Negros, to the west of Bohol islands. Cebu is a long narrow island stretching 225 kilometres (140 mi) from

north to south, surrounded by 167 neighbouring, smaller islands, whichinclude Mactan, Malapascua, Camotes Islands. Cebu has narrow coastlines, limestone plateaus andcoastal plains. It also has rolling hills and rugged mountain ranges traversing the northern andsouthern lengths of the island.

Cebu's highest mountains are over 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) high. Flat tracts of land can be found inthe city of San Remigio, Daanbantayan at the northern region of the province.

In the year 1521, a Portuguese sailor named Ferdinand Magellan came all the way from Spain toestablish conquest of the island of Cebu, and eventually the whole Philippines. However, this dreamwas not realized courtesy of Mactan chieftain, Lapu-Lapu, who became the first-ever Filipino hero tothwart foreign dominance.

A second tier came back into the islands of Cebu, this time with Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, who alsofounded the first settlement known as Villa San Miguel on Cebu in the year 1565. Later on, however, the name was modified to Villa de Santissimo Nombre de Jesus, which is derived from the image ofSanto Nino, or of the child Jesus found amongst the wrecked parts of a subjugated native village.

For 300 years, the Spaniards were able to infiltrate the whole country and later on, in 1860, thedemand for products tobacco, hemp, and sugar cane provided opportunity in the countryside. Also,as the central region of the South, Cebu became the “bridge” in the entering and exiting of goods

through its ports. By the middle of the 19thcentury, Cebu has already established itself to becomeamong the world’s traders. Along with this, several cities have established business structures,

industrial buildings as well as the flourishing of the suburbs.

When the Americans came to aid, Cebu solidified itself into world-class innovation with its modernports, equipments and facilities.
