Scholarships Available
This is a listing of few examples of scholarships that are available for Aboriginal students seeking post-secondary education. The list is not at all inclusive. There are plenty of places to look for information.
Some of the Internet sites that were useful in constructing this list were:

Keep in mind, you should not limit yourself to Aboriginal scholarship designations. There arenumerous scholarships offered by companies and organizations that award financial aid, which maybe applicable to you.
Be sure to contact the university that you are planning to attend and find out what is available there.
If you have a parent who works for a company, be sure to check if that company offers scholarships toemployee dependents.

Organizational Scholarships
There are several organizations across Canada that offer scholarships to students in science. Thereare some that specifically mention natural resources or forestry, but for the most part, they generally fall into thecategory of science. Some examples of such scholarships are listed below:
Aboriginal Veterans Scholarship Trust
The Aboriginal Veterans Scholarships will be open to all Aboriginal people, including Status and Non-Status Indians, Inuit, and Metis. For Aboriginal students in a community college or CEGEPdiploma or certificate program, undergraduate program, professional degree program or masters or doctoral program in fields of study including but not limited to business, finance, public administration, natural resource management and environmental studies.
The Shoppers Drug Mart Scholarship
Offers support to committed post-secondary students who require assistance in order to completetheir education. This scholarship supports Aboriginal students in every field and every level of study.
Shell Canada Aboriginal Scholarship Program
Encouraging Aboriginal students to pursue education, especially in the areas of business, science, and engineering.Available to Canadian Aboriginal peoples. The deadline is June 15th.
National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation (NAAF)
NAAF is a nationally registered charity with mandate to provide financial support to Aboriginal youth who arepursuing education and professional development to prepare for careers in the arts, health sciences, business, andgeneral science and other areas of study related to economic self-reliance and self-government.

The Canadian Aboriginal Science and Technology Society (CASTS)
This scholarship is made available to students pursuing secondary education in the sciences andmathematics, engineering, health-related fields, and natural resources. Programs of study may be two to four years or longer. There are five scholarships worth $2,000 each. The Deadline is June 30th.

Ontario Aboriginal Partnerships Recognition Scholarship
Working Partnerships is a program of the Ontario Native Affairs Secretariat and part of the OntarioAboriginal economic development strategy, Building Aboriginal Economies. Working Partnershipspromotes corporate/partnership development, job creation, and economic opportunities for Aboriginalpeople. The scholarship was created to assist those pursuing post-secondary studies that will preparethem for jobs in the fields of business, science, and technology. Royal Canadian Geographical Society Studentships
This scholarships is valued at $10,000 and is available to Aboriginal youth in northern geographicalresearch at a Canadian university.
Applicants should include university transcripts with their applications. No other documents will beaccepted. Applications sent by fax will not be accepted. Deadline is January 31st.
Etuangat Inuit History Prize
Awarded for the best essay about an interesting event or circumstance in Inuit history written in Inuktitut, English or French by an Inuit student registered at any Canadian university or college.The essay (1500-3000 words) must be on an Inuit elder’s story, obtained from either and original orpreviously taped interview.
Cooperative Bursary
Arctic Co-operatives Ltd., the NWT Cooperative Business Development Fund, and the Canadian Northern Studies Trust offer a bursary (normally valued at $2,000) to support a student whose studies will contribute to the understanding and development of cooperatives in the NorthernTerritories. The award may be held concurrently with a special bursary for northern residents. The deadline is January 31st.
James W. Bourque Studentship in Northern Geography
Normally applications will be from students in geography departments, however, careful consideration will be givento students in closely related fields whose study have significance for advancing the knowledge and appreciationof the geography of northern regions.
Special Bursaries for Northern Residents
These bursaries allow persons who are northern residents and in need of financial assistance to engage in aneducational experience at a degree-granting institution anywhere in Canada. It is the objective of these awards topermit individuals who were born and raised in northern Canada to undertake studies at a college or university,leading to a diploma or degree in a field of concern to themselves and other people in the North.
Caribou Research Bursary
These awards are normally valued at $1,000 - $2,000 each and can be held concurrently with theCNST Special Award for Northern Residents. The awards are open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents ofCanada, who are full-time students enrolled in a recognized Canadian community college or university and whosestudies will contribute to the understanding of Barren Ground Caribou and their habitat.
Special Bursaries for Northern Residents
These awards allow northern residents to engage in an educational experience at a degree-grantinginstitution in Canada. The objective is to permit northerners to study in a field of interest that willfurther the careers in the north or assist their local communities.
AISES - A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship
AISES’ own scholarship program was established in 1983 in memory of A.T. Anderson (Mohawk), a chemicalengineer who founded AISES with six other American Indian scientists. Scholarships are awarded to members ofAISES who are American Indian/Alaskan Native college students pursuing academic programs in the sciences,engineering, medicine, natural resources, and math. The deadline is June 15th.
EPA Tribal Lands Environmental Science Scholarship
Administered for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, this scholarship is provided to college juniors, seniors,and graduate students majoring in environmental science disciplines. Applicants who are not selected as recipientswill be given consideration in the A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship program, if all criteria is met. The deadline isJune 15th.
Bureau of Reclamation Scholarship and Internship
The scholarship is available to undergraduate students seeking a Bachelors degree in engineering or science, relatingto water resources or an environmentally-related field. Applicants who are not selected as recipients will be givenconsideration in the A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship program, if all criteria is met. This scholarship is jointlyfunded by the Bureau of Reclamation and the National Water Resources Institute. The deadline is June 15th.
Aboriginal Scholarship
As an Aboriginal student you are eligible to apply for the Aboriginal scholarship of $11,500.

Sahtu Renewable Resources Board
The Sahtu Renewable Resources Board has established a scholarship/bursary program for post-secondary students in a field related to the SRRB’s mandate. An Aboriginal person pursuing a collegediploma or university degree, or a minimum of 2year certificate program in renewable resources or a related field inbiology, forestry, or environmental science. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
NSERC is encouraging Aboriginal participation in four different awards programs. These programs are open to allInuit, Metis, Status and Non-Status First Nation People.
The Undergraduate Student Research Awards in Universities (USRA) program offers qualified undergraduate students the opportunity to work on a challenging research project ina university or industrial environment for up to four months ($4,500 + university contributionfor 16 weeks). This is a great summer job opportunity for students registered in an honours bachelor’s degree program in natural sciences or engineering.
Industry Postgraduate Scholarship (IPGS) program provides financial support for highlyqualified science and engineering grads. Must have a degree in science or engineering and be pursuing full-time or part-time grad studies in the natural sciences or engineering program at a Canadian university.
The Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) program provides financial assistance for up to four years to students pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in the natural sciences or engineering program.
The Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF) program provides financial support for up to two yearsto the most promising young researchers in the natural sciences and engineering program.
The University Faculty Awards (UFA) program is open to any Inuit, Metis, Status and Non-Status First Nation people who are being considered for university by faculty positions. Thisprogram makes a substantial contribution, for up to five years, to the salary of each successfulcandidate nominated by a Canadian university.

Ontario Power Generation John Wesley Beaver Awards
Awards 2 students of native ancestry entering an Ontario college or university (except Lakehead). It is equal to oneyear’s college or university tuition. Made available to Aboriginal students in the engineering, technology,environmental studies, forestry, biology, land use and environmental planning and business.
Jeff Styers and Family Effort Award
This award is given by Jeff Styers, a Six Nations member. it is open to Six Nations members whoare attending a post secondary program of study on a full time basis. This program must result in a recognized diploma or degree. Program of study must be a minimum of two years in length.
The Isaac Durham First Scholarship Fund
This scholarship is provided in accordance with the provisions of the will of Vera Durham. Recipients of the scholarship will have all documentation filed with the Estates Administration Department of the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee, Ministry of the Attorney General. Awarded to a Six Nations member with the highest marks for entrance into a university undergraduate program inOntario. Awarded every three years for three years.

University Scholarships
Elizabeth Beckman Scholarship in Natural Resources Conservation
A $1,000 scholarship to an undergraduate student in the fourth year of the natural resources conservationprogramme in the Faculty of Forestry. First preference will be given to First Nation students.
Emily & Francis Binkley Scholarship
A $2,300 scholarship to an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Forestry. Preference is given to First Nation students and then to female students in any program offered by the Faculty of Forestry.
Janet Ketcham Scholarship
A $1,000 scholarship is offered to a First Nations student in the Faculty of Forestry on the recommendationof the Faculty.
Tommy Burgess Memorial Forestry Bursary
2 bursaries for $1,300 each for forestry students.
Ian T. Cameron Memorial Bursary
A $1,020 bursary is available each year to a needy student in the Faculty of Forestry. Preference to studentswho have been active in the Junior Forest Warden Program, Boy Scouts or Girl Guides.
CANFOR Corporation Bursary
Bursaries totalling $8,000 awarded to students proceeding in a full program of studies to an undergraduate degree as follows: forestry, engineering and commerce and business administration. Will be given tostudents with satisfactory academic records and who have a need for financial assistance.

These bursaries, valued up to $10,000 each, allow persons who are northern residents and in need of financialassistance to engage in an educational experience at a degree granting institution in Canada.
