Hello from the PI, Greetings from Research Task 4! This newsletter will interest you if you use Ugandan roads! Which is just about everyone in the country! How did you get to work today? How will you get back? What about your school going kids? Our concern for road safety is behind our rather strange name, RT4. We are part of CEBHA+, a research network that deals with many health problems, and we in Research Task 4 are the only ones that focus on road safety. We are concerned that while it is now common knowledge that our roads are very hazardous, there is no consensus on what to do to make them safer. We plan to spend the next four years conducting very focused research on what interventions or solutions are being used, why despite them we still have some of the most unsafe roads in the world, and what it is that can and should be done to make these notorious roads safer. So – our sleeves are rolled up and we are busy working. Every 3 months we shall let you know what we have found out, and what else we have lined up. We already work with a broad range of partners in sectors as diverse as health, policing, engineering, urban planning, local government, education, and legislation. We are excited to have this opportunity to work with you on such an important subject, and we are grateful for your cooperation. Hello from the PI,

Greetings from Research Task 4!

This newsletter will interest you if you use Ugandan

roads! Which is just about everyone in the country!

How did you get to work today? How will you get

back? What about your school going kids? Our

concern for road safety is behind our rather strange

name, RT4.

We are part of CEBHA+, a research network that

deals with many health problems, and we in

Research Task 4 are the only ones that focus on

road safety. We are concerned that while it is now

common knowledge that our roads are very hazardous, there is no consensus on what to do

to make them safer. We plan to spend the next four years conducting very focused research

on what interventions or solutions are being used, why despite them we still have some of

the most unsafe roads in the world, and what it is that can and should be done to make these

notorious roads safer. So – our sleeves are rolled up and we are busy working.

Every 3 months we shall let you know what we have found out, and what else we have lined

up. We already work with a broad range of partners in sectors as diverse as health, policing,

engineering, urban planning, local government, education, and legislation. We are excited to

have this opportunity to work with you on such an important subject, and we are grateful for

your cooperation.

PS1: Those of you who like statistics, I promise you there will be plenty of numbers in the

next newsletter. Our maiden edition is simply to introduce the project and its team.

emerged from the Collaboration for Evidence-Based Health care in Africa (CEBHA)

Uganda & Rwanda are conducting projects on, “Finding the evidence for improved

implementation of road traffic injury prevention interventions”

The main objective for this project is to contribute to the reduction of road traffic injury-

related deaths and ill-health by identifying implementation opportunities, providing

tools and mechanisms for the collection and management of quality road traffic data for

monitoring and evaluation of road safety interventions in Uganda.

The specific objectives are:

1. To collect and assess the quality of currently available data to describe the patterns of

road traffic injuries in Uganda.

2. To identify key policy and programmatic aspects in the process of design, implementa-

tion, monitoring and evaluation of existing interventions to reduce traffic injuries in Ugan-

da.

3. To evaluate the effectiveness of international pedestrian targeted- interventions to pre-

vent the occurrence of pedestrian road traffic injuries in Uganda.

4. To evaluate the implementation of current interventions to prevent pedestrian road

traffic injuries in Uganda.

ment of Surgery - Makerere University, a

Surgeon at the Accident & Emergency

Department —Mulago National Referral

Hospital, and founding Executive Director

of the Injury Control Center–Uganda.

She trained and supervised trauma care

teams comprising health workers in differ-

ent specialties, and set up the first hospital-

based injury surveillance system in sub-

Saharan Africa.

She has authored many papers and book

chapters on injury surveillance systems, im-

proving emergency trauma care, injuries

and violence, and road safety in low-income

countries, especially in Africa.

Olive is a surgeon and injury epidemiolo-

gist. She is a Senior Research Fellow at

Makerere University School of Public
