Honors College Members

Benjamin Bezark was awarded the F.T. Kidder Medal as the senior man ranking fi rst in character, leadership, and scholarship across the University of Vermont campus.

Reaction from CDAE faculty:

Chris Evans, CDAE Lecturer and Assistant Director for Student Media, Dept. of Student Life- “Ben Bezark did amazing things as WRUV’s station manager. He reorganized and re-energized meetings and made a priority of communicating station direction to all of our DJs. At WRUV, about half of the DJs are non-students, many of whom have been at the station as long as Ben has been alive! But he won them over. If you can gain the respect of dozens of DJs, from age 18 to nearly 80, then clearly you’re doing something right!”

Jane Kolodinsky, CDAE Chair- “What an honor for Ben to receive THE Kidder medal! We are so pleased that Ben chose CDAE and Community and International Development. We always knew that we were attracting smart students who want to make a diff erence in the world. Now it is offi cial!”

anCDAE faculty members Meg and Jay Ashman during a fi eld trip to South Water Caye, Belize in 2008. The Ashmans have developed a very successful spring semester abroad program in Belize with a focus on sustainable development. UVM students spend the spring semester alongside Belizean students at Galen University.

Professors Jay and Meg Ashman of UVM’s Department of Community Development and Applied Economics have been honored with the 2009 “Excellence in Community-Based Teaching” award by Vermont Campus Compact. Presented at a conference on April 1, 2009, this award recognizes faculty who have made public service an integral part of their teaching, to the benefi t of both students and community. Founding faculty directors of the Belize Semester Abroad in Sustainable Development, the Ashmans were honored as a team for their long-term dedication to crafting experiences that make a meaningful impact on the local community and have a lasting impact on student learning. In addition to their work in Belize, Jay has been involved in programs in St. Lucia and Meg regularly teaches her strategic writing class as a service-learning course with partners in and around Burlington. As one student said of the Ashmans, “I have never before worked with professors as committed to their program and to their students; my time studying in Belize would not have as much meaning if it were not for the support and guidance I received from Jay and Meg.”

Sarah Sterling, ‘09 Community and International Development major, was recognized by the UVM Offi ce of Community-University Partnerships & Service-Learning during their reception on April 28, 2009. Sterling was nominated for the Outstanding Service-Learning Student Award for her eff orts as a teaching assistant for Thomas Patterson’s CDAE 124: Public Communications Media course. Sterling helped develop connections with the service-learning partners for the class, helped students with their projects, and gave excellent feedback on reports. As Dr. Patterson testifi ed, “There is no doubt that she has played a major role in the success of the class and the students.”

The St. Barnabas Anglican School in San Ignacio, Belize (and specifi cally Ms. Joyce Shaw) has worked with Jay and Meg Ashman’s Belize semester study abroad program for the past three years, participating in the course CDAE 195: Applications of Sustainable Development. Her nominator, Jay Ashman, said “Joyce has been constantly committed to expanding the knowledge and skills of the students working with her and has been a joy for them to work with. She has contributed very much to the success of this study abroad program and to the course as well. Students have reported very positive feedback and are so glad to have had the opportunity to work with Joyce and the St. Barnabas Anglican School.”
