“We understand that global competence is an increasingly valued credential in the era of borderless careers and global markets. Indeed, the pursuit of global competence is a lifelong journey that begins with the experience of study abroad.”

- Brian J. Boubek, Chairman & CEO

As we celebrate our 15th year as a study abroad company, CEA Global Education is proud of the more than 26,000 students we’ve helped acquire an international education through the opportunity and advantages of study abroad. We continue to be dedicated to providing you with the cross-cultural skills and experience that will make you a competitive candidate in today’s globalized job market.

We understand that credentials such as intercultural knowledge, an understanding of global issues and the ability to relate across cultures continue to be of increasing value in the marketplace – especially today, when one in every two college graduates is unemployed or underemployed.

At CEA Global Education, we’re committed to helping our students take that important first step toward preparing for the global marketplace through opportunities such as internships, service learning and volunteer experiences, and new this year, the Global Career Development Certificate.

To that end, we continue to expand our Global Education Network to assist students in acquiring global competence skills. Whether you wish to take courses in English or a foreign language, courses that count toward your major or electives that help you discover new interests, CEA offers more than 100 academic options in 22 cities across our 9 Global Campuses, 31 Global Partner institutions and our esteemed Global Alliance.

Of course, we couldn’t help students explore these expansive academic communities without the expertise of our international resident faculty and staff. Well-published and highly experienced in the field of study abroad, our resident faculty and staff are who make students’ experience abroad enjoyable, rewarding, eye-opening, safe and life-changing.

As always, our team of advisors and financial coordinators remain dedicated to providing one-on-one assistance to students throughout the entire study abroad process, in addition to our executive leadership who work hard to ensure students’ experience abroad is a safe and meaningful one.

We are proud to be a leader in helping students like you acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to compete on an increasingly globalized professional stage. I invite you to consider the many ways in which CEA Global Education can help you achieve your goals.

Sincerely,

Brian J. Boubek Chairman & CEO

CEA Global CampusesCEA Global Campuses are our signature learning environments, designed to meet the needs of U.S. and Canadian students abroad. Global Campus courses are developed by academic experts and are taught by CEA faculty in our own facilities, which combine technical and student support services under one roof. CEA Global Campuses are centrally located in global cities to maximize your international opportunities to connect with and engage the host city as your living classroom. Our curriculum is designed to take you outside of the classroom through activities and excursions that build on your course objectives, enhancing your overall immersion experience. The CEA Global Campus offers:

• Courses taught in English and host language

• Focus on building global competence

• U.S. academic calendar

• Ease of credit transfer

• Interactive, hands-on learning

• Hybrid programs with select Global Partners

• CEA resident staff support

• Student housing

Active Learning

Faculty members integrate local resources, knowledge and expertise by introducing human rights activists, legal experts, government officials and working professionals into class lectures and discussions, transforming them into interactive forums. Alternatively, faculty members will lead you out of the classroom and into the social, cultural and political fabric of Global Campus cities for on-site research, study excursions and active learning. Behind-the-scenes glimpses into art restoration labs, government legislatures and the business of marketing national sports teams are just some of the many opportunities students have to build on traditional class lessons and deepen their cultural understanding of their host city. (See specific examples for Active Learning in the City pages.)

Accreditation

The University of New Haven (UNH) acts as the School of Record for all Global Campuses, overseeing our course syllabi, curriculum and hiring of international faculty. Based on this rigorous oversight, CEA Global Campus courses are transcripted by UNH, which is accredited by The Commissions on Higher Education of the New England Association for Schools of College.

Experience Viña del Mar, ChileConsidered Chile’s premiere seaside resort, Viña del Mar provides a great stepping stone to a semester or summer of Spanish language and Latin American cultural study. A short drive from Santiago, Viña del Mar is more laid-back and friendlier than Santiago, Chile’s capital city. Viña del Mar is conveniently situated and gives visitors easy access to Chile’s many natural wonders. The country’s topography ranges from the Andes Mountains and arid deserts to sandy beaches and lakes.

Home to a large number of parks and gardens, as its reputation as the Garden City promises, the city is also known for its annual Viña del Mar International Song Festival, held in February. Hone your Spanish language skills while experiencing and absorbing all the Chilean culture has to offer through hands-on excursions to nearby Santiago, a trip to Isle Negra - home to the famous Chilean writer Pablo Neruda, or a tour of the Valparaíso Wineries and the grape harvest.

• Established one of Chile’s first environmental engineering programs and is on the forefront of offering internationalization at home

• Enrolls approximately 6,000 students per year

• Recognized by the Chilean Ministry of Education as a degree- granting institution of higher learning

If you are in Viña del Mar during the third week of February, you won’t want to miss the International Song Festival, the most popular music festival in Latin America. This fun and exciting event began 51 years ago as a platform for emerging stars to showcase their talent. The format of the event has shifted from a traditional musical festival to more of an awards show. A pop song and folk song competition takes place, where the audience, known as “The Monster,” decides through their reaction of cheering or booing if the performer wins an award or is taken off stage. International music stars from around the world entertain the audience between the competitive performances. Some stars who have performed in the past include Journey, Nelly Furtado and Earth, Wind & Fire.

Experience Prague, Czech RepublicServing as a major economic and cultural center of the Czech Republic, Prague is a modern city that still retains the original allure of a former age. The Velvet Revolution of November 1989 saw the overthrow of the Communist regime. On January I, 1993, the Czechoslovak state was peacefully divided and the independent Czech and Slovak Republics were founded. The formerly centralized state system has since been transformed into a parliamentary democracy and market economy, with the Czech Republic joining the European Union on May I, 2004.

Today you can walk to school every morning through a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located in the Baroque Malá Strana quarter, Anglo-American University offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in both a Czech and international higher education setting. Participate in AAU activities, sports and clubs, or explore the city with new friends. Don’t forget to check out the Strahov Monastery, Petrin, or the cubist House of the Black Madonna.

Discovered by Greek sailors around 400 BC, it has been popular over the years with the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Coco Chanel, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Pablo Picasso - all regular visitors.

Follow in their illustrious footsteps as you explore the people and culture of the French Riviera, one of the most multi-cultural areas of France. Enjoy excursions to exciting places like Nice, Monte Carlo, Cannes, and St. Tropez. Improve your knowledge of French language and culture through CEA activities such as wine tasting, French cuisine sessions, pottery painting, and perfume making. Spring students also can apply to participate in an internship at the Cannes Film Festival.

Experience Galway, IrelandGalway has more of a small-town and university feel to it than Dublin, and offers easy access to more of the traditional landscapes students might associate with Ireland, including the Cliffs of Moher, Connemara and the Aran Islands. The Irish language thrives amongst the Connemara locals who still speak Irish as their native tongue. The creative arts flourish throughout this bohemian city, with music, theatrical production and literature all contributing to Galway’s humble appeal.

Nicknamed “Ireland’s Cultural Heart,” Galway offers students the ideal opportunity to explore traditional, yet vibrant, Irish culture through numerous festivals, celebrations and events. The city hosts the Galway Arts Festival every July, drawing more than 150,000 people for its International celebration of performing and visual arts. Other events worth attending include the Galway Races in August and the Galway International Oyster Festival in September.

Experience Granada, SpainAuthor Ernest Hemingway once said, “If you were to visit only a city in Spain, this should be Granada.” Granada is a fairytale city, known for its unique historic, artistic and cultural heritage. Some of its most important attractions include the Alhambra Palace, the gardens at the Palacio del Generalife, and arab neighborhood of Albayzín - all declared World Heritage sites by UNESCO. Enjoy the relaxed lifestyle of a smaller urban area and an economy more focused on its universities and students than tourists - the ideal setting to hone your Spanish language skills.

Granada also offers you countless cultural events like flamenco, jazz, tango, film festivals, theater, poetry, a vibrant night life, sophisticated shopping area and traditional markets. Granada is less than an hour from the Mediterranean beaches and the ski resort of Sierra Nevada. Take a break from your studies and escape to the multitude of recreational and cultural attractions that surround the area.

has become my home. Not only

that, but the people that I have met

Experience Madrid, SpainKnown for its innovation in art and culture, Spain’s capital also boasts an abundance of opportunities to engage in the lifestyle of a true madrileño. Spend your days exploring Madrid’s magnificent and historic architecture of the Royal Palace, Santa Cruz Palace or the Telecommunications Palace. Enter the Triangle of Art - Prado Museum, Reina Sofía Museum and the Thyssen Museum- and study the artistic trends that have inspired so many, from classical Velázquez, Goya and El Greco, to Picasso and the most shocking of vanguards, Miquel Barcelo.

When the sun goes down in Madrid, the city streets spill over with people, ready to celebrate and flood the dance floors until the wee hours of the morning. Many historical buildings on Gran Via host most of the cinemas and theaters in town, but you also can find international designers’ shops along ‘’The Golden Mile,” and rooftop bars like the Hotel ME Penthouse.

Experience Seville, SpainWith a population less than I million, Seville represents a more down-to-earth lifestyle and relaxed cultural experience. Located in southern Spain, Seville is considered the guardian of all that is traditional Spanish culture. Seville has a centralized historic district, the largest in Europe, which is very pedestrian friendly. Renowned as the birthplace of Flamenco, Seville also is home to stunning architecture, including the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, La Giralda, and the Alcazar palaces.

Engage in true Seville culture through a myriad of traditional Spanish entertainment, including bullfighting, flamenco dance and festivals, such as Semana Santa and Feria de Abril. Lining the streets are terrace cafes where people meet to enjoy their afternoon café con leche. Sunbathe by the river banks and relax at a local tapas bar to enjoy good food and conversation after a day of strolling through the shaded, winding alleyways of the Barrio Santa Cruz, the old Jewish quarter.

Parent Section

When it comes to study abroad, students aren’t the only ones embarking on this eye-opening journey. As a parent, you play a crucial role in your student’s experience and should be looped in on key, need-to-know essentials of CEA’s study abroad services. While the guidance and support from our advising team helps students take a proactive approach in planning their experience, the same guidance is available to parents of CEA students. Here’s a crash course in studying abroad with CEA:

Study Abroad 101 – the Basics

Budgets – What am I Getting for My Buck?

• CEA’s program prices include tuition and fees, housing and meal options, transfer credit, overseas staff, pre-departure information, airport welcome reception, on site orientation, immersion activities, excursions, volunteer, opportunities and more.

• In addition to the program price, students should budget for airfare, travel insurance, school supplies, entertainment, food and any additional travel they plan on doing abroad.

Visa v. Passport – What’s the Difference?

• ApassportisanidentificationdocumentissuedbytheU.S. government that proves you are a U.S. citizen and authorized to leave the country (your student NEEDS one of these to study abroad).

• A visa is issued by the consulate of the foreign country in which your student is studying abroad and grants him or her permission to enter and stay in the country. Students can provide you with a detailed visa guidelines document from their MyCEA Account should you want more information.

Parent PrepAlthough it may not seem like it, parents and guardians experience a bit of culture shock themselves when their student studies abroad. Whether you’re a hands-on or hands-off parent, your ability to directly assist your student during study abroad is limited. Maintain peace of mind by following these tips:

• Because your student is 18 or older, and a legal adult, make sure he/she gives CEA permission to discuss with you the information in their MyCEA Account.

• Makesureyourstudenthasprovidedyouwithseveraldifferentcontactmethods,includingtheCEAofficeintheU.S.andonsite, your student’s home and cell phone numbers, and an e-mail address.

• Understand that life abroad is different than back at home – housing tends to be smaller, internet strength tends to be limited and air conditioning is not the norm – but differences like these are part of the adventure! Encourage your student to embrace the differences. With your support, they are more likely to adjust in less time.

• Have a copy of your student’s passport and a valid passport of your own.
