For Christmas

Coweta County: Installation of Tornado Sirens continues The first of 16 Tornado Warning Sirens has been erected at Whitlock Park just off Hwy. 34 East. If all goes as planned, the installation of the 16 sirens should be completed by Thanksgiving, according to Coweta County Emergency Management Direc-tor Jay Jones.

“The sirens are designed to issue tor-nado warnings to people outdoors and in the case of an emergency, they will sound both a siren and a recorded voice message urging people to seek shelter,” Jones said. The new sirens will connect with the existing eight sirens in the City of Newn-

an, giving the area a total of 24 sirens. Jones also urges homeowners to invest in a weather radio or weather radio app for their smartphones for all emergency weather updates. It is important to note that not all sirens will sound each time, only those in the endangered areas. Coweta County Photo

Thanksgiving is all about families getting together to share our love and memories, as well as acknowledging God as our source of provision. And many of us are ac-

customed to making long car trips to Grammas this time of year. There is no reason a trip like this shouldn’t be pleasant considering how luxurious, safe and reliable most cars are today. Each person will listen to theater quality music while luxuriating in heated and cooled seats. A little bored? Just flip down the video screen and enjoy your favorite music while “in flight”. Upon arrival we’ll just pull up in the drive, relaxed and “looking like a million dollars”.

As a child I can remember a few of those trips, too. I suppose we enjoyed it back then, but it was more like an adventure than a sim-

ple car trip. We had relatives in South Georgia, no more than two hundred miles away, but because of our old car and the narrow, bumpy roads, that trip would take about five hours. For the times, our car had a few safety features, too – brakes (when they worked), a horn, and tires which would last at least half the trip without a blow out. And yes, we had a nav system. It was a ball-shaped object on top of the dash – a compass, which would tell us, most of the time, whether we were traveling North or South. Additional detailed results could be ob-tained by using a paper map of the state - that is until it blew out of the open window and was run over by the 4 cars waiting to pass us! As for music, we sang “Found a Peanut”, or some other “hit” song of the day. And our entertainment was provided by a game we called “the animal game”. We divided into two teams, right side and left side of the hi-way. We counted the four-legged animals on our side and kept score until the end of the trip. Passing a cemetery on your side of the road would wipe out all of your points. (Once my father, having just passed a cemetery on his side of the car, quickly turned around and drove by it on our side. The whole game had to start over with much protest!)

Getting our bathroom breaks coordinated seemed to be the biggest challenge. With five or six in the car, we were stopping a lot. Back then there were no fast food places. One would just stop at a little country gas station and ask for the restroom key, which was usually attached to a 2X4 plank. Some of those bathrooms had not been cleaned in years, if ever, but, back in the car, we enjoyed talking about how bad that one was compared to the last we stopped at. We even rated then on a scale of 1 to 10, most only getting as high as a “two”! In the hot seasons, all the windows would have to be down to prevent our perishing as cars of that era had no AC. Wind, road grit, exhaust fumes from passing cars, and a little grease from changing a tire would leave us hot, dirty and sweaty at the end of the trip, not to mention just plain tired. But when we arrived in town, we would find a “clean” gas station where we could change shirts, wash our face and comb our hair. And a few minutes later, we rolled up to grandmother’s house “looking like a million dollars”!

So, next time your family is taking a long, safe, comfortable and entertaining road trip, and some-one in the back says “are we there yet?”, just use this generation’s politically correct phrase, “please remain quiet.” Cars and people used to be much less sophisticated. They just told us to “shut up and keep counting those animals”!

JoePost Script: I can remember one particular trip when the baby’s milk bottle fell through a rusted out hole in the rear floor and onto the hi-way, never to be seen again. The incident was determined my fault, as I was sitting on that side. My mother was mad and the baby was mad. But the tension didn’t last long after my mother decided, “It’s just a good thing the hole in the floor was smaller than the baby”!

“It’s just a good thing the hole in the floor was smaller than the baby!”

Get Your Holiday Cash Now

One HOur LOan apprOvaLSecurity Finance770-251-5010It’s here again! Time to make the season merry! One of its greatest pleasures is in the prepa-

ration. Home is where our hearts and memories return at the Holiday Season. Now is the time to decorate with lights, color, sparkle, and sound. Green represents eternal life; red says joy and love and warmth; blue denotes spiritual calm; white symbolizes purity and winter’s snow. Gold and silver add sparkle and radiance. Light has long been associated with celebrations and festivals. Bells and special music add to the festive mood.

We don’t have to go over the budget to create a festive scene. Christmas tree trimmings can provide free greenery. Search your yard for inconspicuous limbs and foliages that could be cut. Bare branches found could be sprayed white or fl ocked with ‘snow’. Nandina berries are great for color. Leaves (such as magnolia) can be sprayed silver, gold, bronze, copper or even sprinkled with glitter after spray adhesive. Cranberries or kumquats can fi ll a clear glass container with or without water. Nuts or cones are best used dry in con-tainers. The nuts and cones are lovely gilded in silver or gold. Artifi cial fruits found at yard sales or thrift stores can be sprayed with ‘snow’. Real fruits (such as grapes) can be brushed with beaten egg whites and sprinkled with sugar. Make your own sugarplums. Cut your own ribbons from fabric with pinking shears. Plaid seems to be popular this year.

Plant materials need to be hardened (conditioned) before using them. Soak greenery and leaves in a laundry tub or bathtub a few hours to overnight. Nandina berries hold up well! Greenery that holds up well for longer periods of time are: boxwood, camellia, holly, peris, eleagnus, ivy, yew, pine, juniper, cedar, magnolia, aspidistra, osmanthus, acuba, palm, pittosporum, ma-honia, rosemary. Hydrangeas should have stem ends dipped in boiling water for 30 seconds and then placed in deep water to their necks. Poinsettias must have their cut stem ends seared in a fl ame (candle, match, lighter) each time the ends are cut. They can also be cleaned of all dirt and placed in baggies.

Plastic fast food containers, food jars, coat hang-ers, dry cleaning bags, and chicken wire are easy to fi nd and free or inexpensive. Florist wires, wooden picks, waterproof fl oral tape, hot glue guns and sta-plers are useful in arranging. Fabric dye is excellent for tinting dried materials or corn husks.

Plan your Holiday Theme from the front door, to the entry, to the dining table carried through-out the house. It might be White Christmas, San-ta, angels, bells, sleighs, etc. Use restraint in the number of arrangements and decorations for each room. Strive for simplicity and unity. Even some foods could repeat the colors and themes chosen. No money for expensive spices - simmer apple juice on the stove. A bowl of fresh apples or oranges with bits of greenery tucked around is quick, easy, and can be eaten later. Keep candles away from plant

materials and other fl ammable items. Never leave them unattended.

Imagination combined with yard and garden gifts will create lasting memories.

Happy Holidays!

Fishing In The FallIt was a chilly November evening. My grandfather and I got his tackle box and the purple and red fishing rods and headed down toward the lake. We put the worms on the hooks, then cast out our fishing rods. No bites. We reeled in our fishing rods, and kept the same process going. Time after time we cast our fishing rods out. No bites. It was getting colder by the minute. We finally gave up. Neither one of us caught anything that night, but, it was okay, because last time we fished out there on the lake, I caught three to nothing! That doesn’t matter though, because the most important part is having fun and getting to make a special memory with my special grandfather!

Don’t Let Mishaps Ruin anksgiving

DinnerAft er almost 35 years of

cooking, I’ve had my share of Th anksgiving Day disasters! Here are some secrets to saving

your sanity and your Th anksgiving dinner:How To Defr ost A Turkey

You’ll need at least 24 to 48 hours (about fi ve hours per pound) to thaw a frozen turkey in the refrigerator. If you need to do a quick thaw, place the wrapped, frozen turkey in your kitchen sink or a large contain-er like an ice chest. Cover the turkey with cold water. Drain and refi ll the water every half-hour because as the bird thaws out, the water will get warmer. Using this method, the turkey will thaw at the rate of about a half-hour for each pound.Preparing Th e Bird For Cooking

Remove the giblet package (neck, livers, heart and gizzards) from inside the cavity of the bird AND check the neck cavity. Some manufacturers place the giblet package in the neck cavity and others place it inside the cavity closest to the legs.

Most turkeys come with the legs already trussed (crossed and secured with a metal or plastic bracket). If you’re not going to stuff your bird, there’s no need to truss the legs. Trussing an un-stuff ed bird hinders the hot oven air from circulating inside and around the legs. Th is means that the dark meat will take longer

to cook and the breast meat will cook faster and probably dry out before the legs ever get completely done.Th e Turkey Isn’t Done

Don’t rely on the “pop-up” timer in the turkey, as it usually means that the breast is overcooked and the dark meat isn’t done. If the dark meat isn’t done, remove the wings and breast meat from the rest of the turkey, in one piece, if possible. Cover the breast and wing portion with foil and set it aside. Put the drum-sticks and thigh portion of the turkey back into the oven to con-tinue cooking until done. You can re-assemble the whole turkey and garnish it, or just cut it into serving portions and arrange it on a platt erStuffi ng Savers

If the stuffi ng/dressing is too wet, spread it out in a thin layer on a sheet pan so that it will dry quickly. Place it back into the oven for 5 to 7 minutes.

If it’s too dry, add more pan drippings or chicken broth to the mixture. If you don’t have anymore drippings or broth, you can combine a chicken bouillon cube (if you have one), along with a teaspoon of poultry seasoning, three tablespoons of butt er and 1 cup of water. Cook the mixture in the microwave for 3 to 5 min-utes or until it comes to a boil. Stir to combine and then add it, a litt le at a time, to the dressing until it’s moist.Soupy Mashed Potatoes

You can add unseasoned dry breadcrumbs to soupy mashed potatoes to absorb any excess liquid.Gravy Rescue Tips

If the gravy is lumpy, pour it through a strainer into a new pan and bring it to a simmer, stirring gently. If it’s too thin, mix a table-spoon of melted butt er with a tablespoon of fl our. Bring the gravy up to a boil and whisk in the butt er mixture to thicken your gravy. If the gravy is too thick, add a litt le more chicken broth, pan drip-pings or a litt le water and butt er to thin it out.

Burnt Off eringsIf the turkey begins to burn

while it’s roasting, fl ip the bird over immediately and continue to cook it. Aft er the turkey is done, you can remove and dis-card any blackened skin and about half an inch of the meat below any burnt area. Slice the remaining breast meat, arrange it on a platt er and ladle gravy over it.

If your vegetables or gravy burn on the bott om, carefully re-move the layer that isn’t burned into another pot or serving dish. Don’t Scrape Th e Bott om Of Th e Pan

If the dinner rolls are burned on the bott om, just cut off as much as you can, butt er them, and fold them in half to cover the missing ends.

Whipped cream is the perfect “make-up” for desserts that aren’t quite up to par. You can cut the top layer off a burnt pie and cover it with whipped cream.

Hopefully, these tips will rescue you from any Th anksgiving Day disasters, but remember, it’s about gathering together to give thanks with the people you love -- not the perfect meal! Have a blessed Th anksgiving!

City of Newnan’s Christmas ParadeGrand Marshals Announced

The City of Newnan’s annual Christmas parade will be held Sunday, December

8th, beginning at 3:00 p.m. The parade begins at Salbide Avenue and Greenville Streets. It’s a “Winter Wonderland” so bring on your snow! The parade will include floats, walking groups, decorated cars and trucks, and marching bands.

This year, the City is proud to announce Newnan’s Hometown Heroes Newnan Police and Fire personnel; honoring those that serve the community every day.

Newnan Officer Chad Woods has been with the police department for 15 years. Newnan Officer Brent McComas has been with the police department for 11 years. They were both selected because they were able to complete their col-lege degrees, while working full time hours and maintaining their family life and community activities.

Newnan Fire Driver Engineer Johnny Minix has been employed with the City of Newnan Fire Department for 36 years. As a driver engineer he has have sev-eral responsibilities the most important being, transporting himself and others to and from emergency and non-emergency situations in a safe manner.

“In the past 35 years, I’ve been a part of the growth of this City and met many new people and experienced life changing endeavors. I have not only grown from things and the many experiences, but I have been able to touch the lives of others while being touched myself through tragedies of a lost love one going home to a new beginning. One of the most touching moments in my career was in 1981 when I rescued an 8 month old child from an apartment fire where I received the GA Firefighters Association award for valor and the National Heroism award from Firehouse Magazine. Being a Driver Engineer (Sargent) has been life-changing and worth it all. I’ve not only made many friends, but instead, I’ve built a brother and sisterhood that will last a life-time.”

Sergeant Vic Kline has been in the fire service since Feb. 2000. He has been employed with the City of Newnan Fire Dept. from Feb. 2000-present. SGT. Kline has also been certified as a police officer in 2001. But, he has made the fire service his primary career. Sergeant Kline has been proactive in furthering his career in at-tending many extra training classes, to better his knowledge pertaining to his job as a fire fighter. At the present time he is in EMT school, which will allow him to give better patient care, while waiting on the medics to arrive on the scene. Piedmont Newnan Hospital To Offer Discounted

Lung Cancer ScreeningsLung cancer causes more deaths than colon, breast

and prostate cancer combined, according to the National Com-prehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). That’s why Piedmont Newnan Hospital is offering lung cancer screenings at a discounted rate of $99.

Patients who meet a certain criteria and are deemed “high risk” for lung cancer will be able to participate in the lung cancer screen-ing program which uses a low-dose CT (computed tomography) screening to detect the disease. Those who are at high risk include people older than 55 years of age who have smoked approximately one pack of cigarettes a day for more than 30 years; those who have smoked two packs a day for 15 years; and those who have smoked three packs a day for 10 years or more.

“The test only takes 30 minutes to complete and the new low-dose CT uses far less radiation,” said Dr. Folk. “This program gives us the opportunity to catch lung cancer at an earlier stage so we have better chances of curing our patients and giving them a fighting chance at life.”

As with many diseases, early detection of lung cancer is key to successful treatment. Screenings such as the low-dose CT can detect cancer before signs appear. Common symptoms of lung cancer include coughing that lasts, blood in lungs, exces-sive mucus, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest area pain, tired-ness, pneumonia, hoarse voice, pain when swallowing, and high-pitched sound when breathing.

To learn more about the lung screening program at Piedmont Newnan Hospital, visit piedmont.org/lung.

With gas prices reaching record levels in the recent past, it’s more important than ever to keep a close look on your gas spending. Listed below are 10 things that can assist you in keeping your fuel costs in check. 1. Avoid High Speeds As your speed increases, your aerodynamic drag increases in an exponential fashion. Driving 62 mph vs 75 mph will reduce fuel consump-tion by about 15%. 2. Do Not Accelerate or Brake Hard By anticipating the traf-fic and applying slow steady acceleration and braking, fuel economy may increase by as much as 20%. 3. Keep Tires Properly Inflated Keep tire air pressure at the level recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. A single tire under inflated by 2 PSI, increases fuel consumption by 1%. 4. Use A/C Sparingly When the air conditioner is on it puts extra load on the engine forcing more fuel to be used (by about 20%). The de-frost position on most vehicles also uses the air conditioner. 5. Keep Windows Closed Windows open, especially at highway speeds, increase drag and result in decreased fuel economy of up to 10%. 6. Service Vehicle on Regular Schedule Proper maintenance avoids poor fuel economy related to dirty air filters, old spark plugs or low fluid levels. 7. Use Cruise Control Maintaining a constant speed over long distances often saves gas. 8. Avoid Heavy Loads Remove the sand bags from your trunk in the spring and pack lightly for long trips. 9. Avoid Long Idles If you anticipate being stopped for more than 1 min-ute, shut off the car. Restart-ing the car uses less fuel than letting it idle for this time. 10. Purchase a FuelEfficient Vehicle When buying a new vehicle examine the vehicle’s rated fuel efficiency. Usually choosing a small vehicle with a manual transmission will provide you with great fuel economy.

DID YOU KNOW...

Some 120 years ago, the Univer-sity of Mississippi launched its storied football program in 1893. The University, affectionately known as “Ole Miss”, had Dr. A.L. Bondurant urging students to help in the formation of an Athletics Association in the interests of football, baseball and tennis. That group became a reality and a football team was organized with Bondurant as the manager-coach. It was Nov. 11, 1893, that Ole Miss played its first collegiate football game. The opponent for that historic contest

was Southwest Baptist University of Jackson, Tenn. Where does the connection to Ole Miss and Coweta County exist in this storyline? The connection is with a senior law student from Newnan, Ga., named Mordecai Jones. According to records, Jones was a halfback in the Ole Miss lineup. More importantly, Jones scored the very first touchdown in University of Mississippi football history. And for icing on the cake, Ole Miss went on to win its first game by the score of 56-0.

Pictured above is action from a University of Mississippi football game in the 1930s. (Ole Miss SID Photo).

e Fall football campaign for our local teams was a bit dismal. Coach Tommy Walbern at Northgate was not able to get his Vikings into

the post season a er having the worst season since he took over the reins of the Vikings. He is in a rebuilding year and expects to be back and in good shape next year.

Coach Clint Wade, head coach of the East Coweta Indians struggled through the 2nd worst season the Indians have had in a long time. He did however manage to get into the post-season but had to face a buzz saw as the Lions of Lowndes came to Shoemake and administered a complete thrash-ing of the Indians. e EC team wound up the season with a 5 wins vs 6 loss season.

And our friends and kin-folks over in the land of the Cougars are licking their wounds a er having to face the powerhouse of Colquit county. End-ing the campaign with a 6 wins vs 5 losses.

I imagine every coach in our county is at the drawing board as you read this, trying to gure out what happened and what to do to x it.

Having said all this, this column and publication would like to thank each of the men and women involved in Coweta football for their dedication and hard work and wish them much be er luck in the next season. Stay tuned to this column, because basketball is just around the corner.

Until then, God Bless.

Fire pits are a great way to relax and unwind in your backyard this time of the year around Coweta County. And most importantly, the type of wood chosen for the fire is key to that great fire-pit experience. Listed below are the types of wood to use when utilizing a fire pit and its characteristics. ASH WOOD – Ash burns very hot. FIR – Favorable smell-ing and easy to burn, fir is a smoky and sparky wood. OAK – Although harder to get burning, oak burns hot and pro-duces little smoke. MAPLE – the hard-to-light maple produces little smoke and odor. PINE – Plentiful in nature, pine burns easy and has an enjoyable smell. SPRUCE – Smoky and sparky, spruce is not a high-heat producer.

Now, we’re going to learn how to check the coolant level in your car’s engine.

Always check coolant when the engine is o and cool. Open the hood of your car and locate the radiator cap. It will be in an obvious location either on the top of the radiator or on an over ow tank. Because of the pressure in the system under the cap, you will need to push it down and turn it counterclockwise to remove it, just like the cap on a medicine bo le. It is best to cover the cap with a rag to keep your hands clean and to provide some cushion when depressing and turning. e coolant won’t hurt you but is usually pre y slimy. Inside the neck you removed the cap from you should see the coolant. It will prob-ably be brown from all the rust and gunk in the average cooling system. Fresh water is, obviously clear, and antifreeze is usually bright green, but they turn brown real quick-ly. If you don’t see any water in the radiator neck, you need to add some until you do. Some newer cars may have an opaque plas-tic bo le with markings on it indicating the proper uid level. Again, the best advice is to look up the topic in your Owner’s Manual and see what your speci c car looks like on paper before you go rummaging around in the dirty engine compartment. If you have to add only a small amount of water, it is al-right to use pure and not worry about the concentration of anti-freeze. Purists will use distilled water so that other chemicals and minerals are not introduced into the system. But it is alright to use tap water if that’s all you have. Most people use a mixture of 50% water and 50% antifreeze which means the coolant will stay liquid down to something like -30 degrees. If you continually need to add water, you probably have a leak in one of the many hoses, clamps, or other joints in the system and need to have it checked out by your mechanic. Just like you don’t want to run low or run out of engine oil, you also don’t want to get too low on engine coolant. at idiot light in your instrument panel, again, does not tell you that the system is low on coolant, only that it is ho er than it should be and needs pre y immediate a en-tion. Like, safely pull o the road real soon and take care of it. Otherwise, the engine oil gets too hot, the engine coolant gets too hot, the metal engine parts get too hot and….

NuLink Donates $10,750 To The Coweta County SchoolsTo Support More Technology Access For Students

NuLink donated $10,750 to the Coweta County School System at the November 12th, 2013 Board of Education meeting. For the third year in a row, NuLink will do-nate more than $10,000 through its “Support Our Schools” campaign. This year’s campaign focused on putting more technology in the hands of students and teach-ers, from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

According to Dean Jackson, Public Information Officer of the CCSS, “Having NuLink support the Coweta County School System for the third year in a row is incredible. The involvement and interest that NuLink and their customers have shown to better technology across our school system has been wonderful. Thanks to this donation, more technology will be in the hands of more students and teach-ers. We are grateful for this generous donation and look forward to distributing the funds throughout all schools in Coweta County.”

NuLink also presented the check at the Newnan High School versus East Coweta High School football game last Friday night.

“The support from the community and the school system for this campaign has been great. Year after year, we are proud to represent our customers to the school board and give this donation. Education in Coweta County is top notch, and the school board does a fantastic job providing for the needs of the schools and the community; we know this donation will go towards important needs in the educa-tional system and will allow teachers and students alike opportunities to grow in their learning possibilities,” said Dan Shoemaker, CEO of NuLink.

What is likely the most important of all car-care tips? Changing the oil. Simply put, no single step will help an engine last more than

regular oil and filter changes will. However, nothing will destroy an engine faster than neglecting oil-level checks and fresh oil changes. – Kelley Blue Book / kbb.com
