School BuzzBeginning in the fall of 2014, the Katy Independent School District will open the doors to a brand-new elementary school for families in the west Houston master-planned community of Cross Creek Ranch. Residents currently attend Shafter Elementary of the Katy ISD and Huggins Elementary of the Lamar Consolidated ISD.
Located at FM 1463 and Flewellen Oaks Lane, the new school will serve families in one of the nation’s top-selling master-planned communities.
KISD held the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, 5/23 at 10 a.m. We had an amazing turnout and Cross Creek served a great meal afterwards.

NATURE EXPO IN CROSS CREEK RANCHCross Creek Ranch families filled the community room this past April to learn about the wildlife in Cross Creek Ranch and surrounding areas. Residents were treated to educational and interactive exhibits about water education, native plants, and native wildlife featuring live owls, butterflies, alligators and non-venomous snakes handled by professionals.
Nature SightingsWhat type of wildlife have you seen in CCR? Share your story at [email protected].
GREAT BLUE HERONWhether poised at a river bend or cruising the coastline with slow, deep wingbeats, the Great Blue Heron is a majestic sight. This stately heron with its subtle blue-gray plumage often stands motionless as it scans for prey or wades belly deep with long, deliberate steps. They may move slowly, but Great Blue Herons can strike like lightning to grab a fish or snap up a gopher. In flight, look for this widespread heron’s tucked-in neck and long legs trailing out behind.
Great Blue Herons eat nearly anything within striking distance, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, insects, and other birds. They grab smaller prey in their strong mandibles or use their dagger-like bills to impale larger fish, often shaking them to break or relax the sharp spines before gulping them down.
