Practicum Evaluation Results

a. School Counselingi. Recommended changes – Overall the data supports no significant change at this time. One addition the committee has recommended is to again review the advanced skill set of techniques during Internship.ii. Highlighted strengths - Data shows that students are strong in all areas. The strongest of these areas are rapport building, empathetically responding to clients and being non-judgmental.

Internship Evaluation Resultsb. Community Counseling

◦ i. Recommended changes – All areas were in the acceptable range for this area. Specific recommendations include increased student opportunities to work with intake interviews and with mental status exam. Additionally the committee recommends that students receive information on financial and organization structures of agencies and private practices. Lastly the committee recommends additional work for students diversifying their therapeutic interventions.

◦ ii. Highlighted strengths - Have knowledge and demonstrate skills in in working with individuals. Students are self-motivated and complete tasks in a timely way. Students demonstrate knowledge and use of ethical standards.

◦i. Recommended changes – Increase opportunity to address ethical issues in practice specific to the comprehensive exam.

◦ii. Highlighted strengths – Students demonstrated the ability to use the concepts and components of a comprehensive guidance program. Additionally students’ writing was a highlight.

◦ i. Recommended changes – Review exam and consider either changing question number eight which measures the knowledge regarding counseling outcome research and its implications for professional practice.

◦ ii. Highlighted strengths – Students demonstrated a foundation in counseling knowledge that prepares them to adapt to changing needs of the individual, group, and family. Students also demonstrated an understanding of case conceptualization and treatment and case planning.

Graduate Survey Resultsa. Recommended changes – An

area of improvement was identified in providing knowledge as how to treat individuals with specific needs.

b. Highlighted strengths – Highlighted responses included the professional competence of the program faculty, knowledge in multicultural counseling, and skill in small group dynamics and counseling.

Site Supervisor Survey Results

a. Recommended changes – Knowledge in special needs populations was again addressed here. Discussion included a review of how this information is presented. Determination was made that faculty language is more likely “diverse population” which includes special needs than just specifically special needs populations.

b. Highlighted strengths – Personal attributes of the students were all highlighted.

to prepare students better to take exam.b. Highlighted strengths – The areas of

Social & Cultural Diversity, Career Development, Research and Program Evaluation, Counseling Process, and Professional Development, Supervision, and Consultation have all improved. In the fall of 2012 10 out of 10 of our students taking the exam at UNK passed.

Actions taken a. Committee has made changes in the curriculum, specific to

Advanced Practicum CSP 886, to address the need for practice with intake interviews and with mental status exam. (Internship)

b. Students will receive information on financial and organization structures of agencies and private practices in CSP 862, Administration and Consultation in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. (Internship)

c. Advance Practicum has been designed to offer students additional opportunities to diversify their therapeutic interventions. (Internship)

d. Reviewed comprehensive exam and changed question number eight which measures the knowledge regarding counseling outcome research and its implications for professional practice. Question now asks students to speak to empirically based practices as they respond to the case study. (Comprehensive Exam)

e. Continue to prepare students better to take exam. Evaluation method has changed both in Career and Group to better prepare student for this exam. Additionally, preparation work is now done in both Seminar in Counseling and Internship in Counseling. Lastly, several new resources have been purchased and are available for student use in the library. (NBCC Results)

f. Changed course structure to allow for student choice. Both Appraisal and Career will be offered face to face alternating semesters and then online the opposite semester. (2012 Student Survey)
