NASA intends to start space travel both to the Moon and Mars soon. If humans begin to
travel to other planets, we’re going to need food and that means finding a way to grow
fruits and vegetables in such environments.
The agency has picked a new eatable plant to be grown aboard the International Space
Station and it’s a seriously spicy selection.
NASA has selected the Española chile pepper to be its next space crop project. While such
peppers are often thought to be vegetables, they’re actually fruits and this means the chile
pepper will be the first fruit ever grown by NASA in space.
Picking plants to grow in space — especially when it comes to potential food options for
future missions — has to be done carefully. There are many things to consider, including
whether or not a plant will provide suitable nutritional benefits for astronauts, not to
mention the individual necessities of each plant in terms of water and mineral usage.
18. We learn from the passage that …
a. There are crop fields in the space.
b. Actually peppers are vegetables.
c. NASA has a team of farmers to be sent to space.
d. Chile pepper will be the first fruit in space.
e. It is easy to pick a plant to be grown in space.
19. It is clear from the passage that plants must be picked according to …
a. nutritional benefits.

A new report claims most of the meat that people eat will not come from dead animals by
the year 2040. Global consultancy firm AT Kearney conducted the report based on
interviews with industry experts, who predict that 60% of the meat products we consume in
2040 will either be plant-based replacements or cultured alternatives. The report suggests
that the transition will be the result of a growing awareness of the environmental
consequences of conventional meat farming methods and the rising demand for vegan
alternatives. It defines cultured meat as a type of meat that is created in labs and does not
involve animal slaughter.
21. According to the passage it is predicted that …
a. meat consumption will be much less by 2040.
b. experts in meat industry support plant-based diets.

Calorie restriction is typically associated with weight loss. But the results of a research
suggest that a lower-calorie diet may bring other health benefits, even for people who are
not trying to lose weight. A study indicates that cutting just 300 calories a day, while
maintaining a healthy diet, can have significant effects on health. Researchers selected 218
healthy, non-obese adults aged 21-50 for this study. 150 of the participants were in the diet
group and 68 were in the control group. The diet group went on a controlled diet and
reduced their normal calorie intake by 25% for a month. After the first month of the study,
the diet group changed their calorie reduction to 12% rather than 25% and maintained it
over two years. On the other hand, the control group continued their normal diets. The
results were interesting. Participants in the diet group lost about 10% of their body weight
on average. More importantly, the researchers found significant improvements in
cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels of this group. Calorie restriction also
has the potential to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases like diabetes and heart
disease in the future. On the other hand, the control group didn’t see any of these benefits.

health.
b. The more a person reduces calorie intake, the healthier he or she may
become.
c. Calorie counting is the most important measure of health.
d. For most people, it’s quite easy to cut calories per day without a radical
change.

For years, researchers have tried to find the reasons behind a long and healthy life. The
answer is probably a mix of good genes, diet, and exercise, but studies suggest that finding
meaning in life is also a key factor. The findings show that having a sense of purpose can
help a person to build a happy and active life. In Japan, the secret to a longer, happier, and
more successful life can be summarized in one word: Ikigai. The ikigai lifestyle is
especially practiced in Okinawa in Japan and it is among the places where people live the
longest in the world. In Japanese, iki means “to live” and gai means “reason” — in other
words, your reason to live. İkigai dates back to the Heian period (A.D. 794 to 1185), but it
has gained attention from millions around the world in the past years. There’s no single
way to find your ikigai, but you can start by asking a few simple questions: What makes
you happy? What are you good at? What (and who) do you value? What motivates you to
get up in the morning? Ken Mogi, a Japanese neuroscientist, suggests some tips to let your
ikigai grow: start with small steps, learn more about yourself, maintain your life in
harmony with your environment, try to find joy in small things and, finally, focus on the
here and now. Finding your ikigai will take time, but it is certainly worth that.
21. According to the passage, which one of the following is true about Ikigai?
a. It can simply be defined as a reason for living.
b. It is the single most powerful factor to one’s health and liveliness.
c. Without it, people experience continuing physical health problems.
d. It is about having healthy genes, great diets and lifestyle activities.
e. It was found as a result of long scientific research for long life.
22. According to the passage, to find your ikigai you should...
a. have a clear goal in mind.
b. do the compulsory tasks in daily life.
c. go into a deep and long search of yourself.
d. feel attracted by something.
e. stay curious and ask questions to learn more.
23. What can be the best title for the passage?
