C’est avec un grand plaisir que je m’adresse à toute lacommunauté du CDL, à l’occasion de cette 5ème Newsletter,quelques instants avant que le calendrier ne nous invite auxbelles retrouvailles de fin d’année, pour égrener les heuresmarquantes de ce premier trimestre écoulé… Au sein de la section secondaire francophone, notre ambitiond’associer excellence académique et épanouissement individuelest inscrite au cœur de notre projet pédagogique… Notreattention est constamment mobilisée pour améliorer la qualitéde la préparation des élèves aux examens si exigeants duBaccalauréat français et de la Maturité suisse bilingue. Ainsi,dans le cadre de la réforme du Baccalauréat engagée pour lapromotion 2012-2013, nous avons organisé dans denombreuses matières, de concert avec les autres écoles duGESBF (Groupement des écoles suisses préparant auBaccalauréat français), des sessions de formation desprofesseurs en compagnie d’experts membres de jurys et decommissions d’harmonisation des sujets et des consignesd’évaluation.

CDL, a large familyI am extremely pleased to address the whole CDL communityas part of this 5th newsletter, a few days before the start of thefestive season, which will permit us to catch up on the timegiven to our work over the first term. Within the secondary Francophone programme, our ambition tocombine academic excellence and personal development is atthe heart of our educational mission. Our effort is continuallymobilized to improve the quality of our students’ preparationfor the French Baccalaureate and the Swiss Bilingual Maturity,which are both very challenging examinations. As part of thereform of the Baccalaureate affecting the 2012-2013 class,together with other member schools of the GESBF(Groupement des écoles suisses préparant au Baccalauréatfrançais) we have organized training sessions for teachers inthe presence of expert jury members and of the harmonizationcommittees for subject and assessment guidelines.

PréscolaireIPC Topic : Qui suis-je? Depuis septembre les élèves des classes de PS3 se posent unequestion bien philosophique ! Qui suis-je?

Ils ont cherché à y répondre par le biais d’un travail en art,sciences, géographie, éducation physique, musique et parl’étude de notre société internationale.

Nous sommes partis de ce que les enfants savaient d’euxmême pour éveiller leur curiosité puis suscitant lequestionnement et la recherche, nous les avons conduits à laformulation d’hypothèses, à l’observation, à l’expérimentation

et à la recherche de documentation. Les enfants se sontappropriés progressivement des concepts scientifiques, ils ontenrichi leur expression orale et répondu à beaucoup desquestions.

Since September, PS3 students have been working on a ratherphilosophical question! Who am I?They tried answering it through various activities in art,science, geography, physical education and music classes, aswell as by studying the international dimension of our society.

We started off with what the children knew of themselves tostimulate their curiosity. We have guided them through theformulation of hypotheses, observation, experimentation andresearch. The students have gradually acquired scientificconcepts; they have enriched their language skills andanswered many interesting questions.

Our defending champions, BoysVarsity Team and the Boys Moyens Varsity Team both won the1st Place Cups in the final of the ADISR Championship. TheMoyens won 1-0 against Le Rosey and the Varsity 2-1 alsoagainst Le Rosey. Both teams went undefeated for the season.Congratulations to all the players and Coaches Pierre andCowell.The Varsity Girls beat Champittet 3-2. Our team finished 3rd inthe ADISR Championship. Special mention to both teams fortheir toughness,playing this game in the cold and snow on avery muddy field. RUNNING: Well done to the 300 students/staff and parentswho participated in the Escalade running event. There weremore than 33,000 runners in the event, which is the largestrace in Switzerland. Our school finished in an excellent 6th

place out of 33 schools in the overall team standings. Specialmention of thanks to the PFA and the many students for theoutstanding organization. MERITAS GAMES: Our Middle School Team represented ourschool with excellence and pride both on and off the field in theMeritas Games which was held in Orlando Fl. USA., Our boyssoccer team won the silver medals and the girls the bronze.The boys basketball team placed 6th. Special mention toAnnouk G for her 4 gold medals in track/field, George M-K forgold in the mile and Tavian E. for winning the tennistournament.

FOOTBALL : Double victoire ! Nos deux équipeschampionnes en titre, les Boys Varsity et les Moyens BoysVarsity sont sorties victorieuses de la finale du championnatADISR. Les moyens ont battu 1 à 0 l’équipe du Rosey et lesVarsity ont gagné 2 à 1 contre le Rosey également. Nos deuxéquipes terminent ainsi la saison sans défaite ! Félicitations àtous les joueurs ainsi qu’à nos deux entraineurs Pierre etCowell.L’équipe féminine Varsity a battu Champittet 3 à 2. Notreéquipe se classe ainsi 3ème du championnat ADISR. Bravo auxdeux équipes pour leur résistance, qui leur a permis de jouermalgré le froid et la neige, sur un terrain très boueux.

COURSE : Bravo aux 300 étudiants et aux membres dupersonnel qui ont participé à la course de l’escalade. Plus de33,000 coureurs ont participé à cet évènement, ce qui en fait laplus grande course de Suisse. Notre école a terminé à la 6ème

place, sur un total de 33 écoles inscrites. Merci beaucoup auPFA et aux nombreux étudiants qui ont mis en place uneexcellente organisation.

MERITAS GAMES : Notre équipe Middle School / 1er cycle aporté haut les couleurs du CDL durant les Meritas Games qui sesont tenus à Orlando aux États-Unis cette semaine. Notreéquipe masculine de football a gagné la médaille d’argent, etles filles ont décroché le bronze. L’équipe masculine debasketball a terminé 6ème. Nous tenons à féliciter Anouk pourses 4 médailles d’or en athlétisme, George M-K pour samédaille d’or en course. Et Tavian E. pour sa victoire au tournoide tennis.

Interview with Coach Cowell

Tuesday evening was memorable for CDL’s footballteams. Can you tell us a little bit more about whathappened?It was a fantastic evening with both the Boys Varsity and theBoys Moyen Varsity teams winning the final game of the ADISRChampionship against Le Rosey! It is actually the second yearin a row that they have both won the competition. We have twovery good teams and Coach Pierre even says that the currentVarsity team is the best team we’ve had in 12 years! They playa high class of football and both teams have a very good spirit.

Who is coaching the teams, are you working togetherwith Coach Pierre?Yes, I am actually the head coach of the Moyen Varsity teamand Pierre is the head coach of the Varsity team. We workclosely together and it goes very well, we both have the samephilosophy in the way we play and coach.

How did the games go? Can you compare with last year?I think that the Moyen Varsity did not play to their fullpotential. The game was very different from last year; we hada good contrast in terms of style although both finals wereagainst Le Rosey. The boys were not expecting to play againstLe Rosey and thought that the final would be against LaChâtaigneraie. This probably had an impact on their state ofmind as I found them a bit too relaxed! At the end of normaltime it was still 0-0 and it was only towards the end of thesecond period of additional time that they won thanks to VictorRijke’s free kick!The Varsity Boys scored quite early in the game with abeautiful free kick from Romeo Charron, but then they made adefensive mistake and let Le Rosey score. After that we prettymuch controlled the game and won 2-1 thanks to StefenMendes’ goal direct from a corner.

Did the weather impact on the teams’ performance?The weather was horrible and it was certainly not an easygame. It was windy, rainy and even snowy at some point! Thesurface was very slippery and it was quite hard to play goodfootball. But despite the horrible conditions a full bus ofsupporters came to cheer the boys until the very end!

Middle School

Dear parents,

There has been a lot happening in Middle School over the pastweek. Not only did our successful Meritas Games team returnfrom Orlando bronzed and happy from their achievements, butwe have also experienced wonderful Grade 7/5ème concerts onTuesday night and an enthusiastic Dance Showcase onWednesday. The House MAO Competition has been launched,and students are already competing with each other in thecategories of Spelling, Mathematics, Geography, Oration,Declamation, Music Performance and Chess. On the personalfront, students involved in any of the above events should becollecting evidence of their participation in these events toplace in their Portfolios (e.g. concert programmes, photos,written reflections, etc).

Of course, parents should now have received the MarkingPeriod 1 Reports. In addition to the usual 'post-mortem' heldbetween parent and student about the report card, studentsshould be noting down their own strengths and weaknessesand taking these notes to school to include in their PLP(Personal Learning Plan) which should be starting to takeshape.

Finally, I would urge parents to take a few minutes now tohave a look at what Middle School students have done on theCollege website with their videos and images (under thesupervision of Mr Paul Barrow – videos, and Mrs Amy Lu – stillphotos – this work is done during their Grade 7 and 8 Optionsclasses. To enjoy these very professional presentations, please:

2. Leave the Middle School page, and go to Admissions(Bus Service) to see a good video of the buses (directlink here).
