The Boarding Committee did a great job of organising the event, and everyone had a lot of fun. Boarding - Pumpkin Carving Running : The 35 th edition of the traditional ESCALADE RACE through the old town of Geneva will take place on Saturday Dec.1. This running event is the second largest in Switzerland with more than 25,000 participants. IMPORTANT! : Please take note that the deadline has passed to register with the school. However, there is a last chance registration possibility at the event stand at the Place du Molard until the 10 th . Last week our young Junior Team came in second in the Junior Varsity ADISR competition. The J.V. Boys achieved the bronze medals in this same competition and will be participating in the ADISR next Wednesday. Coach Valentine returned to CDL a very proud coach, not only for the excellent results, but more importantly for the effort and enthusiasm of the teams. The Varsity boys will be in action this weekend. Extra- curricular sports program number 2: The main new team sports to be offered will be Floor Hockey and Varsity Girls Basketball. La fondation Phénix est intervenue dans les classes de 3ème les 5, 8et 9 novembre afin de discuter de la prévention des addictions etdes conduites à risques.

National Honors Society

On the 11th of October, Collège du Léman held the annual NationalHonors Society Induction Ceremony. Twenty-five exemplary members ofthe student body were individually selected into this prestigious studentrun organization. The Director General, Mr. Thézé, the Director ofSecondary Studies, Mr. Bearblock, and the NHS Advisor, Ms. Tawfik,gave speeches highlighting the history and symbolism of the NationalHonor Society. The members of the Executive Board each gave a speechand lit a candle symbolizing the four pillars of the NHS. The night was asplendid success and ended with aperitifs and beautiful music.

Le 11 octobre dernier le Collège du Léman a organisé la cérémonieannuelle d'intronisation de la National Honor Society. Vingt-cinq élèvesexemplaires ont été individuellement sélectionnés dans cette prestigieuseassociation d'élèves. Le directeur général, M. Thézé, le directeur desétudes secondaire, M. Bearblock, et la conseillère du NHS, Mlle. Tawfik,ont chacun prononcé quelques mots sur l’histoire et la symbolique de laNational Honor Society. Les membres du comité de direction ont ensuitefait un discours puis ont allumé une bougie symbolisant les quatre piliersdu NHS. La soirée a été un franc succès et s’est conclue avec un apéritiftout en musique.

Middle School

Camp ProgramOur Middle School students participated in challenging activities run byvillage Camps in 3 spectacular districts: Grade 6/6ème students trekked alot as they focused on the Geography and History of the Alpine areaaround Saas Fee. The Grade 7/5ème students learned how to climb inTorgon. The Grade 8/4ème students spent time in caves, gorges andcanoes. It was a week to make new friends, experience new activitiesand learn outside the students' usual classroom environment and everystudent grabbed the opportunity to do just that. Halloween DanceGreat fun was held by all at the Middle School Halloween Danceorganized by the Middle School Student Government on 17th October. Students dressed scarily, and took part in the ‘Haunted House’ activity runby NHS. Parents and staff were on hand to serve food and supervise thedance.

House Halloween EventOn the last afternoon before the October Break, students enjoyedactivities which had a Halloween theme. There was the ‘eyeball andspoon’ race, sack races, ‘Halloween hangman’, and other fun eventsorganized by the House Committee. Who will ever forget the ‘Limbo’activity at the end, when Yellow House stole the points!

1. ‘ZOA Lock-in’, a charity event in which Middle School studentsspend a night at the school in relative poverty (eating a blandmeal, no access to TV or electronics, sleeping on the floor of theCervin Auditorium) in order to raise funds for an Africanorphanage. This will be on Friday 16th November.

2. St Cecilia’s Day Concert featuring musicians from the wholeschool, including Middle School - to be held on Thursday 22nd

November.

Preheat oven to 350ºF. Whisk together flour, baking soda andsalt. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat butter,shortening and both sugars until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.Beat in eggs and vanilla.

With mixer on low speed, gradually add flour mixture to buttermixture. Stir in oats, then chocolate, walnuts, raisins, cherries andcoconut.

Line two rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper. Scoopdough into 2-Tbsp. balls and place several inches apart onbaking sheets. Bake, rotating pans halfway through, until cookiesare lightly browned, 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes onbaking sheets on wire racks, then transfer cookies to wire racksto cool completely. Repeat with remaining dough.

High School

The end of the first marking period is scheduled for November 16th.Students performance review meetings will be held on Monday,November 26th. Reports will be posted to parents on November 28th. Ifthere are any academic concerns regarding your son’s or daughter’sperformance, you will be contacted in writing by the High School office.

Annual Gift Boxes Appeal: The Make A Difference Society (MADS) isonce again making and collecting gift boxes for under privileged children

in Eastern Europe. Details for what to include in the boxes can beobtained from Ms Ross in the High School office or on the CAS & REACHcourses on Moodle. The final date for depositing the boxes is Tuesday20th November. They can be left in Cervin 215.

REACH: Many students are really progressing well with their REACHprojects. They must get their signed forms to their advisors next week atthe latest. All students in Grades 9 and 10 must enroll on the REACHMoodle course since they will then receive emails concerning newactivities available.

Le vendredi 12 octobre, les élèves de Grade3/CE2 ont participé à lamarche des enfants de l’ONU qui a permis de récupérer des fonds pourdes œuvres caritatives.

On Friday October 12th, grade3 and CE2 students participated in theChildren’s UN walk, organised by the UN Women’s Guild. The theme was‘Children walking for children’.

Les élèves des 3 classes de CE2 sont allés du 15 au 19 octobre àOrchamps-Vennes (Doubs). Accompagnés de leurs enseignants, ils onteu la chance pendant une semaine de découvrir l’environnement du Jurafrançais et de s’initier à des activités aussi variées que la spéléologie, lerappel en falaise, le tir à l’arc, la menuiserie….. Un grand merci à MmeD’Halluin, Mme Schaër et Mr Vanaret d’avoir permis cette expérienceinoubliable.

Le 1er BBQ annuel de la Rentrée du 25/09 qui a été un énormesuccès avec plus de 1500 élèves, parents et enseignants qui sesont retrouvés pour apprécier la bonne nourriture et s’amuser,consolidant l’esprit de communauté au sein de l’école.

Le tout nouveau Salon des Métiers du 19/09 qui a égalementété un grand évènement ! Des remerciements spéciaux vont àl’équipe organisatrice CDL-APE ainsi qu’aux 38 parents du CDLqui ont bien voulu donner de leur temps pour présenter leurprofession aux élèves.

The 1st Annual CDL Back-to-School BBQ on 25/9 was a hugehit, with over 1500 students, parents and faculty coming togetheras one CDL community to enjoy good food and fun.

The new High School Career Fair 19/9 was also a great event,thanks to the CDL-PFA planning team and 38 CDL parents whopresented their professions and volunteered their time.

PFA's Newcomers Coffee 25/ 9, Swiss Traffic Seminar 10/10,and Pizza Fridays were back by popular demand and were onceagain enjoyed by many CDL parents and students.

King’s College, University College London (UCL), London School ofEconomics (LSE) and Imperial College will be at CDL Monday 3rd ofDecember 2012.They will do a presentation at 13:15-14:15 in Cervin Auditorium.These fours prestigious London universities among the top researchuniversities in the world will be on our campus to meet and answerquestions for the benefits of our students. Parents welcome.They will also hold a public meeting that evening at 19:00 at Hotel-BeauRivage Genève, 13, Quai de Mont-Blanc, 1201 Genève. Due to thepopularity of this public event, we strongly recommend you to register onKing’s website to attend:http://www.kcl.ac.uk/study/international/yourcountry/switzerland/visits.aspx Royal Holloway, University of London will be at CDL Monday 19th ofNovember 2012. They will do an informal presentation at 13:15-14:00 inCR 112. This is an opportunity for students to learn more about thisuniversity and ask their questions. Students only. Tout changement après cette date devraêtre communiqué directement à Mme. Coffey et Mme. Cherhal. Un représentant de l’Université de Cornell, l'une des universités lesplus prestigieuses des États-Unis et qui fait partie de la Ivy League, seraau CDL le lundi 12 novembre à 13h30 dans la salle CR 112. Cereprésentant organise également les entretiens pour les élèvesinternationaux et pourra donner des conseils pratiques sur le processusd’entretien et répondre aux questions.
