The analysis of CD covers

Justin Beiber

The genre representation:Front cover

The artist has a golden guitar that represents that he is pretty wealthy and therefore is showing that he is successful which would encourage people to buy more of his music as he is only successful because he must be good. This follows the genre of R&B music as artists like to show off their wealth and have flashy objects in the CD covers

The artist is wearing a very expensive leather jacket. This again portrays that he is very wealthy and therefore successful. This follows the R&B conventions as the artists tend to wear clothes that are expensive and flashy. However Justin’s jacket isn’t that flashy, just plain black with a little gold on his shoulder which challenges the conventions also that he’s not wearing flashy jewellery which is very common in R&B stars.

The background of the album is plain white with a water paint effect in the shadow of the artist. This follows the convention of R&B CD covers as the CD backgrounds are always a plain colour. Either black or white.

The back cover

The background to the album has the effect paint and this give the impression that the artist is artistic and creative. This follows the conventions of the acoustic genre like the album below.

The guitar case has a personalised number plate which shows again that the artist is wealthy and that also happens to be the album name.

The back cover also has credits that go towards the production team and the record label. There are also prints of the record label logo’s.

The back cover also has the barcode on the bottom left corner.

The booklet inside the CD coverThis is the booklet inside the CD cover. It shows all the songs that are on the album and the credits for each song and who produced it and where it was produced too. The writing is slanted which goes against the norm, also it looks artistic too and more interesting as more people would be intrigued by it and then want to read it.

There is a poster inside the booklet which is a bonus. The poster is of the artist and a printed signature which would allow his fans to place it in their home and would advertise it so that other people could see the poster and what to buy it too. This is a really good idea for my CD cover that I make because Conor Maynard has similar fan bases.

The audience

The majority of R&B fans are teenagers/young adults roughly between the ages of 13-25. This could be due to the artist being particularly young and fashionable as he’s wearing a leather jacket. This usually applies to females as stereotypically the R&B songs are about heartbreaks or being in love. This is something that would greatly appeal to young women and teenage girls.

The leather jacket – Fashionable

What are the features of the cover

The front cover has a yellow box that has the bonus songs on and that it has a poster inside of the artist which makes the album more viable to be bought as fans would want a poster of the artist if they're a fan.

The title of the album is bigger than the artist name. The theme of the album is the colour yellow/gold. Gold is identified as being a rich colour and therefore more people would be attracted to it.

The image is of the artist. He’s not looking at the camera and he’s looking off in to the ‘distance’. His expression also seems serious which would portray that he’s serious about his music.

The only prop that’s in the photograph is the golden guitar that symbolises that the album is an acoustic.
