DigiPak Analysis-

RIHANNA- ‘LOUD’

Looking at the Digi pack for Rihanna’s ‘LOUD’ album we can see the genres element conventions link to the idea of Lacey’s repertoire of elements.

The use of characters in the Digi pack shows stereotype representatives of body, behaviour and stars. The character used is the artist Rihanna. The album art work for the front cover is an extreme close up of her face. Due to the use of red lips and a thoughtful facial expression, (mouth open and eyes shut) a provocative gender representation is produced. This is highlighted as done on purpose through the use of extreme close-up.

This form of stereotype is typical of the R&B Genre that Rihanna Sings, as the genre is mainly seen sexualizing woman whether it is positively or negatively.

The Digi Pack suggests a narrative of love through the provocative and thoughtful facial expression. Her expression indicates her thinking of her lover. This is portrayed through the romantic theme and the artist’s eyes being clothes with a partially open mouth. The inside art work shows Rihanna lay down on a bed of roses. This could indicate her desire to be loved and how she feels in love. The album art work also sexualises the narrative through the performer being ay down with bare legs and messy hair. Typically this could be seen as a post sexual style.

There is a lot of use of iconography from the artist herself having a style and music genre iconic to the R&B genre or how the front cover is an extreme close up shot of the Artists profile, also iconic for the R&B genre but also for Female music artists in general. Stars like This include Niki Minaj, Rita Ora, Jessie J, and Beyoncé. The use of red roses are also iconic of love and passion. They are used to forward the romantic feel based on songs Rihanna has wrote for the album.

Technical factors such as the high key lighting show a theme of positivity as the lighting highlights Rihanna’s face and on her body on the back cover. This lighting with the use of the light pink filter it creates a sense of innocence and angelic qualities. This with the distinctive juxtaposition of Rihanna’s hands being placed over her infer an adult sense of the word angelic, to tease or attract a male audience.

With the use of Photoshop highlights the lines of her body and increases saturation to transform the image into a flawless portrait. This is to increase Rihanna’s sex appeal and create the idea of the perfect woman, perceive her as desirable and attract male fans.
