with emphasis on transportation planning concepts and multi-modal design elements. 3 lec.

Textbook: Wright and Ashford, Transportation Engineering, 1998 (4th Edition) Wiley Reference: Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices - Ohio Department of

Transportation, A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets - AASHTO.

Coordinator: Lloyd A. Herman, Ph.D., P.E., Associate Professor Office: 122 Stocker Center Hours: MWF 10am -12pm Email: [email protected] Phone: 593-1472 Prerequisites by topic:

    1. Horizontal Alignment 2. Vertical Alignment 3. Horizontal Curve Design 4. Vertical Curve Design

Topics: 1. Introduction (1 class) 2. Transportation systems and Agencies (1 class) 3. Transportation Planning (2 classes) 4. Transportation Studies (1 class) 5. Traffic Impact Analysis (1 class) 6. Environmental Planning (1 class) 7. Vehicle and Driver Characteristics (1 class) 8. Horizontal Sight Distance (1 class) 9. Vertical Sight Distance (1 class) 10. Sight Distance Consideration for Design (1 class) 11. Drainage Design (3 classes) 12. Pavement Design (2 classes) 13. Rail Mode (2 classes) 14. Air Mode (5 classes) Course Outcomes: The course outcomes are related to the skills and knowledge that you should obtain from this course. These outcomes are part of the undergraduate teaching outcomes of the Civil Engineering department. The outcomes for this course are: 1c.) You will be provided with background and skills in engineering.

In this course you will learn to apply engineering principles to solve analysis and

  • design problems related to transportation engineering projects. 1e.) You will be provided with background and skills in design.

In this course you will learn to design the horizontal and vertical alignment for the highway mode based on the safety consideration of sight distance. You will learn the fundamentals of passenger rail system design, and airport runway design. In addition you will learn fundamental principles of drainage design for all modes, and pavement design for the highway mode.

2a.) You will be provided with a learning environment that fosters functioning on multidisciplinary teams. In this course you will be a member of a design team. You will learn to work together

to assume the responsibilities of planning, organizing, carrying out the work, and reporting the results of a design project.

2c.) You will be provided with a learning environment that fosters effective oral and written communication. As a member of a design team you will improve your skills in oral and written

communication by writing technical documents and giving an oral presentation for your team project.

4.) You will be exposed to state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice facilities/equipment In this course you will use state-of-the-art equipment to collect topographical data

for your design project. Further, you will use state-of-the-art computer software to facilitate your project design.

    Grading: Hw/quizzes, etc. 15%

    Midterm 25% Design Team 30%

Final Exam 30% Grades will be assigned according to the 12 point system given in the Ohio University Student Handbook. Policies: Attendance: Attendance at examinations and presentations is mandatory, except when officially excused prior to the exam or presentation for reasons listed under "Notification of Causes of Absence" in the Student Handbook. Attendance at class lectures is optional [Note: Each student is responsible for all topics discussed in class lectures. Attendance is a factor in "class participation"] Academic Misconduct: The penalty for any act of academic misconduct (as described in the Student Handbook) may range from a lowered grade for the work in question to a failure in the course, and /or formal disciplinary action including suspension or expulsion from the university.
