There are strict rules. The players can touch the ball, but they are not allowed to throw it. They have to pass the ball from hand to hand to other players. They also have to bounce or kick it when they run with it. They have to score goals to get points for their team.

In Gaelic football the players do not wear special clothes. They put on shorts and T-shirts and trainers, but they don’t need any special equipment like helmets or gloves. To play the game they don’t use sticks, bats or rackets. They just need a ball.

The first international tournament took place in 1886 in Ireland. However, today Gaelic football is quite popular in the USA and Australia.

The life of George Orwell

George Orwell was born in India in 1903. When he was four years old, his mother took him and his sister back to England but his father stayed in India.

In England, the young boy had a private teacher but it was difficult for his parents to find the money to pay for it. He was lucky later – when he was thirteen he won a scholarship to Eton College but he was not a very good student.

He always thought of becoming a writer. When he was eleven, he wrote a poem about World War I. This poem was very good and it appeared in the local newspaper.

George had a difficult but interesting life. For a long time he couldn’t find a well-paid job. He lived in Paris and London but because he didn’t have much money he had to stay in poor parts of these cities. In London he even lived in the street for some time. These years helped him to write his first book called Down and Out in Paris and London, published in 1933. In 1936 George went to Spain to write for newspapers about the Civil War. Three years later he wanted to join the army to fight in World War II but he was very ill and couldn’t become a soldier. He decided to work for the BBC and in 1945 he published Animal Farm. After the war he moved to Scotland where he wrote his final book, Nineteen Eighty-Four.He died in London in 1950. He was only forty-seven.

A When you dream about going places, where does your mind take you? The Grand Canyon, Africa or New York? If you spend time looking at the stars, you’ll notice a bright one that’s a bit red. This is Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun. But mainly, it’s the next place humans are going to explore.

B Mars is so much like the Earth that we want to go there and see what happened. Where did the water go? When we look at pictures of Mars, we see places where there was water a long time ago, for example big canyons and ice caps at the north and south poles of Mars.

C Our planets are very similar. But something happened on Mars to make the water disappear and make it a cold place with a very thin atmosphere. So, we’re sending robots equipped with special instruments to Mars to study the planet’s environment and look for signs of life. It’s going to take years, and there’s a lot to do.

D Scientists have organised international expeditions to Mars. We all remember Mars Pathfinder that landed on Mars on 4th July 1997. It sent back about 17,000 pictures of the red planet.

Karaoke

Karaoke was created 30 years ago in the city of Kobe, Japan. (1) It actually means ‘empty orchestra’ and was originally popular with businessmen who wanted to relax after a day’s work. With time, however, karaoke has become extremely popular and it is now a hit in bars, restaurants, hotels, parties and even at weddings!

Today a lot of karaoke fans prefer to buy CDs including special karaoke versions of the songs by (2) their favourite artist. They also often use karaoke players available on the Internet. That way, they have the opportunity to practise singing at home before (3) they show their talents in front of others.

In twenty years karaoke’s popularity has spread far beyond Japan and (4) it has got to the rest of the Far East, North America and Europe. It appears that the rest of the world also enjoys the idea of having a drink and song among friends! Anywhere friends or family meet for a good time, they enjoy holding the microphone and singing along with the music. (5) It is so much fun!
