Any CCV® burner can be equipped withthis anti-roping device which is locatedimmediately upstream of the burnercoal head and oriented relative to thecoal pipe design to eliminate the coalparticle “rope” which develops in anytypical coal piping system. The anti-roping device, in tandem with a ceramickicker located at the entrance to thecoal nozzle, is designed to redistributethe coal particles entering a pulverizedcoal burner (shown with the patentedCCV® coal nozzle in Figure 1). Thiscreates a more uniform coal distributionresulting in improved and controllablecombustion. The device eliminates theneed for the primary head vanes usedpreviously in CCV® burners, therebyeliminating any potential maintenanceassociated with these items.

OVERVIEW Since the introduction of the first CCV®

burner in the early 1990’s, Riley PowerInc., a Babcock Power Inc. company, hasbeen continuously improving this burnerdesign and its various components toenhance its overall performance andreliability. The original design wasfollowed by the CCV® dual air zoneburner that offered separate air flowcontrol and improved levels of NOx.Various changes were also made, overtime, to improve the mechanicalreliability. New materials were alsoincorporated to improve the overallreliability of these burners depending oncoal abrasiveness.

A recent performance enhancementdeveloped by Riley Power is an Anti-roping Device. The anti-roping devicewas designed to enable operators toachieve more uniform coal distributionat the burner exit, which is an important
