Every generation has a musical that taps into the spirit of its age. In 1944, Leonard Bernstein’s On the Town brought fresh faces and a jazz-inflected score to Broadway. My generation grooved to the sound of Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical. In the 90s, there was Rent by Jonathan Larson. For the current generation, it is American Idiot, a through-sung adaptation of Green Day’s rock opera.

The story of American Idiot is simple, a contemporary fable in the style of the Brothers Grimm. Three disaffected young men—Johnny, Will and Tunny—plan to flee a stifling suburban lifestyle and parental restrictions. Two head to the city in search of the meaning of life, while the third stays home to work out his relationship with his pregnant girlfriend. Tunny quickly gives up on life in the city, joins the military and is shipped off to war. Johnny, the “Jesus of Suburbia,” turns to drugs, finds a part of himself he grows to dislike, has a relationship with a nameless woman and experiences lost love. The men return to Jingletown older and wiser, having experienced the disillusionment and dissent experienced by the generation who came of age in an America roiled by dark events, including the Iraq War.

The album of American Idiot marked a career comeback for Green Day. It sold 15 million copies worldwide and spawned five successful singles: “American Idiot,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Holiday, “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and “Jesus of Suburbia.” It won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2005 and continues to be listed as one of the greatest rock albums in recent history.

American Idiot is a musical by the young for the young. Working with me on the CCM production are two formidable members of our Class of 2016, Samantha Pollino (choreographer) and Tom Meglio (Assistant Director). I asked them to jot down some thoughts about the show. The information on the next page is what they wrote.

On behalf of the cast, crew and creative team, welcome to CCM’s American Idiot. If you somehow find yourself sitting in the Patricia Corbett Theater wondering, “Why on earth would CCM produce a Green Day concept-album-musical?”—well, you have turned to the right page of your playbill.

The mission of CCM’s Musical Theatre program is to provide a well-rounded education for its performers and creative artists. Students must be challenged by a wide variety of performance styles and genres, from the Golden Age of musical theatre to the rock-dominated mode of the contemporary Broadway show. (Hamilton, the runaway hit of the current season, is written entirely in Rap!)

We have chosen to set this production three years prior to Green Day’s initial album release (2004), to create an atmosphere of immediacy, to highlight the themes of the show as a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and to explore the period of upheaval that immediately followed.

In researching this time in American history, we discovered that we are the perfect candidates to tell this story reflecting, as it does, the cultural awakening that shaped our generation. We are the product of the events that transpired at the turn of the century. The survivors. Generation Y. The Millennials. American Idiot was one of our generation’s very first artistic expressions of events that are ever present in our consciousness because, for the very first time, our generation can say: we lived them.

The cast asks only that in addition to “rocking-out,” you take a moment to connect with, reflect on and embrace this piece as a raw fragment of history. We present it for you with utmost respect, curiosity and many unanswered questions. We extend to you our heartfelt thanks for joining us at this performance of American Idiot.

BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONGBILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG, frontman of the rock band Green Day, came of age in the underground punk scene in Berkeley. Green Day’s albums include 1039/Smooth Out Slappy Hours; Kerplunk; 1994’s Dookie, which sold 15 million copies and garnered their first Grammy (and inspired a raft of imitators); Insomniac; Nimrod; Warning; 2004’s landmark American Idiot, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, and earned seven Grammy® nominations (winning two, including Best Rock Album); 21st Century Breakdown (Grammy® Award, Best Rock Album); and 2012’s consecutively released ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! (as well as the behind the scenes DVD, ¡Cuatro!). Last year, Armstrong and Norah Jones released Foreverly, a tribute to the Everly Brothers’ 1958 Songs Our Daddy Taught Us. The Tony and Grammy winning musical American Idiot, featuring lyrics by Armstrong, music by Green Day, and a book written by Armstrong and director Michael Mayer, opened on Broadway in 2010. Throughout its run, he made cameo appearances in the role of St. Jimmy. The recent documentary, Broadway Idiot, chronicles his road to the Great White Way. Armstrong also composed the music for These Paper Bullets currently being staged at the Yale Repertory Theatre. His other film and TV credits include This is 40, Nurse Jackie, and the upcoming feature film, Like Sunday, Like Rain. www.greenday.com

MICHAEL MAYERMr. Mayer made his Metropolitan Opera debut with a celebrated new production of Rigoletto. Broadway: On A Clear Day You Can See Forever; American Idiot (Drama Desk Award, Best Director); Everyday Rapture; Spring Awakening (Tony Award, Best Director/Best Musical); Thoroughly Modern Millie (Tony Award, Best Musical); Side Man (Tony Award, Best Play); A View From the Bridge (Tony Award, Best Revival); Uncle Vanya; night, Mother; After the Fall; You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown; Triumph of Love. Off-Broadway: Spring Awakening, Everyday Rapture, The Illusion, Our House, 10 Million Miles, Antigone in New York, Baby Anger, The Credeaux Canvas, Stupid Kids. Film: A Home at the End of the World, Flicka. Television: Do No Harm; director and consulting producer for the first season of Smash.

GREEN DAYGREEN DAY—vocalist/guitarist BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG bassist MIKE DIRNT, and drummer TRÉ COOL—were kids from working-class backgrounds who came of age in the underground punk scene in Berkeley. Even though they had released two records prior (1039 / Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk), they announced their arrival with 1994’s Dookie, a dynamic blast of exuberant punk-pop that sold 15 million copies and earned the band its first Grammy® Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Over the years, Green Day continued to top the charts with their subsequent studio albums Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning, while entertaining millions of fans with their frenetic live shows. But it was their landmark 2004 album American Idiot

that launched Green Day into the stratosphere. American Idiot debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, earned seven Grammy® nominations (winning two, including Best Rock Album), and raised the bar for modern rock and roll. In 2009, Green Day released 21st Century Breakdown, which won the 2010 Grammy® Award for Best Rock Album. It spawned two hit singles: the gold “Know Your Enemy,” which was the first song ever to top Billboard’s Rock, Alternative, and Mainstream Rock charts simultaneously, and the double-platinum “21 Guns,” which earned them three 2009 MTV Video Music Awards including Best Rock Video. Green Day also took home an American Music Award for Favorite Alternative Rock Music Artist. Later that year, Green Day collaborated with Tony Award winning director of Spring Awakening, Michael Mayer, for the stage musical of American Idiot. The play bowed at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in September 2009 and set attendance records during its limited engagement. The play went on to Broadway and ran for a year at the St. James Theatre and won two Tony Awards. Green Day’s highly anticipated album trilogy kicked off with the release of Green Day ¡Uno!, (September 25, 2012) followed by Green Day ¡Dos! (November 13th), and Green Day ¡Tré! (December 11th). The band recently completed the Soundwave Festival in Australia. For more info visit www.greenday.com.

JOHN HARRISON John Harrison is the founder of The CCM Harmony Fund: Challenging Hate and Prejudice through Performing Arts. The arts are truly a language that all people speak; they cut across racial, cultural, social, educational and economic barriers. The CCM Harmony Fund was established to celebrate the language of the arts, encourage conversation and advocate compassion. The fund supports our incredibly talented students and faculty at the College-Conservatory of Music in the media and performing arts in creative and unique ways to promote culturally diverse audiences, and fight hate and prejudice. Mr. Harrison has made provisions in his will to support and continue the mission of The Harmony Fund.

The Harmony Fund was created as both an acknowledgement of the continuing existence of hate and prejudice within this civilized world and, more importantly, the ability of the arts to help us better understand and transcend these emotions.

Dear Friends and Alumni,

As you know, UC’s College-Conservatory of Music has an international reputation for excellence and competes with our country’s finest conservatories for extraordinary students. Yes, the performances are outstanding. Yes, it is the largest single source of performances in the state of Ohio. And yes, CCM is an Ohio Center of Excellence. But are

you aware that CCM alumni and students are the arts engine for our own community?

Not only are CCM alumni and students working behind the scenes and appearing on stages around the world but you also witness their work and performances at our very own Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Ballet, Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati, Know Theatre of Cincinnati, Cincinnati’s School for Creative and Performing Arts… the list goes on and on.

CCMpower raises funds for scholarships to help attract the best and brightest students to CCM. I am proud of our college, students, alumni and the impact CCM has on our arts community. And today, I encourage you to also become a member of CCMpower!

Becoming a member is easy: complete the form on the next page and mail it back to us. You can also visit ccm.uc.edu and click on the CCMpower link to join. Not only will you be investing in CCM, but you’ll be fueling the arts engine for some of our city’s most beloved organizations.

“Sharr White has created two fine and ferociously damaged people caught in [an] emotional whirlpool.” – Huffington Post

Regional PRemieRe dRama. What if you had experienced the defining

moment of your life—but couldn’t remember it? Twenty years ago, Emma

walked out on her husband, cowboy-poet Ulysses, in the middle of the night.

Now, hearing he’s in dire straits, she tracks him down to the wilds of Colorado

in a grungy trailer. He’s working on his magnum opus, hooked to an oxygen

tank, and cooking breakfast in the buff. Their reunion, charged by rage and

compassion, is a story that rides the fine line between tragedy and comedy.
