Levels of Field Testing
Verification
The installed link meets basic continuity
requirements
Does not imply any bandwidth or transmissionquality measure
Qualification
The installed cabling link successfully transmits datausing a specific network technology
(i.e. 100BASE-TX)
Does not imply compliance with other technologies
than the one used in the test

Levels of Field Testing (Cont¶d)
Certification
The installed cabling link meets the transmission
performance criteria as defined by the applicable
industry standard; the test results are documentedand reported in compliance with the standard
The definition of performance and the level
(³category´) of performance is defined by industry
standards TIA-568-B defines Cat 5e, Cat 6
ISO 11801 and ISO/IEC 61935 define Class C, D , E and F

³Certification´
Compare the performance of an installed cabling
system to a standard
The cabling system includes: cables ³in the wall´, outletconnectors, interconnects, patch panels and patch cords
Performance depends on component quality and
installation workmanship
cer·ti·fy v. cer·ti·fied, cer·ti·fy·ing, cer·ti·fies. ± tr
1. a. To confirm formally as true, accurate, or genuine.
b. To guarantee as meeting a standard.

Installation Certification ± Why?
Components (Spools of cable, Patch panels, Outlets,
connectors, patch cords, etc.) are delivered to the
³construction site´
The cable is pulled and terminated (connectorized)on-site
The ³final product´ delivered to the customer is the
installed cabling system ± not the components
(spools, racks, panels, outlets, etc.)
This final product should be tested to verify that it
meets the desired performance specifications
Manufacturers¶ warranty is based on passing
certification results

Principle of ISO, EN, & TIA
Performance MeasurementsBased on a Signal-to-Noise Ratio
Insertion Loss (Attenuation)
Measure of signal strength at the end of thetransmission medium
Noise/Disturbance
All unwanted/undesirable signal noise inserted
between transmitter and receiver Characterized by test parameters that measure
crosstalk (NEXT, FEXT) and return loss

Category 5e
Originally released as Addendum #5 to the 568-A
Standard in February 2000. Currently listed in 568-B.
Specified for new installations to fully support
1000Base-T with additional margin.
NEXT has a more stringent test limit than the original
TSB-67 (Cat 5) test specs.
Adds Return Loss, ELFEXT (Equal Level Far End
Crosstalk), power sum calculations of PSNEXT and
PSELFEXT to qualify multi-pair transmission.

Category 6 was approved on June 4th, 2002.
Released as addendum #1 to 568-B.2
Pre-Standardization: In order to meet performance
requirements, vendors developed proprietary
connectors (jacks) and matching plugs.
Early designs violated TIA interoperability requirements
for connecting hardware !
Post-Standardization (2002): Full interoperability
among various manufacturers with standardized
plugs and jacks.

Alien Crosstalk
Crosstalk between wire-pairsin adjacent cables
General rules:
This crosstalk is worst betweenwire-pairs with the same twist rate
The effect is greater if cablesstay in parallel at the link ends
Impact increases with the
distance over which the cablesrun in parallel
Impact increases with thefrequency of the transmittedsignals

Why the ³Permanent Link´?
The true ³foundation´ ± cabling that is permanent

Network equipment, patch cables and equipment
cables are changed many times during the life of the

Permanent Link Accuracy
With excellent baseline accuracy, the focus is on
the performance of the Permanent Link Adapter
The performance of the adapters can only make
things worse whether the baseline accuracy is good
or questionable With high-quality adapters the measurement accuracy
of the PL measurement is only degraded a very small
amount from the baseline accuracy
The principle rules:
The adapters should not contribute to the measurement results of any
test parameter (degradation to be minimized)
Mated NEXT of the test plug and jack at the end of the link-under-test
have a significant influence (this µvariability¶ is not included in the
standard accuracy model)

Fundamental Characteristics of
NEXT and Return Loss
NEXT and Return Loss (RL) disturbance is more
significant when the source of the disturbance
(defect or problem) is closer to the
transmitter/receiver end (end of the link)
We will review the fundamentals of each of these
disturbances (test parameters) for Permanent Link

Return Loss ± A Major Test Challenge
Return Loss in the tester¶s adapter cords ± closest to the
transmitter/receiver ± potentially adds a significant
measurement error that must be avoided
RL disturbance is more significant when the
disturbance is closer to a transmitter/receiver

Return Loss ± Adapter Requirements
What is required to accurately measure RL?
The permanent link interface cable itself must
have very good return loss characteristics
Impedance (differential): very close to 100 ;
Very good Return Loss performance
Stability: Very stable impedance characteristic over time
(after coiling and uncoiling the cable while packing, etc.)
Move the calibration reference plane
to the ³end of the permanent link.´

Troubleshooting with the DTX
Performance requirements in the standards (such
as CAT 6 and 6A) for NEXT and RL are much more
stringent than previous categories of cabling.
There is a probability that installed links will be
MARGINAL or FAIL even though all components
meet component level specifications and
installation workmanship is of acceptable quality
Troubleshooting failed links efficiently and
effectively is critical to ensure minimal loss of
project time and associated additional project cost

NEXT and NEXT Defects
Near End Cross Talk (NEXT) Crosstalk between two twisted pairs measured at the same
end of the cable as the disturbing signal source
Causes of NEXT include:
Untwisting of wire-pairs at connection points Poorly matched plug/jack combinations
Poor quality patch cables
Bad connectors
Bad cable
Split pairs
Excessive compression caused by plastic cable ties
Excessive noise source adjacent to measured cabling link

Advantages of NEXT Diagnostics
Identify and locate the problem
Dramatically reduce the amount of time to locatethe NEXT failures (connector, cable, TP/CP)
Knowing what and where to inspect in the link
reduces the time and cost of fixing the problem
Disadvantage of ³random troubleshooting´:
Increase project time in re-terminating connectors that arenot the cause of the fault
Increase project time and material cost in pulling cable, replacing, re-terminating and re-testing cable that wasnot the fault
