CDAE Welcomes Shoshanah InwoodTenure-track Assistant Prof. joins faculty

Fall 2013 will bring a new face and presence to the CDAE department. Shoshanah Inwood, PhD, will join CDAE as a new Assistant Professor in Community and International Development with a focus in Food Systems. “My career has been shaped by my interdisciplinary background; I have a PhD in Rural Sociology and a M.S. in Environmental Science, The Ohio State University and a B.A. in Biology, Oberlin College. My research program is centered on two parallel themes: 1) The persistence of agriculture at the rural-urban interface, and 2) Community based economic development through food and agriculture. Outside of academia, I worked for the Ohio Department of Agriculture as the state’s first Farm to School Coordinator and as the Director of the Office of Sustainable Agriculture. I also farmed in rural Ohio establishing a CSA and selling at farmers markets and restaurants. I enjoy hiking, camping, biking, gardening, cooking and preserving food. I’m excited to join UVM and be part of such a dynamic department like CDAE, which is at the cutting edge of developing community-based food and agriculture systems.” Ph

The MPA Program recognized graduates at a reception on Saturday, May 19. Eight students were inducted into the Pi Alpha Alpha Professional Honor Society and three awards were given. Herb Sinkinson received the 2012 Dimock Alumni Award and student Erik Wells received the 2011 Dimock Alumni Award. Herb has led a distinguished career within the Vermont Department of Corrections since 1994. A graduate of the MPA in 1999, Herb has left a trail of new programmatic efforts to develop a restorative justice network across the state of Vermont. His efforts in this area have engaged high school students, foster grandparents, the United Way, local police forces, and area nonprofits. He has served as a probation officer, casework supervisor and most importantly, a mentor to countless troubled individuals—victims and perpetrators alike. He has lead workshops and trainings for judges, lawyers and probation officers, victims-rights advocates and police officers.. Darby Brazowski received the 2012 Frank Smallwood Award (photo E) from her graduating peers. The Frank Smallwood Student Award is presented annually by the members of the graduating class to one of their class mates who is the most collegial, helpful, and supportive person in the class...a person whose commitment to colleagues and positive energy makes the complex and challenging aspects of a graduate program a cooperative and uplifting experience.

Once a year, UVM’s Davis Center hosts a hotbed of research conversation as graduate and undergraduate students display posters and give presentations based on the research they are doing on (and off) campus.

This year, twenty-two CDAE and MPA graduate candidates students presented their research to audiences from across campus. The range of research topics stemming from these students is impressive: quality of life in food deserts and classifying food hubs; media, advertisement and market analysis; and local studies on Vermont’s food, revenue streams from natural resource extraction, and terrior.

The CDAE M.S. and MPA programs have historically had a strong presence in UVM’s Student Research Conference, sending almost 75 students to the conference since 2009.

Outstanding Service-LearningCUPS 8th Annual Celebration of Service-Learning

D

On April 25th, the CUPS office announced the recipients of its Service-Learning Awards at the 8th Annual CUPS Recognition Reception. Nominations were judged on the quality of engaged scholarship demonstrated in courses between Spring 2011 and 2012 semesters.

The Outstanding Service-Learning Faculty Award was awarded to Luis Vivanco, Anthropology, for two specific courses: Anthropology of Media, where students produced public service announcements for the Safe Streets Collaborative, and Bicycles, Globalization, and Sustainability, where students conducted research with Local Motion and the bicycle advisory committee of UVM’s Parking and Transportation Services. Luis has been praised by students and community partners for his enthusiasm, passion, commitment to service-learning, and commitment to meaningful relationships between students, faculty, and community partners. Profs. Thomas Patterson, David Conner, and Adjunct Lecturer Erin Buckwalter were also nominated for this award.

The Outstanding Service-Learning Student Group Award was presented to Storm Leland, Hayley Williams, & Jordan Walsh for their impressive work in CDAE 295: Applications of Sustainable Development in Belize. The trio spent a semester engaged with Mary Open Doors, a small domestic violence prevention shelter; they worked to increase the capacity of the organization, including developing and distributing information about HIV/AIDS and domestic abuse prevention. The runners up, Hillary Laggis, and Caleb Babrant, also CDAE students, were nominated for their work with CDAE 295: Rebuilding Vermont, which concentrated on disaster relief in a post-Tropical-Storm-Irene damaged Vermont.
